Holding back a giggle, Kenna moved her hand forward and rested it on the Meowth’s broad head. Stroking the soft fur, she was pleased to note that this really was a healthy specimen. Should she choose to bite, Kenna was certain that the Pokemon would prove to be strong, as well. Strong and cute. Unlike her stupid Turtwig. She sighed.
Not wanting to overextend her offer of just a short pet, Kenna withdrew her hand before the Meowth decided enough was enough. She had noticed the feline’s interest in her own tail, and looked around at the base of the rock for -- ah, there. A feather. She knelt down and picked it up, twirling it in her fingertips. Grinning at the Meowth, she began trailing the prey-like object along the boulder’s surface in front of the Pokemon, wriggling it tantalizingly. Wild Pokemon or not, she must have the urge to pounce and play. The desire to instantly get to town was momentarily absent from Kenna’s one-track mind.

Meowth purred as the Trainer's hand ran over her body. Oooh, she knew why tame cats enjoyed the touch of their owners so much now. It was exhilarating. Aww, the touch had ended so soon. She knew she had set the boundaries that had made this happen, but all the same... Oh well, it would probably be best to carry on... A feather. A usually prone object, trailed along the ground by the light touch of the Trainer. With paws outstretched in a playful position as natural instinct took over, she pounced at the feather, sheathing her claws so as not to damage the new plaything or the Trainer's hand. ::meowth::

Giggling audibly, now, Kenna dangled the feather tantalizingly in front of the Meowth, then zipped it back so that it appeared to be bouncing along of its own accord at the edge of the boulder. The game was just as much fun for her as it was the cat she was entertaining; her smile was wide, genuine, on her childish face. Naturally, she allowed the feather to be caught by the Meowth a few times before having it ‘dart’ away again across the rock. She was happy that the feline had sheathed her claws; the paws batting against her hand were strong for their size.
Finally, after allowing the Meowth to keep hold of the feather, she sighed. ”I should probably get going,” Kenna said, offering her hand for another scratch behind the ears. Though she would like to stay and play with the kitty some more, duty called. The call of the fuzzy Meowth, however, was strong enough to make her doubt the urgency of getting to her destination. ”Maybe… you could come with me?” she offered, her wide blue eyes hopeful. Even if the Pokemon didn’t want to be caught, it would be nice to have a fluffy buddy… a real partner, for part of her first route. Unlike Turtwig. It all lead back to how much she disliked Turtwig.

- The Meowth appeared thoughtful of the girl's question, and when she hinted that she wanted to leave, the feline even felt a sense of longing. To go with her, perhaps? The thought was like a sweet taste on her tongue, and she kept debating it over and over, tasting it until she was satisfied. Perhaps going along with this friendly human was not such a bad idea.
- She got up on her hind legs, something that had taken a lot of practice to do, and rubbed her chin thoughtfully. She was only teasing the human, pretending to debate it longer than necessary before she clapped her paws together. With a decisive face, she grinned at the girl. What was it that humans did? Thumbs up? Well, she gave that a shot to see if the girl understood.
- <You better not starve me. And I would adore to see what a 'hot bath' is like.> She added with a wink, having heard some interesting things from the city Pokemon that wandered into the forest. Sometimes she had nice conversations with them, sometimes they were hostile. They were...ya know, different.

Watching the Pokemon eagerly, Kenna couldn’t help but be impressed at this particular Meowth’s ability to stand on two legs. And then to show such a human expression! It was all too much. She wiggled back and forth, shifting her weight from left to right, several times before she was given her answer. Thumbs up. It was all too much. Smiling happily, the girl couldn’t help but give the Meowth another stroke on the head, giving it a thumbs up of her own.
“It’ll be awesome, don’t worry,” she told the Pokemon, feeling that conditions were being given. With time, she would grow to understand her partner; it had happened before, with the Pokemon given to her by the Rockets, and she hadn’t even been particularly close to them. With this Meowth it shouldn’t take long at all.
Reaching into her bag -- the rough one given to her by the Rangers, she pulled out a Pokeball. It was sparking. Her smile faltered, but remained in place. The second orb was similarly acting up. “Strange,” she murmured. “There’s something funny with these Pokeballs, but they should be okay,” Kenna told the Meowth. She tapped the critter on the forehead and waited.

Sucked into the Pokeball, a sensation of stinging static pain immediately hit her. SWEET ARCEUS' TOILET IT HURT! Giving in to her natural urges to escape pain, she thrashed with all her might against her painful prison. The ball rocked violently before opening up again, releasing the Meowth in a dazzling flash of white light. Her beautifully wiry beige fur stood up, spiky and uncomfortable. >What was that?!< she demanded furiously, before trying to lick her fur back into a smooth neatness. ::meowth:: Capture failed. Pokeball still usable.

