Pepper stepped onto Route 1 holding Banjo close at her side. She was already in love with her furry, bad-tempered Pokémon. He rumbled every time she touched him, but every time she did he melted almost immediately. It was almost as if he had to remind himself that enjoying her touch didn't mean he wasn't a badass anymore. She slid her fingers into Banjo's fur.
"We're going to be the best, Banjo! Just you wait and see, we're going to have the best team and we're going to live our journey! Maybe they'll even invite us to be Gym Leaders someday!" Pepper grinned broadly at Banjo, her dreams revived by the puppy.
"We'll have to sleep along the route tonight, I think." She looked up at the sun, judging its path. "It's already getting late. It took him a long time to catch you." She turned and grinned down at Banjo. "But I guess that just means that you're a one-person Growlithe, doesn't it?"
Banjo huffed. His new trainer chattered. Still, she kept petting on him like that and it was nice. Maybe she wasn't too bad. He followed her gaze to the sky and wagged his tail. Sleeping out under the stars would be nice. He enjoyed it. And if he cuddled up close to her for warmth, maybe she'd keep petting him in her sleep! That would be nice.
Banjo sniffed the ground and searched around. He wanted to keep a wary eye out for anything that might hurt his trainer. He would be a good Watch Dog!
"...and I'll have to make sure I have the right type of Pokémon food, and..." Banjo huffed and crouched down, practicing his pouncing on a leaf in the path. Despite himself, he couldn't help his puppy status and the fact that her good cheer was rubbing off on him. They were going to be bonded for life, after all. He chewed up a stick and gamboled around her legs, keeping up with her and enjoying himself in the sunshine.

Pepper watched Banjo gamboling around her legs and laughed, stopping and leaning down to ruffle his ears and give him a tight hug. She was in such a good mood! Nothing would ruin it, she was sure. She scratched her way down his side before thoughtfully looking into her pack at the items Scuba Steve had given her. She looked over the empty Pokéballs before tucking them into slots on her belt and grabbed the items, studying them one by one. The Pokédex went into another pocket on her belt for easy grabbing and she opened one of the deeper pockets, putting the potions in it. She then opened the opposite pocket and put the Cheri and Pecha berries in it, looking down at Banjo. "Here, Banjo." She knelt and pulled a bright blue collar out of the pocket she'd just put the berries into. It had been an impulse buy when she'd first left home, and it was still pristine thanks to her careful keeping of it. She buckled the collar around Banjo's throat and touched the tag that said her name on it. "There," she declared, grinning at him. "We'll get your name engraved on the tag in the next town we come to." Banjo garumphed at her, so she hugged him tightly and kissed the top of his head. There was an item slot on the collar, so she carefully slid the Oran Berry into it. "Here, you hold this. You may need it in battle." She kissed him again. Banjo garumphed again and his ears twitched. When he heard the voice muttering evil things, he growled softly. >I'm not stupid.< He growled under his breath, eyes glaring into the trees searching for the Pokémon that dared challenge him. Pepper heard him growling and looked at him before following his gaze, searching around through the branches. "What is it, Banjo?" She slid her fingers through his fur. "Is it a Pokémon?" Banjo garumphed, which she was beginning to think was his agreement noise. Pepper nodded and stood up, searching the trees. Her eyes narrowed as she tried to make sense of whatever she saw. The starly watched from afar of what the trainer and the growlithe would do, curious as to how this will work. He had such a plan to scare them and it was going to be perfect! He snickered to himself before realizing that he had been found. Curse the acute sense of the nose! Guess he was going to have to wing it. He quickly unfurled his wings, flying straight at the trainer with a quick attack. <CAW CAW!> HE said, hoping that it would put a sense of fear in the trainer. He flew around the trainer, shouting and growling at her just to intimidate

Pepper gasped as the Starly flew out of the tree at her. She threw her arms above her head, huddling slightly to keep herself from being harmed too badly. She heard Banjo snarling and barking beside her and ducked down, dropping to her knees beside him. She stared at the Starly, feeling the pain where its claws had scratched her. She stared up at it. "Can you get to it to bite it, Banjo?" she asked, wiping the blood from her cheek. Banjo garumphed and she nodded, determination appearing on her pretty face. She pushed her black hair out of her face and glared at the Starly. "Do it, then. Make that Starly sorry it messed with us." Banjo garumphed again and took off at a loping run, circling back around and running at his kneeling trainer. She was still watching the Starly, so it was a surprise to her when he sprinted forward and used her as a springboard, bounding off of her shoulder and leaping into the air, snarling as he tried to get near enough to the flying bird to clamp his jaws down on it. A growl from a bird? Well, even if it did lower Attack, it didn't seem to do very much scaring, especially now that the trainer had figured to try and pin point the Starly's location. This also meant that the Growlithe would be attacking. Well, Starly didn't see where the Growlithe was coming as he swooped in the air, only to be caught by sharp teeth. This was a painful attack but, soon the Starly got loose, enough to struggle in the air for a moment, feathers flying everywhere as he swooped up, only to turn into the air, like an airplane would and swoop down towards the Growlithe with a tackle attack. <I'll get you!> He cawed out to the dog-like Pokemon, his face filled with rage but, he was going to beat this guy and get his way; even if he first attempt at scaring him didn't work. For some reason, the Starly thought fighting was the answer to everything.

