Level 10 Pickup & Technician Scratch, Growl, Bite, Fake Out Water Pulse When Elliot arrived at the entrance to the excavation site, he found himself entirely alone except for the constant nagging of his Meowth. The weather was mild, allowing for his usual semi-formal button down - a handsome onyx today - and making his trek for the most part pleasant. The road, scenic enough that he wasn't overcome by boredom, yet plain enough that he had little reason to dally. His partner, wholly absent.
"Don't wander off," he said sharply, eyes turning serious as they flitted down to freeze his cat before she could slip off into the cave. "They'll be plenty of shiny things for you to collect once our partner gets here. Until then, stay put." Miesha had quite the habit of trying to disappear when she suspected something interesting was nearby, though at present Elliot didn't see it entirely as a nuisance. Indeed, Meowths were notorious for bringing little odds and ends back to their trainers. He had set his hopes high for just this reason. "Just make sure that you collect all the shinies into this bag, okay?" he said, voice closer to a croon now. He earned only a short nod from his Pokémon as she paced eagerly about.
With a roll of his eyes he leaned casually back against the cave wall, adjusting his hat so that it tilted forward and cast a shadow over his face. Surely, he believed he must look rather suave and mysterious in such a stance, just like so many characters in fiction. He was conscious of appearing a bit pretentious, but he shooed that thought away for now. Imagining himself having perfected that sort of image was pleasant and needn't be spoiled.
With the topic of image on his mind, he took a moment to wonder what the person he was meant to be meeting looked like. He hadn't gotten much besides a name. "Erin." Not even an age. He only knew that she was a girl. He didn't often make the company of the other sex, but she surely couldn't be the delicate type that he so disliked if she wished to excavate with him. He yawned and glanced at his watch. Ah, this was what happened when you arranged a meeting over the internet.

Never knew what you were going to get. Erin was so deadbeat tired from staying up all night, worrying about whether or not the guy she was going to be meeting up with would like her at all. The last time she tried out this digging thing... well, it didn't go too great. She had a shovel this time, though, and she brought along her Yanma, Lugh.
Recently she had a rather bit of trouble with the young bug, who more often than not would loose his head for no good reason. It kind of was worrying, actually... He had attacked an Oddish for no good reason, and nearly hurt Erin herself. There was something wrong with him, and she wast determined to figure it out.
... Anyway, the reason why she was late. She had stayed up half the night, and had fallen asleep without setting her alarm, and well... now there they were. She had her backpack slung across her shoulders, her usual dress folded away inside of it as she wore her casual clothes-- baggy jeans and a dark blue t-shirt. The clothes she normally wore when she was feeling less than herself, down in the weather, or otherwise. She had her brownish, ginger hair tied back in a ponytail that was slowly becoming unraveled as she bolted for the ruins.
Lugh, of course, had no problem at all keeping up. Upon spotting a trainer who looked like he was waiting around, the bug type flew right on over to him and started circling his head. "Lugh, Lugh," Erin called out, feminism forced into her voice as she caught up, panting.
"Aah, I'm so sorry," she breathed through her panting, feeling extremely embarrassed as her face went bright scarlet, her freckles popping out brightly over the sea of red. "Lugh's just a bit excited, um... you don't happen to be Elliot, do you? I'm Erin. We should get started..." She was eager to get going, actually, hoping to avoid any awkward conversations that were bound to happen because today was just such an awful day and why oh why did she sleep in...?!
Nervous as all heck for being late, she tried to make up for the lost time by getting straight to the point. "Try looking around with Foresight, Lugh," she told him, ushering him off to go look while the trainers met one another. Besides, he was less likely to freak out if he was listening to her commands, anyway. Or so she hoped.

The sudden sound of buzzing wings over his head caused him to startle, his hat almost falling forward off of his head. His eyes flicked towards the entrance at a voice that was somehow not quite right to find a boy hailing the Yanma that had taken such a sudden shine to him. "Yeah, that's me," he said, trying for a politely confused smile. The boy was in quite the hurry and Elliot wasn't quite sure whether or not to take suspicion to that. He was almost entirely sure that the "Erin" he was supposed to meet was female and these facial features strongly spoke male to him. His voice too, seemed forced, as if he was purposefully trying to speak in a higher pitch. A funny sort of feeling welled up in his chest. Perhaps...
Ah, but there was only one way to find out.
"Excuse me," he said as his Meowth scampered off to help the Yanma, careful to keep his voice polite and his expression pleasant. The very last thing he wanted was to make this person, he or she, uncomfortable, but he couldn't let the matter rest until he knew for sure. "I'm sorry, but I thought the person I was supposed to be meeting was a girl..."

