{desc=..searching far and wide..}Barely had the girl taken two steps out the lab door before releasing the newly acquired Riolu, anxious to meet her new friend. The young Pokemon rubbed its eyes, crimson in color as it scanned its surroundings; it seemed that it was almost just as new to the world of Cheyenne as Aurora herself! Immediately she knelt down, introducing herself like she would to any other person she was meeting for the first time. The Riolu had let out a tiny howl in response, stepping closer to its new trainer with a smiling face. The thought that the pair would make a truly great team lingered in the forefront of Aurora's mind as she picked her partner up, giving it a light and loving squeeze before continuing down the nearest route.
By now it was around midday, and the two had walked quite a ways away from the lab. What a start! She still couldn't get over the fact she'd run into the very champion of Sinnoh. If that wasn't a good omen for her journey at hand, then she didn't know what was. Now the girl sat slumped against a large tree, sketchpad in one arm and pencil in the other. Across the crisp off-white paper was a half sketched realistic portrayal of the sleeping Riolu which lay spread out over her ankles. She'd since nicknamed the creature Rin because, well, it had a nice ring to it didn't it? Rin the Riolu. Official partner of Aurora Belle Carlson, soon-to-be famed explorer and champion of Cheyenne. A small, content sigh escaped the girl's lips as she continued her drawing; they were taking a short break for now, but she'd be back en route as soon as Rin woke up.

Ahead of Aurora on the path something small could be seen darting around weaving in and out of bushes. It was moving so fast that it almost couldn’t be told what it was. However on closer inspection one could see it was a smaller than average Caterpie that was looking around for something on the ground. It slowed down a bit as it saw the person sitting down against a tree before looking back saying aloud <Damn it! Where the hell is that thing? I never misplace it!> If Aurora looked carefully she could see that this Caterpie in particular had eyes with smaller pupils than normal giving a more fierce expression than the normal docile bugs of it’s kind. Whether she chose to engage it that was something she may or may not regret. It wasn’t long before some sort of rustling caught the trainer’s attention. Pausing in her artistic activity, she perked up in the direction of the sound. Something— something was definitely crawling around down the path. But what? Aurora leaned towards the noise ever so closer, squinting her blue eyes to get a better look. Finally the thing slowed down enough in its unusually fast movements for her to pinpoint its identity. Could it be…
Immediately she pushed the sketchpad to the side in favor of rummaging through her brown-colored bag, dumping about just every item out of the thing to find what she was looking for. Finally grasping the Pokedex, she pointed it in the direction of the small green caterpillar, pressing random buttons as she wasn’t quite sure how to work this confounded device. “Darn it all, why didn’t this thing come with a manual…” she whispered to herself, slight frustration growing on her face. She must have pushed all the right things because sure enough, the electronic voice suddenly sounded out as an image of the creature’s species became reflected across the screen. “Caterpie, the Worm Pokémon. Caterpie uses the suction cups on its feet to climb trees and feed on its favorite leaves.”
So she was right, Caterpie after all. So tiny for its species! Fast, too. They weren’t too many in Sinnoh, but she knew they were pretty common in most regions. While she couldn’t understand what the Pokemon was saying directly, it was clear that it was in some state of disarray. But what could possibly have that cutie so upset? Furrowing her brow, she gently moved the sleeping Rin from off her ankles as not to disturb him and began crawling towards the distressed Caterpie. Surely approaching in such an unintimidating way won’t make it feel threatened, right? “What’s the matter, little guy? Lookin’ for somethin’?” She sat on her knees with her hands resting in her lap, watching the bug type with a curious yet somewhat concerned gaze.

The Caterpie was continuing to look for something when Aurora approached him. He turned slowly to look up at the large human with his animistic eyes and spoke quickly saying <Don't patronize me human. I lost something precious to me. I'll do anything to get it back.> He then turned back to looking before he said <I really don't need a human's help for this. They' don't have good eyes.> he said with a sour attitude as he peeled back a bush to check out the interior. So it was looking for something! Aurora could understand that much from the way the creature continued to keep rummaging around. Unfortunately for the Caterpie, however, his sharp-tongued prejudice went unheard by her incompatible ears. “Lose something, didja? Well!” she spoke with enthusiasm as she pushed up onto her feet, “If that’s the case, then I’d be happy to help you find it!” As far as this trainer knew, she was doing the Pokémon a friendly favor- though her good Samaritan actions might not be as welcome as she believed. Sure she could sense the grumpy attitude in his behavior, but that was only because he was upset about his lost item, definitely. It was a good thing she came along.
