Nova felt downright disgusted at herself as she came to Route One. That Rookie Ranger probably thought she was a right soft touch, now. Eurgh. Why did she let herself be so nice? It was Stunky's fault.
Without really thinking about it, Nova grasped the single Pokéball at her belt, enlarged it and tossed it into the air. As it opened midair, the skunk pokémon appeared in the typical flash of light. Nova skillfully plucked the pokéball from the air as it descended, clicking it back at her waist. It was a trick her brother had taught her so many years ago.
Stunky stared up at her as though measuring the Trainer up.
"What are you looking at?" Nova asked, irritated by the look the pokémon was giving her.
Stunky seemed to approve of this response. <You'll do nicely.>
Nova looked over her partner, scanning it's divine purple form. At least the pokémon accepted her. However, she wasn't about to let this wonderful pokémon be the leader of HER. Oh no. She would make sure her partner was aware that SHE was incharge.
"Seems that we'll work out nicely, then. Though, I'm in charge."
<Naturally, Mistress.>
Nova approved of this. There was something particularly... powerful in the Stunky's personality. That kid Ranger really couldn't have picked a better partner for her. The Stunky sniffed at Nova's foot, familiarizing itself with her fragrance. It wasn't hard for Nova to do the same. After all, her partner stank. No doubt, in time she'd grow accustomed to that aroma.
"Now... let's give you a name..." she thought for a moment. "How about Miasma?" Nova had quickly gone through her vocabulary for a word that fitted both the toxic tendencies of her partner as well as it's noxious stench.
<Apt.> The pokémon approved, wafting it's tail about. <So, Mistress... Where to?>
Nova glanced about. "Well. In order to best the first gym of this region... it's training time."
Miasma seemed pleased by this chance to prove herself. She adopted an offensive stance. It was time to show her Trainer the power held in her small, toxic body.

"Tw-EEEEEEEET. tw-tw-tw-EEEEEEEt." A strange sound of a bird cried out in a hostile manner. Where it came from? Possibly farther south around 20 feet or thereabouts, but it was hard to be sure when it was coming much closer to Nova's location. It wouldn't stop, this annoying, patronizing crying. It was hard to tell what the bird's problem was until it actually flew into view, spying the Stunky from up in the air.
<Because of your smell, you scared all of my prey away!> She growled, though she was unaware of the Stunky's stench herself, she knew that they were known for being...well, stinky. Birds didn't have a sense of smell, thank goodness, so she was easily able to approach the Stunky with her lungs unharmed.
<For that, you will have to go away.> She seethed, already kicking up a Sand Attack in an attempt to force the Stunky to move away. She wasn't about to use any painful physical attacks yet. Not unless it put up a fight.

Miasma glared at the pidgey, completely unfazed by it's accusations. After all, what did it matter to her if the pidgey ate or not? It wasn't as if they would be hanging around so long the pidge would die of starvation. Turning her head briefly to look at Nova, the Stunky waited to be told what to do as the Sand Attack kicked up around her, forcing the skunk to shield her eyes in an attempt to prevent it from obscuring her vision too much.
Nova scanned the Pidgey with her PokéDex before giving Miasma her order.
"Oh please. Miasma, Focus Energy." her voice was calm, as though she didn't care about the damage the sand attack was causing to her pokémon's accuracy.
Miasma stood still, focusing her power at her core, allowing it to build until she felt like she was could dish out more damage. This Pidgey wouldn't know what hit it, darn blasted thing.
"Miasma. Scratch."
Miasma knew there was a chance the Scratch would fail due to the Sand Attack... but her Trainer had given an order and she would obey. Lashing out with a sharp claw, the skunk aimed for the defiant little pidgey. <I'm not a push over.> Stunky hissed at the Pidgey, making sure it was aware that even though it had gained the first attack and inflicted damage on her accuracy, Miasma was far from done.

The Pidgey flew around in circles right about the Stunky, not quite understanding why she was just standing there. It was quite annoying, actually. The human that was nearby had ordered her Pokemon to do something, but she didn't know what she had said. Some kind of focus thing? Yeah, she knew nothing about yoga. She felt offended though that the thing hardly reacted to her harsh warning.
She dropped to the ground, as if to reprimand the Stunky for its insolent manners, but instead got a face full of Scratch. Crying out in response, she instantly became furious at the thing for being so cruel.
Fine then, if they wanted a fight, she'd give them a fight. Flapping her wings rapidly in response to the blow, she turned around to gain some altitude and speed in the air. The facing the Stunky once more, she charged forward for a Tackle attack.

