{desc=OHGODABUGEWWWW}She'd sunk to all time lows on her journey to get here, but she had finally made it. Pepper Dawson checked her battered sneakers and pulled on her battered light jacket. It was the only jacket she had, and it was a faithful old jacket, battered and thin though it was. Her winter on the streets had been rough on her, but it was a learning experience in so many ways.
She knew what she was doing now, to an extent. Moreso than she had when she'd first left home, anyway. Pepper sighed and ran a hand through her straight black hair. Well, she'd learned. She knew what to do now. That first year...that had just been miscalculation. The decision not to go home was stubbornness and the will to prove herself, not the lack of funds or will to go home.
Pepper grabbed her battered and worn but well loved belt and put it on. It was the last gift Dave had given her before he'd sent her out on her own. They'd had to poke some extra holes in it to get it to fit, but fit it did...finally. She tightened it to the third to last notch - when she'd first gotten it, the belt had fit nearly twice around her narrow waist. At least she'd filled back out some with good food and regular meals. She checked the pouches on the belt carefully before she straightened and grabbed the pair of leather thigh pouches that went with the belt, strapping them into place. They were for her extra Pokéballs and her items, and although they were easy to get into, they weren't in the way cluttering up her belt. That was for her team and main items like potions.
The teen sighed softly as she looked at a picture of herself and Dave. He'd been a close friend and wonderful mentor. "I'll do it, Dave. To make you proud."
He'd given her the adventure that she was embarking upon, so she would do him proud. Pepper started walking. It wasn't long after she'd stopped to eat a few wild apples at about midday that she topped a hill and stopped.
"I made it!" She pumped her fist into the air. "I found the ranger station!" She laughed and looked around, but seeing nobody except a few wild Pokémon around to hear, she sighed and contained her excitement. She took another few steps before something made her turn. She spotted a Caterpie following her and shrieked so loudly that it scared away all Pokémon in the immediate vicinity.
"EW A BUG A BUG A BUG A BUG EWWWWWWW!!!"
Once she'd escaped the bug mostly unscathed and only slightly traumatized, Pepper shuddered and did the 'EWBUGGROSS' dance for a few steps further, brushing at her body compulsively. "Oh ew ew ew," she was still muttering to herself as she stepped into the tent.
Right. Now where were the rangers? Hopefully she could get this done without any more - here, she shuddered in trauma - bugs.

[style=height:239px] POKEMON ENCOUNTER The ranger tent hadn't seen much action these days and there had been a drop in newcomers recently. This hadn't been a great year for them, but they hoped it would pick up soon. A bunch of rambunxious idiots were making a bunch of obnoxious noises, and causing quite a stir within. Of course it wasn't a huge group of rangers, but mainly a single ranger with his disruptive Gengar Snorkel. Scuba Steve was suddenly brought out by one of the other rangers by the ear to let his whole body get guided out towards the newcomer. Definitely a cutie, but he wasn't going to hit on her with his wife around. Oh no, Kassy wouldn't have loved that at all, but she seemed like a nice girl too. Steve let his jaw drop a little at the drop dead gorgeous figure, but he didn't think much of anything else besides women. Definitely a pervert in his own right, but Snorkel smacked Steve on the back of the head. Then he slowly adjusted the whip on the side of his ranger outfit as he quickly grabbed a backpack while slicking back his hair. Pretending to make it look all cool and like he had just taken a shower too. It was like he was trying to impress her, but the boots slowly trodded along the ground towards the new girl. "Hello there, my name is Scuba Steve, and this is my gengar, Snorkel, and you can just call me Steve if you wish," he said to the girl holding out his hand. 'Oh, you look new, well here you go, I decided to get this for you without asking, but do you happen to have a prestarter with you? If so, which pack did you want? Now if not, I could probably go and get you a pokemon too!" he exclaimed. Seeming to say a million things at once. Snorkel had disappeared, and then floated behind Pepper for a minute until he tapped her shoulder. Then Snorkel made the scariest face possible and shouted BOOO! "Snorkel, that wasn't nice," Ranger Scuba Steve said even as he fell on the floor laughing at the result no matter what. Even if she wasn't impressed, he'd still be laughing hard while handing the dirt-trodden backpack now to her with the essential starting items. Snorkel was giggling too and reppeared back near Scuba Steve before anything could be done about his scary tactics. The gengar's grin was wide with his teeth showing as he then pointed at Pepper at the same time, joining Steve in the rolling on the floor laughter. [style=font-family:timesnewroman; font-size: 12px; text-align: center;] Ranger Scuba Steve and his Pokémon Snorkel ::rangerm:: ::gengar:: Ranger Scuba Steve is a friendly ranger, and will be able to guide you to anything you need with his trusty gengar by his side. I mean, what else is not to love about a ghost Pokémon that can make you think twice before messing with him? Snorkel is a fun-loving, care-free ghost Pokémon that loves to play pranks on people all the time, but he's usually good natured about it. Steve is also very helpful and makes sure young, new trainers are able to be brought into the Pokémon world ready so they know what challenges await them. Also prone to random bouts of explaining things no one really cares about whether they are listening to him or not. Pepper tried to keep up with what Ranger Scuba Steve was telling her, her eyes wide. When the Gengar appeared behind her and shouted "BOO," she jumped and squeaked and turned and smiled widely.
"Oh a ghost Pokémon! You're so cute!" She would've hugged the Gengar, but she wasn't sure it was allowed. Was she allowed to hug random other people's Pokémon? She didn't know, so she thought she'd err on the side of caution and not hug the Gengar, although he really was a handsome boy. She grinned at him and batted her eyelashes before she remembered why she was there.
Oh right. A Pokémon of her own.
"I'm here for my first Pokemon," she told the Ranger. "I'm Pepper Dawson, and I've been waiting for this for a long, long time now." This was it. She was on the cusp of her grandest adventure ever. She just had to find out what Pokémon she was catching and she would have a companion for the rest of her life! Pepper danced in a circle before she stopped as a horrible thought hit her. What if he caught her a bug?
She swallowed and turned to look at Steve.
"Um...no bugs, please..." She hated bugs. It wasn't that she was scared of them...per sé...but...life would be miserable if she got a bug, at least until she found some creep of a boy to trade the bug away to. She hated the thought of trading away her very first Pokémon, but a bug wasn't a first Pokémon, it was a means to an end.

