Though some girls would shriek and run at the sight of a Zubat, Autumn was quite pleased with her new Pokémon as she headed toward the first route, smiling the entire time. She had always been tomboyish, growing up with a bunch of brothers and all, and so it took more than a creepy batlike Pokémon to scare her. Spiders didn't scare her, either. In fact, she liked these types the best, which was why the Zubat was such a good companion for her.
Pulling out the Zubat's ball, she jumped slightly in shock and dropped it when it sparked. This caused the ball to land on the capsule's button, therefore releasing the Pokémon inside. Obviously not pleased with her by any means, her new companion glared up at her and stretched his wings. <Gee,> he said icily, <thanks.>
Blushing a little in embarrassment, she quickly mumbled an apology. "But we're still partners, and so you need a name! I think I'll call you... Acerbus."
<Come again?> the bat asked sourly.
"Acerbus," she repeated, then elaborated. "It means bitter, dark, or gloomy."
<Touche.>

Ack! Ew ew ew! He'd fallen into Bidoof shit and now was a distinctive muddy brown. Not to mention he'd smelled nicer in his time. Ugh. Those beavers had to be more careful about where they left their... droppings. He'd been desperately searching for some shallow water to bathe in since then, with no luck. But there was a Trainer ahead. perhaps she would be of some help. >Excuse me miss? Can you tell me where the nearest pond is?< he asked, looking up at the Trainer with large, innocent eyes, unaware of how unattractive his new stench made him. ::caterpie::

Oh dear god, what was that stench? Autumn gagged slightly and covered her mouth and nose, stomach turning violently as the scent of something foul attacked her senses. She was so focused on the stench that she didn't really hear what the poor Caterpie said, and she glanced hopefully at her Pokémon. He didn't have a nose, nor did he have eyes, but he could certainly understand words. Maybe he'd be able to translate? She could understand Pokemon, but this was a bit of a situation.
<I think the stinking bug wants a battle,> he sneered, obviously eager to stretch his wings and get some training done. Autumn glanced at him quizzically, sure that the Caterpie didn't look too threatening.
"Ace," she started, as she had decided this would be his nickname, "I really don't think-"
But Ace had already gave a few strong beats of his webbed wings, steadying himself before pinpointing the location of the bug Pokémon and letting out a loud screech, supersonic waves emanating from him. Autumn winced slightly, but it did not affect her too greatly, seeing as the attack was not meant for her. That poor Bug Pokémon! But still, there was nothing she could do. Acerbus clearly had a mind and a personality of his own.

The poor Caterpie was confused now! Walking a bit zig zaged now he crawled in certain way. <Durr> His mind was barely working now. Some scuttlebutt had gotten out and said that he was truculent . Well that just went over well with the ladies so he thought, of why not come out into this world! He was agog at first, having everyone think he was some tough Caterpie but then it died down and he was gonna forfend that from happening....which got him in this mess! Of course, he left the safety of his own home to come into this weird route to prove them wrong. Because he was malleable his friends got him out into this stupid place. Trying to shake it off he went for a Tackle, but he kinda went the wrong way. How embarrassing! Is confused! Used Tackle! (missed)

Autumn covered her mouth, a little worried for the poor Pokemon, when she noticed that it seemed to be acting rather oddly. "Oh, Ace, what did you do?" she scolded him, though it wasn't like the bat paid her any attention. Their relationship was certainly set to be an odd one, indeed. Perhaps he would become more obedient with time, and he was certainly loyal enough not to go rushing off, but even still. She was a little exasperated, but she admired the little Zubat for his courage. What was it that he evolved into? She really didn't know, but she hoped it didn't change him completely.
Ace, meanwhile, was completely ignoring Autumn, his attention focused fully on the battle he was now having with Caterpie. He sneered arrogantly when the bug Pokemon missed. <Is that really the best you've got?> he taunted. The Pokemon had not yet hurt him, and so Leech Life was somewhat pointless, but it was the only other offensive move he knew.
That in mind, the Zubat swooped toward the Caterpie and attempted to latch his fangs into the bug's flesh, in order to drain nutrients from him. Sort of like a vampire bat.
Erm... gross?