It was then that the lack of warmth under the Riolu’s body from Aurora’s absence awoke the Pokemon, who slowly stirred into a sitting position. He began to almost frantically look around this still unfamiliar area before relief washed over his small form at the sight of his trainer standing a bit away. He wouldn’t know what to do if he was left all alone! Quickly he ran to her side, clinging to her leg and peering warily at the bug Pokémon. “Oh,” the girl started, kneeling down at the sudden tug and giving her Pokémon a quick pat on the head. “Good timing, buddy! This here fella needs help with finding something, and that’s where we come in.” Three times the pair of eyes is always better than one, after all, regardless of what the Caterpie thinks. The blue creature gave a tentative nod at his trainer’s words, unsure of the aggressive caterpillar but trusting in Aurora. <What are you looking for..?> Rin spoke up, voice lit with curiosity more than anything else. The Caterpie simply stared at Aurora. Was she deaf or something? He couldn't understand why if she could understand him that she didn't realize he liked working alone unless someone proved to be stronger than him. Then he would follow them, figure their motives out, and take them down. He smirked to himself as the Riolu came over. Now they were talking business! He looked as the Riolu's attraction showed and thought to himself. <Fine. It's a headband.> he said after a minute of silence. <Only if after I get to fight this Riolu.> he said as he faced forward <There's only one place I haven't checked yet.> he said as he began to scurry off the path into the more densely wooded area. Aurora blinked back at the Caterpie with a smiling face, clearly oblivious to its true aggressive nature. How could something so cute be so inwardly vicious? Luckily her Riolu, as an aura reading Pokemon, was much more aware of his motives. At the mention of a fight his ears perked back, both reluctant and intrigued by the idea at the same time. His first battle already? Despite the bug type’s small size, Rin’s inexperience wasn’t about to let him underestimate his potential opponent’s ability in a fight.
The Riolu looked back up at its trainer, attempting to relay the Caterpie’s request in a way she’d understand through various movements and fighting stances. It seemed to click eventually, for the girl’s grin only widened further. “A battle in return for our help sounds good to me! What about you, Rin?” She shared the same sentiment of nervous excitement as he did. But neither of them seemed like they were about to back down from this challenge, as the Riolu gave a determined nod after a moment of thought. <Hmph.> the Caterpie said aloud as the Riolu looked scared at the prospect of potentially fighting against him later on. He would deal with that scaredy cat later though. As they moved further into the woods their was a particularly large tree. As the trio was walking past it one can hear snickering of some kind. Caterpie was the first to look and immediately turned pissed. What could be seen was a Taillow sitting in the tree with a green band in it's mouth as it's eyes seemed to be mocking the Caterpie. Rin was no scaredy cat! He’d show him when the time came, put that grouchy green caterpillar in its place. ..Hopefully. But it looked like they’d have to wait on that just a little bit longer now that it seems a new Pokémon has come into the picture. The pair followed the Caterpie’s ticked off gaze towards the treetops, watching him and the Taillow with curious interest. At first glance Aurora merely assumed that this stare-off was the result of conflicting natures – bird versus bug – but a closer look was able to pinpoint the green object lying in its grasp. Was that the precious object this little guy was looking for all this time?
