Sure his pokemon were young and highly inexperienced, but how else were they going to learn anything except from battling? With a long scrawl he signed his name on the sheet at the front desk and picked out an empty room. He picked up the distinct scent of sweat as he entered and knew that a battle had only just recently taken place here. Whipping his tail back and forth he looked around the medium sized room and judged it acceptable before taking out two of his pokeballs. Releasing Flux and Scree onto the field he watched as they too glanced around at where they were. Flux blinked curiously up at her trainer while Scree flew up onto his head and settled himself there between Par's pointed ears. Together they waited to see who would arrive and challenge them to a battle. Would it be a single match? Or perhaps a double? Parallel would be ready either way. ~Pepper Dawson~ Pepper stepped into the Trainer's Lounge slowly with Banjo pressing close to her legs, glaring around in silence. She patted his head and glanced around, touching the Pokeball that held Punch. She was hesitant to inflict his particular attitude upon anyone, but his wing was still injured enough that she didn't want to battle with him outside of the lounge...at least here, she could hurry him back to the Pokémon Center. She glanced at the list on the front desk and wrote her name down beside one of the names already there, walking towards the room indicated. She stepped inside and stopped when she spotted the boy across the room. Pepper's head tilted, her eyebrows rose, and her teeth clamped down on her lower lip. Interesting fellow. She'd never seen anyone like him before. Banjo's ears perked up as he stared at the boy across the room and he sat obediently at Pepper's side while she tossed the Pokeball containing Punch. The Starly appeared - in a bad mood, as always - and waved his good wing, turning to complain at her. She sighed and rolled her eyes. "I know it hurts, Punch, but I can't keep you out of your Pokeball if you're going to try to attack everyone," she muttered, leaning down to check the spling on his wing before straightening and looking at the boy across the room. "Hi! I'm Pepper, and this is Banjo and Punch." She pointed first at her Growlithe, and then the cranky Starly that was pecking peevishly at her shoe. He looked around and emitted a low curious screech at her. His eyes lingered on her growlithe, sizing him up, as the trainer walked over to her position across from them. Flux chirped happily at the newcomer and rubbed up against her trainer affectionately. Watching the girl's slight reaction to him Parallel gathered that she had not yet encountered a pokemorph yet. So he was her first, how interesting. He flicked his tail absently and smiled as she released her starly and introduced herself. Parallel always appreciated good manners and already this trainer had managed to tick that box. He incline his head to her, his fangs glinting slightly as he continued to smile. "It is good to meet you and your pokemon Pepper. My name is Parallel, and these two here are Flux and Scree." At the mention of their names, both the young slugma and gligar perked up happily. Lifting his clawed wings, Scree jumped from Parallel's head and glided to the ground where Flux slid to join him. Flux was pleased to see another fire type on the field. She had never met a growlithe before! Humming pleasantly she waited for the match to start. Scree too was happy with their opponents, but that was merely because one of them was already injured. The starly appeared to have a broken wing, which would hinder him in battle. Parallel too noticed this and inquired, "How is your starly? Will he be all right to battle?" Parallel didn't want Pepper to think he was looking to win against her unfairly, he wanted a good equal match. As long as the starly felt strong enough to compete then it was ok with him. "Would you prefer a double match or two singles?" he asked her politely. ~Pepper Dawson~ Pepper tilted her head thoughtfully and looked down at the Starly at her feet. "I think he'll be fine to battle," she said honestly. "But I'll also be keeping a close eye on him and if he shows any sign that the battle hurts him, I'll stop it. If I force him to sit and wait for his wing to heal, his spirit will be broken, but I won't let him be injured any further, either." She knelt and stroked Punch's feathers. He gave her a glare and then turned his glare across the room towards Flux, Scree, and Parallel. He gave a cry and fanned his good wing, but Pepper rolled her eyes and picked him up, setting him on her shoulder. He gave her a considering, sly look, and she returned it with a glare. "Don't even