The Caterpie was not agog at all. The poor thing was soon bit by the bat. Yelling in pain he staggered back a bit. Shaking his head he tried to see where it was. Going for a slow but strong Tackle he went in. Though he wasn't sure which Zubat to hit, he was seeing lots of them!

"Ace, look o-"
But the words died on her lips. In his egotistical gloating, the bat Pokemon was too distracted by himself to focus on his opponent, and he didn't manage to dodge away from the Tackle. It didn't manage to hit him back too far, but it certainly surprised him into taking the battle a little more seriously. Alright, so maybe the Caterpie wasn't just some stupid bug, after all.
"Ace, use Leech Life again!" Autumn said, when he looked a little downhearted. Apparently, his ego was easily bruised. Maybe that was when it was time for her to step in, when he thought he was going to fail. "I know you can beat that stupid bug!"
Alright, so she still felt bad for the Caterpie, and calling it stupid felt a little harsh. But it had hurt Acerbus, and she wasn't going to let that slide.
Ace glanced at her quizzically, not having expected her support. But now that he had it, the bat Pokemon gave a grim nod and flapped his webbed wings, steadying himself before diving at the Bug Pokemon to latch on again.

Stupid bug? The words made Caterpie's ego sting, and tears pricked at his eyes before he hastily blinked them away. First he had been rejected because of his new smell, and now his own self defense was making others hate him. Scuttlebutt said Trainers had been unpleasant lately, but Caterpie had hoped different. Alas, it seemed he had been wrong. Feeling the life suctioned from his frail form, Caterpie squeaked in fear and pain as the sight of his own blood made him feel a painful rush of clarity that made his head ache with a pulsing, unrelenting pain that made him groan inwardly. However. the clarity was enough to set his vision right, along with his mind. Even though his moveset was far from malleable, he hoped that his Tackle would do a little more damage as he threw his tiny body at the bat. ::caterpie:: Caterpie used Tackle. [/B]

Oh goodness, was it going to cry? Autumn's stomach twisted with pity. She didn't think that she could finish this battle, or in the very least, she couldn't continue to harass the Caterpie in such a way. "Ace, stop it!" she begged her Zubat, and he was so shocked that he actually did, barely even noticing the pain of being Tackled backward. His blood was alive with the lust for battle, and she wanted him to stop?
<Are you nuts?> he challenged his trainer shamelessly. <I got this in the bag, don't worry about me, Autumn!> Where had he learned her name, anyways? She must have mentioned it before they'd reached the route. At any rate, he clearly misjudged the reason she wanted him to stop, for she shook her head. "I'm not worrying about you!"
<Then we have nothing else to say to one another!> And without another word, he turned to the Caterpie and let out a few Supersonic waves, just to spite her.

Caterpie was thrown into a state of truculent for the second time in as many minutes. Mouth opening and closing as multiple Zubats appeared in his blurred vision, he leapt forward, a disgusting stench trailing behind him as he lowered his head for maximum damage. Unfortunately, the little worm never made contact with Zubat flesh, instead hitting the much harder surface of a tree. Falling to the ground as tears of humiliation and pain trickled down his cheeks, he forfended consciousness. ::caterpie:: Caterpie has fainted. Acerbus gains a level. [/I]

Autumn felt bad for the poor little bug when it was thrown into a tree, watching as it lost consciousness. Ace seemed quite proud of himself, however, for he was flapping around and doing little flips in the air, pleased. <Did you see that, Autumn?> he bragged, stopping mid-flip to glance at her. <I totally beat that stupid bug! I totally did it!>
She couldn't help but smile a little at his excitement, shaking her head as she pulled out a Pokeball. "That stupid bug is about to become your 'stupid' teammate," she chuckled, ignoring his shocked gasp as she tossed the little red sphere. Butterfree was a beautiful Pokemon, and she really wanted one. But not for it's beauty. No, she'd prefer a Beedrill with Poison Sting - she just needed more Pokemon to travel with.