Ok, so she had training to to, a route to concur and a gym leader to beat, but that could all be done later! Right now she she had decided to take a wander back to the Ranger Station, where it had somewhat started for her. She'd already been travelling with her ponyta for a long time before she'd reached the station and been given her pidgey. Phaelon still hadn't evolved, but that wasn't too much of a problem, Ori, her ponyta, liked the way he was still small enough to perch on his head. But both of them were in their pokeballs at the minute, taking some much needed rest. Across her shoulders lay Riill, her beautiful dratini, who was curious to know more about the Ranger Station. Riill was the child of prophecy after all and she needed to learn all she could about this world if she were to truly bring balance. Nano, on the other hand, had just escaped the confines of his ball for fun and was vigorously bouncing up and down on Abi's head. As the three of them wandered through the ranger reservation, Abi thought she heard someone shriek nearby. Peeing through the trees she saw a young girl fleeing from a caterpie and eventually bumping into a ranger and his pokemon. Obviously she was here for her starter, and clearly she didn't want a bug type. Abi grinned, an idea forming in her head. She reached up and grabbed her joltik, bringing him close to her mouth as she whispered instructions to him. As both the ranger and his crazy pokemon began rolling around in the grass laughing their heads off, Nano sat ready on the end of Riill's tail. With a quick whip, she flung him over the treetops to join the ranger and the newbie. Abi swiftly climbed the nearest tree to find a good position to watch the madness from. Riill curled more tightly around her until she was comfortably crouched on one of the highest branches, concealed by the dying leaves. Together they watched Nano take on his pranking mission. The little joltik flew through the air like a fuzzy yellow bullet and slammed into the wall of the ranger's tent which pushed him back into a tree trunk. Sliding down comically he sat at the base of the tree for a few seconds, feeling a little dazed. When he came around properly he glanced up at the human girl nearby. That was the one! His Moonlady had told him that this girl would have lots of sugar and caffeine with! To get it from her he had to pretend to want to travel with her forever and ever! The crazy bug type giggled to himself. All the caffeine would be his! HIS!!!!! Scuttling forwards he made his way quickly over to the girl wearing black and green. He waved his tiny little arms up at her and screeched, <My SugarQueen! Give unto me all of your caffeine!! I will be yours until the end of my Moon Lady!> Yeah... Nano never made much sense... But he was trying at least! Riill (F) lvl 17 Nano (M) lvl 14.5 [/style] [style=padding: 10px;]Mwahahahahahahahahahahhahaha! [/style] [/style][/style]

