{desc=Astrid} "Every journey starts with a single step" Astrid mused, but she had already taken many steps in order to be able to take this step. In essence the saying wasn't entirely true, after all, there were many things to be done before one were ready to take the first step. Astrid had made sure to prepare well for this journey. It was unlikely that she would encounter anything exceedingly dangerous at this the first route, but one could never be too careful. As such Astrid had stopped by a place called the ranger station earlier. She had been told at the local Poké-center, that said station was handing out free kits with basic items, and that one could also gain a random pokémon there if one wanted to. Astrid had declined the latter, she would not risk it. Her future line of work was one shrouded in danger, it would be unwise to leave who your partner were up to luck. No, Astrid preferred to judge the pokémon she met herself. That way she could more easily gauge whether or not they could be up to the task later on. She had however, accepted the starter kit. It proved to consist of five pokéballs, three potions, an oran, leppa and pecha berry and an encyclopedic device called a pokédex Astrid was sure would come in handy. The strange person manning the place had furthermore quizzed her. She had been asked to guess a pokémon from a part of a picture of it, and when she had gotten the question correct, she had been handed a Quick ball and a Lum berry as reward. Quite pleased with herself, the Paladin-to-be had set out towards the first route on the map she had bought prior to getting to this region. This route was most likely not going to be particularly hazardous or dangerous to get through, but Astrid didn't mind, she would be able to keep a proper pace and perhaps scout for wild Pokémon to either capture or train against. It was for the very same reason she had decided to let Xiphos walk beside her instead of keeping him in his pokéball. If the route was safe she preferred the company, and if it wasn't she could quickly recall the Sharp blade pokémon. "May our journey be a success" Astrid murmured to herself, as she began her walk down the route, the sounds of her heavy armour alerting anything that listened that she was approaching . ::pawniard:: lvl: 4

Just a weed that seemed to have dug itself in the path was now in the trainer's way. Yes, the armor was a dead give away someone was approaching, but this plant pokemon knew how to wait at just the right moment to spot a scare. Yes, this male oddish was very much a trickster and most likely just a pest than a useful pokemon. Always causing trouble for trainers wandering down the path as he dug himself further into the ground keeping up the appearance. If a person looked close enough they'd notice the purple edge of the oddish since he hadn't dug himself completely into the dirt. It was hard to do all that work by a single pokemon, and it seemed this was his usual jack-in-the-box spot since he did like to wait for victims. Even passing pokemon got a good scare, and they usually would try to destroy him with their attacks. Instead he'd just run away and snicker the entire time. So, now he was in the dirt, and then when the trainer's foot stepped by him he made the most annoying squeak ever. Well, he jumped up right in front of her foot landing on the ground, and then turned his head upwards towards the trainer making a very scary face. Making biting motions with it's jaw and then it landed backwards, looking up still just wanting to see the reaction on the trainer's face.