Pepper's eyes narrowed calculatingly. Banjo landed on his feet and took several steps to arrest his momentum, ears back and eyes still on the starly. Pepper watched the flying bird dive for her Growlithe and her eyes narrowed even further. "Banjo, when it hits you bite its wing! Take away its ability to fly!" The bird's advantage would be gone, then. Banjo let out a growl in answer and braced himself. When the bird crashed into him, instead of yelping and squirming unhappily like a less aggressive Pokémon would've done, Banjo twisted his furry body around to try to clamp his mouth down around one of the flapping wings. Pepper clenched her fists, remaining calm and confident as she waited to see if her pup was able to get the job done. If they took away the Starly's ability to fly, it wouldn't be able to get away from Banjo's deadly teeth. Banjo :: Growlithe :: Level: 5 [Intimidate | Flash Fire] Bite | Roar Health is Mid Green

The attack was perfect and accurate, but the Growlithe didn't seem hurt. The Starly found this weird; he was pretty sure his tackle should have made the fire type writhe in pain. He eyed the canine suspiciously, wary of its actions.
When the Growlithe twirled around and clamped down on on of his wings with its sharp teeth, Starly swore he could hear his bones cracking from the bite. He winced in pain and pried his injured wing out of the opponent's mouth. <Oh, you managed to disable my flying? You must be so proud of yourself.> Speaking in a condescending tone, the bird scoffed at the Growlithe.
<Even if I can't fly, I can still kick your sorry ass, mutt!> The Starly leaped forward, trying to ram his head into the fire puppy's jaw and shatter all of its teeth. Payback is a bitch!

Pepper hissed in a breath as she saw the bird tackle Banjo again. She gritted her teeth against the urge to run in and beat the bird with a stick to get it to back off of her sweet Growlithe. Such a thing shouldn't be done, though, so she thought through what she was doing and how best to end it. Was the Starly injured enough to succomb to a Pokéball? She looked at the spunky thing and shook her head. No. Not yet, it wasn't. She studied it for a few moments, looking for places it might be injured enough to make it give up the fight without going overboard. She wanted to be ruthless, not cruel. "Banjo, bite it again!" She decided, face grim. Banjo growled and stood up from where he'd been tackled, shaking it off and staring at the bird. >You aren't strong enough to kick an egg's ass, bird,< He snarled, jumping forward and snapping his jaws shut. The Starly had tried his best to tackle the Growlite and was able to actually put some strength into it but, it seemed that his attacks were not worth this Pokemon and he was becoming weak. The burning sensation traveled down his broken wing as he winced in pain, only to open his eyes to the dog-like Pokemon running towards him with shiny, sharp teeth. <Nooooo!!!!> Life flashed before the Starly's eyes as the teeth came down, clenching onto his head. He struggled the best he could, shaking his feather-covered body back and forth until, the bird dropped to the ground, lifeless with his eyes swirled. It seemed that the bird had Fainted now. Good Job Growlithe!
Inside the bushes though, there was another sound or rather, two sounds back and forth. Perhaps there were two Pokemon arguing? Whatever could they be talking about.

Pepper punched her fist into the air in victory and grabbed a Pokéball off of her belt, throwing it at the Starly. She bit her lower lip in the hopes that it would hit and the Starly would be sucked in and caught. She was going to name the little asshat 'Punch.' She supposed she'd have to splint his wing until she got him to the Pokémon Center, too. She dared to take her eyes off of the Pokeball and search for two sturdy sticks to use. Banjo garumphed when he noticed what she was doing, and since she was so caught up in worrying about the punk bird whose ass they'd just kicked he crouched into a pouncing position and inched forward through the bushes to investigate the noises. He waved his tail, enjoying what he was doing, and prepared to attack whatever was beyond. The pokeball shook a few times, but the Starly didn't have enough energy left to break free and his capture was successful. The pokemon was Pepper's now. Hopefully, she will do something about the bird's broken wing before the wound gets infected and the pokemon loses his ability to fly forever.
The commotion was coming from a Lotad and a Buneary. The bunny was cowering on the ground, bawling her little eyes out. She was being bullied by the Lotad, but she didn't have the courage to stand up for herself. Even if she tried to resist, the cruel water type was stronger then her and he could beat her up without breaking a sweat.
<Didn't I make myself clear enough yesterday, shithead? Huh? I warned you if I find you on my turf again I'm going to break your legs! I'm a man who keeps his promises, you know!> The Lotad grabbed the Buneary by her ears and slammed her into a tree before straddling her. He pressed his legs on the Buneary's and began to apply force on them. The normal type cried out in pain as she felt her bones cracking from the Lotad's strength. <Someone! Please, help!!>