Pepper stood watching the Gengar and his trainer dissolved into laughter, rolling on the ground. She sighed softly under her breath and lowered her head, ruffling her hair. Had they even heard her request not to give her any bugs? Probably not. They were cackling too hard.
Pepper tilted her head as she stared down at the pair, and she was about to open her mouth and speak again when something caught her attention. She was inhaling to ask if he could go get her Pokémon for her when the movement she'd caught out of the corner of her eye drew her full attention. She finished her inhale in one sharp gasp and stood staring at the Joltik for a full ten seconds in silence as the presence of the bug sank in.
"A BUG!!![/I]" She shrilled, leaping into the air and landing most probably right in the center of the ranger and his Gengar. She grabbed at the ghost Pokémon, shrieking loud enough to deafen. "THERE'S A BUG! EW EW EW EW EW EW EW!!! GET IT AWAY GET IT AWAY! OH KILL IT PLEASE!"

What bug was she talking about? And why did she want it dead? Was he meant to kill something for her? He was a frightening kitten after all... Beaming, he jumped up and down in front of her, <My lady my lady! I will kill this bug for you!!> He ran over to a little cluster of daisies nearby and began to smush them one by one with his tiny yellow feet. <Take that! And that! You daisybugs will never frighten my new trainer again! We will be together forever and she will love me because I'm fuzzy and cute!> All the while he was crushing pretty flowers he wondered why his trainer-to-be was yelling so much. Was it a game? Was he meant to play along? His real trainer, his Moon Lady, had told him to get as close to this dark haired girl as possible, he should definitely try that now, especially since the daisies were vanquished. Skittering over to the newbie, Nano bounced up onto her shoulder, smiled with his tiny eyes and waved happily. <We can have caffeine now yes?>Nearby, high up in a tree, Abi and Riill laughed quietly to themselves as they watched Nano accidentally wreak havoc. Pepper let out another shrill shriek, most probably right into the ears of the poor ranger and his Pokémon, and began smacking at her body to try to get the bug off of herself. "GETITOFFGETITOFF!!!"
Oh this was not a good day at all! Why wouldn't this bug leave her alone?!
"SOMEONE PLEASE HELP MEEEEEEEE!!!" Pepper's voice grew more shrill by the moment. She was beating at herself and unfortunately anyone who ventured within arm's reach would get beaten on as well by the flailing of her arms and legs as she tried desperately to fling the unsuspecting little joltik off of her.

As Scuba Steve finished his rolling scuba laughter technique, he stood up, wiping the tears off his eyes to see that the trainer met her first Pokémon. "Ohohoho, I see....y-you've met your first Pokémon! AHaheheheahah." He said, falling over and laughing again. Oh man, two random pranks in a day. How could it get any better than that? Snorkel also joined in on the laughter before he realized that he was getting clung to. The laughter stopped when the trainer shrieked once more. Steve stood back up, sticking a finger in his ear to see if there was anything that was keeping him from hearing. "Man. You can scream!" Steve said as he tried to reach over to get the joltik, only to get struck in the face by the trainer's flailing arms. He rubbed his pained jaw, stepping back as he looked at Snorkel. "Snorkel, if you would...." He said through his hurt jaw. The gengar nodded as he floated over, phasing through the trainer in order to take the little joltik off the trainer. <There there now. Snorkel should, at least, get that joltik off you. Besides, its pretty cute!" He said, attempting to display the joltik to her. "Now, I'm gonna go find you a Pokémon. Be right back. Snorkel, stay with this joltik and the trainer." He said, rolling away into the fields to see what Pokémon he should bring to the trainer.

Pepper whimpered and stared at the Joltik, staying well away from the bug. She cleared her throat and tried to regain some decorum by straightening her shoulders and dusting her clothes off. "Ew ew ew ew ew..." she was still whispering to herself, shuddering every now and again. After a few seconds she took a few extra steps away from the Joltik and the Gengar, just in case.
"Thank you, Snorkel, that was kind of you," she managed to say in a normal-ish tone. Without whimpering or whining or - god forbid - shrieking. "I have no idea why it thought it should jump on me..." She shuddered. "Oh, the horror!"
Pepper didn't like bugs. As far as she knew, she never had. The distaste for bugs had only grown since she'd left home, though. Have a few thousand nest on your scalp for warmth and food because you live in squallor on the street for a while and you get over them pretty quickly. Pepper hated them. Hated even the thought of bugs crawling on her.
The thought made her do the 'EW A BUG EW' dance again.