- The Pokeball sparked unnaturally as it was thrown in the air, raising upward like an arc before descending upon the Caterpie's hip. Opening up like the mouth of a monster, the bug type was faintly aware of the sphere's presence. It easily sucked him inside, seeing that he only had the power of a worm, and he hardly put up a fight.
- Even if he did, just by moving he would've received a nasty shock from the Pokeball. That simply was not worth it. He sighed in defeat as the Pokeball stopped rocking, with him still trapped inside. Maybe if he had been a stronger species, he would've been able to escape. Instead, even a defective Pokemon was able to keep him secured in this prison.

Smiling brightly as the Pokeball gave a quiet ding, and completely ignoring Ace's wounded expression, she picked up the ball, shrieking and nearly dropping it when it shocked her hand. "Ouch!" the femme exclaimed, jerking her hand back, but luckily catching the ball with the other one before it could drop to the ground. Stupid electrical malfunctions! She was just lucky she was on a route, rather than in town. Even still, what would happen if her Pokemon were hurt? She'd probably need to wait a while for the Pokemon Center to heal them properly. Sighing, she shrugged. Oh well. They'd just have to make do with what they had.
Mood brightening, as it was hard to keep her down for very long, she pressed the button on the sparking ball before returning it to her waist. Out came the Caterpie, a little dazed from being shocked, and still looking quite worse for wear. Pulling out one of the potions from her bag, she sprayed it over his worm-like body and smiled. "I'm sorry if we hurt you. Welcome to the team, Ventus!"
Caterpie - Ventus, now - blinked at her. <V-Ventus?> he repeated uncertainly.
Autumn grinned. "It means wind! Because one day, you'll be a graceful Butterfree that can ride the winds!"
<Right now, you're just a pain in the ass,> Ace muttered under his breath.

<Oh, that thing will always just be a pain in the ass,> came a lazy voice. Curled up in the tree whose branch the Caterpie had tumbled was a rather small purple snake, curled loosely around some of the smaller twigs. <I’m just glad I no longer have to deal with it. I swear, I’ve tried to eat that stupid bug about five times now, but it keeps inching away. And into poop.> The Ekans extracted a thin pink tongue in what may have been a sigh. <I really just can’t win, can I?>
Golden eyes with narrow black slits for pupils looked down at the trio beneath him. He hadn’t exactly planned on making his presence known -- he was quite small compared to the rest of his species, after all, and was not keen on becoming a meal -- but he simply couldn’t resist after the Zubat’s comment.

"Huh?" Autumn's voice was soft with surprise and confusion as she glanced around for the source of the noise. Ace was already turned toward the snake, having used his echolocation skills to find out where the presence of another was coming from. Honestly, humans could be so dim sometimes. He flicked Autumn on the side of the head with his wing and gestured toward their reptilian companion. "Oh!" she said in surprised.
Ventus, meanwhile, gave a terrified shriek and hid behind Autumn's leg. <He's gunna eat me!> the Caterpie cried shrilly in fear, obviously not taking into account that he had a more than able trainer capable of protecting him.
However, Autumn wasn't paying much attention to the Caterpie behind her. Attention fixated on the snake, she was admiring the alluring purple of it's skin, the golden gleam of it's eyes as it lounged lazily in it's tree. "I'm sure you'll manage to catch a Caterpie some day," she told the snake optimistically. "I mean, not this one, but... you look pretty tough!" Sure, he was small, but Autumn thought he looked cool.