Pepper grabbed two sturdy sticks that looked about the length she needed and was about to release the injured Starly from his Pokeball to work on his wing when she heard Banjo growling softly. She looked up and searched around until she spotted his bright yellow tail waving low and aggressively, sticking out from a bush. She walked up behind him and peeked over him into the bushes and bit down on her lower lip when she spoted the Lotad bullying the little Buneary. She knelt and laid one hand on Banjo's shoulder, leaning down and murmuring against his ear, "Easy. We have to be smart about this. He looks like he's a mean one, and water types are strong against fire types." She studied the Lotad carefully, searching for any weaknesses it might have. Punch had been easy enough...take away his wing and that was that. The Lotad, though... Pepper frowned at the Pokémon. He certainly seemed to be a bully, judging by the way the Buneary was crying. She fisted her hand in Banjo's fur and made a snappy decision. "Use Roar. See if you can scare the Lotad off. Bullies tend to be weak and scared when pushed." Banjo growled his agreement and drew in a deep breath, letting out a roaring bark that made him sound about three times his size, trying to scare the Lotad away. <That's right, I'm going to kill you!> The Lotad smiled, pushing more pressure on the Buneary as she screamed out from underneath he water type. Who would help her in this situation? The bull had been bothering her for sometime now about the food shortage in Route One. Since the Fall season is approaching, if a Pokemon didn't migrate, they had to survive. This Lotad had been bullying other Pokemon in hopes of stealing the land and their food so he could survive. Isn't that was all Pokemon were meant to do.
Well, the Lotad and the Buneary didn't notice the trainer but, the roar came from out of the bushes and the Lotad jumped, right off the rabbit-like Pokemon, allowing her to crawl behind the tree. The Lotad was shaking in his skin, quickly looking around for what had caused it. With the Halloween season and the Zombies and Monsters, it seems that perhaps the Roar could be caused by something bigger and creeper. <I'm outta here!> The Lotad yelled out, running off from the scene without even looking back. He would be back later to beat up more Pokemon for food but, he didn't want to risk his life right now.
The Buneary shook, her eyes closed as she sobbed. <P-Please don't hurt me...> She cried out, trying to keep her body from being damaged anymore. She was already in so much pain.

"Good job, Banjo." Pepper scratched his ears in reward, smiling as the Growlithe leaned into her touch with a look of sheer bliss. Pepper looked towards where the Buneary had fled. She grabbed Banjo by the scruff when he would've gone forward to sniff at the normal type. "Easy, puppy...you're pretty intimidating. No need to scare it any more than it already is. You're intimidating, my sweet boy." She kissed his nose when he looked at her and he garumphed, looking torn between pride and disgruntlement at that statement. Pepper grinned widely down at him. "You did great, sweet boy." She patted his shoulder and straightened, stepping out of the bush into the slightly clear spot beyond. Banjo garumphed and followed after her, not willing to allow her to be alone with a strange Pokémon. He laid down obediently just on the other side of the bush and watched alertly as Pepper knelt down. "Hello," she murmured softly to the Buneary that she could just see on the other side of the tree. "I'm not going to hurt you. You look like you're bad enough off. Why don't you come over here and I'll see how bad it is?" She bit down on her lower lip, surveying what she could of the injured little Pokémon and then looking around to try to find a place to set up her tent so that she could camp for the night. The Buneary looked injured, and Punch was definitely injured. Pepper would take some time to bind the injuries on her Starly and on the Buneary if she could get the poor thing to trust her. She was still scared of what they would do to her, scaring off the other so easily with a roar and she could not help but shiver as she wobbled over, her legs not steady at all due to the fear she felt all over her body. She was almost halfway there when a sudden boom was heard from nowhere and she looked up to see a large dragon right in front of this. The sight of its teeth terrified her as she ran in the opposite direction immediately and tried to escape the scenery before it got any worst.