She was still grinning however as she climbed down the trunk and began walking towards the girl and the gengar. Riill chirped a greeting to Nano who squeaked back joyfully. "Hi there," Abi greeted the girl, deftly removing her joltik from the ghost type's grip. Riill nosed the tiny yellow pokemon and allowed him to crawl on top of her head. "Just my little joke, welcome to Cheyenne, my name's Abi, and the tiny spider you wanted to murder is my joltik, Nano."She couldn't help chuckling at the fun it had been to send Nano in after her. Pepper, still breathing heavily, stared at Abi blankly. A little joke? If that was the idea of a joke in this region, she'd hate to see what cruelty was. The girl must not have been too attached to the Tick, wanting it to go to Pepper as it had. Pepper looked at the Joltik for a few moments before she turned her eyes back to Abi.
"Oh," she said. What else could she say? Abi thought she was being friendly. Pepper kept a wary eye on the Joltik and took an extra step back just in case. "Well. Hello, Riill. Hello, Abi." She didn't acknowledge the bug. "Thank you for your welcome." Even if it had been mean-spirited in Pepper's eyes, the girl's intentions didn't seem too cruel and Pepper knew that she was an odd one, hating bugs as intensely as she did.

Abi had gotten a good laugh out of it, and perhaps one day they would meet on the battlefield where Abi could attack all of the girl's pokemon with bugs, just for fun! She grinned at the thought before looking around to see where her ranger had gone. "I'm sure he'll be back in a minute with your first pokemon", she said, curious to know what the girl would do if Scuba Steve returned with a wurmple or a weedle. "Anyway, I'd better be off, training to do!" With a curt nod to the girl and a grin flashed at the gengar (her fellow prankster), she turned and walked out of the ranger station, back to her own journey. "Um, bye." Pepper tilted her head thoughtfully. That girl would be one to watch. She clearly knew how Pepper felt about bugs. If Pepper was prepared for the appearance of a bug, she had a little bit more time to brace and didn't wig out...at least, not externally. But if someone knew that bugs were her weakness...
I'll just have to take care to avoid that girl in battles, or be prepared. I know she'll throw every bug she has at me now that she knows I'm scared of them. She'll try to shake me up as a trainer...catch me off guard and make me forget what I'm doing. Pepper sighed and fluffed her hair. No use borrowing trouble now, though...that'll come later, when you meet her again. She was nice enough...too bad. If not for the bug, we could've been friends.
Pepper turned back towards the path Ranger Steve had disappeared down and waited, glancing at the Gengar. "I hope I get a sensible Pokémon. A ghost or a snake, or even something cute and cuddly. No bugs," she confided in the Gengar.

<He's late... Snorkel found it strange that Steve was still not back. It's almost been an hour now, but the ranger was still nowhere to be seen. He must have been flirting with a woman again behind Kassy's back. The Gengar didn't want to imagine what would happen to Steve if his wife found about it. Sighing, the ghost type shook its head; that guy was always digging his own grave.
As Snorkel was about to go and look for Steve, fast and light footsteps could be heard in the distance. Suddenly, a ranger jumped out of the bushes. It was Steve, holding a pokeball in his hands. He was covered in bruises and bite marks, but he just kept smiling at Pepper. "Here's your starter. It's a Growlithe! It's a little violent so be careful with it. I almost got my arm bitten off when I tried to catch it."

Pepper took the Pokéball from Steve and hugged it to her for a moment before she smiled even more widely and threw it. She stared at the Growlithe that stood before her and before he could think of attacking anyone she dropped to her knees and hugged him tightly.
"Oh you're perfect! Are you a boy or a girl?" She looked over the disgruntled looking Growlithe, and then she beamed and held his face in her hands. "A boy. Perfect! You're just perfect!" She seemed to have (temporarily) forgotten that Steve was there. "I think I'll call you Banjo. Would you like that?" She scratched down the fiery furred body.
Banjo garumphed and leaned into the touch, warming to this odd person. He looked at the other trainer and the Gengar and growled a warning, but since he was getting a lovely belly scratch that he hated to interrupt, he decided that he'd let them get away...this time.
Pepper reduced her puppy into a puddle of squirming happiness from the extensive belly rub and then she bounded to her feet and flung herself at Steve. "Oh thank you thank you THANK YOU! Banjo's perfect!"
She turned and looked at Banjo, smiling broadly. "C'mon! Let's go see what other Pokémon we can meet!" She tangled one hand in the fur at the back of his neck and turned, skipping off with her 'perfect' new Pokémon.
