The sun was setting at her back, bathing everything in a reddish-orange glow as Kazashi rounded the final hill to the lab. Ah, there it was, the fork in the road with the two paths: one to the lab, the other to the Ranger tents.
The young woman sighed with happiness, and not a little bit of tiredness. Finally, she'd made it. That trip across Cheyenne to this place had taken what felt like forever, even with the proper directions and excellent mass transit time. And now, nothing stood in her way to being a proper trainer, nothing but....
...Hold up. What was that doing here?
“DANGER: KEEP OUT,” she read on the hastily prepared sign sitting just off to the right. It sported a bright red arrow still bleeding fresh paint and pointing exactly in the direction of the Labs. Which was her destination, and had been since she started her trek.
What the...? Her jaw dropped, and she read the sign again. Not like the words had changed, but Kaz had to process this.
“Seriously?” Kazashi muttered to no one, then louder, “SERIOUSLY?” No way. This had to be some sort of mistake, or maybe some sort of practical joke. Not when she'd come so far!
Was her mother behind this, somehow? No, it didn't seem like something she'd do. Heck, it wasn't anything her mother would even think to do. The pink-haired girl racked her brain, trying to remember if she'd heard anything regarding the Lab before she'd arrived. Maybe while she'd been having a cup of coffee in the town after getting off the bus...?
I don't remember a thing! No, wait...wasn't there something about some disturbance or other up this way?
Crap. That's what she got for not really paying attention. Kaz couldn't remember. Besides, who'd disturb a Lab anyway? Better to be robbing a bank, if you were looking for a score.
But that was neither here nor there; where did that leave her, if she couldn't go to the Lab and get her starter Pokemon? Her wireframed glasses slid down her nose; she hastily shoved them back into place with a finger and checked the signs again, squinting in the slowly fading light.
What did her uncle say? Oh, right: “Kaz, you have to learn that Plans never survive the first contact with the enemy.” And here came the first one, indeed. She might be held up on her schedule for the first week for gods know how long.
Well, the Ranger tents still appeared to be safe to venture to. No signs saying to keep away from there. Perhaps they might know what'd been put in place for new trainers. Or if not, they could at least give her some pointers on maybe catching her own. Not everyone started their journey in a lab, right?
Adjusting her shoulder bag and wincing at the twinge in her sore muscles, Kazashi turned away from her original destination and headed down the still clear path, wishing she'd had another cup of coffee. When she finally arrived, the first stars were beginning to appear in the sky, and the first lights were coming on in the enclosures. The wind picked up, ruffling Kaz's hair and making the tent fabric snap loudly as she came within range.
“Hello?” she called out. “Anyone out and about?”

" oh, me! i'm here, i am! " she cried, waving her hand enthusiastically as her Pokémon friend loped up to greet the girl. tori herself later came, her face bright with excitement. " you're here for a pokemon, aren't ya? yepper, i knew it! " she giggled loudly, making her fox Pokémon smile in spite of her childish nature. then, when she nuzzled her soft face into the newcomers face, she returned to her own trainers side, nudging her forward. " oh, right! your package. every new trainer needs one after all! " she said brightly, then jogged back to her area, bringing out a couple of bags, stacking them up on top of a picnic table and disappearing happily into the tent. there was a few crashes, some loud, high-pitched squeals of pain, a couple grunts. and a final " wee, this is it! man, those rangers dont know how to put stuff away~ " before coming back out, after her ninetales had poked her face in in distress to see if her trainer was okay. " got them! " she cheered as she put the berries and the pokeballs on the table. she dropped a few berries in, as well as five pokeballs and a gadget that she fiddled with so she knew it would work into the bag, then wrapped it up and shook it. then blushed. " oops. the berries. " she said, then peeked in to make sure they were alright. she smiled. " a-okay! " she said, then smiled widely and handed the woman the bag. " there you are, sorry for all the trouble. i hope you aren't disappointed with what you see here. after all, what with the lab being closed and all, a lot of people are coming here. we're seeming to be running low on supplies. well, pokeballs. but i found a stash of them. so it's okay! " she said, then winked and swayed from side to side with her hands knotted behind her back. then she ran forward and forcefully hugged the woman. " hope you like the stuff, i picked it out myself! and that little pokedex thingy in there, it works too! " she giggled. her ninetales merely stayed behind her, sitting neatly, her tails waving mesmerizing. she smiled warily at her trainers brash, overly friendly actions. though the pokemon startled and moved aside when the girl ran into the tent, then back again with three potions in her arms, her face a violent blush. " i almost forgot the potions! " she said as she stashed them in the bag. " im so sorry! " she said, eyes tearing up at her mistake. “Yes, thank you. I --” Kaz didn't even manage to finish the sentence before the excessively bouncy girl was off again. Despite her confusion, she couldn't help but smile; the girl's mood was irrepressible, and her pokemon partner clearly didn't think anything was amiss. Even when it sounded like half the tent came down for a few seconds there. Thankfully, Tori seemed to emerge with no bumps or bruises, so no harm done.
“By the way, I'm Kazashi. I don't think I caught your name,” she said, as she watched the bag of supplies slowly fill. “Ah, thank you for this. And no, not at all. I'm sure you're all super-busy.” After being handed the hastily but neatly packed bundle, Kaz took out the Pokedex, turned it on, and gazed at it with curiosity. She'd never seen one up close, but according to most trainer guides, it was one of the most important things you could carry on a journey, even ahead of Pokeballs.
“Huh. So you wave this in the direction of a pokemon, and...” She trailed off, turning to the lovely Ninetales that sat there next to her trainer.
“Ninetales. The Fox Pokemon,” a soft voice said from the object's speaker, and the small screen was filled with images and text. Kaz blinked in surprise. “Oh! Voice and text! Very handy. This is great. Thanks!”
Fire type? she mused, glancing at the information as it scrolled past. Though how that even made sense, she had no clue. But that was what her Journey was for, wasn't it? To make sense of it all!
“Any way I can help with that supply problem?” Kaz asked after a moment, as she flipped the 'Dex shut and returned it to the bag. “As I'm heading to the first town anyway, I could take an order for you to the stores th –?” Again, before she could finish, the girl was off again, then zoomed back with one more thing. Ah. Potions.
And then...near-waterworks? What?
“That's okay, that's all right, no need to apologize,” Kazashi said, waving her hands in an attempt to be soothing...and probably utterly failing. Oh dear. She glanced over at the pokemon entreatingly. Hopefully the Ninetales could do better here, as she was more cognizant of her trainer's moods and moments. “It happens, I'm sure, no harm done!”
Casting about for something to distract the poor girl, she came up with the one thing she didn't have yet. “So, now that I have all this, what do we do now – do you take me into the field and we try to capture a Pokemon?”