She stared up at the older boy, her anxieties kicking in as she realized he had seen right through her... and called her out on it. She swallowed, the buzzing in her ears either from the pounding of her blood, or the Yanma searching for a pocket of shards to collect.
"Um, well, you see," she tried to explain, stammering a little bit as her voice sounded more and more forced. "I.. AM a girl... I just, I was born..." This was so much harder to explain than she remembered it being on TV. Maybe because she was prepped to be embarrassed. Maybe because she had been wearing her dress, and felt all dolled up.
Right now, though? "I was just born... the wrong gender... Th-that's all, I mean, I'd like to be considered a girl, but I mean, I can totally see... how you got to that... conclusion, and all.. since..." She started trailing off, shutting her yap finally to let him answer. She just hoped things didn't get any more awkward. Thankfully the Pokemon seemed to be off to a much better start.

Elliot went to great pains to keep his face patient as the other trainer flushed and started to panic, but despite his greatest efforts he couldn't keep the corners of his mouth from wavering upwards. He turned his eyes to the side towards the end of her explanation, focusing on his significantly less amusing Meowth as she scampered around to collect the shards that Yanma was dislodging. "I... I see."
He could hardly believe this. Out of all of the people who could have responded to his call and out of all of of those responses that he had rejected, this was the partner he had found. Lady chance had a very clever sense of humor and after a moment he felt he couldn't keep himself from giggling and then bursting into laughter. His hands were on his stomach and he so very desperately wanted to tell the girl - for she was a girl - that he wasn't laughing because he thought anything was wrong with her. It was just so very hard to regain his composure at the moment.

Erin could hear the sounds, but they were distant and far off in her head. She watched him look away, trying not to smile, trying not to laugh. Her ears burned, as she continued to fumble about.
Now he was laughing. At her? With her? At himself? She didn't know. She just wanted to get him to focus on something else, really. "Yes, well, it's okay. Lots of people make that mistake, honest," she tried to insist, hoping he wasn't finding her weird or funny. Maybe it was something the Meowth was doing.
She was hopeful, really, as she looked over at the two Pokemon. They were getting hard to work with their digging. She tightened the grip on her shovel, partially to release her nerves, partially BECAUSE of her nerves. "Any-Way," her voice cracked midword, making her dig her nails into the wooden part of the shovel, "we should go see if we can help, right?" She tried to change the subject as best as she could. This was never a good subject for her.

He tried to take a calming breath, found his air being jerked out in chuckles, and finally managed to stifle his fit long enough to hear what the girl was saying. "No, no," he said, putting his hands up with a widening grin. Oh, he was the very image of the Chesire right now. "It's not - I'm not laughing at you or anything. It's just -" He cut himself off to fall into a fit of giggles feminine enough that they would have bothered his sense of masculinity if everything wasn't so absolutely hilarious. "Ah, yeah. Let's go help."
He looked over at his Meowth to find her adamantly scratching at a crack in the wall, though her eyes and attention were on the Yanma, and he took a moment to admire the dragonfly's work so far. Clearly it was the more proficient of the two at breaking apart the walls. His Miesha, however... She abandoned the crack, leaving it to the other Pokemon while she looked for another hot spot. Her eyes almost seemed to glow in what little light there was. Just as he had hoped, the Meowth had an eye for treasure of the shiner persuasion.
"I didn't bring a shovel," he said, sporting a sly smile as he looked the girl over again and flicked on a flashlight. "Maybe we should just collect the shards and let them do the work. If you dig in the same spots as your Yanma he'll have to be more careful and you'll probably slow him down." She didn't look particularly strong and a shovel wouldn't much use on rocky walls without a great deal of force behind it. The ground was still fair game, of course, but he doubted there were as many shards there. It seemed wholly more efficient to play the clean-up crew while the Pokemon excavated.