think about it." The starly harumphed and hunched down, glaring at her and Parallel in turn. Every now and then its good wing flung outward, and if Pepper hadn't wisely put his broken wing closer to her head, he would've been smacking her each time he did so. "I don't have a preference," she told Parallel in regards to what she preferred. She looked at his Pokémon and bit down on her lower lip. Then she looked down at Banjo. "What do you think, Banjo?" Banjo garumphed and took a step forward, sizing up Scree. He licked his chops slowly and then sat and turned to look at Punch. Punch glared back at Banjo for a moment before standing and balancing carefully on Pepper's shoulder, beginning to walk down her arm. She caught on fairly quickly and picked him up from her shoulder, setting him down beside Banjo. "It looks like Banjo and Punch want doubles, if that's alright with you." She looked back up at the Pokémorph. He watched as her starly made his way to the ground beside the growlithe and understood that to mean they wanted a double match. "Excellent," he said, gesturing to his to pokemon, "let's begin."Both Scree and Flux had battled together before since they were both Parallel's starting pokemon. They had a vague plan of what to do, so without any instruction they moved forwards. Flus slid quickly over to Banjo and yawned widely at him, attempting to make him tired before she let out a large plume of smog and aimed it towards Punch. ~Pepper Dawson~ Pepper gritted her teeth as the opposing Pokémon took the first move. As the wings of the gligar struck her puppy and the smog engulfed her starly, she bit down on her lower lip and fought to keep her concern for them both off of her face. When she was sure they would handle the attacks, she took a breath of relief and got down to business. She narrowed her eyes in calculation. One hand rested on her hip and the other lifted and pointed. "Punch, use your good wing to blow the remaining smog away! Banjo, set fire to the gligar with ember." Punch extended his good wing and began to fan it, whipping up a firm breeze and blowing the smog away. Punch looked a little dazed and sickened. Pepper bit down on her lower lip again. She sucked on it for a moment. Banjo growled and opened his mouth, fire sparking in the depths. He inhaled deeply and howled, expelling a mouthful of embers at Scree, legs stiff, hackles raised. The flames licked at the air as they flew through it. Pepper nodded. "Punch, tackle the other one. Flux." Punch flapped his wing and then tucked it back against his body, eyeing Flux for a moment before he jumped forward to tackle Flux. Did that mean her move hadn't worked? Or had he simply been focusing on the other pokemon at the time. Dismissing that thought he decided to ask her to use the move again just in case. He had hoped that the starly would be poisoned early on, but the stakes on that were a little out of his favour unfortunately. He would have to make do with more physical attacks, even though it was quite clear that Pepper's pokemon were at a higher level. Flux blinked in surprise when the starly blew her smog away. Well that was mean! It was her damaging move and he just whooshed it away! What she didn't realise was that the bird pokemon was three levels her senior and that no matter how hard she attacked she wasn't very likely to do much damage. The flying type came at her with a tackle attack and she was pushed backwards along the field, squeaking with pain. After yawning at Banjo, she tried once more to use her smog attack on the starly, convinced it would faint him this time around. Poor deluded Flux... Scree too was having a difficult time, the hot embers of Banjo's move trying to burn his leathery wings. Flapping hard and gaining height he managed to extinguish them, but not before they'd done some painful damage. Screeching loudly he braced himself and dived at the growlithe, his wings glowing as he struck out first with his tail to kick up some sand, and next with his wings to hit the pup. ~Pepper Dawson~ Banjo stared at Flux for a few moments, eyes narrowed as he tried to figure out what her game was. Then he paused and blinked a bit before yawning as well. He shook himself when Pepper called his name and glared at her as if he were onto her game, albeit a little sleepier. Punch didn't need Pepper's instructions this time. He angrily began fanning his wing as he tried not to breathe in too much of the noxious gas. It was no use, though. He definitely felt sick from it. He gave Pepper a pleading look and she sharpened slightly at it. She stared at him. The battle itself wasn't taxing him, but apparently having to wave his good wing while his broken one hung