The brief respite as the Pidgey readied for her Tackle served as a pause for Miasma to rub the sand out of her eyes. There was no way she'd be able to get rid of it all, but at least she could see somewhat.
"Hold."
What did that mean? Hold what, Miasma thought. Did her trainer expect her to grab onto something? Exactly what Nova had meant became apparent as the stunky stood there trying to figure out the meaning. The Pidgey connected with her head, pushing the skunk back several feet, forcing it to dig it's claws into the ground to skid to a halt.
"Pursuit."
Miasma charged forwards, claws ripping up dirt as she moved, muscles bunching beneath her fur. It felt just wonderful to be under the command of a trainer who wasn't afraid to push her. She knew Nova would train her hard. It would be a difficult journey, but she would be the strongest of her kind at the end of it!

The fact that this Pokemon was a trainers, and the fact that there were none of the sort around this area, meant that the poor bird Pokemon wasn't aware of what attacks and strategies she would be up against. Therefore, the word 'Pursuit' brought nothing but confusion as she wondered how to dodge it. But it was already too late.
Pidgey let out a pained squawk as the Dark move came in contact with her chest, sending her backward slightly. Why hadn't that smelly creature just heeded her warning and left? It would have made things a lot more simple. Still, she was riled up and angry now, due to the scratches the thing had made in her face, and she wasn't about to give up and back down.
Since she had decided to stay and fight, it would be useful if she could make it harder for the skunk Pokemon to hit her. She used a combination of wings and talons to kick up a cloud of dust, aiming it toward the eyes of her opponent. After this was done, she spun around and launched herself for a fierce Tackle attack.

Miasma growled in irritation as dirt and grit sprayed her in the face; coating her from nose to tail tip. The force of the ensuring tackle was enough to send her flying backwards, rolling across the ground in a heap.
"Get up."
Most pokémon would have quailed under such heartless instruction. Most trainers would have checked their pokémon was okay. But neither Miasma nor Nova were like others. They strived on being strong.
Miasma pushed back onto her feet, shaking her coat to at least get rid of the extra weight. Nova knew that if the Pidgey kept this up, this battle could turn out far trickier than it really needed to be. She sighed.
"Poison Gas."
Now that was what Miasma was waiting for. Whilst she had claws to attack with, she was a noxious pokémon and she loved used poison attacks. The Pidgey couldn't smell... but it had a beak where it breathed. Turning around and lifting her tail, Miasma let out a poisonous gas that mingled with the air around them.
Nova allowed the corners of her mouth to quirk. She was not going to lose to a pidgey.

The Pidgey was surprised by the trainers cold treatment of her Pokemon. Pidgey had only fought a few Pokemon owned by trainers before (a lot of trainers came down this route, of course) and usually when their Pokemon was knocked backward like that, the trainer exhibited concern. But Seraphyna merely coldly ordered the poisonous Pokemon to it's feet. The Stunky obeyed, not seeming shocked by her trainers attitude at all. They were certainly an odd pair.
She was so surprised by this that she forgot to look out for the noxious cloud of poison gas, and it hit her full on. Coughing and spluttering - which, if you're a bird, sounds like a bunch of strangled squawks - the Pidgey felt the poison start to sap her strength. Oh, no! She'd been poisoned. And unfortunately, while some wild Pokemon kept a Berry on hand for incidents like this one, she had not prepared in advance. Though she could feel herself weakening, she kicked up more sand, then tried for another Tackle.

This pidgey was starting to piss Nova off. As the Sand Attack once more kicked up around her partner, she paused only briefly before giving her next command.
"Miasma. To the left."
Miasma leapt from her position, narrowly avoiding another tackle from the irritating pidgey, hit the dirt and readied herself for her Trainer's next command. Her eyes felt gritty from the three sand-attacks and Miasma was well aware that if she didn't finish this battle very soon, chances were, she wouldn't be landing any further attacks and poison would have to do her job for her.
"Scratch."
Miasma leapt at the Pidgey, claws glinting in the sunlight as she closed the gap between them. She had to win. She had to get stronger. She had to show her Trainer that they were a perfect duo.
Nova observed her pokémon with a blank expression. What she thought of her Stunky's battle capabilities was anyone's guess.

