Seizel had finally found a cool way to get some shards, and he had heard many great things about this place. Putting on a miner's hat, and deciding to think of what he could use to light up the caves once he went inside. Well, now he had another conundrum on his hands as he was trying to determine what he should wear today. Rubbing a hand through his brown hair slightly and made it fall in front of his blue eyes at the moment. This was rather awkward, and there was no telling who else had been watching him messing with his hair like a girl would. Ah well, he was bound to run into someone sooner or later as he looked through his bag. There were flashlights and enough batteries in the bag to keep him well-lit within the cave. Especially since he had a mine coal hat on.
Tugging on his shirt as the buttons on it were undone for now revealing the bullet-proof vest underneath, but that was just standard for Seizel. Even being ex-military, he still had some old habits that stuck with him to the end. The navy blue pants he had on were embroidered with a gold lining along them, and the shirt was the same way. Then horizontal lines went upwards matching each of the buttons on his uniform, and Brutus, the sawk was wearing his usual karate uniform. Yes, a fighting type was excellent for this area since he would easily be able to just tear at the rock with no problem. After all, rock smash would be highly useful here for a change. Picking up the tools he was given to use, and the weapon of choice as the pickax.
Hefting it over his shoulders and then turned to Brutus, "Ready to go in?" he asked his pokemon, and Brutus nodded as they turned to head into the dark cave. Seizel's light the only thing that would be able to light it up.

It had taken quite a bit of convincing to get Kiara into the tunnels.
Only minutes before, she had peacefully walked into the Ruins, greeted by Archaeologists and Paleontologists and a bunch of other -ologists excavating the tunnels and studying their findings. There was also an abundance of trainers walking by, carrying pickaxes and shovels with their Pokémon close behind. Some proudly displayed fat pouches if shards, while others stared dejectedly at their pitiful handful. Liz beamed as she pulled her red hair back with a rubber band. As she placed an army green cap over her head, she thought about the shards waiting for her in those caves. She and her Pokémon would fill their bags with shards before triumphantly marching into the shop to trade. The only question was, which Pokémon?
Liz fingered her pokeballs thoughtfully as she considered which one to release. She knew her Vulpix couldn't excavate the ruins, and Quil would just throw a tantrum if she so much as mentioned physical labor. Most of her other Pokémon only had attacks that would do little to no damage of the hard packed earth and stone below. So she was left with one cjoice.
One irritating, regretful, and hesitant choice. With a groan, the young trainer released Kiara, her Skitty. Hell~oo! the Skitty mewed sweetly. She lifted her head, eyes still closed, and strutted around in a haughty manner. She opened her eyes to get a look at the thousands of people crowding around, all fighting and shoving because they simply must see Kiara!
She was greeted by a nearly empty yard, filled with excavators and dust-covered treasure hunters. Immediately the Skitty's expression soured and she swung her head around to glare at Liz. Would you please explain to me just why[/i] I am in such a filthy place,[/i] she hissed through gritted teeth. Liz squared her shoulders bravely and tried to explain. Kiara was always like this. Her main goal in like was to be cute and adored by millions. Shasta Ruins wasn't exactly her favorite place.
"I need you to help me dig up some shards." She quickly held up a hand to silence Kiara before she started whining again. "You're the only Pokémon with an attack suited for the Ruins, okay? I need your help." Both trainer and Pokémon glared at each other as though engaged in the World Championship Staring Contest. They got a few sidelong glances from archaeologists and miners passing by.
Finally Liz gave in with a sigh. "I'll enter you in a contest once I reach the city," she promised. Immediately Kiara brightened and skipped over to the entry to the cave. Well, what are you waiting for? Let's go! With an exasperated groan, the trainer delved into the darkness of the caves.

