Flicker was far from amused when the nasty little klepto apologized. For starters, it wasn't the nicest tone she could have used, and secondly, the words were not what one uses when saying sorry. A furious scowl etched itself across his fiery little face, embers pouring like a waterfall from his small mouth.
However, Spoink seemed to take matters into it's own hands. Both Trainer and Partner stood stock-still in shock as the pearl bounced off the Jigglypuff's head. Staring from it's fainted form, to the Spoink, Xerian let out a little laugh of delight.
Any other Trainer would likely have tried a capture of the beaten Jigglypuff. However, Xerian looked at it in disdain. "Move it somewhere, please, Flicker?" The little Magby made to grab the Jigglypuff by the foot, to drag it off into the bushes. Waddling back, he paused in front of the Spoink, upset at it's attempt to leave.
<Hey... Don't go. We make a good team!> He said, eyes sparkling enthusiastically. <Xerian might be new to this... but why don't you join us?>

The Spoink had only bounced a few steps away - pearl returned safely to it's usual spot atop his head - when Flicker spoke to him. He was rather surprised at the Fire Pokemon's words, considering he had been useless until he'd made the decision to chuck his precious pearl in the direction of the thieving puffball. But still, the words warmed him slightly. But was it worth it, going on a journey? It would no doubt be tough, and he'd never really went far from home before.
Then again, if the trainer and her Pokémon hadn't shown up, Spoink would never have had his pearl returned. And even if he'd found the thief on his own, he wouldn't have been able to do anything. But if he were to accompany this trainer, become part of their team... maybe she could raise him? He'd learn attacks, and actually be useful for once! The offer was too much to refuse, and he nodded once. Becoming stronger was a bit of an obsession with the bouncing Pokemon, and this could help him achieve that goal.
<Alright,> the Pokémon accepted. <I suppose you have to throw one of those red and white sphere things now? Pokeballs?> That was how he'd seen another trainer take a Zigzagoon that had been wandering leisurely down the path.

Spoink knew a moment of doubt as she pulled out one of the Pokeballs. Would it hurt? He'd never spoken to a tame Pokemon before, and wondered whether he should quickly ask the Magby before it was too late. But, just his luck, it already was too late, and he panicked slightly as the red and white orb sucked him into it's depths. The ball rocked violently as he reacted on instinct, and for a moment it looked as if the Pokeball might break open and free the paranoid Spoink from it's captivity.
But it hadn't hurt, and when he slowly realized this, Spoink calmed down and the rocking subsided. A few moments passed while the Pokeball settled, and then a soft ping signified that the capture had, indeed, been successful.

All around Xerian and her team, things were happening. The bubbling of a river or creek of some sort could be heard nearby, and the sounds of giggling and splashing were evident, as if some sort of Pokemon were at play.
To the left, and slightly up ahead, there was a grunt of exertion as a Meowth tumbled out of the bushes, holding something tight in it's paws. It glanced around wildly, spotted Xerian, and then promptly darted into the undergrowth, seeming panicked.
Up ahead, a Weedle was frantically approaching, as if panicked. However, the Pokemon could not move very fast, and so the effort wasn't exactly a successful one. After a moment, the poison-bug Pokemon gave up with a resigned gasp.
Investigate any of these areas, or move on?

It seemed that Route 1 was an exceptionally busy place today. Xerian was thankful for that. It meant she'd be able to come across many wonderful pokémon and either get to know them or capture them. Shoat rested happily in her arms, little spring bouncing slightly as they walked, eyes closed as his head swayed from side to side.
<So which way do you want to go?> Flicker asked. <I hear sounds in the water... there's a shifty looking cat over there or...> he pointed towards a frantic looking Weedle.
"What do you think, Shoat?" She knew that water pokémon would be no use against the Electric Gym; although she intended to try and capture at least one water type whilst she was on her way to the city - she'd come back if she had too. However, she was going to let Shoat make the decision.
<The Weedle looks distressed.> Shoat stated simply.
Xerian nodded. "Flicker, try and keep your embers under control. We don't want to frighten the poor thing away." Slowly she approached the Weedle, crouching down onto the earth and looking at it kindly.
"Hey. Are you okay? You seem to be in a bit of a hurry."

<Awww.> The Weedle muttered resignedly, slumping down to the ground in his defeat. He heard footsteps walk near him, but he didn't pay any mind to them. He felt so weak and tired, that any effort made to running away seemed out of the question. What he didn't expect was that it was a Pokemon trainer, out with a Magby and a Spoink. Normally he didn't like fire types, but it didn't seem to be a problem.
<I was participating in a marathon race with my friends, all across the route...but I got lost, and I'm so exhausted, I have no energy to keep running.> He panted, still feeling the frantic adreneline rush from earlier. Where had this race began again? He remembered that it started at a place with a sign, or thereabouts.
He really wasn't all that sure though. It wasn't a fun situation to be in, especially if all of his friends didn't wait for him at the finish line.

