Reveling in the pain she was causing the Sentret, Rio kept her grip on the creature. She took its attack, ignoring what seemed to be just a minor pain compared to the initial scratch. ”Let it go, then go in for another chomp elsewhere,” Kenna said. Reluctantly, Rio released the Sentret and backed off for a moment. Examining her target, she ran in and reached for the Pokemon’s tail with her jaws.

Fear struck the Sentret's heart as sharp teeth clamped down on his midriff, making him howl in pain as he thrashed desperately against the makeshift prison. Heart thumping so wildly it was probably audible, he eventually managed to free himself of the teeth, leaving a sizable chunk of fur behind. Glaring at the Meowth he got ready to attack again, but something in those eyes and in that last attack had stopped him. ARCEUS BE DAMNED, HE COULDN'T MOVE! Breathing heavily, in the way only wild animals in danger could, he could do nothing but wait for the feline's next move. ::sentret:: Mood: Terrified. Aggressive. Sentret flinched.

Smirking in that awful way that only a feline can properly grin, Rio wiped the excess fur from her mouth with a paw and circled the Sentret. <Too scared to make a move? What happened to all that bravado?> she asked, sneering. This battle was over. Even with the bleeding cuts on her stomach, she had won. She would win. The Sentret didn’t have a Potion waiting for him. Only bleak darkness. At this point, they both knew it.
”Keep it down, keep growling. Then scratch, Rio, go!” Kenna’s heart was racing, the adrenaline getting to her despite her lack of immediate involvement in this particular match. It was her and Rio’s first battle. And they were kicking ass.
A growl, lower than the former ones, formed in Rio’s throat. Quiet and menacing, she walked up to the Sentret, then lunged as she drew closer with her paws outstretched. Time to rip into that face; she hadn’t touched that, yet. Those ears could do with some ripping.

::sentret:: Pokemon encounter ! Sentret gave a hiss of ferocity when the Meowth so rudely struck a sarcastic tone with him. <You're going down, kitten,> Hissed the vengeful squirrel in reply. His body was still a bit tingly and unresponsive from the nerve-hitting bite attack, but he was trying hard to regain control before the cat could come forward again.
Unfortunately, he could not. His body continued to remain completely vulnerable to the predatory cat's vicious attacks. He heard the growl, feeling his strength ever decrease, and gave a hiss of pain and impatience when the terrible claws raked down his fluffy side. He knew he was losing; he could feel the damage building up all over him, the few deep scratches a testament of that. But he wanted to win regardless. For the good of his kind!
Giving a snarl, the Sentret leapt forward and took advantage of the cat's close range, then attempted to drag his claws across the insolent Meowth's face.
Sentret hit by Growl and Scratch. Sentret used Scratch.

Attempting to back up in order to dodge the attack, Rio managed to keep the claws away from her face and throat, though her chest did get nicked by the grasping paws. It was nothing, though, compared to the initial attack. He was getting nervous, getting weaker. It was only his insanity that kept the Sentret going. And an insane creature like that, particularly one who insulted her, was not allowed to remain standing in one piece.
Potion still in hand, ready for use, Kenna smirked. Her concern for Rio was nearly gone, though the scratch on her belly would need attending to later. Battles like this, where she could just toy with her prey, were fun. ”Try and hit another nerve with a bite.”
With a nod, Rio darted forward and lunged for the Sentret’s throat. Nerve, jugular… same thing, right?

And that was that. The Bite hit some kind of nerve or other, and the Sentret simply toppled over with a squeak, to land in the dusty ground, further roughing his once pristine fur. >Don't kill me!< the little Sentret squealed weakly before passing into unconsciousness without another sound. ::sentret:: Sentret has fainted. After giving one last hiss to the unconscious Sentret, Rio padded over to her trainer. The wound on her chest was still bleeding thanks to all her moving about, and although she had gained few injuries after that initial slash, healing would be lovely. Kenna knelt down and sprayed the Potion over her Pokemon’s body. The scratches did not seal up entirely, but the bleeding stopped and the Meowth was feeling much better. She began to lick the blood off of her fur.
<Shall we listen to its final words, or kill him?> Rio asked, glancing at the crazed squirrel.
Kenna walked over to the Sentret and frowned. He had insulted Rio, then attacked her without warning. But he was still cute. Did he deserve to die? He was devoted in his task… but he just didn’t know when to stop. Or if he should stop. That would doom him later, if Kenna didn’t do something about it now. However… ”We’ll leave it. Something else will take care of him.” Nature would take its cruel toll, and neither Kenna nor Rio would bloody their hands. ”Let’s go.”
Nodding, Rio padded alongside Kenna as they headed further down the path towards town.