useless was. "Banjo, bite the gligar!" Pepper called to her pup, who had a facefull of sand and was digging at his face when the gligar swooped in to strike him again. He used his instincts and the feel of which way the gligar had been headed to spin his head around and open the deadly jaws that were responsible for Punch's broken wing, snapping them closed and trying to get a jawful of wing or leg to drag Scree to the ground. "Punch, use tackle!" Punch waved his wing and cried out, aiming towards Flux and jumping at her with the intent to tackle her again. He was down! The growlithe had a hold of his wing and no matter how much flapping he did he couldn't escape! Panic set in as Scree flailed around. Parallel was quick though, he ordered Scree to turn his flailing into another wing attack and hopefully do some damage while he was there. The trapped gligar did his best, waving his wings at Banjo. Flux was attacked once more by the starly, and though it was only a tackle attack, it dealt some serious damage to the baby slugma. She squeaked as the bird pokemon tackled her head on and made her tumble backwards. As she righted herself, she found the world very disorientated. Her energy was so low she was starting to get dizzy and confused. Sending out another plume of smog she tried to attack again, but as Parallel could see, the poisonous gas was absolutely nowhere near either Banjo or Punch. ~Pepper Dawson~ Banjo yelped as his head was battered by the Gligar and he let go, backing away shaking his head. He yawned again, suddenly so tired the world seemed as if it were spinning. He slowly laid down and closed his eyes, whimpering as he drifted to sleep in the middle of the battle. Punch stumbled, obviously feeling ill. He hunkered down under the wild smog attack and stayed well away from the noxious fumes. Pepper kept a close eye on him, but when he used his wing and tail for balance and readied himself again, she nodded firmly. "Tackle." Punch jumped, although there was enough distance between him and Flux that much of his momentum would be gone by the time he struck the baby slugma, mostly because he couldn't use his wings to keep it up. But her happiness didn't last long unfortunately as the starly came hobbling at her using tackle attack. His momentum might not have been great, but the collision was enough to finally knock out the young fire type. She squeaked, pushed back by the move and then flopped forwards. Her gooey body spread out a little now that she was unconscious and made her look like a bright red puddle! Paralllel bit back a smile as he padded over to gently pick her up. He hugged her before returning her safely to her pokeball. Looking over at Pepper he inclined his head with a small smile, "Your Starly is quite a tough bird."Scree looked crestfallen at the defeat of his partner. Though is was uite a confident pokemon, he was very close with Flux and hated to see her hurt. Now he was on his own! Glaring at Punch he wanted to attack him, but he knew somewhere in his cranium that his wing attack wouldn't be very effective against a flying type... ~Pepper Dawson~ "Tell me about it," Pepper said with an affectionate smile as she looked down at Punch. "He was quite the little pompous featherball when I first caught him...unfortunately Banjo's the reason his wing's broken. Nurse Joy said it should mend well without any lingering stiffness...Banjo was careful." Pepper's button nose wrinkled a little in regret. Banjo's sleeping body jolted as the wings struck him, and there was a few moments when Pepper thought he might wake, but he didn't quite. He seemed to be held asleep, even though he was obviously trying to wake. Banjo growled but remained deeply out. "Punch, use tackle!" Pepper hated to make him use the same move every time, but his speed had been lowered immensely by his broken wing, so he couldn't perform any beautiful dives for quick attack. He wobbled, clearly unsteady on his feet from the poison. He flapped his good wing and hopped once before jumping towards Scree. He knew how to evade the attack. Spreading his wings, he flew into the air and circled around, trying to figure out which pokemon to attack next. though it was the same move again, and the same pokemon too, he chose not to alter his battle plan. Diving for the growlithe he thrust his glowing wings at him, using wing attack once more. Parallel grinned at Pepper, his teeth flashing. She had well trained pokemon, with interesting personalities. And he liked her too, she was down to earth and clearly cared a lot about her pokemon. But he wondered what she truly thought of him? His encounter with Scarlette in the Ruins made it obvious that not everyone here in