Shoat was the one to step closer to the exhausted Weedle, patting it consolingly with it's stubby little paw in an attempt to make it feel better. Xerian scanned the Weedle with her pokédex before extending a hand to stroke the Weedle lightly on it's head, being careful of the spike protruding from the top.
Xerian knew what it was like to be lost. After all, she was a rookie Trainer and this whole catching-pokémon-and-raising-them thing was all new to her, despite being brought up around pokémon.
<I'm going to see if I can find something for the Weedle to eat. There should be some Orans around here somewhere.> Flicker said, concerned about the tired-out bug and wanting to do something about it.
"Shoat, can you take this and see if you can find some water anywhere? Food and drink should help Weedle get his energy back," Xerian said, holding out a small water cup that Shoat took and bounded off, sniffing at the air. Flicker followed after him, rooting around amongst the bushes for anything that resembled an Oran Berry for the Weedle.
"Don't worry. We'll get you perked back up. And then we'll help you re-find your way, if you like," Xerian said to the Weedle with a soft smile.
She was a Trainer... sure, but Xerian would one day make the exchange to Breeder. Breeder's took care of sick or injured wild pokémon that they came across, did they not? This was her first chance to see if she had what it took.

The Weedle appreciated the kindness of the trainer and the Spoink, at first flinching at the warmth of their touch, but then simply allowing them to pet him. It was a bit of a stress relief, actually. With a disappointed sigh, the Weedle struggled to get up onto his feet, but still felt that his body was too heavy to lift off of the ground. It was going to take crack to get him to go anywhere, and don't ask how he knew what that stuff was.
As Flicker and Shoat were out on the hunt for things to help the poor Weedle, there was some success in their endeavors. One of the bushes happened to have a bright blue Oran berry sticking out of the bush. Almost at the same time it came into the Magby's peripheral view, a wild Teddiursa snatched it at that moment, eying the Magby with a a threatening stance.
<It's mine, you can't have it. I totally found it first.> She growled, holding the berry proudly up in the air as if it was a trophy. It was fair to say that she didn't seem too keen on sharing the darn thing either.
Shoat happened to be bouncing closer to a water source, where even the sound of water draining through a creak could be heard. The scent of the stream became crisp and fresh, easily something that could be detected. Several Rattata were lounging around, taking a sip of water. They didn't seem to be that much of a threat, so it was alright to approach.

The poor Weedle was clearly exhausted from trying to keep up with his friends and she was his only company for the moment whilst her pokémon wandered off looking for water and food. "Don't move," Xerian said, shuffling a little closer to the bug so she could protect it if something or someone else came along.
She didn't know what else she could do until Flicker and Shoat returned and so she opened her mouth and allowed a simple, soothing melody to flow from it. It was a song her mother used to sing when trying to calm down Miltank. A pretty little song, Xerian had always loved it. All they could do, was wait.
________
Flicker stared at the bear with a calm expression. <I'm trying to find oran berries for a Weedle. He's so very exhausted and he needs some food if he's going to get his energy back.> he made no move forward. He didn't want to startle this bear into running away.
However, perhaps if the bear could see that he was looking to help another pokémon, it might come along with him to help Weedle. <If you want to keep that berry, do you know where I might come across others?>
_________
Shoat eyed the Rattata nervously as he edged towards the water. If they attacked, he would have no way of defending himself other to run back to Flicker or Xerian. No! He would be brave. He would do as Xerian had asked of him. That Weedle needed this water.
Bouncing forward, he awkwardly dipped the cup into the water, filling it. Turning away from it, he watched the Rattata out of the corner of his eye as he sprang carefully and slowly forwards, trying hard not to spill too much of the water inside.

The Teddiursa was not easily swayed. Still clinging to her precious Oran Berry as if it was the most valuable possession in the world, she gazed distrustfully at the Magby. She had the immediate desire to rush off with her berry before the other Pokémon could steal it, but it seemed that the Magby had no intentions of attacking. Still, she barely lowered her guard, instead just taking a few steps back into the bushes, rather than running away immediately.
<It's my berry,> she repeated, not really caring about the Weedle's exhaustion. <He can get his own berry. This one is mine. Mine, you hear me? Mine!> The normally adorable teddy Pokémon was doing her best to look ferocious, but the anger was more adorable than frightening. <You want to steal my berries,> she half-whispered, when Flicker asked her if she knew where any others were. <You can't have them!> They were all thieves, all of them!
Before she could rush off, another Pokémon - the same Meowth from earlier - emerged from nearby, lugging a pinkish object with him. On closer inspection, it was revealed to be a Pokedoll. He let out a gasp of surprise upon seeing Flicker, fumbling with his grip on the object until he was once again clutching it tightly. He wasn't going to relinquish this precious bundle. <The Oran berries are over there!> he said quickly, pointing to a spot about ten feet away, on or thereabouts. <Just don't follow me!> Of course, the doll hadn't been his in the first place, but they didn't need to know that.
Before Flicker could form a reply, he had dashed back into the bushes.
Meowth is leaving? Interfere?
Meanwhile, over by the river, two of the Rattata had spotted the Spoink while it gathered the water. However, they paid him very little attention, merely keeping their beady gaze on him as he hopped nervously away.