The Natu hopped along the path. Ah, a lovely day, wasn't it? Hopping along the path he noticed a figure in the grass. Oh, what was this? A Caterpie was crawling along side the road. Natu happily chirped. It was lunch time! He quickly hopped over and started Pecking at the Caterpie.
The Caterpie screamed in pain. She rolled over on her back and shot a String Shot at her unknown attacker. <EPP!! HELP! SOMEONE HELP!> She screamed at the top of her voice. The Natu was covered in Caterpie goo. Great.

Both Rio and Kenna heard the shriek of pain at the same time and rushed around the bend to see the Natu attacking the Caterpie. Insects were adorable enough in Kenna’s eyes, but nature was nature. Everything needed to eat. And besides, the Natu was intriguing. A good target to see if Pokeballs really were completely broken.
”Hey, Rio? Want to help a bird out?” After the battle (and meal) were done, she'd challenge it to a duel.
Nodding at her trainer, the cat bounced over to the scene. <I’ll give you a paw with this. I want to stretch a bit,> she told the Natu. Introduction complete, she lunged at the Caterpie with a scratch attack.

Natu winced at the approach of the feline and Caterpie rejoiced, believing in her innocent young mind that the Meowth was her savior. However, the reactions quickly reversed when the Meowth raked Caterpie across the face, making her squeal in pain. Natu crowed in delight, and pecked the Caterpie in the chest, punturing the soft flesh and dealing significant internal damage. Caterpie writhed and screamed as the natural enemies of cat and bird teamed up to kill her. Looking at the Trainer who had ordered the cat to help out, she gave her a pleading, tear filled gaze as her own, alarmingly scarlet blood dripped onto the dusty ground. In order to defend herself, however weakly, she hurled her rapidly weakening body at the Meowth. ::natu:: Mood: Delighted Natu used Peck on Caterpie.

Rio was able to, more or less, ignore the tackle issuing from the weakening insect, simply slashing at the Pokemon again once she had backed up from its small bleeding body. She regretted her decision of not dodging; her fur was getting dirty. With an indignant sniff, she glared at the bug-type as though it was her fault. Ah, well. There would be time for cleaning later. And maybe Kenna could get a brush once they got to town…?
Kenna was not indifferent to the injured Caterpie, and did feel some amount of pity for the creature. It was cute, and certainly was in pain. But at the same time, the Natu needed food. And Kenna was more curious in the Natu, the stronger creature that it was. As a prey animal, the Caterpie was destined for this fate. And so she let it be so.

Caterpie faints. Meowth gains .5 levels.
<This-this is cruel.> The Caterpie sobbed as the Meowth's claws raked across her chest, drawing blood after being weakened from the previous attacks. She tried to hold in her whimpers, tried to stay brave, like her brothers would have in this kind of situation, but the pain was too great. The fear of dying was so great, so real. She only wanted a sentient rescuer, one that would pity her and love her after saving her from this demon cat.
The nefarious, uncaring Pokemon. The both of them. She stared in horror as the Natu used a well aimed Peck at her head, instantly killing her from the sharp impact. The bird actually poked at her body with her feet before nodding in satisfaction. The deed at been done. Using her beak to tear the Caterpie in half, she motioned for the Meowth to have some in case she was hungry.
Cats did eat bugs, right? <Thank you for your help. Trained Pokemon are so kind.> She chirped with a mouthful of bug in her beak. She swiftly gobbled it up, quite pleased with the taste. Now if only more cats could be this helpful.

Politely declining the offer of a bite of Caterpie, Rio glanced over at her trainer and gave a feline grin. She had nothing against bugs, but she had higher expectations of what a meal should be, now that she had a human looking after her. Kenna could -- she hoped -- provide more. <Nah, just helping out a fellow predator,> she mewed. Recalling the state of her fur, Rio began to clean herself, rough tongue removing all traces of Caterpie blood and goo.
Kneeling down, Kenna tilted her head and smiled cutely at the psychic bird. "You're pretty strong, aren't you?" It would be good practice for Rio, fighting an opponent such as this. Weakening the bird would also provide a new opportunity to test out these seemingly defective Pokeballs. A game. Cat versus bird. "Would you maybe like to have a match against Rio and I, once you're done eating?"