Astrid had very much been caught up in her thoughts of just how wonderfully prepared she was for whatever laid ahead, and as such she had no idea what monstrosities were underfoot. The heavy, red greaves clanked rhythmically as she slowly strode down the road, making it all to easy for said monstrosity to pinpoint exactly when to scare her. Even her trusty partner were too absorbed in the wonderful new surroundings, intriguing smells and peculiar almost inaudible sounds to notice the strange weed that waited ahead. That was until it squeaked and jumped up from directly below them, making a weird face. Astrid was instantly taken aback, in fact she was so surprised that a loud "Oh my!" escaped her as she stepped back wards to avoid the thing. Xiphos was surprised as well, but unlike astrid his immediate reaction was one of violence as he thrust his honed arm forward in order to strike whatever was in front of him. "Am I under siege!?" Astrid managed to think before she saw that it was naught but a tiny oddish. The weed pokemon, she knew, was of the grass and poison type, which meant it was not very likely to be able to do much damage to her partner. It also had short, stubby legs which meant it would be somewhat easy to trip, and it had no arms to hinder such maneuvers. "Perhaps it would be best to see this opportunity to practice acting once surprised." She thought, and saw that her pokémon was already acting on the very idea. The pawniard had not had a good look at exactly what he was attacking, but for him it mattered little. It had a body it seemed, and he aimed his Scratch attack towards it. Oh well, to each their own as the oddish started to wonder what it could do in this situation and not much could be done besides this! Suddenly as the scratch hit the oddish, a sweet aroma filled the air leaving it rather delightful, but it wasn't just the effect of what would happen next. The oddish was clever and he wasn't going to let this injustice go on any longer as he was just brutalized by a monstrous attack. How DARe you attack me, but I can do that too, he said in pokespeak to the other Pokémon. Making a scratching imitation with it's leaves, but it was very sad trying to flail those floppy leaves fowards to make any effort in actually making it look like a scratching move. Finally the oddish then did what it wanted to as sweet scent had been unleashed and then follwed quickly by an absorb. Astrid recognized the sweet scent as soon as it filled the air. She had never actually experienced a sweet scent attack before, but she knew exactly what to expect. It wasn't that the other students at the academy hadn't had pokémon with access to the move, no, but none of them had been stupid enough to risk activating Xiphos' Defiant ability, and this oddish would soon learn why doing exactly that was a bad idea. Xiphos Noticed the sweet scent as well, though he was much more attracted to it than Astrid had been. The sweet sticky flavour filled whatever he used to smell things and as he tried to follow the lovely Scent, he in turn became less vary of moves. For a little while the Sharp Blade pokémon was dazed by the sweetness, then his ability kicked in and a great feeling of defiance filled him. Sure he was still attracted to the lovely scent, but he was angry that he had managed to be tricked by such a low move, and his anger filled him with more power. The oddish asked how he dared attack it, how dared it use such mind-affecting moves on him! it was unthinkable that someone like him had fallen for something like that. Lowly weed! Thrust yourself against my blades and feel death! he shouted, also in pokéspeak. The absorb attack hit him, but was all together not very effective, his armoured body did well and protected him from most of the harm. Astrid had since regained her balance and with it alot of confidence. This pokémon was wild and had little in ways of tactics. It seemingly attacked with whatever it knew, but it was fine, for each time it lowered Xiphos' evasiveness, his attack would rise twofold. Xiphos only knew Scratch, but against this opponent, and especially now that his attack had been increased, Scratch would be sufficient by far. "My apologies, we shan't prolong your suffering dearest Oddish" She said, before she turned to Xiphos and requested another scratch attack. Xiphos was soon to follow up, his anger was still boiling, and as he lunged after the tiny pokemon, he introduced himself: " Greetings, I'm Xiphos, the weed whacker!" ::pawniard::

