s i e r r a c a t a l y n n Sierra's face bore the slightest hint of a grin as she excitedly watched the battle continue to play out. Her trusty weasel had practically flown through the battle, and despite being the lowest level of all four fighters his health was still in good shape. Seryl looked just as strong, barely needing to catch his breath after ramming his hard head into the soft, pink target.
Yet despite these two strong attacks the pokemon still hadn't dropped. It was for this reason that the young, dark-haired girl watched the other's lips for the next command, but rather than an attack it was a command for her remaining pokemon to return inside its ball. Surprise, then relief filled her as she realized that she'd won the battle.
As the girl looked up at Roxie's expression, however, these emotions were replaced with a bit of dread and guilt. Not an iota of joy or even complacency was borne on that face. As the girl's venomous voice came forth Sierra was even more remorseful.
Roxie began to leave, and that's when Sierra reached and brought out the necklace she'd placed into her purse. She stared down at the dirty, yet shining jewels for a little bit until she decided to obey her moral obligation. The girl had fought hard for the necklace and she deserved it more than she did. Quickly she raised her head again, parting her lips to speak, but the girl was long gone.
The girl stood there a while, the guilt lingering for a little while longer, until she dissapointedly decided to keep going along. The day was growing old, and she couldn't afford to waste any more time.
A chilly wind was now blowing and the sun was lowering, casting an orangey glow across the cloud-dotted sky. The temperature was getting to Sierra now, who realized she'd forgotten to pack a coat or sweater to wear in cases like these. She'd have to go shopping in the next town she got to first thing.
Realizing it was cold prompted her to return her shivering companions. "Have a rest, guys." She said with a small, friendly smile, holding up their pokeballs and absorbing them inside. After stuffing them into her purse the young girl walked on, cheeks becoming number with every moment.

Prowling through the Route with careful, practiced movements, the image of perfection and elegance, a Glameow's tail flickered in distaste as he watched the birds begin their nesting ritual. It was much too late to catch something now. And what a pity too, for the carnivorous feline was hungry. He hadn't eaten all day, far from being the elegant hunter despite his proud walk. He trod on his tail, any elegance brought to an end as he yowled at his own self-inflicted pain and tripped over his long, looping spiral of a tail, landing in a splay-legged heap in front of Sierra. He looked up at her, aware of how foolish he must look. His feline eyes, usually the slim mercilessness of a hunter, were currently wide- and quite adorable- from his shock. ::glameow::

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n Sierra's sore legs propelled her forward through the route, not stopping despite the chilling breeze that caused her to shiver violently. It was almost to the point where her teeth would chatter. The low temperature was so uncharacteristic, being lower than nighttime temperatures, that even Sierra's body was unused to it despite her late walks.
Due to this, her energy was focused on finding a place to stay for the night rather than on the ground where creatures might've been lurking. Luck lost the moment, for at that very second a slim, elegant feline sailed through the air. The enchanting form was immediately lost when she realized that he was not sailing; his stance was that of a cat who'd just tripped over something slippery.
As she processed this in her mind, she realized far too late that one of her legs was up, poised for the next step. The cat was in front of her, so she couldn't go forward in her next action: the other option was to step backward, but of course, being the clumsy oaf she was, her balance failed her. She caught a chance glimpse of the cat's adorable eyes before slipping backwards, letting out a cry before her butt made contact with an unforgiving, hard floor.
"Ouch.." She murmured, sitting up and wincing at the soreness in her behind. The girl knew that she'd just performed a terribly clumsy action, possibly even worse than the cat's. However, caring nothing for her own pain, she slapped the dust off of the palms of her scraped hands and directed her eyes at the cat who'd fallen before her.
"I-I'm sorry, are you alright?" She said, giving somewhat of a pained and embarassed laugh.