Aurora took once last look at Caterpie before focusing her gaze on the smirking bird. First things first: Pokedex time. Taking out the device from the bag she totally had with her this whole time, she pointed the end at the creature sitting in the tree. “Taillow, the Tinyswallow Pokémon. Taillow has a fierce personality, never backing down, even against the most powerful opponents.” Woah, they sounded pretty feisty. Maybe this one would be different and make things easy for the group. “Hey, Taillow!” the trainer started, waving a hand as if to get the bird’s attention. “I think you’ve got something that belongs to our little friend here. Mind giving it back so we can get on to our first battle?” Her face was smiling, voice friendly in tone in attempt to coax the Pokémon into doing her request. The Caterpie turned to look at Aurora with one eye. He didn't understand this human. His intentions were not good and he wasn't a pleasant person. Them being friends? Pfft she didn't know anything about him. He simply shook his head and then turned back his fierce eyes towards the headband that was in the Taillow's mouth. Depending on her next words he would act violently or..violently. The degree depended on how cocky the Taillow felt. The Taiilow chirped in a melodic way before saying <Nope~ This is mine. I found it. I'm going to keep it~> he said as she turned and shook her tail feathers at the girl. She then turned around and stuck out her tongue at Rin and the Caterpie before laughing to herself a bit. She loved causing rifts in the peace. Caterpie upon hearing this snapped and charged forward towards the tree she was on. He then began to climb in an attempt to tackle her out of it. Even with the type disadvantage he was sure he wouldn't lose at this point. He wasn't high enough that Aurora couldn't stop him but it was a slim chance she would be able to. Even if Aurora had been able to hear the Caterpie’s inner thoughts, she still wouldn’t think he was a bad Pokemon. A little rough around the edges, maybe – especially in his vocabulary – but certainly not bad. Nah, she always gave others the benefit of the doubt no matter what the situation. This Taillow, on the other hand, sure was making things difficult. Blonde brows furrowed at the bird’s actions; now that wasn’t very nice. Maybe it just needed a little coaxing, if she could try and trade the headband for a berry or something…--
Well, so much for that plan. "-Hey!" At the sight of the bug type suddenly rushing up the tree, Aurora was snapped out of her scheming as she lunged forward in an attempt to grab the caterpillar. No luck- man, was that thing fast. Her brows now begin to furrow deeper in a pinch of growing frustration. She can’t have these Pokemon beat each other up over a headband! She’d seen plenty of bickering like this back at the ranch with the younger Pokemon, so settling squabbles between them was something she was plenty used to; though her ways might not always be completely orthodox.
“Alright Rin, looks like we need a new plan. Use Quick Attack on the tree, hard as you can!” The Riolu was somewhat surprised by the sudden command, but nodded obediently and followed his trainer’s orders nevertheless. The tactic, of course, was to shake the tree enough to stop Caterpie from reaching his target and hopefully shake a bit of sense into both of them as well. Honestly, bickering like children! Upon impact, the tree gave a hard shudder, most likely giving the bird and bug pair a difficult time holding on. As the Riolu smacked into the tree the Taillow went slightly aloft to avoid the shaking and hovered inches about where she was perched. She then began to laugh at how feeble the attempts of the Riolu were and with her eyes one could tell she was silently mocking and judging him. The Caterpie on the other hand was shaken quite a bit by the Quick-Attack hitting the tree and whipped around before basically screaming <Don't interfere! This is my fight! I'll get my precious headband back!> at this point he crawled back down on the ground as he saw the Taillow get in the air and narrowed his eyes before shooting a String Shot up at it. The Taillow managed to avoid it before laughing some more as the Caterpie cursed himself before getting ready to shoot another. Still no good. Hmm.. The girl took a brief moment to think while the Caterpie shuffled down the tree, clearly not happy with her medaling behavior thus far. But she’d be darned if she was about to give up now! If the Caterpie would just chill out for a minute, this would all be a whole lot easier- no matter how fast he might be, even Aurora knew he’s still the one with the type disadvantage and any fight probably wouldn’t end well on his part. “Rin, keep Caterpie occupied while I talk to Taillow.” Back to square one.
<Got it!> The Riolu nodded once more, this time moving towards the Caterpie; maybe his fight would end up starting a little early. But he wasn’t looking for that just yet. Instead of downright attacking the bug, Rin merely aimed to shove him out of the way enough to prevent his next String Shot from hitting its target. During this time, Aurora jumped up as high as she could to grab hold of the nearest branch on the tree, and in a few swift movements she was squatting on the same one that held the Taillow. These were the times when her athletic agility and determination to stay fit surely paid off. With her back towards Caterpie, her own body served as a divider for any more taunts, attacks, or otherwise between the squabbling pair. “Hey hey now, that dirty old headband can’t taste too good, right?” She spoke with a gentle yet determined tone as she unthreateningly reached into her bag, pulling out the assortment of colorful and juicy-looking berries she’d gotten from the lab and held them out towards the Pokemon. “Wouldn’t you much rather have one of these instead?”