The little Natu nodded in quiet acceptance of the Meowth's refusal. If she expected something better, that was alright. Point was, the Natu had gotten her meal, no matter how gelid the act required to obtain it. Swallowing down the last few bites of her half, she debated asking the Meowth if she was positive she didn't want to share, but decided against it. After all, the refusal had already been voiced, and she didn't want to irritate the kind Pokemon with her pestering. So she pulled the other half toward herself, eating more slowly this time around, savoring it. Was there anything out there better than the juicy taste of Caterpie? She thought not! A nimiety of tasty flavors, all rolled into one fat, scrumptious caterpillar!
Natu considered the offer over a final bite of the bug. She wasn't object to a battle, no. Especially not since she'd recieved such help from the two. The least she could do was offer a show of strength before she departed. She'd seen the Meowth's strong claws, and worried that the other Pokemon might get the better of her, but shrugged it off. Surely they wouldn't hurt her if she lost, right?
... Right?
<Certainly,> she agreed, after swallowing. She straightened herself into a prepared position and gave a nod. <You can go first.>

Having the Natu agree to a match was pleasant, but it really wasn’t required. Simply a formality, though Kenna’s disposition made it appear as though she would have listened to the answer and honestly considered it a necessity. Besides, Pokemon were more likely to allow themselves to be caught if they liked the trainer. Again, that wasn’t needed for capturing Pokemon, but it did always help.
Smiling at her Meowth, who stretched out her limbs and crouched down on all fours, Kenna nodded. This wouldn’t be a fight in which the total destruction of the opponent was necessary, not like their previous encounter with a crazy Sentret. Just a nice exercise. Both Rio and Kenna silently agreed not to rip this bird to shreds. Still, Rio wouldn’t go easy.
”Rio, start out with a Bite attack!”
Darting forward, the Meowth lunged for the psychic bird.

Natu Hit by Bite (Super Effective) Uses Leer + Night Shade (Will not harm Meowth)
'Oh dear. I'm not sure if I can avoid this!' The Natu thought as her wings flapped about in order to escape from the feline's jaws. She had underestimated the Meowth's reflexes, and as her small wings struggled to allow her escape, the Meowth's paws swept her away into Rio's big "meowth", earning a big chomp on the head. Since. Well. Her whole body was her head.
<Yeow!> She chirped, using a devious Leer on the Meowth while attempting to escape. That super effective hit reeked with the power of darkness, something she despised, even if a friend was using it. She protested, sure, but most likely a leer was not going to keep this Meowth from attacking her.
So in order to prove that she could fight, her eyes began to glimmer with a dark shade of their own. Ghostly powers from the dead awakened within her, and in the form of two dark colored beams, they shot out at the Meowth, only doing as much damage as her level. Defense didn't matter, but a Leer never hurt, did it?

Upon seeing the Natu’s bitter response to Rio’s attack, Kenna perked up. Of course! Biting was a Dark-type attack, something the psychic bird would bitterly loathe. The fight just got a lot easier. Still, winning simply by taking advantage of types was no way to gain experience. Nah, let them duke it out a bit in a more fair match. For a while, at least.
Distracted by the glaring eyes of the bird, Rio released her grip and circled around her foe. The strange dark glow that fired from the Natu’s eyes were quite interesting, though the beam simply went right through the feline, who flicked her tail in curiosity as she gave a quick inventory of herself. Nothing seemed to be harmed by the attack. Disregarding it, she glanced at her trainer.
”Go for a growl, then dive in for a scratch, Rio.”
Hissing at the Natu, the Meowth darted forward and lunged with her claws outstretched.

The Natu screamed as the Scratch hit her body. She tumbled backwards and shook her head. Oh dear, she didn't have a chance now did she? She struggled up to her feet and used Leer once again. Then, she started into a run, her beck glowing slightly as she went in for a Peck attack. Guess she should learn how to battle better.

Struck by the peck, Rio staggered backwards, though the attack was not incredibly powerful. The Natu was already weakening. Rio was ready to land another powerful bite on the bird, just as her trainer commanded the very same attack. Unable to hide a contented smile at knowing that the thoughts of her trainer were so similar to her own, Rio went in for another bite. From her position in the background, Rio reached into the makeshift bag she had been given and pulled out an empty Pokeball, looking at it with mild interest as it sparked in her grasp.

Desperate to avoid the clamp of the Meowth's jaws, Natu let out a frightened chirp and flapped out of the way, landing hard on the ground, uninjured this time around, but still a little stunned. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the trainer pull something out. A savory treat for her Pokemon, perhaps?
But they were in the middle of a battle, and so she didn't have much time to ponder what it could be. Struggling weakly to her feet, Natu shook the dust from her feathers and ran toward the cat with determination, aiming to jab Rio with her beak when she got close enough. It was obvious that there was not much fight left in her, however.