Feeling some amity with the girl's own lack of elegance as they both got to their feet- or in the girl's case, sitting up- the Glameow licked his paws in an attempt to restore an image of grace. "Yes, I'm quite alright," said the Glameow. In case she didn't quite understand him, as most humans did, he let out a deep, rumbling purr to proscribe an image of happiness to her. "Oh, where are my manners? What about you? Are you feeling alright?" To display concern, Glameow walked around Sierra, inspecting her for injuries with his strong amber eyes. ::glameow::

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n Sierra gave a smile of relief when she saw that the cat was unscathed. She, however, wasn't in the best of condition, her hands and knees bearing new scrapes from the fall. The girl had felt this sort of pain millions of times, however, and was too conditioned to even feel the bleeding pain. In response to the feline's concerns, she responded, "I'm fine, thanks."
However, she nearly started at the new feeling upon her head. Her hair was rustling in the wind. As she brought her hand up to pat her hair, she realized that her hat was gone. A cold chill ran through her; her pikachu hat was one of her prized possessions. "My hat.." She murmured, looking around with wide eyes to locate it. But she couldn't see where it was.
The girl stood up quickly, nearly falling over as the blood rushed out of her head but quickly regaining herself. This was important. That hat had been custom made and shipped over from the Kanto region, and she treasured it deeply. Her eyes scanned the area desperately as she walked around in small, quick steps trying to locate her treasure. She didn't realize that it was behind a rock, swaying in rhythm to the wind.

The other Pokémon was calm, quiet, hardworking, and did not try to piss his other Pokémon off at every turn. The little quilava had already driven off Ryuuku, to the point where the Charizard decided to take a break from her and fly off on his own. Now, even Blaze was getting a bit annoyed of her. Soon, she will calm down and learn that life wasn't just one huge game.
At least when they battled, she was obsessed in showing him that she was the strongest fire Pokémon there was. Even if she did go a bit overboard.
Ashes was skipping along next to her trainer, quite pleased that the stupidly large Charizard was finally gone. Now, she would be able to show her supremacy as Blaze's strongest. She might be a late arrival, but she had hidden talent in her! She'd show them all. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted something yellow, sticking out from the earthy tones around it. Bonding over, Ashes went to investigate. She retracted her flame from her head and sniffed around, sticking her head into the opening of the hat. Somehow, she managed to awkwardly wear the hat that was much too large for her, balancing it on her head and back.
"Ashes..." said Blaze, exasperated. What had she found now? It seemed to be a... hat? He plucked it off of his pokemon's little body. A pikachu hat. Yes. ...
Who the hell still wore a pikachu hat, nowadays? Scanning across the route, he spotted Sierra. She seemed quite worried, as if she was looking for something. Probably this hat. Though he would be doing her a favour if he just burned it. Ashes had been a bit miffed that her trainer had just taken away her new treasure. Well, that was no problem! She was just going to find another one. Wait, was that a glameow over there? She ran over to the cat pokemon, completely ignoring Sierra. This would be perfect! If she was able to beat the Pokémon in battle, she would show Blaze just how strong she was!
<Battle, battle, battle!> she said happily, running over, using a quick attack onto the unsuspecting Pokémon. The glameow let out a shriek as she was suddenly attacked. Utterly insulted and annoyed, it ran off, muttering something about Pokémon that did not know what politeness and respect meant.

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n Sierra had looked around for only a few seconds, panicking all the while, before she heard the shriek of the Glameow. At the sudden sound she jumped and froze in place, her eyes spotting the cat just as she was scrambling away. Rather than say a parting, the girl turned to see what had caused the commotion. Her eyes widened as she looked upon the disturbance: a flaming Quilava.
One of the many flares crackling off of the porcupine's slender back bounced towards her, and she let out a a small shriek as she jumped backward to avoid it. Ashes was quite adorable, yes, but a fire pokemon like that wouldn't be very easy to pet - at least for Sierra, who was not, at the moment, wearing fireproof gloves.
A quick analysis by her pokedex confirmed that this was a Quilava, none of which were available in Route One. This pokemon couldn't be wild. At this gem of information the girl straightened and looked around for its owner, spotting the sleek yellow fabric of her hat in the process. "U-wha!? You found it?!" She exclaimed, pupils dilating at the sight.
At closer inspection, however, the man was quite a bit taller than her, with the possession of well-defined muscles. She hadn't met him before, and the lesson of never to go into someone's vehicle if they offered you candy echoed in her head as if it somehow related. Cautiously, shaking, she held out her hands towards him. "Um.. can you toss it over here? Because.. I'm kind of afraid..." She said, cheeks pinking a little. What was there to be scared about? Perhaps it was the man's stance or the cold, distant look in his eyes that spooked her.