[STYLE=border-bottom: 5px solid #FFC7FF;] [/style] Well the oddish wasn't really too riled up to participate in this battle, and might just run away soon if they weren't careful. After all, this oddish was faster than he looked, and planned on using a get away strategy when needed to. That is why he was a prankster, pretending to battle people and then running away when he was almost going to end up like many other pokemon. Transferring to a pokeball that was like a little round hell to him, but none-the-less here he was fighting a losing battle in general against a pokemon far superior to him. Even more surprising was that said pokemon was still attacking him without even getting to know him, but the oddish no longer cared. Instead as the scratch hit him again, another absorb was let out to steal more health from the steel looking pokemon, but he wondered if this attack was even effective at all. Probably not every effective, but still enough to gain at least 'some' health back. Well, whatever did him justice and he knew he wouldn't be winning any battles soon with how this one was going. Let me make you pay for attacking me first without getting to know someone! he accused the two of them! I mean how rude just attacking out of nowhere. As for you being a weedwhacker you look more like a rake that's ready to just be rusted out, and then tossed in the trash! he retorted in defense, rather angry at them. ::oddish:: Level 6 | Male Clorophyll Absorb || Sweet Scent Prankster - Likes to scare people - Mimics others Health is Green! Astrid had little idea what the smaller Pokémon said, she did not understand pokéspeak, but she could see it seemed angry, which was nothing out of the ordinary, it was in a battle after all. She became thoughtful for a moment. Not because she was wondering how to proceed, it wasn't hard when you only knew one move. Instead Astrid wondered exactly how effective the absorb attacks would be against her partner. Sure his armour did a good job of protecting him from damage, he would resist the attacks she knew, but she also knew that special defense was far from being his forte. She made a mental note to try and get him a TM of some sort, perhaps Aerial ace, it would be a great move for him to deal with these kind of things. Xiphos on the other hand understood pokéspeak very well, but he was too engaged in the battle to tell the Oddish that Astrid would most likely nurse it back to health after she had him beat it. This was only a practice battle he was sure, Astrid wouldn't want a pokémon like this oddish, it seemed totally weird and unreliable. The oddish attacked him once again, but this time it left out the sweet scent, something Xiphos was a bit disappointed in, after all, it had been explained to him how his ability worked, and he would like very much to smash this oddish fast and get it over with. Silence insolent knave! To your knees! He roared as he Scratched the oddish, this time going for a low blow against the small feet it possessed. That's when the scratch head it's huge head, and then it finally lashed out with absorb in return, although it wasnt' very effective in general. Xiphos was rather surprised when the tiny pokemon suddenly ran into his attack, rather than try to avoid it. What kind of folly was this!? Did it expect his blades, the hardened steel he used to cut things, to be a weak point? Xiphos noted how the pokémon absorbed health from him once again. It was annoying, but luckily he could still resist it pretty well, so he wasn't in immediate danger, and even if he was to be weakened, Astrid was there to heal him, no, this battle was his. Then the enemy started repeating what he was saying. Xiphos was once again confused as to what this was supposed to accomplish, after all it wasn't as if the oddish could actually mirror his moves. Perchance it was a ploy to pester him into perplexion? if such it was a weak idea, Xiphos had the will of a paladin's partner, such childish tricks would not work on him, it simply wouldn't do. A mirror are you? Very well, try to keep up! he laughed and spun around to reach the backside of the opponent, and as he did he received the order to strike once again. Astrid had been watching as it was, but she had no idea what plans Xiphos was cooking up, or why, but the reckless behaviour of the oddish was simply weird. Astrid was sure that more was going on than she knew of, and she had decided to let Xiphos handle most of it, he would have a better understanding of what happened than she. "Xiphos!" she began, clearly ready to give orders, "I trust your judgment."While this was not specifically an order, it was a command, and it meant Xiphos was to do as he thought best. Astrid would only interfere with advice and if otherwise necessary. ::pawniard::

Astrid stood back and watched the little pokémon before her. It certainly seemed dedicated to the fight, that much was certain, a shame it was a fight it wouldn't win. For a moment it reminded her of herself when she was younger. She remembered, perhaps a little bitter, how she too had been too reckless and how she had been scolded for going into fights she couldn't possibly win, rather than surrender with honour. There was one more thing on her mind though. This pokemon certainly wasn't particularly strong it seemed, but she knew that Oddish learned a handful of moves that could be quite effective at quickly neutralizing an opponent. Stun spore and Sleep powder would both be tools she'd readily welcome, but Oddish weren't the only pokémon that learned such moves, and quite frankly, this little one seemed all to immature to take on. She could of course train it into a more mature and focused fighter, but her gut told her, that she should rather leave this pokémon to live it's life wild and free. Once she fought it at least. Xiphos was unaware of his partner's thoughts, though he had little doubt that she would not capture this pokémon, at was all too annoying. His attacks seemed to be getting to the Weed, at least he thought it looked like they did, and for that he was glad. While he might resist all of it's moves and even grow stronger from some, he could feel that the continuous barrage of absorbs were beginning to affect him as well. He could still go on, no question of that, and he was confident in his ability to win, but he would not do so completely unharmed. Briefly the Pawniard considered simply staying quiet so that the tiny pokémon couldn't mimic him, but instead he figured he could try to have some fun back. All amazing abras alter all alternately! he quipped as he moved to strike the oddish with another boosted Scratch. ::pawniard::