Seizel was glad he had taken the chance to try and keep his Pokémon nearby. Well, Brutus was certainly the only one he really could rely on at the moment, and since he wouldn't want to be left in this place all alone. The darkness of the cave suddenly turned to brightness as he looked inside with his coal mine hat. Looking behind him he noticed a girl entering the cave entrance, and then looked down to see her skitty. Well, that was an odd Pokémon to bring to this place, but he had to admit she had balls to enter this cave alone. Even so he was going to make sure that every member had a good time here, and then he smiled as he turned around.
Waving one hand as he gave her a wide smile even if she couldn't see it. The projection of light shimmering on Liz's face, and then he blinked a few times. "Hello there! Are you new here? I've definitely not seen your face ever, I'm Seizel!" he said, holding out his hand to her, and letting his smile spread across his face. Showing a little too much enthusiasm for just meeting her and Brutus was already starting to punch some rocks within the cave. Making the whole area shake a little, but he was making dents in the rock at least with his fists as he made his way towards a rather soft spot. Suddenly, a blue shard fell to the ground and Seizel noticed it out of the corner of his eye. Brutus picked it up and then put it in the cart he had pulled in here with him. Seizel knew fully well Brutus could handle a majority of the labor and he wouldn't need to worry about digging.
Oh, the joys of rock smash.

Liz squinted into the ominous darkness of the cave. She could hardly see a foot in front of her! Thinking quickly, the trainer swung her bagbonto the ground and fumhled for the zipper. Onelce her fingers found something hardband cold, she grasped it and yanked. With a zzzzzt! sound, the bag's contents were available. Once again, Piz had to fish through the darkness.
Finally, she found what she needed. After flicking a switch, her flashlight beamed around the narrow tunnels. It was big enough to grant her sight, but small enough to hold in her mouth if she needed both hands. With the light on, closing the bag and slinging it back over her shoulder was simple business.
Kiara, on the other hand, wished the lights stayed off. She gazed in horror at her dust-coated paws. This nightmare of a cave was befouling her silken paws! The Skitty glared daggers at Liz. Oh-ho-ho, she would pay!
Another light ahead caught Liz's attention. So someone else was down there? The trainer quickened her pace, striding over. Sure enough, another trainer was waiting. He seemed to be several years older than Liz, but when he saw her he gave an enthusiastic greeting and held out a hand. Liz grinned back, shaking his hand. "I'm Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Liz. Bit too old fashioned otherwise, you know? Oh, and this is my first time here! I can't wait to get started." All this was said rather quickly and with a huge smile. Two overly-enthusiastic greetings from two overly-enthusiastic trainers. Oh happy day!
As he stooped down to pick up an unearthed shard, she turned to Kiara. "Alright, use dig now!" The Skitty looked at her in horror. "Oi, do you want to get in the contest?" Liz's voice hardened. Grumbling, the Skitty began quarrying the walls. There was a flash of color and a small gem shard fell to the ground. Liz grabbed it and examined the blue crystal curiously. It was pretty- a translucent blue color. Quickly she slipped it into her bag's small pocket. This was her first step in the Shasta Ruins!

Seizel noticed the skitty at the last second and was quite impressed a trainer like her had one. Even so, this wasn't a place for little kids, and he'd do well to look over her like an older brother. That's when he went in for a hug instead, and then patted her head softly afterwards laughing joyously. "My, how the young get more enthusiastic these days, it makes me ripe with joy," he said calmly. Brutus rolled his eyes and continued rock smashing his way through the cave as he made a tunnel of his own. Seizel was quite impressed with pokemon's prowess at getting things done. Even if this was a small cave and it could cause someone to lose their mind.
Oh well, at least now he had someone to converse with while doing the chore of digging through the cave wall in hopes of finding more shards. Brutus was focused no his work and wasn't one to actually hold a conversation with the other pokemon there. In fact, he was content digging through the dirt and getting it all over his own clothes. Noticing the skitty wasn't too happy about the environment, but didn't want to comment on it since it was none of his business. Funny how most of Seizel's pokemon were already stronger than it, but he paid that no mind. "Oh, don't forget that shards can be anywhere, so what brings you to Cheyenne, just looking to become a trainer or a coordinator?" he simply asked her, smiling politely.
Picking up another shard chunk that flew his way thanks to Brutus's rather strong punches, but he would have to do some work himself as he started to pick up a pickax. Soon he was chiseling away at the wall as well in hopes of finding some shards for himself, listening to Liz for an answer.