Shoat continued to eye the Rattata warily as he made slow progress with the water cup. It wasn't for a few moments that he had a sudden idea. Placing the cup on the ground, he slipped the pearl from his head and tested it by placing it on top of the cup. It fit quite snugly, acting as a stopper to prevent the water from escaping.
Gleefully, he returned the pearl; with water cup, to his head and continued on, able to move a lot faster now he didn't have to worry about water escaping. After all, he was perfectly able to balance things on his head on bounce!
_________
Flicker tilted his head curiously. Either the Teddiursa was extremely hungry, or exceptionally greedy. The Meowth, on the other hand, seemed to be just a little too shifty for the little fire pokémon's liking.
Flicker could either take the berries the Meowth had pointed out or go after the Meowth.
He did neither.
<You may not care about the Weedle... but my Trainer does. She has a kind heart and can't overlook a pokémon who needs help. We helped a Spoink earlier and he is now a part of our team. All I ask is for one berry. Enough to enable the Weedle to regain strength so that he may return to his friends.>
He had a feeling his pleading wouldn't amount to anything; after all, the Teddiursa had seemed dead set against not letting him get any berries to help Weedle.
<He's lonely without his friends. We all know how that feels... to feel... cold and hungry and exhausted. I'm no longer lonely. I have Xerian. And soon we'll have many more friends!>
He had an idea.
<I propose a challenge. Come back with me and we'll have a battle. If you win, we'll do whatever you ask us to do. If we win, you help us help Weedle. What do you say?>

As the Spoink fixed the cup of water so that it was balanced, along with the pearl, on his head, the female Rattata whispered something into her companions ear, with a cheeky grin. Her partner seemed to think about something for a moment, then nodded and mirrored the grin. Together, the two Pokémon moved stealthily into the undergrowth, so that they were out of sight. Then, as the Spoink began the laborious journey back to it's trainer, the two rat Pokémon followed like fanged purple shadows.
Spoink is being stalked by Rattata (x2).
Teddiursa glared, still with a massive amount of distrust, at Flicker. The words about lonliness versus companionship meant absolutely nothing to the teddy Pokemon, so she didn't bat an eyelash as the Magby rambled on about it. Xerian, whoever that was, seemed to be some sort of companion to the other Pokémon. <It'll be a trap!> she insisted. <I know it will!> And she wasn't going to have that.
But still, the other Pokémon didn't seem to want to leave her alone. <All I want,> she said, still clutching her berry tightly to her, <is to keep my Berry. You won't let me keep my Berry.> It seemed really unfair. <If you win, you're not taking my Berry. This is mine.> The Meowth had already told the stupid Pokémon where the other berries were! Why didn't they just leave her alone?!

Flicker sighed. Clearly this Teddiursa wasn't going to help no matter what the offer. There was nothing else for it. He wandered to the patch of bush where the Meowth had told him there were others berries, plucked one from their midst and walked by the bear.
He gave her a steady look. <We'll be over there for a while, tending to the Weedle if you still want that battle.>
With that; and feeling a little guilty at taking one of the berries for the Weedle, Flicker ran back towards where he had left Xerian.

Spoink bounded along feeling as though he was being watched. He tried to shrug it off. After all, the rattata had made no move at the pool so they couldn't be following him. And he hadn't seen any sign of anything else here.
Spotting Xerian's back, he bounded faster, almost leaping into her lap, quivering.
Taking the cup from his head, Shoat plucked his pearl from it and replaced it atop his head, handing the water to his Trainer.
Xerian patted Shoat, resulting in a staccato of short, rapid springs from the pokémon. He had done well!
"Here, Weedle. Drink some of this." She scooped some of the water into her palm and held it before the little bug. Shouldn't be too long before Flicker returned.