”I--I don’t know!” Kenna responded, looking at the Pokeball resting on the boulder. She picked it up. It shocked her hand, harder this time; she dropped it with a squeak. Carefully picking it up, she tossed it in her bag, then dug through and selected another Pokeball. It, too, was sparking when enlarged. Oh, what if the Meowth abandoned her because of that? After getting her hopes up? Kenna bit her lip and shoved the spheres back in her bag.
She looked at the Meowth, holding her hand out again for the Meowth to rub against should she still trust her. ”I didn’t mean for that to happen, honest. I bet better Pokeballs will be working right. Do you want to go with me, still?”

The Meowth glared uncertainly at Kenna's hand. She really wasn't sure whether or not she wanted to go with this trainer, if she was going to play dirty tricks on her like that. Still, the ideas of hot baths and a companionship was ever so tempting. Hesitantly, she rubbed her head against the hand of the trainer, receiving no more shocks or ill-willed fates.
The cat Pokemon pulled back and tilted her head slightly, thinking about it. Yes, she did want to go with the trainer, but those shocks had hurt. <I guess so...> she said indecisively, <but do you have any of those better balls with you...?> She didn't want to be shocked like that again, but going with the trainer had been a decision. She had to stick to it now, right?

Relief flooded through the girl as the Meowth accepted her hand, rubbing against it. Its fur was still soft, but Kenna could feel that it was still muffled up from the shock it had received in the Pokeball. What was going on? The static in the air must be messing with everything; Kenna thought back to her malfunctioning Pokedex. Something was up… would even an Ultraball work right now?
She glanced at the Meowth, who had said something and was looking at her bag. Kenna shook her head, guessing its inquiries. ”I don’t have any with me, no. I was just heading into town. They’ll have lots! And I won’t leave you there, don’t worry.” Kenna held out her arms for the Meowth to crawl up onto; she couldn’t be inside the Pokeball, but maybe she’d be okay being held? And if not, being followed by a bouncing Meowth was equally acceptable.

The Meowth was rather surprised when the trainer didn't just pull out another Pokeball and try again. She had been expecting a gesture such as this, and though she didn't quite approve, she wouldn't have resisted. After all, the temptation of the things a trained-Pokemon's life offered were a little too much to turn down. But no, instead the kind trainer offered to take her to town and get some better Pokeballs, one's that likely wouldn't malfunction. Hmm. This was certainly a good quality.
<Maybe you're not so bad, after all,> the Meowth decided aloud, purring. It felt nice to feel her fingers pulling through the beige fur of the creature, and she was glad she wouldn't have to be electrocuted to keep Kenna around. This was always a positive thing.
Noticing that Kenna had offered a perch in her arms, the beige-furred femme accepted the place with an approving meow, rubbing her flank across Kenna's shoulder before settling down. Mmm. This really was quite comfortable. <So how far is this town, anyways?> She was a little impatient in making it official, because she wanted to make sure that the trainer really wouldn't just leave. It all seemed too good to be true.

With the Meowth snuggled up in her arms, Kenna was just about ready to find a nice place to die happily. She gave it a slight squeeze, then straightened up. Kenna was a small girl, but she found that the Meowth was still the perfect size for her; it wasn’t large enough to hinder movement, nor slow her down. Perfect. She was just as thrilled as her new buddy.
Kenna hadn’t the foggiest idea how far away town was; she’d been guided in this direction by a bee, after all, who had simply shown her the particular way in which to travel. Anything more than this, Kenna had no idea. In response to her mews and curious glancing down the path, Kenna shrugged. ”I don’t know, I haven’t been there before. But it shouldn’t be too long.” The trees that were scattered across the route, and the hills, made looking too far into the distance a bit of a bother; Kenna’s height did not help things, either. Even the taller grasses towered over her head.
Apparently her height had a benefit. An individual whose eyes were higher up may not have noticed the glint of the Greatball lying forgotten along the side of the path, mostly covered by a pile of autumn leaves. Kenna stopped, seeing the shiny object -- almost Meowth-like, herself -- and brushed the leaves aside with her foot. A Greatball? Really? Just lying here? Someone must have dropped it when they were passing through…
Shifting the Meowth so she could freely move one arm, Kenna picked up the object, enlarged it, and opened it. Empty. What luck! She smiled at the Meowth. ”Looks like someone lost their Greatball. Lucky for us, huh?” Happily, she tapped the Meowth on the forehead with the sphere.
ooc|| I prefer finding/obtaining objects from promos and such naturally as opposed to them just appearing. Kenna was going to "steal" this from the PokeMart, but I want this darn Meowth. XD [/size]