It certainly seemed like a good idea, especially since Lugh was making quick work of the walls. Switching off and on from Foresight to Ancient Power seemed to really do the trick. With each attack he got even faster, the sounds of his buzzing nearly drowning out the sound in each area.
Erin's shoulders stopped tensing up and her smile started to mimic the wide grin of Elliot, probably because he had a bright enough smile to light up a whole room full of people. "Yeah, I guess you're right. Let's go then?" She eagerly went to catch up with the dragonfly and cat duo, picking up a shard that they had missed. "Keep going Lugh, you're doing a great job," she encouraged, watching his power tear open the wall. It seemed every once and a while the Ancient Power activated it's side effect of boosting every one of his stats, making him even stronger.
The Meowth seemed to be doing a good job of picking up the shards that showered the ground, though, which was exciting. She helped the cat pick up the mess, wondering just how many they would manage to collect. She wasn't all that great at small talk, but she was dying to know more about her partner... Maybe she should just wait for him to ask? She didn't want to embarrass herself more... Argh, well, what the heck, right?
"Do you have any other Pokemon?" She asked him curiously, wondering if the Meowth was his starter. "Or any badges or ribbons? I'm still working on getting my first ribbon..." She commented lightly, a smile growing ever wider on her freckled face as she opened up to the stranger.

"Would you like me to carry the shovel?" he asked with a chuckle as his Meowth took a small detour to loop affectionately through his legs. That seemed the sort of thing a gentleman would do when accompanying a young lady. Ah, but he had to remind himself that chivalry was presumptuous. Woman were quite capable of carrying their own belongings. Still, he felt better having made the offer.
He was still struggling with his private joke as he started gathering shards and his amusement showed clear on his face. He was certainly going to tell her - it would be a crime to keep something so great to himself - but the timing was the question. His thoughts on the matter were interrupted by the other's voice. "Only one that I plan on using and that's my starter, a Feebas," he answered, fingering a shard and holding it up to his flashlight. "I don't have any badges or ribbons yet either, but I plan on going for both," he said thoughtfully. "Probably the gyms first. It's easier to fight than be stylish."

It was a bit big in her arms, actually, being made for a full grown person and she still had plenty of growing to do. With a smile she held it out to him, glad to let him hold it. He was still chuckling over something, but she was glad he was just having so much fun. This was turning out better than she expected, actually...
"I have a full team already," she commented lightly. "Lugh used to belong to another trainer, but he couldn't keep him anymore so I took him, along with a Paras, off his hands. My starter was a Kricketot, so I'm kind of like a bug master." She couldn't help but giggle a little, considering that a lot of girls (and boys, too) didn't like bug Pokemon too much. She wasn't especially fond of them... but every Pokemon deserved a good owner, even the bugs.
When he talked about prefering gym battling to contests, but wanting to try both, she heartfully agreed. "I want to do both too, but I'm more of a contest person. I don't really like how vicious Gym battles can get." She knew she hadn't trained her Pokemon that well for that very reason. She scooped up a couple more shards as the Yanma yanked them from the wall with Ancient Power. He was really powerful already, and she was thankful for it... She just hoped he would be okay in an actual contest or fight.

The shovel was admittedly heavy in Elliot's hand, himself not much stronger than Erin, but he whipped it under his arm and tried to put on a show of it being light as he listened to the girl talk. "I don't really like the idea of having too many of the same type on my team at once, actually." He held up his flashlight to shield himself from a few stray fragments the Yanma had torn from the wall. "I think two would probably be my maximum if I really liked the moveset on another one."
A pause.
"Say," he said suddenly, Chesire grin slowly returning despite his best efforts. "You wouldn't mind talking about that... "other topic" from before, would you?" He kept his eyes focused away from his companion to hide the gleam in his eyes. "I was... curious. That kind of thing is uncommon."

"I didn't mean to get so many bug types, they just sort of ended up..." She shook her head, laughing softly. "Well, anyway, I'm sure as I find more Pokemon I'll be able to even out my team a bit. I'd really like to have a dragon type on my team someday." Having recently met a dragon Pokemon, she was really eager to catch one. It was a far off dream, but still a dream. The Yanma was kind of like a dragon himself, anyway.
However, Erin paused when Elliot brought up the subject of her gender again. He was being pretty delicate of it, so that it didn't strike up any worries in the girl's heart. ".. Yeah," she smiled warmly: a reflection of his chesire grin in a slightly more contained fashion. "We can talk about it, I guess. If you're curious or something." She really didn't think he was going to pick on her-- he was just the kind of guy who found humor in a lot of things. Not mean spirited at all.
Her eyes wandered back to Lugh though, as his speed broke maximum levels. The buzzing sound was at a high enough pitch to shatter windows, but thankfully there were no windows down underground. "A bit more gentle, Lugh. We want to get as many shards as possible, but don't bring the cave down on us." The bright red bug looked back at her and held up a claw, kind of like a thumbs up, before getting back to work at his fastest speed.