The trainer looked to be somewhat intimidating to the new pokemon around route one and he had to stop Pepper before she became any worst. Something about her appealed to him, maybe her looks or maybe her booty. But her attitude and use of roar was just an ugly trait that he did not approve of. He held onto the back of his Salamence as he attempted to land right in the middle as the girl was trying to get the Buneary to come near her. And right as Toothless landed, she went against her name and showed her teeth to both pokemon on the field, sending a very intimidating roar at the same time. The roar scared the Buneary away as she looked the Growlithe right in the eyes. >Now this is how you scare someone!< She said, licking her teeth as she wanted to give the impression that she was about to eat her prey. It was more to scare her than to actually do it. Sam did not get off of Toothless yet. So it just looked like a wild Salamence in front of the trainer now, instead of a trainer and his pokemon. ::Salamence:: Intimidate! Trying to scare Growlithe!

Pepper was almost close enough to reach out and offer the Buneary a small treat when fear engulfed the poor little Pokèmon's expression and it fled. Anger washed through her and Pepper stood, turning to take Banjo to task for scaring the Buneary after she'd told him not to. She came face-to-teeth with Toothless. The color drained from her face and she was vaguely aware of her puppy running to her and hiding behind her legs. Banjo's fear reminded her of the Buneary's terror and her anger returned...and multiplied. She walked right to the dragon and swatted it on the snout. "Bad Dragon!" Sparks shot from her vivid gaze and she looked fit to kill. "No scaring the nice Pokèmon! She was injured and already scared from what that bully of a Lotad was doing and you went and scared her into running on her injured legs, you big bully!" Pepper seemed to realize, quite suddenly, that she was yelling at a presumedly-wild Salamence that could severely injure her. The angry flush of her cheeks drained away again, leaving her white as a freshly-painted wall, and she backed away, looking for somewhere to hide. Banjo poked his head out from behind Pepper's legs and growled as he caught a vaguely familiar scent. But his Pepper was backing away, so he backed up with her. He pressed against her legs and took comfort from her hand on his head. He was proud of her for standing up against the dragon for the Pokèmon they didn't even know...even if they should have been running at the time. Although Toothless had evolved to this form, she was still relatively young in age, having only been born a couple of years ago. When she had her nose swatted at, she was not angry but instead confused and actually scared for a minute there. Her eyes began to water and she was about to wail out because she was being bullied, which would have been bad as someone her size and strength would probably cause a hydro pump if she were to wail. But luckily, she was stopped by Sam before this could happen, as he dropped from her and fell down on the ground while looking at Pepper. "Oh sorry! I must have scared away your pokemon. My bad, that was not my intention." He said. This probably disappointed or relieved Pepper at that moment, as she just found out that the wild pokemon wasn't wild. That meant it was tame and wouldn't just attack out of nowhere, but it also meant she couldn't capture a Salamence because it belonged to another. Sam then looked at Pepper in the face, analyzed her and her Growlithe before he began to speak. "Oh! That Growlithe looks very impressive. A bit small but impressive. I have an Arcanine myself so I know how powerful they can become. Want me to teach you how to get it big and powerful?!" He asked. He was normally friendly and helpful, but today he was in a troll mood. He played the act of a helpful person but actually wanted to mess with Pepper and her Growlithe for a bit. Mainly in retaliation for her whacking Toothless in the nose. ::Salamence::

Pepper's eyes went wide when she spotted Sam. She stood for a few moments before relaxing in relief. It wasn't a wild Salamence, so they wouldn't likely have to battle for their lives. It also meant she had committed a terrible feaupax by thumping the dragon. "Oh! I'm terribly sorry for smacking you, but it still isn't very nice to scare people like that. The Buneary you scared away was being bullied by a Lotad. Banjo scared him away and I was trying to get the Buneary to trust me so I could check her wounds." She looked at Sam when he offered to help her make Banjo big and strong. Hurt flashed across her face. Was she really so incompetent as a trainer? Pepper turned away from Sam and Toothless and breathed to control the urge to weep. She sniffed softly and turned back to him, straightening her spine. "If you mean to ask if we want to battle you, then someday when we're stronger and more ready I'd love to. If you mean to say you have advice for me, I'd love to hear it if you keep in mind that it's then mine to choose what I do with it. But if you're being a patronizing jerk and insinuating that I'm incapable, I must respectfully decline your offer." Her eyes were bright...suspiciously so, with the tears still trying to pool in them...but her voice was steady and even. Banjo sensed her distress and whined, leaning up to lick at her fingers. He tried to get her attention to comfort her, but she just stroked his head and kept staring at Sam. So he, too, looked at Sam and growled softly at the boy who was distressing his Pepper. >Leave my Pepper alone!< He growled.
