Route One was a beautiful location. Ren wasn't really noticing any of that, except that it was a bit damper here thanks to the creek that she was walking alongside, and so the dust didn't flutter up into her nose as easily as it had on the path over to here.
A large rock caught her eyesight, lurking just out of the water, and she made her way over to it, using it as a seat. She enlarged the pokeball that held her starter with one hand, gazing at it for a moment with a thoughtful look, before releasing it by pressing the button with her thumb, snapping the pokeball back shut once the light had formed into the purple pokemon's shape on the creek bed in front of her.
The skorupi, for her part, didn't really like the location all that much. She preferred dry, sandy, hot areas, and the only requirement this place fit was that it was a bearable temperature-though in her opinion it wouldn't be a bad thing if it were quite a bit hotter. She looked up to see her trainer sitting on the rock before her, mentally approving of her actions. If she had to be subservient to somebody, she would rather it be someone who had an idea of how to be a leader-by sitting herself above skorupi's level, her trainer had shown her dominance.
Of course, Ren herself didn't know that. She'd just needed a breather and had decided to take the time to meet the pokemon she had decided to call Smollbur. "My name is Ren. I trust you don't object to the name Smollbur?" She could change it if the skorupi detested it, but it didn't seem to be that bad. It kind of fit the quiet pokemon.
Smollbur shifted away from the running water a bit, uncomfortable with having it so close. She couldn't swim after all, despite the fact that it was unlikely that the water was deep enough to have been a problem anyways. <No, I do not mind that name...Ren.> She was caught a bit off guard by the name-she'd expected to be required to call her trainer, to call Ren, something...Oh, something like Master.
"That's good." Unsure about what to do now she stared at the water, wondering what her next action ought to be. Perhaps she should just focus on training Smollbur, or maybe she should just head for the next town. What was it's name again?

All around the Skorupi and her trainer, Pokemon went about their daily business, and several things were going on at once. In one direction, there was a loud squabbling, almost as if a couple, or perhaps several Pokemon, were fighting over something. There were no pained shrieks added into the mix, so it was quite obvious that no Pokemon were in any particular danger yet, and that it was only a daily argument between rivals, or otherwise.
To the immediate left, something scampered like lightning up the base of a tree, vanishing with the wave of a tail into the branches. The leaves quivered, hinting to the fact that the Pokemon was hiding just out of sight. It would be possible to gain it's attention if one were interested.
From behind, a Hoppip was bounding up the path, clutching it's prize of an Oran Berry tightly. It had went and found this berry all on it's own, and now it was heading to the stream to show it off to friends. However, unbenounced to the cheerful Pokemon, the dark shadow of a bird Pokemon passed overhead...
Investigate any of these areas, or move on?

As she sat there, Ren gradually began to become aware of the surrounding activities of the pokemon Off to one side it sounded like an argument was going on, and she immediately decided against going in that direction. It sounded like more than two pokemon were involved, and she wasn't sure Smollbur could handle that many just yet. She preferred to err on the side of caution.
A quick movement to her left let her glimpse something running up one of the many trees, too fast for her to properly get an idea of what it was. It still lurked near in the lower branches though, if the slight movement of those branches were any kind of hint.
She would go that way then. Standing up she gestured over to the tree, "Let's go see what that was." She remained completely oblivious to the scene behind her, not even bothering to turn and look.
Smollbur glanced at the hoppip, though she too missed the shadow. Her attention was soon fully back on Ren and she had followed her over to the base of the tree, looking up much the same way Ren was.
They stood there for a few moments, not entirely sure what to do. Finally Ren stood on tip-toe to reach one of the branches and shook it while talking, "Hey. Come on out." Maybe it would be possible to capture this pokemon? She hadn't really thought past getting her starter...

A sandshrew was in the tree, munching on a berry he'd located in the boughs, and looked down at the human that was shaking the branch below it. The slight quivering of the rest of the tree caused the shrew to lose his balance a bit, but he stayed put on the branch.
<What do you want?> Squeaked the little shrew in a high-pitched, adorable voice. It was like something out of a cartoon.