There was no way this string shot was going to miss! No way, no how! At least, that's what teh caterpie thought until the riolu shoved him out of the way. The taillow was still hovering over her space, watching as the string shot made her way. However, the path suddenly deviated away from her. What a pathetic little caterpie! He couldn't even hit a target that was standing still! She laughed to herself and at the caterpie. <Hohohoho, my my, such accuracy won't get you anywhere!> She said, kawing at the caterpie with taunting remarks.
The caterpie glared straight at Aurora and her riolu. <What the hell, guys. I said this was my battle. Seriously, stay out of my way. This is my battle> HE then used string shot on the riolu in an attempt to keep him out of the way of the battle. He felt the need to solve this himself. No, he HAD to do it himself, for such was hte only way of getting his headband back. When he turned to finish the battle, he was angry at Aurora. <Didn't you hear me? I said stay out of my way!> The Taillow continued to laugh at the caterpie's expense. The team she was face was pretty horrible and all over the place. As she laughed, she saw the berries, flying closer to them. <Oh my, such lovely looking berries! Why yes, I would love some!> She said, headband still in her mouth as she tried to grab some. Such things were meant to be hers, and when someone offered, it was perfect, right?

Back down on the battlefield, Rin stood defiantly between his trainer and the infuriated Caterpie. With its friendly nature, rarely would this Riolu wish to intentially pick a fight, but he needed to calm this bug down. Why couldn’t he just see that they were trying to help him? It’s not like he was having any luck getting the dumb item back on his own! And now, after successfully deflecting the Pokemon’s attack on Taillow, it seemed as if he were becoming the target of attack himself. Rin’s eyes widened at the String Shot, too inexperienced to react in time. The small Pokemon let out a light yelp as it was knocked towards the tree, stuck to the bark by the sticky white substance. <Well we wouldn't even have to help if you were capable of winning on your own in the first place, you big grouch!> He spoke in a childish tone of voice as he immediately began pulling himself out of the weak webbing.
In the meantime, Aurora’s attention remained focused on the Taillow, the girl oblivious to the commotion below. She watched the bird Pokemon carefully, feeling as if the other wouldn’t give up the headband that easily after all that taunting earlier. But she was so close- she had to get it back for Caterpie so he could stop being a grumpy old worm. As the bird drew near, her mind raced with contemplation about what to do next. Right as Taillow opened its beak to grab one of the berries, Aurora’s hand shot towards the green cloth within it and attempted to grab it before the Pokemon could pull away. Of course she’d still leave the berries for her in return, it was still a trade in her eyes after all. Surely then Taillow would understand; in the end she had no use for the headband and would find that the berries were a much better bargain anyways. Everybody wins! If only she could manage to take the band while the bird was still distracted by the berries, that is.

[style=padding:10px; text-align: center; font-size: 75px; text-transform: uppercase; color: #434969;] Pokémon ENCOUNTER The Caterpie was absolutely furious to hear the young Riolu speak so openly to him. His body shook with rage, and he had half a mind to first beat up the Taillow, then deal with the Riolu. Gosh, these people! Wriggling up quickly to the Riolu, he shoved his face close to the Riolu, <Look here, I told you out of my way! I don't need your help> He emphasized the last word, clearly showing that he would not be kind to those that got into his way. Turning back to the Taillow in the tree, he saw the girl talking to the bird. Did he have to do this explanation again? Wiggling back to the tree, he fumed to himself as he thought about what he would do to this girl.
The Taillow tilted her head, she really wanted those juicy berries. It was extremely tempting to get those....all she had to do was swoop down there and take some. If she got back fast enough, maybe she could keep the berries and the headband. In the back of her mind, the Taillow was sure that this trainer would take the headband while she was down there, but it wasn't strong enough to affect her decision. Taking off from the branch, she made a beeline for the berries, leaving the headband dangling from the branch.