He let out a breath that he hadn't been aware he'd been holding. He'd been a bit worried that the girl would become withdrawn or worse yet, get offended, if he tried to bring that topic up again, but when he glanced back she was smiling pleasant as could be at. He waited for a moment, but when she didn't continue he pressed on. "Ah, well," he said, looking away again and giving a casual shrug. "Talk about it. You're trans, right?" He knew a thing or two about transsexuals himself, but he was curious how the girl would describe it.

"Yes, that is what they call it." She always felt that was a weird thing, that she had to be identified differently from a cis person, instead of simply being a girl. She supposed it was just how the world worked, always had to have labels.
"It's not much different from being a normal person, that's why it's kind of hard to talk about," she admitted. "It's harder, though. Every day I have to fight to prove and show how I feel inside, I guess. Some days are better than others." She smiled despite this-- today, after all, was looking to be a better day than most. She was starting to think she had made a friend... okay, it had only been a couple of minutes, but regardless... He was nice. She hoped he would stay her friend.
She was trying to come up with a way to explain it. "It's like... when you try to write with the hand you don't normally use. It feels weird and wrong and the words are all messy. Except, I can't use my dominate hand, because I was born wrong handed." She hoped that made since, her eyes flickering between the older man and her Lugh, who was just working so hard. She suddenly realized that with all her talking, a bunch of shards were now laying around. Elliot's Meowth couldn't collect them all by herself, so she quickly got to work picking them up.

Elliot listened patiently to Erin's description, noticing as she talked that the shards were starting to pile up. His Meowth had settled besides the bag they were using for collection and was quietly admiring the jewels, eyes wide and innocently joyful. He couldn't rightly get cross with her for taking a break from the favor she was doing him, so he kneeled down and started picking up his Pokemon's slack as Erin finished.
"Heh, I approve," he said, smiling mischievously. "Creative and none of that "stuck in the wrong body" crap that you hear all the time." He huffed a little. "I'm not stuck in any body, thank you. It just has a kind of feminine voice and some of the parts are mixed up. Nothing some testosterone and a little SRS can't fix, right?" His Meowth gave a delighted mew as he dumped a small pile of shards into the bag. "I'd personally just hand someone a pamphlet though. It's not like they'd really understand anyway. They might be polite or open-minded enough to accept that you're not just cross-dressing because it's some kind of weird kink or at least not laugh at you, but they can't really understand." He gave a small shake of his head and laughed. "People really take gender identity for granted, eh?"
He stood and absently watched the Yanma flit about. "So," he said suddenly, whipping out his very smuggest grin. "Do you want to train together later? We're probably around the same level and I bet we could both use the practice."

She didn't say much-- mostly because he didn't take a breath, practically-- but she did giggle at the pamphlet jab. Maybe she could make one up. One that fit her, specifically. Would that be weird? He was probably just joking anyway, so the young girl just laughed along and let him yak on until he changed the subject, once again, rather suddenly.
"A battle would be great! My starter hasn't gotten much practice since I got him, unless you consider hunting for eggs 'practice'." She sighed, shaking her head slightly. The Easter Egg hunt was fun, but it took up just so much time. She could have beaten the first gym by now, and she knew it... too much horsing around. "You should see about getting a whole team together, so we can have a huge battle and get lots of experience for all of our Pokémon. We'll try and match their levels so they get the most out of it, of course."
Lugh buzzed something, but the girl didn't understand it. She just kept picking up shards as he hummed along, not seeming to mind the fact she couldn't answer. It bothered Erin, though. She had met trainers who knew just what their Pokémon was saying... The Yanma suddenly switched to shadow ball, the dark mass slipping through a crack and breaking it open a bit wider, from the inside. "Someday, I hope I can figure out what they're saying, you know?" She wondered aloud, frowning lightly. She really wasn't normally this chatty, but his personality seemed to perfectly balance out Erin's.