Mmm. The Meowth was quite comfortable within the girls arms, and she could have just fallen asleep right there and then. But the cat wanted to make sure that she was not just deposited on the side of the road and left there, she was still wondering if this was too good to be true after all, and so she was going to stay awake and ensure that her place within Kenna's team would be eventually confirmed. Plus, the view from up her was pretty nice. Her soon-to-be trainer was kinda short and all, but the Meowth was even shorter when she was standing on her own, and so this was still an improvement. She gave a contented purr as Kenna walked along.
<Ah, well,> she conceded with a shrug. <It's not like I have anything else to do.> Just so long as Kenna held up on her end of the bargain, she was perfectly happy with this taking a little longer.
She noticed the glint of the ball perhaps even before Kenna herself, and her eyes fixed on the shiny glint hungrily. Oh, how she loved shiny things. Still, she wasn't in favor of abandoning her current position. Kenna seemed interested in whatever it was, however, and this peaked the Meowth's interest enough. Oh, and it was a better Pokeball! How perfect.
Rather unprepared for the ball sucking her inside, she gave a mewl of surprise, but settled down quite quickly. Though the Great Ball had a slight feeling of static, it wasn't near as bad as the Pokeball had been, and her lack of resistance ended the capture quite quickly. The ball gave a reassuring ping to let Kenna know about her new Pokemon, and that was that.

Holding the sphere in her hand, Kenna smiled. Her first Pokemon. Turtwig didn’t count. She did glance down at the shrunken ball shoved in her pocket, though, as she thought of him. Maybe she’d give him a chance. Later. But for now, it was time to bring back out her new partner. Her arms had gotten slightly tired after carrying the feline around for a while, but it was worth it for the happiness it provided both of them.
Only one spark emitted from the blue-and-white sphere as she released the Meowth, who stretched and flexed her claws as she appeared. The cat’s eyes were wide, surprised. She had just gotten in there -- and it wasn’t too bad, she had to admit -- and her trainer was already letting her out? This better not be her abandoning her. Like the other trainer from before. Kenna, however, held out her arms for the Meowth to jump back up. Really? This wasn’t another betrayal? Eagerly, she jumped up and snuggled up to her new friend.
”I’m Kenna, by the way. Do you have a name?”
The Meowth shook her head, looking up at her. <My old ‘trainer’ gave me a name, but I refuse to be known by that. Not since he dropped me in the gutter.>
Kenna sensed a bit of bitterness in the way her Pokemon stiffened slightly in her arms. She stroked the Meowth’s head to calm her down. ”How about Rio?” The name meant nothing in particular. Just a cute little name that came to mind.
Tilting her head, the Meowth rolled over onto her back and looked up at Kenna. She pondered for a moment, then closed her eyes contentedly. <Rio. I like it.> A low rumbling began in her chest as she began to purr.
Smiling happily, Kenna headed down the path towards town. She wasn’t in quite so much of a hurry, now. Not anymore. For the first time in her life, Kenna was pleased with her Pokemon.

Sentret hated cats. Absolutely hated them. He'd had a family once. A nice mate, three kids. One of the kids had been just about ready to leave the nest, and the other two were close behind. He'd been looking forward to the idea of grandkids running around the route, filling the air with the sounds of their laughter as the ran around chasing their tails and being the young innocents that they were. Until that damn Glameow had came around and ruined everything. He'd been a powerful male with broad muscles, his eyes gleaming hungrily as he snatched first Sentret's mate, then all the others as Sentret cowered in fear.
And here he was, the sole survivor. The Glameow had taken one look at him, huffed, then left. Humph! How dare he gobble up Sentret's entire family, then simply leave on such an irritating note? Was Sentret not desirable enough? At any rate, these events in his recent past had brought about a loathing for cats that nothing could challenge.
So when he saw Kenna traveling with the Meowth in her arms, he let out a very angry snarl. <What are you doing with that... that... thing, miss?>

Startled, Kenna looked over at the side of the path and looked at the source of the growl she had heard. Rio looked, too, though she had actually understood the words. The fur on the ruff of her neck stood upright as she examined the rodent disdainfully. What had she done to get such treatment? Nothing. And in Kenna’s book, the creature was no better. Sentret was a fairly cute Pokemon, but the way this particular one was acting was simply disgusting. His hatred-filled eyes were on her Meowth. Nothing should look at her that way.
”Do you have a problem with Rio?” Kenna asked the small creature, almost all signs of the sweet innocent girl gone. The Meowth in question noticed this change, but hardly cared. It was for her sake, after all. The Meowth jumped down from her trainer’s arms and stood beside her, watching the Sentret through narrowed eyes.