Smollbur was a bit taken aback by the pitch of the voice. It was not what she had been expecting to say the least. When she looked at her trainer she couldn't figure out if Ren had been affected similarly, because she looked to have been oblivious to it.
She really ought to start thinking ahead before she did things. For a moment she just stood there, hand still on the branch although she wasn't shaking it anymore, contemplating what she did want. Finally she made a decision, "Would you care for a battle?" That was something trainers did. So perhaps she wouldn't seem too out of place if she asked for one.
If she looked just right, she could see the sandshrew between the leaves and she could easily picture the silly sounding voice coming from him. He was kind of like a teddy bear. She bet if a little kid had captured him, that little kid would hug him at night.

As the trainer deliberated on the simple answer to his simple question, the Sandhrew glanced at his wrist, doing what he had seen humans do when they were impatient. He never really understood why they did that, but it certainly got the meaning across to other humans. He tapped his foot against the branch impatiently, making the leaves crunch as they brushed against each other noisily.
<A battle? Well, why not. I just had a snack though, so let's start with a warm up.> He explained, slowly sliding down the tree in fear of losing his grip. Honestly, it was always so much easier to climb the darn things than to go down them.
Once he made his way down, he looked at the Skorupi uncertainly. Would this be a good opponent to fight? He rubbed his chin thoughtfully, looking the poison type over. Well, maybe. The Sandshrew was willing to give them the first move though, and watched them expectantly.

Ren wondered where the sandshrew had gotten the habit of miming a watch. She had never seen a pokemon wearing a watch, and the sandshrew certainly wasn't. In fact, she almost felt a bit...offended? It hadn't taken her that long to come to a decision! Had it?
None-the-less she was happy when he accepted, and stepped back as he made his way cautiously down the tree. She wasn't sure what a ground type had been doing in the tree in the first place, except that she supposed it was easier to hide from predators or berry thieves. "Great!"
Smollbur settled herself in front of her trainer, determined to prove her worth to her trainer. Besides, she had to make sure people remembered that skorupi were dangerous pokemon! They were the terrors of the desert! Even if she was a bit far from a desert right now...Her attention was brought back to the battle when Ren called out her attack combo.
"Smollbur, use leer and follow it up with a bite attack!" Ren watched as her pokemon did just that, attempting to frighten the sandshrew with a stare before moving in with her jaws open, ready to bite down on whatever she could.

::sandshrew:: Pkmn battle ! Sandshrew felt a chill run down his spine at the sight of that already-frightening insect's fierce stare, held in place for a second. Perhaps this wasn't such a good idea, a thought breezed through his mind.
Faltering caused him to fall victim to the scorpion's twin jaws. The two sharp protrusions entered the yellow flesh of his arm, pinching his hard skin painfully. He wrenched his limb out of the Skorupi's jaws, then took advantage of the small distance between them and took action. His arm rose, then fell swiftly towards Smollbur's face as the Sandshrew executed a scratch.

Smollbur attempted to scuttle backwards to avoid the attack, but only succeeded in taking a step or two before the sandshrew's claws raked across her face, eliciting a series of clicking noises of pain. Then she was out of range, jaws opening and shutting in impatience.
Ren didn't make her wait for long, deciding to attempt to further their advantage, "Use poison sting!" She was surprised to find that she enjoyed battling. Maybe it was just that it got her competitive spirit to wake up-she wanted to win for once. Perhaps it was simply that she just enjoyed it. Whatever the case, she was glad that she didn't hate it. That would have made being a trainer pretty much unbearable.
Shaking off the scratch attack once more, Smollbur closed in again, raising her tail up and then aiming it down in front of her, attempting to sink the spines at the end of the tail into the sandshrew just far enough to inject the poison that was stored in them.

::sandshrew:: Pkmn battle ! Sandshrew felt her claws connect with the Skorupi's face, pleasing him greatly. He was about to scramble away from the scorpion before she could land another attack - however, this was not the case.
He turned his head to see that Smollbur's tail was angled toward him. A shrill of fear exited his throat, but he managed to avoid the attack by rolling out of the way just before the sharp-looking tail descended down to him. His roll brought him to the side of the scorpion, at the sight of which the shrew raised his claw to slash it down the insect's side.