The Pidgey cursed internally when she felt herself connect with the ground, rather than the Stunky. Apparently, the trainer was useful for more than just telling it what moves to use, for she'd directed the skunk Pokemon on how to dodge her attacks, as well. There was already too much dust in the air, already, and so she didn't risk another Sand Attack, fearful that she'd lower her own accuracy instead of the other Pokemon's. Also, thanks to the low visibility from the recent Sand Attack, it took her a moment to figure out where the skunk Pokemon was coming from.
Only just managing to dodge in time, the turn wasn't completely without it's damage. She could feel the poison slowly but surely sapping her strength. Unless she managed to knock this other Pokemon unconscious, the likelihood that she would win was almost zero. Still, she'd never given up on a fight before.
Angling herself carefully, the wild Pidgey lunged for her opponents flank with a challenging squawk.

The retaliatory tackle came about too quick for Nova to order another dodge and so she watched as the bird collided with her partner. Miasma managed to stay upright, though she was forced back across the dirt again, body aching from the contact point of the tackle. Taking a deep breath, determined not to show any weakness in front of Pidgey, let alone Nova, Miasma prepared herself.
"Scratch."
It was repetitive; but then, early training tended to be. Nova had learnt that much from her travels through other regions before coming to Cheyenne.
Miasma darted towards the Pidgey, a shade slower than before due to the throbbing ache in her side. As her paw flicked out, claws extended, Miasma found herself hoping the battle would be over soon. She was going to need more than just commands from her trainer otherwise.

The Pidgey was feeling triumphant when she managed to land a hit on the noxious Pokémon. I mean, it was pretty hard for Miasma to dodge due to her injuries, but it still felt good to be back in control. This cockiness, however, was her fatal flaw. She had regained her confidence, and so had not been looking out for the skunk Pokemon's retaliations. Before she knew what was coming, the Stunky's claws were already ripping into her chest. With a screech of pain, the Pidgey fell back, gasping and panting for breath.
Then, it was up to the poison to do the rest. When the stubbornly determined bird Pokémon tried to force herself upward for another attack, she felt her reaction time was slowed, and her wings felt heavy and leaden. With a slight groan of pain, consciousness left the poor bird Pokemon, and she slumped into unconsciousness in the mess of dust she'd created.
Pidgey has fainted. Attempt capture, or move on? Miasma gains 1 level!

As the Pidgey fainted, Miasma let out a relieved sigh. It would have been foolish of her to say that the battle against the pidgey hadn't left her feeling a little sore. However, she shook her fur, relieving herself further of the dirt and grit the Pidgey had created and tried to look as though she wasn't that injured.
Nova saw right through it. Without a sound, she pulled a potion from her bag, walked over to her pokémon and sprayed it over the skunk's body. Miasma felt the weariness leave her. Whilst Nova was somewhat of a harsh trainer, she knew that she needed her pokémon in the best shape; and that meant taking care of them. Miasma nuzzled at Nova's hand, half-expecting a reprimand for doing so.

She was rather taken aback when Nova gave her a small smile and stroked her head. "You did well. I'm proud to have you as my partner."
<It was nothing. What about her?> she indicated the passed out Pidgey.
"What do you think? She won't be much help against the first gym."
<Perhaps not. But she was strong for my first proper battle. Capture the bird if you wish. She's strong enough.>
Nova agreed with her pokémon. So, she extracted a ball from her belt, pressed the button to enlarge it and tossed it towards the Pidgey.

A shred of consciousness gripped the bird Pokemon as the ball enclosed it. No! She didn't want to go with this trainer and her skunk Pokemon! They seemed like a cruel pair. All the Pidgey had wanted was for them to leave, so that the prey wouldn't be scared off. However, she didn't really have a choice. Though the ball gave a few violent rocking motions as the Pidgey valiantly attempted her escape, the exhaustion had really been too much for her, and she eventually gave up, hearing the slight ping that signified that she was now bound to a new life.