Somehow, a little part of him did not feel like fighting and just wanted to give the trainer her had back and get it over with. Ashes was tiring him out and he did not want to deal with anything else. But then she had such a fearful expression on her face that Blaze wasn't too sure what to think of it. Did he really look that bad? Had this been his intention? He did not know anymore. Sometimes, he did not even know why he did everything these days.
What did he want? He wanted to be the best, to be the strongest. He could not forget about this, just as he could not forget how the others had turned on him. Those two facts, he had to remind himself. He had been going around the first route, stealing pokemon and destroying young trainers in battle, but for what? A way to take petty revenge and to feel a bit better about himself? When he put it like that, it was rather pathetic. Overarching goal. He needed the support and backing of slightly more powerful people, and for that he needed control. Control that one other man had. And so he would have to work for his position, for his power, and if this is what being someone on the wrong side of the law, then this was what he had to do.
But did he want to battle the trainer? She almost reminded him of his younger sister. Almost. Maybe he should just hand over the hat and forget about this. He wanted to look strong, intimidating, but not feared. Well, maybe a bit. Did he look that scary? Especially without Ryuuku around, wherever that dragon went.
He guessed this was a good thing, if he wanted to stand up to everyone else and truly show his strength. However, now he still had the trainer and her hat to deal with. How much did they know, back in HQ? His actions seemed pretty well monitored. They were probably hooked up to his pokedex, which he would have thrown out already if not for the sentimental value. And the occasional usage, of course.
He looked her over one last time. "In exchange for a battle," he told her, looked down at the hat again. "Win or lose, I'll give the hat back." He walked over to a little tree and plopped the hat onto one of the small branches, the weight of the hat making it droop a bit. He then walked away from it, but close enough to reach it before Sierra could. "You are a trainer, right?"
In the meantime, Ashes was listening, kind of patiently but starting to get restless. What was going on? The glameow had just left without giving her a chance to battle. Well that was one boring puss. If it were a fire type, it wouldn't have backed down from the fight. Instead, the quilava was stuck between the two trainers, waiting for something exciting to happen. The flames sprouting from her body died down a bit as she laid on the road, before she put them out completely to lie on her back and gyrating her body left and right, scratching herself as she covered her fur in light dirt particles.

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n Sierra's hands were held out in front of her for so long that she felt like she was about to fall forward, but eventually the man in front of her answered; however, it wasn't quite the answer she was looking for. In hearing his answer, she straightened, drawing her arms back to her sides, and the momentum nearly knocked her off balance; luckily she caught herself before she fell backward.
He wanted a battle, and she'd get the hat back either way? Well, she'd been expecting the hat back without a fight, but she supposed she could live with this. The older man seemed pretty interesting, his handsome face reminding her of the crush she had in high school. The thought brought a slight blush to her cheeks, to which she responded by looking away. Fortunately, at this time he was putting the hat onto a tree branch. Bringing her head back up, she glanced at the slightly dirtied cap before pinning her gaze back on Blaze.
The youth thought for a moment about his offer before giving a joking sigh and responding, "I don't have a choice, do I?" Her lips gave a friendly grin as she spoke the words, sensing no particular hostility from the man in front of her. His stare was almost like that of a sibling's, in fact.
The Quilava was evidently his, and it was evidently a fire pokemon by its mane of crackling orange. Now, what was a good counter against fire? Well, rock snuffed out flame, and water put it out, as she had learned in school. Then it was down to Seryl and Pascal, and Pascal was the one that needed training. Sierra reached for the pokeball holding him, smiled and brought the sphere to her lips, and tossed the ball down in front of her. The sleek, orange figure emerged, but he was not very excited to be out; his body, scored with wounds, and panting jaws revealed his less than perfect status.
Obviously he'd need some healing before he could think of battling this foe. After looking over her friend, Sierra pulled out another Potion, knelt, and sprayed the concoction over her beloved otter. Thinking about it, those potions seemed to be endless in her bag. Hadn't she started off with two? It was as if some outer figure was placing them inside it for her.
With a grin, glad her friend was in shape for battle, the young girl stepped back and looked forward at her opponent in anticipation of his actions. Pascal reflected her friendliness, giving a sly, toothy grin as he directed his eyes at Ashes.