Kiara glanced at the Sawk disdainfully. Obviously, he had no sense of hygiene. Of fashion, for the matter. Just look at that hideous outfit! Ugh, who in their right mind would wear such a thing? Then again, a Sawk wouldn't look good in anything else, anyway. Sniffing scornfully, she continued her digging.
Liz watched approvingly as the Skitty and Sawk burrowed through the tunnels like pros. If only Kiara could be as diligent as Brutus. She actually had to bribe her own pokemon judt to get the selfish skitty to help her. So the cave was dusty, a good bath would fix that in a snap! She shook her head slightly. At least the Skitty was digging. She'd be in quite a bind if Kiara had refused.
Every footstep seemed to echo in the dark cave. Spooky, she thought. She normally liked the darkness, didn't really mind being unable to see. But the blackness of the tunnels seemed to be thick and everlasting, waiting to swallow them up, driven away only by their lights. She grinned to herself. Now she was being ridiculous. It was just a cave.
At Seizel's question, she jerked up and turned to him. "Mmm, just a trainer. My family breeds and studies canine pokemon, and the best way to do is through training." She glanced at Kiwra again. "We don't just train canines, though." she added quickly.

Brutus wasn't too concerned for the other Pokémon there since he was able to ignore it. As he was examining the rock for some shards to actually get a hold on, but there wasn't much luck. Even so, he continued to dig away at the rock without a care in the world, and just let his trainer converse as he noticed another shard falling to the ground in silence as if it echoed around the chambers for a minute. Brutus had no problems getting dirty and used some more of his rock smash against the walls to make another cave entirely for himself. Seizel picked up the next shard, and seemed to scuffle around a little.
There were a lot more shards that needed to be discovered and he didn't want to be part of the system that would take him down if he was being unruly. "I see, well, coming from a military background I tend to have strategies many others don't usually see that would be possible," he said calmly. It wasn't as if he was boasting, but some part of him was smiling about the fact he did have a tactical advantage at times. Well, he didn't have much experience with anything else, and that included women since he pretty much treated everyone the same in general.

Liz raised her eyebrows, feeling somewhat impressed. "Military background? Not sure if thay's good or bad, but it definitely gives you tactical advantages." Honestly, she had no idea how to react. Should she act impressed? Sympathetic? Well, pity was probably out of the question. As Seizel mentioned thus, an air of pride seemed to envelope him. It wasn't arrogance… just self satisfaction. She herself felt this everytime her pokemon won in a battle, or she broke a personal record.
"Yeah, my history is pretty boring. Grew up, got a pokemon, came to Cheyenne and here I am!" She left out the whole traumatic deal with her becoming terrified of her own pokemon. Too dramatic and, thinking back on it, it felt like a complete overreaction. Liz felt relief that her face rarely flushed, though even if she did, it probably wouldn't show in the cave's darkness.
Kiara fixed her sigh on the walls, refusing to look at her filthy paws. The second she got out of this nightmarish hole she would made a wild dash for the nearest pokemon salon. The Skitty raked her paws into the dirt in stone with an aura of anguish. Drama Queen. The faster she dug up shards, the sooner they'd fet out of this cave. Feeling slightly encouraged by this thought, she began to dig with renewed vigor.

Seizel didn't seem to see a problem with any of this, but he shrugged for a moment. "Well, it's not all fun and games being part of the military. The only thing that was really strict about it was my father, and he could be a hard-ass at times," Seizel admitted, and kept chiseling into the wall, and hoped he was getting closer to finding some of those damned shards. Honestly, it felt like the wall was made of iron or something the way he was barely chipping at it. Brutus was having a hay day with how he was going about it. Pummeling rock after rock without a care in the world, and when he got to shards. Well, the gems on the wall normally gave away shattering everywhere.
Needless to say, there was more than enough shards for everyone to be happy, and he couldn't stress how important it was to collect them. Seizel was admiring the dirt for a second, before he came up with another question. "So, do you think your main team likes you quite a bit?" he asked her, deciding whether or not to switch his weapon of choice. The pickax felt like it was doing nothing, but he couldn't really see down below him. Seizel had actually been digging a hole downwards, but just the start of one. If chunks of rock or dirt got in the other trainer's way he would undoubtedly apologize.

