Alaina walked slowly onto the plains covered in show, lifting her booted feet high to avoid getting snow caught in them. She decided to let out her newest, and only, pokemon, Naliya. However, the problems soon arose when she pulled the pokeball out of her bag and realized she didn't have a clue as to what she was supposed to do. She thought they had covered all the uses of the pokeball at the orientation center: transferring, capturing - they had even explained how to issue commands as the Pokémon came out. But they had not explained how to actually get the Pokémon out. Oh. Boy. She blinked, and threw the pokeball randomly, trying to imitate the nurse's movements as she had shown them how to capture Pokémon. It was badly aimed, poorly thrown, and if there had been a tree and the button had been pressed, Naliya would probably have been rammed head-first into said tree. However, there wasn't, she didn't, and so it couldn't. The snow cushioned it's fall, and with a small - plop! - it fell into the snow. Alaina felt immensely foolish and ran over to get the pokeball out of the snow. She explored the small sphere, pulling it up close to her eyes in case there was any finely-printed instructions or something on it. She saw the button and decided to try pressing it, without realizing that that would bring Naliya out onto her face. Luckily, though, the Shinx had been trained to deal with such times, and simply stayed within it's ball for a few moments, until Alaina faced the ball down towards the ground. The Shinx fell into the snow with a similar - plop! She began prancing around in the snow by jumping up into the air, head thrust up as far it could go, then falling down into the snow a few inches away and repeating the process. Alaina chuckled, and ran after Naliya. She picked up her Shinx and brushed the snow off of its shiny blue coat. Smiling to herself, she began walking down the route slowly, looking somewhat absent-mindedly for any wild Pokémon.

Shivering up ahead of the path of were Alaina and Naliya was a small pink kitten Pokémon trapped inside a pile of snow. Just by looking at the kitten Pokémon you can tell that it seemed to have be poorly injured and famished. <Skiii!> The Pokémon purred, trying her best to keep warm. ::Skitty::

Alaina stroked Naliya, sending shivers of comfort down the Shinx's spine. The two were quickly bonding like man and domestic dog - however, that was a far cry from the beginning bond of the typical trainer and Pokemon. She looked ahead, and her eyes fell on a small gap in the snow. Curiosity peaked, she quickened her pace and peered into it, only to see a small Pokemon, clearly injured, shivering within it. Her eyes widened in sympathy. Alaina kneeled down and placed Naliya gently beside her. The more she observed the Skitty, the more obvious it became to her of what sort of shape the thing was in. The main thing she saw was that its ribs were plainly visible, casting small shadows in the Skitty's fur. She reached her hand forward to let the Skitty sniff it, wondering if the injured Pokemon would be trusting of her, though she doubted it.

The Skitty withdrew almost immediately, thrusting out a new layer of snow to hide itself. <"Skii Skii"> the pokemon cried out in alarm. Though as small as she was, the lump of snow hiding her collapsed, revealing the pink furred kit. Panicking, the pokemon turned to run, only to trip and fall on the snowy ground. Injured and embarrassed, the Skitty struggled to get up, half-wincing from the cold.

The previous sympathy Alaina had felt for the Skitty doubled right then, though she wasn't quite sure why. She turned to Naliya. Being her only four-legged Pokemon (the one most similar to the Skitty), Alaina figured the Skitty would be most comforted by Naliya. She could have been drastically wrong, but it was worth a shot.
"Can you talk to the Skitty for me? Tell her I won't hurt her more?" She whispered, not wanting to frighten the poor thing even more than it already was. As she spoke, she dug through her bag and pulled out one of the two Healing Potions she had received from the professor at the lab. Naliya wasn't the most reassuring creature ever. She preferred wildness, craziness, and hyper-active, never ending spurts of energy. But this sort of thing was important too, after all. Naliya purred her agreement, and took a few small steps towards the Skitty. Once she was a comfortable speaking distance away, she sat down and opened her mouth after a brief pause of trying to decide just how to say what Alaina wanted her to say.
<Hey... Uh, my trainer - that's her, right there - can help you. She's got a healing... Potion... Thing-a... Ma... Jigger. Thing. Anyway, it heals Pokemon really well. She won't hurt you, I promise.>

Urge to flee rising, Skitty blinked at Naliya a few times, before it tentatively rose, and inched closer to the Pokémon. <Are... are you sure she won't hurt me?> it mewed, shaking bits of snow out of it's smooth, pink fur.

<Yah, I'm sure. We learned about 'em at the lab, before we could become qualified for a new trainer. And she wouldn't know how to hurt you anyway. Pfft, she didn't even know how to get me out of my pokeball at first! Nah, you'll be fine. Come on.>
What Naliya said had been more to comfort the Skitty than to make fun of her trainer, though that had been the way it had come out. Either way, if it let the Skitty get healed, it was worth it. Naliya was a bit of an absent-minded fool, but once a goal was in her head, she did nothing else. Literally. That was both a very good trait and a very, very bad one. As soon as she was done trying to reassure the Skitty, she stood and turned to walk towards Alaina, beckoning towards the injured Pokemon, hoping it would follow.

Pink kitten took a shaky step forward, and then another. Soon it hopped along merrily, chasing after the Shinx. <Wait for me!> It mewed frantically, nearly falling over once more. It could live without another face-plant in the snow.
Wide eyes stared up at the trainer, blinking twice. <So taaaaall! I feel dizzy...>

Naliya proudly trotted back over to her trainer, the Skitty in tow, and sat obediently at Alaina's foot. Alaina grinned, stroking Naliya's head in reward for doing such a good job. She didn't understand pokespeak, so didn't understand that Naliya's success had been at her own expense. She kneeled down to be at eye-level, or as close to eye-level as she could get, with the injured Skitty. She pulled the Healing Potion out.
"I'm just going to spray this on you, and you'll be better. Maybe not all the way, I'm not entirely sure how much of your injuries this will heal... Yours look pretty bad..." She explained, as she slowly moved her hand around towards the Skitty's back. She pulled the trigger, letting the healing spray wash all over the Skitty.