A water pokemon. Blaze hated water pokemon. This was the reason he was training Ashes in the first place. Once a typhlosion, they were able to learn a powerful grass attack, something Blaze had wanted to abuse. But Ashes would have to survive first. She was inexperienced and not as good as she thought she was. Strong, yes, but skilled...? Not so much.
But a battle was a battle. He was bound to meet someone on the route that had a water pokemon against him, and Ashes would just have to power through.
The little fire pokemon let out a cry of joy as she got ready for a battle. <I'm going to win this!> she said prematurely. <No one can beat fire types, and I'm the best one around!> The flame on the pokemon's head and behind flared up as she showed off her prowess. Blaze frowned. Though he wasn't sure what his pokemon had said, he was not too happy with the attitude Ashes showed. Maybe a loss wouldn't be too bad.
"Ashes, focus," he told the pokemon, who happily bounded across the field to take his place, getting ready. This was going to be a joke, for her. She did not see any way she could lose such a match. She was just too good.
Blaze made sure Sierra was ready, having finished using the potion and prepared for the match. Once she looked good to go, the trainer's eyes glanced down to the pokemon facing each other off. "Smokescreen. Cover the field, and then quick attack. Try to retreat back into the smoke," he ordered. The pokemon seemed quite excited at the prospect and let out a large stream of thick black smoke, blanketing the battlefield. She then backed up a single step to ready herself before leaping in to where she figured the buizel would be, running over as fast as she could, already braced for impact.

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n Sierra couldn't help smiling at the little Quilava's spunky personality. It was so much like the innocent, determined attitudes of the young children she'd often babysat in her neighborhood. She couldn't quite remember her own childhood, but she could imagine she'd acted exactly like that.
The sound of the older man's voice brought her back, and she straightened slightly, focusing on the battle they were about to have. She'd let him start, since her pokemon had been let out first. Hopefully the water-type advantage over fire would help some in this battle. Otherwise, the stark difference in levels would secure the win for this mysterious man. Sierra's fist clenched just slightly. She was determined to win and prove to herself that she was a competent trainer.
He began to give orders to his pokemon. Sierra watched as smoke poured out of the Quilava; instantly she smelled the smog, raising her arm to cough into it. Buizel stood his ground, trying not to be fazed by the smoke and ash whirling around. Now he could hear the sound of paws scraping the ground as Ashes leapt. Seeing it before her pokemon did, Sierra commanded, "Quick Attack outta the way, then Water Sport!" Immediately after giving these orders, she coughed some more.
Pascal reacted even as Sierra was still giving out orders, having readied himself beforehand, and just an instant before the Quilava plunged into his side he was racing away. The smoke was so thick he could feel it, and it was making him lightheaded as well. The otter lowered his body down to the floor where it smelled less bad, then tried to remember what Sierra's second command was. What was it..? He hadn't the faintest idea. Hopefully, though, Ashes did not know where he was.
Pascal dodged Quick Attack using Quick Attack.

