Sam was in one of his 'let's-give-newbies-good-stuff' moods again and gave the Ace members a mission to surprise the new trainers with a Pokémon from their PC. Noah had no choice, but to do it since it was the boss' orders. He had a few Pokémon he didn't need so he didn't mind giving them away, but he didn't understand something. Wasn't Christmas the day when people gave gifts to eachother? Then why were they doing this in November? He didn't know how Sam's mind worked, but it must have been malfunctioning lately.
Accompanied by his Nidoking, Scorpio, Noah searched through Route One for a trainer who wasn't busy battling wild Pokémon. After half an hour of searching without success, he found a girl with a Swinub who just captured an Ekans. "Hm, I think I have my target." Smiling sinisterly, the tall boy sneaked behind the girl silently and tried to greet her by scaring the daylights out of her. "BOO!" He leaned close the girl's head and shouted into her ears, using the classical 'get-behind-her-and-freak-her-out-while-she's-not-paying-attention' technique. It worked most of the time.

Elani smiled brightly down at Mystral as she reached for the Pokeball and picked it up. "This will be a good addition to our team, Mystral. At least until we find a Pokémon center so that we can transfer it. I suppose we could keep it." She looked skeptically at the Pokeball, and then shrugged with a smile.
>Not cute!< Mystral protested.
Elani bit down on her lower lip. "Yes, I know. Maybe she'll change until then..."
"BOO!"
Elani's violet eyes grew huge in her elfin face and she hugged the Ekans' pokeball to her chest tightly as she seemed to shrink into herself, the loud and unexpected roar causing her to immediately revert back to the instincts she'd developed in her foster home of shrinking in fear of loud noises.
She flinched and braced herself to be hit twice...once for whatever she'd done to cause the loud shout and once for flinching...with her eyes closed and the Pokeball still clutched protectively to her chest.

Well, shit. Noah's prank freaked out the poor girl so badly she was trembling in fear. "Shit, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you. It was just a prank! I swear!" He didn't know what made the other trainer react so badly to his loud shout, but he felt extremely guilty about it. He shouldn't have done something like that. What was he thinking?
"Hey, um, I'm Noah. Nice to meet you." he said, trying to start a conversation with the terrified girl. "I am a member of Ace Academy and I am here to give you a gift." Mentioning the gift should be enough to calm her down, right? Well, Noah hoped it would be.
Scorpio just stood behind Noah, shaking his head at the sight of his trainer's nervous behaviour. He really messed up this time, didn't he?

"I...I...I..." Elani stammered. Gifts weren't something she was familiar with. Certainly Mystral had been a gift, but it was expected that she would be given a starter, wasn't it? And hadn't she just caught this Ekans to give to the trainer who had given her Romeo, so that she wouldn't be indebted? Gifts weren't something her foster family had given her any experience with. He seemed to expect an answer outside of her stammering, though, so she supposed she'd have to try. She swallowed hard. "I...I.." >Elani...< Mystral prompted gently, coming up close to her ankles as the little elfin girl almost huddled around the Pokeball she'd just filled with Snake. Elani swallowed and forced herself to take a deep breath. It worked. Her heartrate slowed just a little. Just enough. "I'm Elani," she said carefully. "I...It's okay. Loud voices just...um...I'm sorry. I overreacted...I think..." her words were still halting, and her voice was quiet and timid as a mouse, but she was speaking full words now, which was a step up from the stammering. Mystral grunted and looked past the trainer to Scorpio. Her glance seemed to catch Elani's eye and the huge violet orbs moved to the poison type. Her trembling shoulders relaxed, just slightly. "Oh...you're a very lovely boy aren't you?" She murmured in soft wonder.

"Hey, don't apologize! It was my fault for scaring you." Noah didn't think his prank would trigger such a reaction from the girl. He only meant it as a joke, but he messed up very badly. He felt guilty for scaring her now.
"Oh, about the gift. I want to give you a pokemon that could help you on your journey. Umm, are you afraid of spiders?" He wanted to give the female trainer his Ariados, but he had to make sure she didn't have arachnophobia or a fear of bugs.
Scorpio blushed as he was complimented by Elani and he started scratching his head in his embarrassment as he looked to the side. <T-thanks for the compliment.> He staggered and hid behind Noah. He might have been able to hide successfully if he wasn't at least twice as wide as the boy.

"Spiders?" Elani tilted her head. She was still looking at Scorpio, but that seemed to calm her...talking to him instead of directly to Noah. "N-no. I'm not afraid of any Pokémon..." her voice grew very quite. "They're not the scary ones..." She cleared her throat and managed a polite smile at Noah. "Y-you're not going to hit me f-for flinching away?" This was new. Although she'd known logically that fists didn't fly every time someone flinched...and that something was wrong...she'd assumed that the something wrong was with her...not her foster mother. It was curious to Elani why he was telling her it was his fault instead of hers. That...had literally never happened to her that she could remember.

Noah was surprised, no, shocked by the girl's words. Why would he hit her for flinching?! She must have been abused by her parents when she was little if she thought hurting for such a ridiculous reason was normal. "What are you talking about? I'd never hit you for just being surprised from my prank. I think YOU should hit me for scaring you! You're angry, right?"
Scorpio furrowed his brows at Elani too, confused by her words. Despite his threatening appearance and the bandages all around his body, Noah would never hurt anyone or start a fight. He was pretty docile and peaceful even when he was being provoked or insulted.

Elani's eyes went a little wider and she shook her head, holding the snake's Pokeball close. "No," she said softly. "I'm not mad. I thought you were angry with me. My...um..." She hesitated, and then forced herself to continue speaking. "My foster mother was...she...um..." She looked down and then at Scorpio. "I'm clumsy...and stupid...and I don't understand things quickly enough..." "I do a lot of bad things..." Although she had never been told what she did, per se, she knew it had to be true...why would she be so hated otherwise?
