As Reese approached a fork in the road, he began to inspect the sign that stood there, humbly offering directions to any passerby who may have needed them. It appeared that one road led to the Pokémon Lab, and the other road led to the Ranger Station. During his time here, he had heard a few things about how new trainers in the Cheyenne region have a much larger array of options in obtaining their starter Pokémon than most other regions provide. The Ranger Station route certainly seemed interesting, but his mind had been made up long before this sign would suggest the idea one last time. Although not one for blindly following tradition, Reese knew that he wanted the beginning of his Pokémon adventure to begin as it should have back then. He decisively turned upon his heels and began walking down the road toward the lab.
Upon taking a cursory glance toward the sky, he quickly decided that it wouldn't kill the weather to be a little bit nicer for this occasion. Clouds covered the sky as far as he could see, with a few patches of clear sky to provide a bit of sunlight here and there. He shrugged it off and continued down the path. It could've been worse. It could've been raining. As far as he could recall, he did not own an umbrella.
With the lab in sight, the man began to ponder what sort of Pokémon were offered here. He really hadn't looked into finding out which Pokémon were in store at the lab, and he tried not to spend too much time thinking about what sort he'd want. He figured it was best to wait and see what his choices were rather than to get his hopes up about a particular type of Pokémon, only to be left disappointed. But now, practically too late--as usual--he realized that maybe being a bit prepared wouldn't have been the worst idea in the world. Well, if the lab didn't have anything that looked favorable, he could always take a walk down to the Ranger Station.
Before he knew it, he had arrived at the front doors of his destination. So this was the Cheyenne Pokémon Laboratory. It wasn't entirely what he expected, but then again, he wasn't really sure what to expect in the first place. He took a breath, the moment he'd been waiting for finally upon him, grabbed the handle of the door, and cautiously pulled it open. He took a quick peek inside before entering to survey the activity of the building and found that it seemed lively enough. If nothing else, the lights were on, and that was good enough for him.
"Hello?" he asked, seemingly to the interior of the lab itself, as he took a step inside and let the door close behind him. "Excuse me,"--at this point, he realized that he wasn't completely sure who he was excusing himself to; but the words had already escaped him and it was too late to stop now--"I'm here to collect my first Pokémon." There was a hint of uncertainty in his voice, as though he was unsure if the building he had just walked into was, in fact, the Pokémon Lab as the sign out front had advertised. As Reese spoke, his eyes flew across the ceiling and then skated upon the floor three feet in front of him. He continued to inspect the lab, waiting for someone to pop out and greet him.
He now wished that there had simply been a service bell he could've rung. It probably would've spared him from having to sound like an idiot.

►Professor Winter◄::cyndaquil:: ::voltorb:: ::rhyhorn:: Within the lab, Professor Winter had been working on a very important project when suddenly the power had gone out. It was a rather strange occurrence, since the weather outside had been quite lovely. Blue painted skies and the marshmallow shaped clouds above hinted that the weather had most certainly not been the cause. Everything was neat and orderly within the lab, so his only conclusion was that something was amiss near the Ranger Station, where the lab's power supply was kept. Needing immediate power to continue his research, he fumbled through the darkness to pull out a few Pokemon to assist him. The pictures of each Pokemon was quite easy to see, plus he memorized where each Pokemon was located in his massive storage of Pokeballs. Pulling out exactly three, he released them one by one, as they all shook their heads in annoyance from the sudden flash of light from the Pokeball, then having to adjust to the great darkness. The first was a Cyndaquil, who looked around quite nervously at his surroundings. Holding in his breath, he unleashed the flames on his back, illuminating the area. "Hello?" Oh dear. The other two Pokemon were quickly made visible; A Voltorb and a Rhyhorn. Both had their purposes in his plan. The Voltorb could fuel the power for the lab, while Rhyhorn could make things less dangerous with her lightning rod. "I'm terribly sorry, you are in the right place, but the power seems to have gone out. Cyndaquil, could you follow me?" Winter looked down at the frightened fire type, giving him a comforting smile. Giving a humble nod, the fire type followed the Professor as they went to greet the trainer. "I can easily pick out your first Pokemon and get your starter pack...but you'll have to be patient through this dark spell." He explained, squinting his eyes to get a better look at the trainer. Perhaps if the blinds were open, there would be more light as well. Ah, he'd have to get to that soon.

It wasn't long at all before his quizzical statement was met with response from an eerily bodiless voice. In the voice's defense, any sound in this dim lighting would've been eerie. The voice was soon followed by the appearance of what Reese could only assume to be its source. The figure of a man appeared to be making his way toward the trainer-to-be with a small fire-type Pokémon at his side, who was the only source of light at the moment. It appeared to be a Cyndaquil, and more than likely was, but Reese hadn't seen a real one in quite some time. With the lab swallowed in darkness, even the little Cyndaquil's ability to generate fire would prove to be very helpful. Situations like these really had a tendency to illustrate how nice it was to have such creatures around.
The man who had appeared with the fire Pokémon (who Reese suspected was perhaps the professor of this lab, or at the very least an assistant to the professor--it was hard to be completely sure given the lighting) went on to explain that while this was indeed the place to receive the necessary items for beginning trainers, but obviously the whole power-outage thing was going to take priority at the moment. It would probably be a hassle to try to get everything together with the current circumstances.
"Oh, that's no problem," Reese replied. There was a slight hint of relief in his voice, as though he was just happy that he had managed to find the right place. "Oh! My name is Reese Donovan, by the way. Um... if there's anything I can do to help out with the power in the mean time, I'd be more than happy to."
Now that he had thought of it, it was kind of surprising that the power would've gone out. The weather wasn't very impressive, but it certainly wasn't bad enough to warrant a power-outage. Whatever the cause, Reese had already decided that, since he was here and they probably weren't going to be doing much without power at the lab, he'd do his best to make himself useful.