The little Weedle gave a grateful sigh as the Spoink returned from it's small journey with water. Though exhausted, he had not really realized how thirsty he was until the water touched his parched lips. The small bug Pokemon drank until there was nothing left, then relaxed with a relieved sigh. <Thank you!> he said gratefully, speaking to both Xerian and her Pokemon. The other one, the Fire one, had not yet returned, but he was thankful all the same. He hoped that Flicker was okay, considering the trainer had been really nice to him, and he didn't want any harm to come to her or her companions.
::weedle::
Meanwhile, Shoat had not made it back as safely as everyone had assumed. The two Rattata crouched in the bushes, surveying it with greedy, bead-like eyes. They chittered quietly amongst each other, seemingly forming some sort of a plan. The female made a sharp noise of excitement, but it was muffled by the thickness of the undergrowth in which they'd concealed themselves.
Then, without warning, one of them burst from the bushes and faced Shoat and his trainer with a hostile glare. The male, obviously the lesser authority of the two, had sprang forward on a signal from his companion, who remained lurking in the brush. Facing Shoat, he gave a vicious hiss of challenge. Exactly what he was furious about was unclear, as he did not speak to the Spoink, but merely readied himself for a fight.

"You're welcome." Xerian looked about for Flicker and not seeing him anywhere, felt a small knot form in her stomach. Just what was keeping him?
Shoat squealed in surprise as the Rattata sprang before him, hissing it's challenge. What could he do? He didn't know how to fight. He wasn't going to be able to do anything!
He flopped about. About the only thing he knew how to do. Whilst it served no real purpose, he was hoping to keep the Rattata focused on himself.
<Protect Weedle!> He said as he continued to flail uselessly on the ground.
Xerian aimed to pick the bug pokémon up, to hold him against her chest so that the Rattata have to come directly for her if they wanted to attack him. She stared at Shoat, knowing full well he knew no attacks to actually deal damage to this rat, which she found out was rattata as she scanned it quickly with the PokéDex.
"Where's Flicker...?"
If he didn't get back soon, Shoat was going to get beaten badly. Not what she wanted to happen in his first battle.

The Rattata was utterly nonplussed as the Shoat started to flail uselessly in front of it. It's whiskers twitched in confusion, wondering if the attack was supposed to hurt. Whatever it was supposed to be doing, it didn't seem to have any effect on the yellow-fanged rat Pokemon, and so the purple-coated creature quickly recovered, realizing that he was in no real danger. This Spoink would be easy prey for the Rattata and it's mate. Now, of course, she hardly ever engaged in fighting herself, just ordered him to do it. She was tough, she just didn't like messing up her 'good looks'.
Now, back to the fighting. The Rattata, knowing that it had time to spare thanks to the uselessness of his opponents attacks, took a deep breath and focused his energy, trying to increase his chances of landing a critical hit. After a long moment of concentration, the rat Pokemon let out a ferocious shriek and bounded toward Shoat, aiming to land a Quick Attack on the enemy Spoink.
::rattata:: Rattata used Focus Energy and Tackle on Shoat!
From the bushes, his mate watched with obvious pleasure gleaming in her beady little eyes. It seemed she'd chosen well, after all. She was the strategist of the pair, but it was rare for her to be goaded into fighting anything.

With a keening squeak, Shoat was hit backwards with such force that he didn't think he was ever going to stop. He heard Xerian's cry of his name but couldn't do anything to prevent the hard impact with the earth at the end of his little journey. Struggling to his 'foot', Shoat blinked blearily as he tried to focus on the nasty little purple rat that had hit him.
He couldn't do this! He wasn't strong enough for this. He hurt. He was aching. ... What was that?
<Shoat!>
An Oran Berry rolled to a stop at Xerian's feet and she looked up suddenly. Flicker wasn't there; but he had to be close by. Surely he'd hear her command?
"Flicker! Ember!"
From above came a rain of flaming hot embers. Flicker had arrived on the scene and leapt into the air to avoid immediate detection from the rodent fighting Shoat. His eyes were narrowed angrily as he hit the dirt, almost crouched on his landing. Flicker was furious.
<Pick on someone your own size, buddy!>
Xerian picked the Oran Berry from the ground and held it out in front of the Weedle. Shoat made it to her side, clinging to her leg as if for protection. "Take a rest, Shoat."
<Thank you.> Shoat responded as Xerian pressed his pokéball gently to his head. <I hope I didn't let you down.>
"You did well, my brave friend," Xerian reassured him as he was sucked into the capsules depths.

The Rattata squealed in sadistic delight as the Spoink was knocked backward, obviously unable to fight back. His mate would be proud of him, yes she would, and when he beat this thing into a pulp, they could go back to the river and brag to their friends about it. His whiskers quivered in anticipation of this moment as the little purple rodent Pokemon readied himself to attack again.
Before he could make his next move, however, searing hot embers seemed to come out of nowhere and singe his fur, burning him slightly. A pained shriek burst from his throat as he backed up slightly, eying the Spoink with newfound weariness. He had no idea it could do something like that! Spoink weren't even Fire Pokemon, were they?
He saw the real cause for his pain, however, when a Magby joined the fray. Drat, the stupid trainer had more than one Pokemon! They hadn't planned this at all! But he couldn't run, else his mate would be furious. Narrowing his eyes, the Rattata snarled and attempted to Tackle the Fire Pokemon despite his injuries. <You're on!>