Elliot had been just a bit eager to see Erin's expression when the true nature of the situation dawned on her, but when she simply moved on to answer his question without so much as a pause he realized that his entire meaning had flown right over her head. That was... terribly disappointing, actually. "Sure," he said, smile fading a bit. His intention had been to force a new subject just in time for understanding to dawn on her, but now it was too late to go back. "I think I want to focus on a main four for now for the gym, so let's set that to our target number. I can't really train my Feebas yet anyway so it'd be just be and my Meowth."
He paused in his work to give the shards they had gathered so far an appraising look, trying to size up how many they had collected. Him and his Miesha had sped things up considerably by means of detection and collection, but the other trainer's Yanma had been the real star. Without the Bug type, Elliot wouldn't have had any shards to collect. With that in mind, would an even split be fair to the other trainer? He almost suggested otherwise, but stopped himself. There was no reason to give himself the short end of the stick so soon. He'd wait and see what the other trainer said when they were done. That being said... "You should tell your Yanma to stop soon. I think Miesha is done and I think there are enough loose shards here to fill the rest of the bag."

Maybe she would reflect on it later and figure it out. Maybe she wouldn't. "Alright, four works for me." She smiled brightly, already having a team in mind for her training. After all, she had to have some kind of plan. She had some TMs that she desperately wanted to use, but she hadn't quite smoothed out her plans.
Yanma finsihed breaking out the crack he made with another Ancient Power, scattering a huge lot of shards around the ground. "Alright, enough. We have to gather them up now," she told Lugh, following Elliot's word of advice. She hadn't gotten as dirty as she thought she would, inspecting the faint dirt stains on her jeans and shoes. Maybe because she wasn't doing as much of the work as she thought.
Their bag was probably way too full now, but that was alright. Soon they could take a break and count up all of their shards. She smiled warmly as she gathered them all up. She said nothing about splitting up the shards, though, because she assumed it was generally appropriate to split them up evenly. "Maybe we can have a contest battle after our training, just to make sure I'm really ready for the contest." She tried not to remember how poorly she had done with the Seismitoad... hopefully she had gotten better from last time.

Noticing that the other trainer was giving herself a once-over, Elliot stopped to examine himself as well. The damage was nothing too drastic, fortunately. Some airborne dirt, courtesy of the Yanma's violent digging, had settled on his clothes, but he had remained out of the way of the worst of it. Miesha, he noted with a frown, was far worse off. Having been running to and fro directly beneath the blast zones, she was sporting a coat that was several degrees darker than when they had entered. He didn't envy the thought of having to bathe her afterwards.
"Come on, girl," he said softly, giving the still-resting cat a gentle nudge with his shoe. "No, ah!" He stopped and sighed as she scampered off into the settling dust once more, snapping up a few shards in her mouth. There went his plans of keeping her from collecting any more filth. At least he could take solace in the fact that they were just about finished.
"That sounds fine," he said, gathering up the last of the shards. "There are definitely some things I'd like to try out with a partner." He'd certainly planned on practicing a few routines, but to pit himself against another rookie would be a far better method of testing his skills than if his Pokemon were merely assaulting a wall.
"I'm going to go outside and dust my Meowth off a bit," he said once the job was done, wanting a bit more light for the task ahead than was offered by his flashlight. "We can divide the shards after we've taken a break."

She was relieved to hear that he agreed, and it was good that they had similar but opposite goals. One could focus on battling and the other on contests, and they could give each other tips... It would be pretty cool, she thought. Hardly noticing how dark the kitten was, she picked up the last of the few shards with her dragonfly.
She was a little bit startled, as a result, when he said he was going to dust off his Meowth. She then broke into a giggle fit as she saw that the poor white coat had turned nearly solid brown in all the dirt. "I'm sorry," she chuckled, shaking her head. "Yeah, you go clean her off." She stood up to go join him, but her Yanma flopped on the ground suddenly and buzzed with complaints.
Turning, she looked back at him and realized he was really exaughsted. His poor wings flapped slowly and tiredly, completely worn out from the effort. "Um, I'll catch up in a minute. Poor guy is tired out of his wits." She let a grin slip on to her face as she looked back at Elliot, before kneeling down to the Yanma and looking him over. She ran her hand over his head and picked him up as he whined and whirred, spent. As the other trainer left, she gave her poor bug a chance to catch his breath, looking through her backpack for something to bring his energy back up.