Skitty winced, the spray stinging slightly. But soon, a soothing aroma filled the air, and Skitty could feel it's pain subsiding. Eyes squeezed tightly shut, it offered Alaina and Naliya a shaky grin. <Thank you both, I feel much better now!>
Eyes slowly opened, cheerful sparkle restored. <I wanna come with you!> It blurted suddenly, and then instantly regretted it. <I mean... if you want me to...>
Impulsive creature.

A grin split across Alaina's face as Naliya interpreted what the Skitty meant by pulling a pokeball from Alaina's belt and shoving it with her nose towards the Skitty. As a girl who had grown up playing Charades, and as a girl who had been about to offer Skitty a spot on her team anyway, it took her next to no time in figuring out what Naliya had meant.
"Of course you can come!" She exclaimed happily. She picked up the pokeball Naliya had pulled down and threw it towards the newly-healed Skitty.

Orb didn't shake one bit, evidence of Skitty's eagerness to join the team. Snow continued to fall from the sky, in fat flakes that threatened to bury the newly-full pokeball if it wasn't retreived soon.

Grinning, Alaina picked up the pokeball, brushed the snow that had gathered onto it off, and reattached it to her belt. She began walking forward on the route, beckoning for Naliya to do the same. Her second day, and she already had four Pokemon! Wow, this place really had been the right choice! Or, maybe that was taking it too fast... It only was the the second day, after all. Nothing was guaranteed, not yet. She let the bad thoughts fall off with the snow and continued moving down the route, searching for more Pokemon.

Alaina was not unlike any other trainer in the fact that wherever she was, she was bound to encounter wild Pokémon. And in the cold winter months, it was more than likely that she would encounter water and ice types. But that was not the case this time. An Ekans wriggled along in the snow, creating smooth zig-zagging patterns in the snow. flecks of snow dotted the snake Pokémons scaley skin, merging with the yellow markings. Its forked tongue flicked out into the air and back in again, tasting the surroundings for danger. Sensing the trainer, it lifted its head and stared at Alaina. Its eyes narrowed and it hissed defensivley, trying to look as menacing as possible. You have encountered an Ekans! ::ekans:: {Fun fact, spell ekans backwards. Cool, huh? Now try Arbok! } [/font]

((Haha, that's cool!)) Seeing the Ekans, Alaina grinned. Finally, a battle! Since the first gym was an electric gym, she had already decided to focus her training mostly on her Larvitar. The Ekans seemed defensive enough to not want to converse with her; Alaina decided to begin the battle right away.
"Go, Irasu! Use Sandstorm!" She cried, letting out her Larvitar. Bite wouldn't have been very effective; she decided instead to cause slow, but constant, damage to the Ekans. Irasu obeyed after a few moments of hesitation. How effective would a ground move be in the snow? Or would it be more powerful since the Ekans was used to the snow? Or it could be totally normal. Irasu dug down through the snow to get a bit of dirt and merged it with some of his own. He threw it on top of the snow, then dove headfirst into it, launching the sandstorm.

{I really don't know. I think the wind whips up some sand and throws it around in a cyclone.}
The Ekans did not expect a full frontal attack, he was only being defensive. The wind began to pick up, swirling dirt and snow around in a mini cyclone. Of course, this would not damage the Larvitar itself, but it might be fatal against Ekans. Indeed, the storm buffeted him, causing the snake Pokémon to flinch away. Angrily, he raised himself to his full height and opened his jaw as wide as he could. Pressure began to build within his mouth, glowing faintly. The recess of power steadily built up more and more, glowing white and humming faintly. When Ekans could hold it no longer, he converted the power into thousands of tiny glowing barbs, which began to zing through the air. Some where blasted away by the cyclone, but a few managed to break through, heading for the larvitar.

The Larvitar attempted to dodge the Poison Sting ((that's what it was, right?)) by jumping in the air. However, he hadn't tried jumping up high before, and weighing in at almost 160 pounds, he was not successful. Most of the stingers that had evaded the Sandstorm rammed into Irasu. Being both a rock and ground type, it was not very effective. However, his body had never dealt with poison before, and he was poisoned after the third stinger hit; the first stinger had actually poisoned him, but his bloodstream was a bit far off from his skin, so it had taken a few moments for the poison to slip into it. Irasu glared at the Ekans for several moments, causing a Leer attack. And the Sandstorm raged on.

((Yeah, it was a Poison Sting)) Ekans was hit once more by the Sandstorm, and then his defense was lowered. All in all, this really angered the Ekans, so it decided to slither through the grass as best as it could and try and bind the offending Pokemon with a Wrap attack.

The Ekans managed to Wrap around Larvitar, though while the snake was still entwined around him, Larvitar leaned down, jaws first, and attempted to bite the Ekans. Alaina stood by, hoping that the Leer had helped enough so that the Bite might do some amount of visible damage, even though it was dark move on a half-dark Pokemon. Meanwhile, the Sandstorm continued and the poison zapped out a bit more of Larvitar's health.

The Ekans hissed angrily in discomfort, almost letting go of the Larvitar. Anger reflected on it's yellow eyes. Without hesitating, the Ekans opened it's jaw, showing a glow of light before producing an array of poisonous barbs. At this close range, it would be almost impossible to attack. But then the sandstorm acted up again, buffeting the Ekans and stopping half the attack.