Watching Seizel hack at the walls, she herself remembered a tool she had picked up earlier. Pulling a shovel off her back, she began digging at the loose ground Kiara had dislodged. "Well, I can imagine it wasn't exactly the time of your life. Must have been exhausting," she commented, shifting some rocks aside. Liz fell into silence, concentrating on the task at hand until her partner spoke up again.
"Mmm. Most of them do. I have a few pokemon with.... strong personalities." she laughed. "Either way, they're part of the family, so what can I do? And what about you?"
Her mind wandered to her other pokemon. Spaki, Kitsune, or Hishou would love to help her dig up shards. However, none of them had moves strong enough to break through dense stone. It was quite a shame- she would be having such fun if one of her good natured pokemon had come.
Bad Liz! Kiara is helping you, don't be such an ungrateful brat! She silently reprimanded herself.
The Skitty's claws raked across the rock walls. She gritted her teeth, and another hardened layer spread over her claws. She reared up, slamming her paws against the stone. Kiara sighed, dropping down onto all fours to move on to the next area.
She approached a pile of fallen rocks- possibly from an earth quake. Thinking the landslide looking promising, she began digging through the small boulders.

Seizel really didn't need to understand her point of view to get where he needed to be, but he was grateful she was at least sympathetic unlike most people. Some of them would have just shunned him for even telling this to her, but he sensed she had a justified sense of how to tell people apart. Whatever, he really didn't mind the atmosphere here and at least Liz was a fun girl to be around. Yet, at the same time, he felt like a bit of a pedophile for doing this with her, since they were in a dark cave. Seizel kind of felt disgusting about it, but at the same time this was like hanging out with a little sister he never had.
"You know, you're like the little sister I never had while growing up. It would have been nice to have some siblings at least, but not sure how you would react to that statement normally," he said calmly as he dug up a chunk of shards. Brutus managed to make his way into another cave system, but he soon turned his attention to the outlying wall. Boy, he sure didn't talk much, but he had no need to since the skitty was busy getting herself dirty. That was just amusing to Brutus, as he chipped further into the wall, and avoiding destiny too. "So do you like going for long walks on the beach, looking at the stars?" Seizel asked jokingly since he never would do that with her.
Even if she begged him, since she was so much younger, but he hadn't disclosed his age really. Twenty-one years of age was definitely a leap, and not bothering to take his chances either.

As she walked along in her usual, care-free way, the red head didn't seem to notice Seizel's slight discomfort. Perhaps she was a bit too trusting and innocent. After a certain... traumatic event, she really hadn't been outside much until moving to Cheyenne. The poor girl had no idea about the dangers of the world. So she just strolled around with her thoughts wandering aimlessly between their chatter. She had a tendency to do that. One moment, she could be thinking about a new training routine for her pokemon. Then a minute later she'd realize her thoughts had drifted to, for example, the meal she would cook that night.
In fact, at that moment her mind had wandered off to the far away world of dreams(for she had actually had a very strange dream about a eel in a fun house the night before. Don't ask), when he suddenly jerked her back to reality with a comment about her feeling like a 'little sister.'
A bit abrupt and shocking, but it made her smile nonetheless. "Well that's nice to know. I was an only child too, so I don't really know if I'm suited for the sibling job." Once again, she was blissfully unaware of how strange that would sound to most other people.
Her eyes caught on Kiara as the Skitty continued to burrow into the caves. She dug her shovel into another pile of loose rocks and shifted them to the side, alert for anything shiny and translucent blue. Did shards come in colors other than blue? Whatever, shards were shards. But it was quite a surprise to see the pampered pokemon working so diligently. She would've expected a half-hearted job from the stubborn cat. Evidently it hadn't occurred to the pokemon that she could do a cruddy job of digging while still sticking to the terms of their oral contract.
Next, Seizel inquired about watching the stars while taking a stroll on the ocean's shore. Even Liz could hear how wrong that sounded. But there didn't seem to be any bad implications behind the words(other than to tease her) so she quickly replied with a smirk, "Well personally I love stargazing. Though I assume that if someone were to seriously ask me a question like that, I should be fleeing in the opposite direction." She giggled to herself as she shifted more rocks with her shovel.

((Don't ask about the eel-in-a-fun-house thing. I seriously had a dream like that and it somehow worked its way into my post.))