Though it was hidden, Xiphos smiled a sly smile. The Oddish had seemingly stopped mimicking him as soon as he had made it harder for it to do, what a simpleton. It didn't seem to be particularly bright if it couldn't even mimic his wordspam... or perhaps it wasn't particularly dedicated. Whatever the case it was not worthy of joining Astrid's team, at least not in his opinion. The opponent denied him escape, but Xiphos knew he wasn't the one who should be running, in fact, the Oddish had just raised his attack further. It pissed him off that it would dare use it's delicious scent again to try and lure him in, he was going to give it the scratching of it's life! Taking the absorb that had also been thrown at him, Xiphos went straight for the opponent, his blades almost glowing in the light as he once again tried to cut it, this time with double the force from before. Astrid too had seen the sweet scent attack coming, and knew that the Oddish had just doomed itself further by lowering a stat Xiphos wasn't even using. His attack stat should be through the roof by now, in fact, just one more sweet scent from the oddish and his attack would be as high as it could be boosted by his ability, she didn't think this would last much longer. I should get ready to remedy whatever damage he does once this little one goes cold... I can probably produce something natural from the environment. Some safe leaves held together by straws shouldn't be too unnatural and hopefully it won't hinder the oddish any. Astrid smiled as she saw the end of the battle. The oddish fell and Xiphos was now the Victor. She went to her pokemon and patted him on the shoulder. She had actually wanted to hug him, but she always refrained from doing so while armoured, her armour would get scratched and his blades dulled, instead she preferred to hug him when in normal clothing, though this meant she would have to be extra careful not to get cut. Xiphos looked up at her, and while Pawniards could be hard to read, she could see that he was pleased. "You did good Xiphos" She said, "Let's fix this little one, and head back to town, we could both need some rest."
Kneeling Astrid picked up the Oddish, being careful not to harm it. She asked Xiphos to cut some materials, and before long he returned with some sizable leaves and some fresh straw. Picking up the natural items, Astrid quickly assembled a makeshift bandage and tied it to the places where the oddish had been cut. Afterward she found a good spot, a small opening between bushes, where she dug a small hole, and lowered the oddish into. It would most likely lose the bandages quickly, but having planted it, Astrid knew it would quickly regain it's strenght as it absorbed nutrients from the ground, and if it wasn't sufficient, the light would heal it once the moon rose. The young knight looked at her pokemon and smiled. It was time to get back to the city.
((Astrid goes to the Pokécenter and to the pound and gets her Cubchoo))
It afternoon when Astrid returned. Her trip to the city had taken a little longer than expected, but the girl was beaming as she made her way down the road. At her side was her partner, Fresh from the pokécenter, but seemingly concerned by the blue and white bundle she carried in her arms. The Cubchoo had not let go of her since they left tho pound, and Astrid was certain it was horrified she would abandon it at this route. She had no intention of doing so however, in fact she was certain she could temper the bond between herself and the cub, and perhaps even restore some confidence to it, if she was given enough time.
Xiphos was less pleased than his partner. It was obvious that she had fallen for the cute looks of the cub, and that her romantic heart was filling her with dreams of restoring this pokémon. Xiphos hoped she was right, but he wasn't certain. The Cub had scarcely spoken, but when it did it sounded most like desperate pleas not to be left again, this pokémon was scarred. The Pawniard made a mental sigh, this was to be his first partner, but he was certain it would not be the first he befriended. He would try, Astrid would want it, but he knew it would take time before the Cub opened up to anyone, Human or Pokémon.
"We should be on the lookout, wild pokémon will be lurking, and perhaps we will be less lucky with type advantage this time" Astrid said to no one in particular, though Xiphos was pretty certain it was meant for him mostly. He looked out over the area, they had passed the bushes where the Oddish would be recovering, so far so good he figured. Now the only question was, what was going to happen next?