"Donovan? No relation to the Museum founder, I assume?" Professor Winter asked, quite startled at the familiar name. He was on good terms with that man, and hadn't been aware of any of his relatives coming in for their first Pokémon. Otherwise he would've been much more prepared...but nonetheless, they both had to make do in this situation.
"I'm the Professor of this Region...Professor Winters. I suppose that the only way we can tolerate this is to get the emergency supply up and running." The Professor explained, motioning over to the two Pokémon that were standing in front of a wall with a small opening in it. "If you could, watch over them while I open up some of the blinds. Make sure that Voltorb uses Charge on the electrical supply, and stay behind Rhyhorn." He motioned to each Pokémon as he said their names, the Cyndaquil making a cute bob of his head after each introduction.
"Rhyhorn will be able to protect you from any electrical blast. It's her ability." He explained, then before long he quickly scuttled off to the farthest area of the lab, working on raising all of these blasted blinds. The Cyndaquil remained near Reese as a light source, and would follow him wherever he chose to go. The Voltorb and Rhyhorn looked at Reese expectantly, waiting for his command.

"No..." Reese responded, slightly hesitant about whether or not he was forgetting a particular relative. Was he related to someone who founded a museum? He supposed it wasn't entirely impossible, and decided it was something he'd maybe look into later. "Not that I'm aware of, anyway."
Reese was pleased to hear the man in the lab coat introduce himself as Professor Winters. It wasn't often that he'd meet someone as prestigious as a certified Pokémon Professor. And now it appeared that the professor would be temporarily entrusting three of his Pokémon to Reese's care. This was certainly the time to attempt to leave a good impression on the man. Despite his delight at all of this, he inwardly formed a small frown when Professor Winters continued and asked the boy to actually take command of the three Pokémon while he attended other matters. It certainly wasn't that Reese felt incapable of accomplishing the task, but this was a test he wasn't entirely expecting. Even though he had been put on the spot, he knew he couldn't let the professor down. "Sure, I can take care of that. No problem." As Reese spoke with confidence, he looked over the three creatures that had been left to him. He called Cyndaquil to his side to provide adequate lighting, and the Rhyhorn and Voltorb followed close behind as the group made their way to the power supply.
The four of them managed to find their destination without much trouble (or rather, Reese managed to find it with the three Pokémon pointing him in the right direction), and they quickly set to work. With Voltorb in place, Reese and Cyndaquil took cover behind the Rhyhorn, as Professor Winters had instructed.
"Everyone ready?" Reese asked, prepared to get this operation under way. The three Pokémon responded positively, each with determination in their voice. "Alright, then. Voltorb, use Charge on the power supply!" Almost as though pulling the trigger of a gun, the Voltorb reacted immediately to the verbal command. For just a second, the electric Pokémon glowed a brilliant white flash before a shot of what appeared to be lightning sprang forth from his body toward the power supply. Sparks flew from the machine, giving off quiet pops and crackles as the raw energy surged into its circuits.
A bolt of electricity flew out from the crossfire and hurtled toward Reese and Cyndaquil, letting out a high-pitched scream as it ripped through the air. With the blink of an eye, Rhyhorn leaped into the bolt's path to intercept it, grounding itself in a defensive position to absorb any recoil that would be shot through his thick body. The electricity went for the rock Pokémon's horn as though magnetized to it and struck with a loud crack. The bolt dissipated upon contact, sending tiny little arches of lightning across the surface of Rhyhorn's hide. Rhyhorn looked back at the two he had protected, and with a slightly simmering horn gave a smile to see that they were both safe.
As Voltorb was nearing the end of his Charge, the generator began making strange noises. Was the mission successful? Had the power supply been starting up?
"Alright, Voltorb, I think that might be enough." As he called out to Voltorb, he surveyed the lights in the lab to see whether or not it really had been enough. Between Cyndaquil's flame and the light show that had just been put on, however, it was difficult to tell at the time whether or not the power supply was starting. As the group waited to survey the effectiveness of their work, Reese wondered how far Professor Winters's had progressed with the blinds. "We can always take another crack at it, but we shouldn't juice it up too much in case we overload it." To tell the truth, he wasn't even entirely sure that that was something he'd have to worry about. But not risking that chance sounded like a pretty good idea.

::CYNDAQUIL:: ::VOLTORB:: ::RHYHORN::
With the blinds open and the emergency generator up and running, all of the lights started to spark up from the extra juice. Machines started to gently hum as the power seeped into them, and Professor Winter couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. So the power wasn't as strong as it could have been, but he wasn't expecting much from a level 5 Voltorb. Plus it was the emergency supply, and that tended to let out small doses of energy in order to conserve it.
"Thank you, Reese. I think the Lab will be fine for the time being. I can see that already you have a knack with Pokemon." The Professor gave Reese a sincere smile, showing that he meant what he said. He glanced around the room idly, as if making sure nothing was damaged when he wasn't looking. Ah! The Starter Pack!
The Professor walked over to the back of the room and pulled out one of the Starter Packs, knowing that it would come in handy when Reese left for the first Route. "Here you are, a Starter Pack. Now, for choosing your first Pokemon..." He pointed over to the list on the wall, which showed all of the possible Starter Pokemon. The Cyndaquil cheered once it was bright again, and immediately ran over to Professor Winter to give his legs a strong hug. The Rhyhorn exchanged relieved looks with the Voltorb, just glad to help out.