Seizel's mind was reeling with just this one thought process, and he couldn't really decide if it was great or not for him to even be thinking like that. Dig, dig, dig, dig, that was the only thing running through his mind at this very moment thanks to the site being a very popular area, but the digging was driving him mad. There was no end to it, and even Brutus was getting fed up punching rocks as he decided to just pick up the remaining shards that had smashed around the area. Listening to Liz's response did give him a bird's eye view of what was important now.
So, he just decided to pick up some shards while he could, and Brutus was shuffling through all the blue shards as well. Managing to try developing his acting lessons for the first contest battle. Whatever, it wasn't a necessary skill to really have at the moment, but he'd soon have to deal with leaving this place to go back to his usual journey. "Well, one thing I won't miss is the long ride here and back...that was certainly quite the walk. Not that I'm missing digging at the moment either," he said calmly and slightly agreed with Liz about the whole walking on the beach thing.
Brutus was blindly stumbling about trying to find what little he could of the shards they had blasted through, and normally put them in the bag when he found them.

Liz smirked slightly at his response. "I don't really mind. After all, a trainer's journey is really nothing but walking and fighting." she laughed shortly. "Besides, you can probably tell that I can keep myself occupied pretty well. Whether it's thinking up battle strategies of chatting my pokemon's ears off, I always find a way to keep myself busy."
It was true. She was often too absorbed in her thoughts to really get bored. Sometimes she sang songs, sometimes she thought up cruddy stories. The redheaded girl would often find herself simply observing nature. Her eyes picked out miniscule details that most people wouldn't think twice about, like the different shapes and colors of the leaves on trees. As scatterbrained as she could be, Liz held a deep appreciation for nature.
Thinking about that, she felt a twinge of shame. Although she said that, it was clear that she had a sense of disdain towards Kiara, and some of her other pokemon. So they had some (extremely) difficult personalities. That didn't mean she should be badmouthing her pokemon.
Not that Kiara really cared. In fact, the Skitty could really care less what her trainer thought of her. As long as someone was able to appreciate and adore the kitten pokemon, she was content. As she blasted though the tunnel walls, she thought about the possible tricks she could preform at the city. She'd win the contest by a landslide, and be all over the news. Everyone would know her name, people would swarm the cities just to get a glimpse of her performance...!
But she was getting ahead of herself. First step: get out of this Arceus Forsaken hole!

As rock was flying past his face it had brought many memories of when he was using dynamite to capture bad guys when they tried to run away. Sure, the feudal era of where he had been had changed a lot since his time in the military. Guns were formed and anything could actually kill a person now, but even if that were the case what sort of world would this have been if those things actually existed. After all, guns were useless against rock pockemon and the only other types of pokemon that really had to worry about it were the normal types. Even then, if they were brought to the slaughter like that, pretty sure, many of the other pokemon would defend them cause of how weak they are. No pokemon was without it's own abilities though.
Any human having to face against a pokemon really needed one of their own but was it really that necessary to use a pokeball to catch one. "You ever wonder what it would be like if pokeballs weren't even invented and we didn't force our pokemon to fight each other like common animals?" Seizel asked suddenly, and was doubting having to become a trainer in the first place. Seriously, he didn't find using pokemon all that entertaining, but since having been a kid, he always wanted one. Never leaving any of them in a pokeball, and in fact he was quite glad Brutus never liked going in his pokeball at all. Starting to wonder what was wrong with this scenario too. Well, he'd wait to hear her answer either way.
"That is true, keep on walking towards the future and don't let anything get in your way," he added, while collecting several more shards, but there was still a lot to go through as the dirt on the ground from his Sawk had been hiding a lot of them.

Liz halted at that. Seizel's words made her think. Why did they force their pokemon to battle? It really didn't seem fair, sending your friends and companions out to fight one another, only watching while they do all the dirty work. But at the same time... "Well, it is true that sometimes it isn't fair to force your pokemon to battle. They could be sick, or injured, or tired. I know there are trainers who have no regard for their pokemon's health. Some will treat them like fighting machines, created purely to gain them fame." 'Fame, fame...' She looked up in surprise at the sudden echo to her voice. Fighting back a grin, she resumed walking.
"But lots of pokemon enjoy battling. If they don't want to fight, we shouldn't make them, but if they do, then that's their choice." The young trainer shrugged. Sometimes it felt unfair, sending her pokemon out to fight. But at the same time, if one of her pokemon were to loose, then that would leave her to take the blame. It would be her fault for not training them well enough and not leading them properly.
Liz's usual grin had shrunk into a small smile. Yeah, she and her pokemon were on equal ground. Her green eyes flicked to Kiara, still digging furiously.
As her trainer spoke, the Skitty pricked her ears to listen. Maybe she's not as bad as I thought...[/u] she thought to herself. Then she looked back down at her filthy paws and scowled again. That doesn't mean I'm forgiving her for this.