((OOC: I hope I am allowed to bring in Cubchoo this way? it seemed fitting with the timeline))

Astrid had been deep in thought of wondrous friendships when she was suddenly approached by the trio. At first the Masquerain's pattern gave her a small scare, it had seemed a large, dangerous monster had been right in front of her, but she quickly calmed down and observed the three bug types in front of her. The first was a Masquerain, a flying bug pokemon with a pattern made to intimidate others. Astrid glanced at Xiphos, and sure enough, the intimidation had reacted his Defiant ability, he looked tense. The second was a Yanma, the clear wing pokémon, and another bug flying. Yanmas had amazing speed she knew, and of the trio it was the only one still capable of evolution. Lastly there was a Beautifly, a pretty pokémon and once again a flying bug. They seemed friendly, and seemingly buzzed something at her. Astrid cursed herself. She had not been reading the books on poké-speak she had been given at graduation, and now she regretted it dearly. She turned to Xiphos in the hopes that he would be able to somehow give her an idea about what was happening.
Just as Astrid had thought her partner had tensed up, but it had more to do with the fact that he was now facing three pokémon, two of which were fully grown too. He did relax a little when he heard the Masquerain speak. A concert? It would certainly be a treat compared to the rude oddish he had fought earlier. He looked to Astrid to gain her approval, but realized that she didn't understand poké-speak yet. Xiphos frowned a little, he was certain she could learn it... Instead she looked at him for translation, and he figured he could at least try to make her understand. The Sharp pokemon put a hand to where his ear would be if he was a human, and his trainer seemed first a little perplexed, but then it dawned on her what he meant and she said: "We shall listen? Very well, but ask them if they're up for a practice fight in return?". Xiphos nodded and turned to the female trio: We concur, though we ask that in return you have a practice match with us afterward?. he looked for the trio, hoping they would agree, they looked like they would sing well.

The Pawniard nodded to his master, these bugs seemed quite adept at singing, and it was in no way unpleasant to listen to. His trainer sat down on the grass to enjoy the singing, and he knew that while she knew not the words, the would still enjoy the melody. Xiphos sat down next to her, once again noticing the Cubchoo. It seemed to have calmed down somewhat at the singing, but it was by no means relaxed. He felt sorry for the little guy. To be broken like that would have to be horrendous, but for now he would let the femmes sing for them, a battle awaited afterward.
At least the pawniard thought he was to relax, but then suddenly he was asked to join the femmes in their song? Xiphos was perplexed. He had never sung before. Maybe a small humming every now and then when the mood struck him, but never an actual song, no it ad never happened. He looked at the Yanma and started to speak: "I'm afraid I must decl...." then he stopped himself and glanced at the tiny cub besides him. He rose to his feet and walked to the Yanma, now speaking with a hushed voice: "You see the little one? The one my trainer is cradling like a child?" He paused to make sure she knew who he was talking about before continuing. "She just adopted him... his former trainer left him, and now he is terrified of being left once again... I don't suppose you girls know a song to cheer him up?" He looked expectantly at the Yanma, before he added in a mumble "I should even participate, though i have never sung before..."

::yanma:: ::masquerain:: ::beautifly:: pokemon encounter ! the beautifly looked at the cubchoo cheerfully. < indeed we caaaaan~ > she spoke, before flying, with her friends to hover in front of the adorable pokemon. they lifted their voices and swayed before the arctic pokemon, singing and dancing and laughing and playing. < don't worry, darling! we'll make you feel all better. > the yanma sang, with the masquerain coming up behind. < dry those tears, muffle those whines. we're all here, to make you shiiiiine! > she laughed again, brushing against the cute pokemon.
the beautifly took up the end, singing in deeper tones that melted with the harmonious sounds of the other two. they all found it unbelievably enjoyable to sing, and were thrilled when the pawniard said he would. or said he might. they hadn't caught that entirely.