Nova retrieved the pokéball that now held the somewhat irritating Pidgey. She thought about letting it out, but it was most likely exhausted. She might be heartless, but even Nova knew when to stop pushing a pokémon. She would let the bird rest up. "Your name is Ayra." Shrinking the capsule, Nova clipped it at her belt, next to Miasma's pokéball before turning to the skunk.
"How are you feeling?"
<Better. Thank you.>
"Don't mention it. Which way?" Nova was the one in control... but Miasma was the one with the keener sense of smell. After all, Pokémon were sharper than humans in nearly all respects. Miasma looked around before indicating forwards with her tail.
<That way. We still need to find at least one more member for the team that will be of use at the city.>
"You're right. Though I don't doubt your strength, we'll need a back-up."
<Exactly.>
"Let's go."
Nova started forwards, Miasma at her side. They would find the strongest pokémon on the route and she would add them to the party. And with those pokémon, she would go on and crush the city's gym leader. This thought brought an amused smirk to her lips.

The route's path appeared completely empty, albeit it had quite the scenic view. The sky was clear, with very few puffy white clouds in the shape of an Ekans slithering across its surface. Some of the Wild Pokémon happily chirped in the background, but their appearances were completely sheltered from the thick foliage. It appeared as if it would be difficult to wait for a wild Pokémon to actually approach Nova and her Stunky, especially with that Stench ability in use.
Up ahead, there was a fork in the road. The chipped wooden sign on it had some faded out words in black ink, and something small scribbled on the side. The first of the two arrows on the sign pointed to the shortest way to Electric City, while the other pointed to a more scenic route. Scribbled at the bottom? Gary Oak Was Here First

"Any chance you can turn that off?" Nova asked, peering down at Miasma as they walked along the route.
<No. It's all natural, sorry.> The Stunky glanced back at her Trainer. <Though I guess you could shove something up my rear to block it... but that wouldn't be very pleasant.>
"For either of us." Nova agreed as she halted in front of a sign that gave directions. Her eyes skimmed it briefly before zoning in on the scribble at the bottom. 'Gary Oak was here first.'
"How obnoxious," she retorted, flicking dark damson hair over her shoulder. "If I ever find the punk who decided to declare his travels across the sign posts, I'll wring his neck..." she mused, looking in the direction that wasn't towards the City.
"I don't feel like going to the City yet. Miasma, sorry, but you're going back in your ball until I need you. Use that time to rest up incase I need you to battle."
<As you wish, Mistress.>
As she returned the skunk to it's ball and placed her at her belt, Nova strode off down the scenic route. Maybe she'd have more luck finding pokémon now Miasma was safely in her ball where she could no longer ward them off with her toxic stink.

Once that toxic smell spread out enough into the fresh air, it became difficult to even notice the smell at all. As the air quality became as fresh as cow manure, more Pokemon began to expose themselves. Thinking the stink spell had passed for good, a small pink figure emerged from the bushes while clutching a Pokeball in it's hands. It didn't have a particular reason to be holding the item, it was actually something it had just picked up.
<Oh my...I still smell it.> She commented, feeling quite sick enough as it is after eating that rotten Oran berry. She covered her nose with a dainty pink paw as Nova came into view. Perhaps the Stunky's scent had attached itself to her clothes, but it wasn't as bad as it used to be, that was for sure.

A dark purple eyebrow rose in an inquisitive fashion as the Clefairy appeared, pokéball in hand. The little pink fairy-like pokémon might have been cute to just about any other trainer... but it wasn't purple. And it didn't seem to be that strong. Both of these things would normally have caused Nova's interest to wan immediately.
She resisted her initial temptation to kick the almost round-shaped pokémon, flicked open her pokédex and half listened to the entry on the moon-loving freak. Slipping her pokédex away, she made a decision. It wasn't what she would usually go for, but she needed more than Miasma for the upcoming Gym Challenge.
Clipping a pokéball from her belt, she tossed it into the air. It opened, the extremely weak Pidgey within emerging, flapping it's wings barely enough to keep it airbourne. Taking a potion from her bag, Nova sprayed it over her bird pokémon and waited until she started showing signs of strengthening before talking to her.
"Ayra. What do you think?"
The Pidgey looked at the Clefairy. <It's cute.>
Nova's eyes rolled. Typical. Ayra flew to the ground and hovered before the Clefairy. <What are you doing out here, Clefairy?>

Clefairy raised a dainty hand to her mouth. <Well, now that you ask, I haven't the faintest idea.> She explained. Then, turning to face the pokeball in her other hand, she seemed to light up. <However, this seed right here looks like it will grow delicious berries.> Said the little alien, holding up the sphere in her hand. <I think I shall go and plant it whilst the sun is still beating warmly down.> The little fairy pokemon said, nodding curtly and walking over to where it saw some nice-looking soil she could bury the 'seed' in.