Seizel was nodding to her words, and decided that she was alright to hang with after all he needed someone to talk to right now. Brutus wasn't helping his cause at all since he was just basically digging away with no words to say to any of them. Until he started to help Seizel pick up more shards lying around. Understanding her words was one thing, but them actually agreeing on it was another.
"Well, yeah, it seems bad in a way, but I do admit that when you are able to get your way with someone it works out just fine. That's why I'm not too fond of some trainers that treat the pokemon the way they do. I plan on abolishing all of them If I can, and if they're just doing it with an excuse like, "to get stronger" they shouldn't have one in the first place," he said to her.
Seizel was just letting his mind ramble on as he thought about things while collecting more shards.

More shards spilled to the ground as Kiara and Liz dug. They had fallen into an odd rhythm as they excavated the cave. As Kiara dug, Liz shifted rocks. As Liz walked, Kiara loosened the stones from the wall. Back, forth, back, forth, a pattern they had both developed over time.
The trainer listened as her companion spoke, nodding in agreement. "I've heard of a Team Death before. Though I don't quite agree with all of their ideals, they do have a point when they say not everyone is worthy of being a trainer. Pokemon are our companions, and without them, we couldn't do half the things we do today. Heck, we can hardly dig in the Ruins without our pokemon!" She flashed a grin at her Skitty, who had to mew in agreement.
If you ask me, Kiara sniffed, speaking for the first time. [/i]Humans have become far too reliant on pokemon. What if, someday, we refuse to help our trainers? They can't force us. Simple facts are, pokemon are far more powerful than humans. Even with your fancy machines, we still come out on top.[/i] She smirked arrogantly before returning to her job.

"Well, long as they don't cross me I won't have a problem with them then. After all it seems that I'm the only one that can actually stand up to most people without backing down. Might be cause of my military training for that. There might be a time when our Pokémon never want to fight again, because we do tend to rely on them a little too much," he said calmly as he glanced over at the skitty for a minute. Yes, he was able to understand her, but he had made no mention of it earlier. Deciding to interweave both conversations so he could understand what was going on as Brutus kept digging silently.
Now that they had finished collecting extra shards, Seizel started to dig again, and felt his shovel hit another huge ball of pure glass it felt like. Suddenly shards spewed into the air, and lodged themselves into the ceiling as Seizel was reaching up to grab them, he soon had more to say. Brutus kept chiseling away at the rock to see how far into it he could get while Seizel soon spoke even more. "Well, let's see, this conversation has lead me to believe that Pokémon tend to lead to a deeper relationship between others. That's what I like about them too, is they somehow make you interact with other people and meet lots of interesting people too," he said calmly.
Referring to Liz and her companion, as much as the skitty probably disliked him for listening in on her talking.

Liz glanced over at the Skitty in surprise. It was rare when she deemed someone 'worthy' of her attention. Though the feline did have a point. If pokemon were to become tired of the harsh treatment they received and suddenly turn on their trainers… well, it would be unpleasant to say in the least. Though she doubted that would ever happen. Most trainers held a deep bond with their companions.
She grinned as shards suddenly burst into the air, glowing with the beam from her flashlight. The translucent gems scattered pale specks of light on the walls, and for a few seconds, the cave was lit up by the shards.
Then, all too soon, gravity took hold and the crystals lodged themselves back into the walls of the cave. Liz held back a sigh of disappointment as the show ended. That would be something she'd remember for a long time. She then grinned at his next words. "Yeah. My parents actually met while battling. They became rivals for a while and eventually began traveling together. And you know what happens after that." she smirked. "Well, facts are, if it weren't for pokemon, I wouldn't be here today."
Kiara whit a glare at the male trainer. Just because she had voiced her thoughts didn't mean he had the right to address her! Whipping her head around in a snobby manner, she Humph!'d and continued digging.
Liz grinned at the Skitty. Shaking her head in exasperation, she laughed. "Well… it's pretty clear that pokemon have just as much as a personality as people do." she chuckled.