<Oh, I don’t doubt that I will,> the snake replied, his eyes focusing on the trainer rather than the tasty morsel whimpering beside her. Said tasty morsel still had manure smeared across his body, after all. It made the Ekans slightly ill. As for the praise given to him by the girl? He heard, and it pleased him. Not like he would show his approval or anything. That would make things quite boring, wouldn’t it?
Slithering down the tree, wrapping its thin body into the crevices of the bark so as to grip the trunk, the Ekans made its way to the ground. He generally preferred sticking to the tree, but his main target in this particular one was gone. It was time to move on. <I do wish you luck. As for me? I do suppose I should find something else to eat.> There was another flick of the tongue, another sigh. So much effort, all for a bite to satisfy his hunger. Being a trainer’s Pokémon really would be easier. He began to slither away, though his movements were slow, as if requesting the girl to stop him from leaving. Or the small snake was just lazy.
Ekans is leaving. Sort of. Interfere? [/size]

Autumn grinned at the Ekans, pleased with it's self-confidence. What an admirable Pokemon. Alright, so a girl that didn't shriek and run at the sight of a snake was a sort of rare occurence, but hey! She liked Pokemon that were considered out of her element. Growing up in a family of brothers, she'd always sort of had to prove herself as one of the boys. And so when they'd went snake-searching or toad-catching, she'd tagged along and tried not to make faces when they caught something particularly slimy. As a result, she now adored the Pokemon.
Noticing that his departure was rather slow, Autumn got a bit of an idea into her head. Maybe he'd like some assistance? Maybe she could even convince him to join her! She rather admired the slightly-undersized Ekans, and if she could make him her partner, she'd raise him to be a mighty Pokemon some day! "Hey, wait!" she called, mentally crossing her fingers and hoping that he would. "Erm, maybe I could help! Find you some food, that is..." She cleared her throat, gaining confidence, before pressing onward. "If you'd want to come with us, Ace, Vent and I would be able to help you get food a lot faster, and you wouldn't be stuck going hungry if most things get away!" It was a pretty tempting offer, right? She sure hoped so.

Ah, good. His lack of conviction clearly got her attention. Or she just wanted him to stick around and was simply desperate for his presence. This latter idea pleased the Ekans quite sufficiently, particularly the girl’s comment about helping him find food. That was perfect. Trainers were, he had heard, a fine source of both entertainment and food. Not having to constantly be on the lookout for predators larger than himself was a nice idea, as well. Sticking around would be wonderful! Whether or not he actually wanted to join the party, though? Well, he’d have to see just how good this girl was, first. Beating a Caterpie was nothing.
<I suppose that’s an option,> he replied, stopping and glancing back towards the girl. <Though I would rather have something to eat before being confined inside one of those balls.> With his conditions stated, the snake Pokemon slithered around to look at his potential traveling buddies.

Autumn had to hold in a shout of victorious excitement when the Ekans stated his agreement, however partial, to her request. And of course, seeing as she'd offered to help him find food anyways, his terms were of no problem to her. She felt a little bad causing the death of whatever rodent, bird, or bug caught their attention first, but hey. That snake was going to be in her party, and she was bent-set on this fact. They were bound to get eaten anyways, right? And so, with that flawed logic, the girl nodded enthusiastically. "Of course!" she beamed. "We can start looking right away!"
True to those words, both of her Pokemon started scouting the route along with her, Ventus merely doing it for the sake of not being eaten himself. He didn't appreciate the idea of sending a fellow bug to it's death but hey... a fellow's gotta survive, right?

::ekans:: ::whismur:: Pokemon encounter ! Ekans nodded toward the friendly human, mouth watering already. <Very good. I'll start looking, then.> Announced the snake, slithering forward and poking his tongue in and out of his mouth to catch scent of prey.
Enter: Whismur and Shinx
It wasn't very long before a foolish pokemon wandered in their path - a panicking Whismur, in fact - followed by a famished-looking Shinx. The latter took one look at the congregation of pokemon and the human, however, and quickly fled in fear. The prey was getting too difficult to catch anyways, and that Ekans would probably benefit from it.
Shinx fled.
Ekans had caught the stench of the coming Whismur a few moments before said piglet had hopped out of the bushes; thus, he was ready to strike when the time came. He launched his serpentine body forward, wrapping his muscular purple body around the unfortunate Piglet in order to hold it steady. <Noo! There's more than one!? I'll die! I'll die!> Screeched the panicking Whismur.
<Let's make this quick,> Hissed the Ekans, wincing from the outcry that the noisy pig was causing.