The Sentret gave a high-pitched laugh at Kenna's question, the sound almost bordering on maniacal as he threw back his head. <Do I have a problem?> he echoed, very clearly lingering on the edge of sanity as his voice quavered in speech. Damn straight he had a problem. A big problem. And now his problems were Kenna's problems, because he wanted that damn cat dead. It didn't matter if the Meowth hadn't eaten a single Sentret in her life - which she probably had - he wanted to rid the world of such an awful creature, and right now, Kenna was standing in his way.
<And you gave the thing a name?> he practically spat, shaking his head. How awful. Trainers being pulled in by the charming allure of the little demons. The cat jumped down from her trainers arms at that moment, and the Sentret did not waste time. He didn't figure Kenna agreed with letting him kill the damn cat, and so he'd have to act quickly and instigate a fight before he lost his chances. Lunging forward, he attempted to rake his claws across the cat's belly.

Kenna glanced down at Rio, who looked up at her trainer at about the same time. This Sentret had snapped, no doubt about it. Both of them knew it; their sardonic smiles both said the same thing. It was time to put this thing out of its misery. Before Kenna could say anything to her Meowth, however, the Sentret attacked. Even the quick cat was unable to counter the attack. With a yowl of pain, Rio jumped away from the crazy Sentret and looked at her stomach; four deep gashes, already bleeding, went all the way across her belly.
Oh, hell no. Hissing ferociously, the calm housecat completely gone, Rio dropped to all fours and arched her back, ignoring the pain in her stomach; she could see Kenna digging through her bag already and pulled out what she recognized as a potion. Her back was guarded. Faith in her trainer growing, Rio resisted the urge to snap the Sentret’s neck, instead waiting for a command. <Don’t worry about the potion yet, Kenna… I want a chew toy first.>
Noting Rio’s firm stance, Kenna nodded. The potion would be at the ready, but not yet. Rio had something to prove, something to destroy. ”Growl, then give show him your own claws,” the girl instructed, her blue eyes cutting into the dreadful Sentret’s. It would pay for that.
Yowling angrily, Rio threw herself at the Sentret, claws extended and ready to rip into the Pokemon’s flesh.
::meowth:: Rio used Growl, then Scratch.

Just as he'd thought. The moment he leaped forward and made his challenge clear, Ms. Cute Kitty was gone, replaced by a snarling feral beast that surely wanted to rip him apart. Feeling his blood tinted with sheer adrenaline, the Sentret narrowed his eyes at his opponent in determination. <You're going down, Kitty Cat,> he said confidently, sneering at Rio in contempt. Did he realize he likely had no chance of winning?
Erm, no. No he did not. See, I never said he was particularly smart. And on top of that, the loss of the only family he had, well it'd sent this little critter over the edge quite some time ago. The others on the route were scared of him. Nutty had, quite literally, become his nickname around the place. And as he chittered his challenge at the cat, a few Pokemon crouched in the shadows and silently cheered Rio on. They wanted this Mad Hatter out of their Wonderland, please and thank you.
He shrieked in pain as he was Scratched, stumbling backward. His attack had also been lowered by the Growl, but he did not hesitate before throwing himself at the cat again, in a repeat of his previous attack. <I'm a warrior!> he cried viciously.

<Warriors don’t claim to be as such,> Rio retorted, leaping nimbly to the side and watching as the Sentret stumbled past. Sniffing indignantly, the Meowth caught a whiff of another Sentret nearby, amongst other various Pokemon. She caught the eye of one, lurking in the grasses; its hopeful expression was not missed by the feline. A sneer broke onto her face, though she said nothing regarding their support. It was nice for them to be cheering her on, but Kenna was all she particularly required.
Kenna did not notice the onlookers. Her attention was on the Sentret who found it necessary to attack without due warning, and with such ferocity. ”Rio, Growl again, then Bite when it tries to go in for another attack.” The combination was working well enough so far. Lower the attack power of the prey, then go in. Plus, the growling was a good way to express anger.
Rio did as instructed, quickly turning her attention back to the local loony. With a deep growl, she paced around the Sentret, waiting for the creature to just try and come closer. As soon as he did? Snap.
::meowth:: Rio used Growl, then prepared Bite.

[IDEK... I guess so? Seeing as you followed the technical move pattern?]
Local loony? Well, yes, for all intents and purposes, that just about summed up this psychotic Sentret. He'd once been quite the community man, always willing to help out with the young 'uns and congratulating new mates, and such. To think that such a helpful soul had turned into, well, this. It was alarming and rather sad. What was even more sad was that he really believed that he was doing good by attempting to destroy some cats on the route who really had been particularly innocent. Why, only a week prior, he'd nearly been the death of a house-trained Skitty who'd ventured onto the route to see the wild for the first time. It had only been sheer luck that a few birds had managed to pin him down and allow the terrified feline to flee.
Rio was definitely not afraid of him, however. The fearsome Growling made this apparent as it lowered his attack status even further. God... this thing was a demon. But it seemed to be afraid of him, for it did not attack. Huzzah! He didn't even guess at the cat's ploy, and fell right into her trap as he rushed forward. Shrieking in pain from the jaws clamped around him, he struggled and attempted to Scratch her again in the process. Stupid cat. He hated felines so, so much.