Uh-oh, now he really set him off. The Riolu gulped slightly at the Caterpie’s suddenly close proximity, momentarily frozen in his movements from the other’s bitter words as he pressed his body further back against the tree trunk. Despite the bug’s much smaller size, he was all too intimidating to the young Pokemon. No- he had to be brave! Especially when he could easily sense the waves of vengeful aura radiating off his body. It’s just a tiny caterpillar anyways, right? Steeling himself, he pushed free of the rest of the string shot and threw the sticky web towards the Caterpie in an attempt to stall his attention further.
Alright, so Aurora’s plan seemed to be working. Just a little farther and she could snatch the headband right from under Taillow’s beak. She didn’t like having to pull tricks like this, but hey, it was a pretty fair trade if you asked her. As soon as the bird took off towards the berries, the trainer darted around her and dove at the headband while leaving the berries in her wake for the flying-type to take as she pleased. Finally she grasped the light green cloth, a huff of relief escaping her as a victorious smile spread wide across her face. “Whew, got it. Thanks, Taillow!” Regardless of whether the bird truly wished to give up the band or not was unknown to her, but no way was she giving the item up now. Hopefully the berries would keep her occupied enough to leave them alone now.
She dropped down from the branch she sat in, right in between the Caterpie and her own Pokemon. Back facing the tree, she knelt down and gave Rin a few ‘good job’ pats on the head while smiling warmly at Caterpie. “Told ya we’d get it back.” She extended her hand with the precious item loosely in her palm. “You know… just because you need some help once in a while doesn’t make you weak; you can find strength in friends.” Rin simply watched from where he stood beside his trainer, giving a determined nod in the Pokemon’s direction as if to confirm Aurora’s words.

The Caterpie stopped halfway up his climb on the tree when he saw Aurora had the headband, Immediately his rage quelled and he went back to his normal disgruntled state. As he scooted back down he crawled over to her and bowed his head slightly before mumbling <I didn't need your help. Thanks though.." he said as his voice trailed off and he also bowed slightly at the Riolu he had attacked in his rage. The Taillow on the other hand had eaten the berries given to her and chirped happily. It was then that she realized Aurora had already climbed back down. So she proceeded to fly off the tree and landed on her head as if expecting more berries for free even though she had given all of them such a hard time. The trainer couldn’t help but let out a small giggle at Caterpie’s bow. Such a change in behavior all of the sudden! She knew he wasn’t all bad. Rin seemed to feel the same, his wary face finally breaking into a cheerier smile. And then, before Aurora could even stand back up, she felt a sudden weight on her head. “Hm?” It took a moment, but she eventually seemed to realize what the bird was after this time. “-Oh! You want more food, huh?” Well let’s just see what she’s got then! ...But, she’d already given her all the berries she'd had. As she rummaged through her bag, her face dimmed at the realization. A second later, however, something else seemed to send a glimmer of satisfaction through her eyes.
“I don’t have any more berries, but I did pack a spare granola bar. Here-“ she pulled the thing out, peeling back its wrapping and breaking off the treat into separate parts. “We could all use a little snack after all that commotion, wouldn’t you guys agree?” Hopefully it would help the bird and bug pair to get along better, too. With yet another warm smile she began handing out the pieces, giving one to Rin before offering some to Taillow and Caterpie. The Riolu took his eagerly, plopping down in Aurora’s lap before hungrily digging in. After wolfing half his share down, he suddenly turned to Caterpie with a curious face. <Hey…why’s that thing mean so much to you anyways?> Clearly referring to the headband they’d gone through so much trouble to get back.

The Taillow chirped happily before taking the granola and munching on it for a bit. After this she flew up a bit before landing on Aurora's shoulder and squawking for more of everything. She really valued material things that was for sure. The Caterpie shook his head from being supposedly gifted with granola and took back his headband before putting it over his head. <No thank you. I appreciate the help.> he then began to waddle off into the road. For a second though he stopped and turned his head to take a good look at the girl who had saved him from a long battle.