Blaze was rather pleased with the girl's battling abilities. She was able to think fast and use moves in unconventional ways. This would prove to be interesting. It was a good thing there was a smokescreen cover for his pokemon, now. Ashes would be able to deal with it, hiding in the thick smog and waiting for her chance. A water Pokémon would never have been exposed to something like this before.
"Again," he said, knowing that this would give him such an advantage in terms of dodging attacks. He was trying to see his Pokémon through the smoke. He could sometimes make out the outline of the sleek pokemon, and the occasional flames peaking out from the blanket of dark smoke also gave her position away. Nevertheless, Ashes seemed very pleased with herself and executed the attacks joyfully, spitting out more smoke around the field before she had to determine where the buizel was. She looked around, her eyes accustomed to the smokescreen, scanning for her prey. <There you are!> she called out before running over for another quick attack excitedly.

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n This time Sierra could not see where Pascal was, so hidden in the blanket of smog that he couldn't even find himself. She was even more displeased when the flaming beast spouted even more smoke. How long would this go on for? Sierra decided to simply pass a command regardless of his invisibility. "Water Gun!" She called.
Pascal was still crouched beneath the treacherous, hot smoke, trying not to choke on the horrid stuff, when he heard a muffled command from his trainer. Except, what the hell did she say? He had no time to ponder this, however, because the very next thing he knew Ashes rammed her hot body into him. The flames on her didn't hurt him a lot, due to his being coated in water from the Water Sport, but her linear body struck hard like a whip. He winced as he picked himself up from the ground, coughing out smoke from his lungs.
He had no time to think about what Sierra commanded; she was a clear target now, so close in range and possibly vulnerable from the ramming she'd just did. The weasel parted his jaws and fired off the most powerful attack he knew - Sonicboom. However, what he didn't think about was that the smoke particles would probably deflect some of the waves in many directions. Some deflected back toward him, causing him to wince in pain, but still some drifted toward his flame-quilled foe.
Pascal used Sonicboom on Ashes.

The sonicboom had hit her, but she still stood strong. This was just too easy! Of course, a full-on attack would have probably done much more damage. <You're so bad at this~> she taunted. <It's not your fault, though. You're just a water Pokémon.>
And it was a good thing Blaze couldn't understand what she was saying, or else he would surely have gotten rather annoyed with her. Even mores that he was now. "Ashes, keep going," he ordered, a bit bored. She did not have that many moves in her arsenal, but smokescreen was working and quick attack was a good choice. Normally he would favour fire attacks, but not when he was going against a water type.
Ashes was enjoying herself quite a bit, though her smoke reserve was starting to run a bit low. The attack was still executed, though, but not in the same vigour as she had before. After that, she did a little backflip, useless and showy, enough to make Blaze frown at the movement. It was useless, unnecessary, and exposed herself. Thus, what should have been a quick attack actually looked more like tackle, as Ashes did not have the same speed in her.

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n Pascal scowled at the insolent Quilava's petty insults. Heck, he'd doused the flames of fire pokemon several times; it was water's specialty, for crying out loud! And this battle would be no exception - he abhorred the thought of being defeated by this snobby creature. He opened his mouth for a snide retort at the sassy Quilava, but this only resulted in hacking out more putrid smoke. He moistened his mouth with a little bit of water so that his mouth wouldn't dry out, then crouched low in wait for Ashes' attack.
To his dismay, she spouted even more smoke - it must be intoxicating many more pokemon outside their vicinity now - , which refreshed the invisibility of his female foe; then she came at him once again with an attack. At that very moment he coughed, which left him open for a ramming straight into his snout that sent his poor body flying through the air. He smacked onto the floor, slapping soot into the dreadfully foggy, black atmosphere, then forced himself up with a bit of effort.
Sierra hadn't seen a speck of water last turn even though she'd spouted the command quite clearly. Perhaps the sound was muffled in the smoke. "Water Gun!" She shouted, a bit louder this time.
Pascal heard the yelling clearly now - his objective was to use water gun. But first he wanted to quickly get the smog out of his eyes. He raised a paw to clean soot off of his face, then saw that his fur was coated in utter blackness; all of it, including his body and tail, was full of smoke. This was good at the moment, offering him a little protection, but it would probably suck later to clean the crap off.
Taking note of his camouflaged state, Pascal looked around to pinpoint his target. There! He could sense movement in the air - a backflip of some sort? - a little distance away. It was the right time to fire off his attack, and so he did. The blue liquid gushed from his jaws, blasting through the smoke towards where he saw the movement.
Pascal was hit by Tackle; Pascal used Water Gun on Ashes.