Cheyenne was fond of pokemorphs. ~Pepper Dawson~ Pepper's eyes narrowed slightly as Punch's tackle missed and he struck the ground on his bad wing. She shook her head. Between the poison that he was dealing with and the fact that this was his first battle since breaking his wing, she had to pull the plug. She grabbed his Pokeball and hit the button on it. "You did well, Punch," she whispered to the Pokeball, kissing it and then giving Parallel a bright smile. She liked him, even if he was slightly odd looking. She hugged the Starly's Pokeball to her. "I didn't want him to risk hurting himself, even by accident," she explained to Parallel. "Besides, it's a little more fair if Banjo and your Scree go one-on-one." Banjo growled in his sleep again, trying to wake up more obviously now that the wings struck him again and the Starly was no longer on the floor with him. He twitched and growled again softly. Once this match is over it would be best if you got him to the Pokemon Centre straight away. Though I'm sure he will be perfectly fine I do apologise for Flux's smog attack, it's the only useful move she knows at the moment."Scree could sense the impending doom of the growlithe waking up. ~Pepper Dawson~ "Punch did really well," Pepper said, smiling and nodding. "He's going to be a strong bird." She looked over at the combatants as the gligar ignored his trainer petulantly and she bit her lip on a smile. When the gligar's wings struck him again, Banjo lunged upward and gave a snarl. ~Pepper Dawson~ "Woah!" Pepper was smiling, even as she looked slightly surprised. "Your Gligar is stubborn. That's really good. He'll be really good in battles as he gets stronger." She bit down on her lower lip and looked at Parallel. She kind of liked him. And it didn't look bad that he was...different. She hoped they could grow to be friends after this battle, even though they'd met in an odd way...kind of like internet dating, now that she thought of it. It made her nose wrinkle, but she wasn't any less interested in being friends. She looked at Banjo and tilted her head thoughtfully. He whined as the barbed tail struck him and he flinched back, baring his teeth in a growl at the Gligar. Still, he stood silent for a few moments, waiting for his trainer to decide what to do. Pepper bit her lower lip. She glanced at Banjo. His bite was really strong, she knew from experience. "Banjo, use ember," she said quietly, although she wasn't as forceful as she had been in the past. Banjo wagged his tail and looked at the Gligar. Although he was stronger, he respected the little Pokémon for bravely taking him on anyway. He decided to honor his opponent with the respect that Scree deserved, so although he was careful to moderate the flame in his mouth to a point where it wouldn't severely harm the Gligar, he'd been doing that all battle...he and Pepper had both learned a bit of moderation from their battle with Punch. Banjo howled and expelled the flames from his mouth, even as he felt the poison seeping into him and harming him some more. He appreciated Pepper's compliments too, he hoped he could train his slightly unruly gligar into a fine fighter. It was quite an enjoyable battle and he hoped to repeat it soon, if the young girl was willing to oblige of course. He hadn't sensed any discomfort from her due to his appearance, which was always a good thing. And if truth be told, he hadn't exactly been a social butterfree since he'd travelled here. He'd been focused on making sure all his pokemon were healthy and well fed so much that he forgot to interact with any of the trainers around here properly. It would be nice to have someone to battle on a regular basis, someone to talk with. A friend. Scree knew it was over. He looked up at the fire pup and knew the end was near. So dramatic for such a little creature! He narrowed his eyes and stood facing his opponent, ready for the last move. He had no energy to dodge it and no strength left to fight back, but he wasn't going to cower in the face of defeat. He'd fought as best he could and if they or Parallel didn't appreciate then they were all fools! The hot flames enveloped him and before he had time to notice they were not at full power, he had fainted. Parallel stretched out a hand with Scree's pokeball grasped in it and returned the bat like pokemon. Looking over at Pepper he flashed her a grin, "That was a good match. Would you like another? Or perhaps some other time?" He was perfectly happy to go to the Pokemon centre with her now and then return for another battle, but he knew many trainers were pursuing gym badges and contest ribbons, so she probably didn't have the time. Either way, he hoped they would stay in touch.