" alright. m-my names tori. nice to meet you! and about that pokemon. yes, i'll have zergerv... zee help you out there. " she said, then watched as her ninetales licked her face and trotted off into the trees. " no need to follow her, zee likes her privacy. we'll just wait here until she comes back. she's usually fairly quick. " she said. though it was easy to tell she was nervous. the way she was rubbing her wrists was easy enough to notice. she looked away, chewing her lip uneasily, before giving quick glances back in the direction of her pokemon. " so.. what are you going to be when you get older? are you going to be a coordinator, or a breeder? " she asked politely, wringing her hands nervously. " i wanted to be a breeder. but that life just wasn't cut out for me. " she said, then watched for her companion again. and thankfully she was back, nudging along a small deerling in front of her. the pokemon was kicking and screaming. < i gave yuh a warnin' bub. gimme yer money, punk! > it was screaming to tori's pokemon. whereas the ninetales merely widened her jaws, revealing a set of sharp teeth. and behind thos teeth, fire erupted. small coals of ember shot out of her mouth and fell onto the writhing deerling, whom shrieked at the burns and fell quiet. < good, now stay where you are. > zee growled lightly. though her paw rested on its one hoof to prevent it's escape. " here! zee found you a deerling it seems. did you know they change colour according to the season? it's pretty neat. " she said, handing kazashi a pokeball. " just throw it at the pokemon. this one'll be your partner! " she said, then smiled brightly. ::deerling:: deerling level 5 abilities: chlorophyll + sap sipper attacks: basic + synthesis quirk: likes to stick-up people for money, talks like a gangster [/style] [style=padding: 10px;]NOTES HERE. "Mmm. I plan on being a researcher when I finish - no idea how long that's going to be, though." Kazashi chose not to ask about the Ninetales taking off to find a pokemon. She'd thought that it was going to already come, er, prepackaged...but given that this wasn't a lab, it sort of made sense. "Now, about that..." There was a commotion in the woods ahead of them, and the trainer-to-be's eyebrow raised as the fox Pokemon emerged herding a...was that a deer? Kaz hadn't seen the like before. She had to admit, it was kind of cute, all pink with white dots and the first hints of antlers...but then the thing bleated. Oh my. She wasn't sure what it was saying, but whatever it was saying didn't sound like it was language for the dinner table. Kazashi did make a mental note that it *really* didn't like fire, though. Rummaging back through the bundle, she retrieved the pokedex, and pointed it at the angry little creature. " Deerling. The Season pokemon." A quick glance at the data showed that it was a grass-type. But...but...deer eat grass, how on earth.... "I swear. Sometimes the world is just waiting for me to get cocky," she muttered, and flung the pokeball at the Deerling. She'd figure it out when she had time to go over what the pokedex said.

The pokeball clicked shut and the Ranger was happy to see it do so, at least now she had done her job and had given the trainer a great pokemon in the long run. Whatever had happened earlier was over, however Tori knew that things wouldn't go any better had she done it herself. At least her ninetales was happy with what she had done. Waving to the trainer after the deerling was suddenly caught and it was rather successful too. Tori then forgot why she had handed the trainer a pokeball, but decided this was for the best. Her ninetales just suddenly smirked softly as she licked her trainers hand. "Congratulations you now have your first pokemon and can go on to the first route, enjoy!" was all she said as the deerling was now pawned off to the trainer.
::rangerf:: ::ninetales:: Deerling caught!