What was Ashes thinking? Nothing, probably. The girl was just so full of herself and off the wall that she did not think, sometimes, and that irritated him. The displeasure showed on his face, but the quilava was the one audibly complaining. The water was cold and wet, and though her fur wasn't soaked and managed to buffer most of the water, it was still so unpleasant and rather painful. <Eww! You got my fur all wet!> she said, upping the fire on her back to dry herself off, but wasting energy while she was doing it.
"Focus, Ashes, and stop fooling around," said Blaze, trying to get his pokemon to mature a bit and just battle without showing off too much. "Leer, Quick Attack." The pokemon had a bit of an uneasy look on her face when she heard the disappointment from her trainer and did not do many frivolous actions this time around. She wanted to, oh she wanted to show her prowess, but Blaze just did not see it, did not understand it. And so, through the smokescreen that was clearing a bit now that no smoke was being added to it, Ashes leered at the buizel before charging in for a quick attack, little feet propelling her long body forward.

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n Sierra's lungs were nearly screaming from the excess of smoke that was entering them; she had to turn and cough often to avoid choking on the gunky air. Luckily, though, it seemed to be clearing; she didn't see any new plumes of smoke from the Quilava. Now she could actually see the battlefield, and what she saw was a black blob. Wait, was that Pascal? There was no time to think upon it; Ashes was zooming straight at the weasel. "Look out!" Shouted Sierra.
It took Pascal a moment to register his trainer's command, and by then it was too late. He turned, catching a glimpse of Ashes' leering red eyes before getting pummeled into by the agile pokemon. Sierra saw this, eye twitching slightly in recognition, and gave her next command regardless. "Water Gun again!"
The weasel complied, raising his head and baring his teeth at Ashes before spouting a beam of water in her direction.
Pascal hit by Leer and Quick Attack. Pascal used Water Gun on Ashes.

Blaze watched the water gun follow Ashes back into the thick smoke, where she managed to dodge the attack. The quilava was quite proud of that little accomplishment and giggled a bit as she waited, or tried to anyways, for her trainer's next command. She did not want to wait though, being rather impatient, and then started her attack before the command came through, using another Quick Attack.
"Ash!" snapped Blaze, not too happy that she was making her own decisions. But it was too late. The fire Pokémon already shot out of the smokescreen for another speedy attack. It had worked before, so why not try it again? That was what Ashes had assumed. Blaze won't admit that he would have also commanded that as an attack, because that was not the point. Ashes needed discipline. none of his others were this unruly. Blaze obviously slacked off when it came to training her.

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n This time, Sierra registered Ashes' attack before it struck. "Quick, Pas, jump over her!" She ordered hastily, hoping that her plan would work. Jumping was a reflex, after all, and such a fidgety Buizel would've had enough practice making quick movements.
The weasel turned his head to see Ashes coming, and in the next quick moment he propelled himself off of the ground. Taking advantage of this opportunity, he turned slightly in the air, opened his jaws, and launched yet another volley of water at the Quilava's hiney, especially the part where all the flames were jetting.
Sierra breathed a sigh as she watched this, becoming increasingly proud of her sleek-furred friend.
Pascal avoided the Quick Attack. Pascal used Water Gun on Ashes.

Ashes should have the level advantage, but at this disadvantageous type matching, it was hard to predict. The quick attack was dodged skillfully and the quilava did not expect a quick water gun to follow. Instinctively, her flames were retracted and the openings closed off. She still took quite a bit of damage, her fur being soaked quite badly. Oh, how she hated water, the pokemon realized. It was cold, and wet, and cold, and miserable.
"Ashes, focus. Leer and Quick Attack, back into the smokescreen," Blaze commanded. The leer came easily, as the pokemon sent her best death glare at the weasel, before she used the speedy attack. The buizel was between her and the smokescreen, so she hoped to hide in the slightly dissipating cover of black smoke.
