Nyumbani Island is a tiny stretch of arid savannah land located off the western coast of Sinnoh, with the closest civilization being the town of Floaroma several miles to the south-east. It has no port, only a few acacia trees and thorny bushes scattered about its fifteen acres of land. It is a warm, hostile environment, so lonely and desolate that only a scant collection of the hardiest Pokémon call it home, though it provides a comfortable homestead for two families of Pokemorph. The Nyumbani Tribe, a mixed collective of Infernape and Luxray Pokemorphs, has dwelt at the island for as long as anyone can remember. The roots of their genetic mutation are uncertain, and while most 'morphs seek to integrate themselves with their human peers, the Nyumbani people choose to live as wild and bestial as any Pokémon should be.
The Tribe is led by the fiercest hunter, typically a strong male and usually one of the Infernape family, while the eldest female of both families provides the moral and emotional heart of the group. The Tribe practices no religion outside of a strong belief in family bonds and a oneness with Pokémon. On their eighteenth birthday every member of the Tribe is driven away for a time and only allowed to return after catching their own Pokémon which will then be their life companion. Only if the bond between the individual and the Pokémon is strong enough will the two be accepted back into the ranks, with the individual now respected as an adult. These captured Pokémon are then treated as closely as family, with all the respect and privileges given to any one of the Tribes-people. They are not expected to battle, but will aid their captor in whatever tasks they are assigned - whether that is watching the young or going hunting.
At the time of Eshe's birth the Tribe was under the leadership of Sefu, an elderly Infernape who had ruled the Trube for a good thirty years of prosper. Many young had been born under his reign, boosting the population to a dangerous high for such a small land, and as Eshe was born at the end of the birthing season she spelled a great strain of resources and already tense familial ties. The Luxray family, having a larger gene pool to itself than the Infernapes, had been content for a couple of generations to breed within itself. The wiser but less skilled Infernapes were at this point a frail family, consisting of very few young and mostly elders, with their number making up only about twenty per cent of the entire Tribe. Upon her birth, Eshe, as daughter to the strongest, most influential parents of the Luxray family, was offered to be betrothed to Sefu's son, already four years old at the time of her birth. Eshe's grandmother, the wise woman of the Tribe, had proposed the union, but her mother Sharifa was tentative. Sefu's son, Zuberi, was already showing signs of introversion, a preference for his own personal strengths rather than those of the group.
Years passed and the two younglings were consistently forced to bond together once a week, joining hunting parties and over adult-led activities. Zuberi was never fond of these occasions but kept up a strong, polite front while he subtly plotted how best to avoid the female yet go ahead with their planned union so that he might overcome his father as leader and take the Tribe in a new, more selfish direction. Eshe, however, was a perfectly content, happy young female, eager to join the pulse of the Tribe. At hunting parties she excelled, never failing to bring back fish and meat for her family, and she showed signs of being a very strong, tactical leader, albeit a bit brash and impulsive. Her parents were proud, and gradually Sharifa's concerns began to draw away - her daughter was proud and confident, she wouldn't let the bonds of marriage hamper her potential. Indeed, as time continued to slip by it became more and more of a prospect that Eshe rather than Zuberi would take Sefu's place, gossip that ran rampant around the Tribe yet was neither proved correct nor false.
When Zuberi returned at 19 with his Pokémon companion, a Golbat, he was repulsed to find that Eshe had indeed become highly favored by his father. Although only fifteen she was all but second in command, leading hunting parties, keeping watch for roving predatory Pokemon, offering advice to the confused and upset, and helping out with a variety of everyday chores. Relations between the Infernape and Luxray had never been so positive. Spurred on by this internal friendliness a number of the single Luxray men and women had partnered up with the few viable ape 'morphs, with a couple of pregnancies further boosting morale. Zuberi was fuming but kept a check on his tongue, feigning only a slight interest in her accomplishments while he plotted how to overcome this bothersome obstacle. He was madly jealous of the ease with which she had gained favor while his own father tried his hardest to keep his son's potential subdued. The truth was that Sefu knew the temper of his offspring and feared what he might become if left to his own devices. However, if he were to join with the stronger Eshe she might take over the brunt of ruling duties, encouraging Zuberi to take a backseat and become calmer and more at peace with the Tribe.
When it finally came time for Eshe to leave and capture her own companion she found the parting excruciatingly hard. Her younger brother Asani had reached an age where she felt that she must instruct him and guide him through Tribal life, and at only ten he was impressionable. But still, she knew she must leave in order to be understood as an adult, and so she left for the mainland not to return for two years. During her absence Zuberi grew more confident, yet still highly self involved, convinced with every passing day that his bride-to-be had met some foul end on the continent or else had taken to life in civilization. He used the latter argument to spread the seeds of uncertainty through the Tribe, breeding a wariness in whether the highly social morals of the Tribe could really be trusted. His Golbat, Bado, was used to slyly poison Leader Sefu, and so Zuberi was named successor. A number of the Luxray met similar ends, and the poisoning was hidden as a sickness, a disease brought about by their lack of strong leadership and order. The Infernape became dominant and oppressive of their feline companions, with those that had partnered cross-species being chased from the island to whatever ends. Sharifa and Eshe's father Asante were killed in the disputes that followed, and indeed Zuberi only permitted those Luxray young enough to be controlled yet strong enough to be of use to remain. Asani, Eshe's little brother, was one of the few that remained to see her return.
Eshe had spent those two long years steadily gaining the trust and companionship of her chosen Pokemon, a young male Gible that she had named Enzi, meaning 'might'. She was appalled and distraught by the changes that her betrothed had inflicted on her once tender, beloved homeland. Her family had been torn apart, with only her younger brother remaining yet too scared to approach her or seek to comfort her. Zuberi met her upon her arrival with a harsh sneer and immediately set Bado, now a Crobat from the experience of one-sided battles, upon her new companion. As Enzi and Bado fought ferociously upon the banks of the island, kicking up sand, dirt and blood, Eshe threw herself at Zuberi and fought tooth and claw. She caught the roughest end of the ordeal - Enzi, still very young and inexperienced in the ways of hunting, met an end at Bado's merciless fangs, and Zuberi with his superior weight and height, easily pinned her in the water. She was mere seconds away from drowning on the sickly salted water before a distraction bought her time to escape. Asani had thrown a rock at the back of the false Leader's skull, loosening his grip enough for the female to wriggle free and, snarling, swim far enough out to avoid the water-shy Infernape Pokemorph following. She watched as Enzi was dragged away for precious meat, and Asani was brutally punished, though his life was too useful to be ended for his treachery. Fleeing behind some outcropping rocks she was able to avoid Zuberi's attention and was soon given up for dead. She watched as the Tribe drew back, observed the regime that her betrothed had inflicted, how vastly the Luxray were now outnumbered and how many had been brainwashed to Zuberi's awful opinions. Although every inch of her body begged to charge in and rescue her brother from the misery that had been inflicted on him, she held back. She couldn't just rescue her brother and leave her distant family and friends to suffer, but she couldn't manage it on her own, now without a friend in the world.
Eventually she returned to the mainland to ponder her options and came to the final decision that she would leave Sinnoh for a time. The place held too many memories, it was too familiar and held too few opportunities for a lone Pokemorph. She resolved to sacrifice part of her beliefs and upbringing by becoming a Pokémon trainer. She would gather as many strong, wild allies as she could and train them to fight with all the ferocity of any feral Luxray, and she would take back her homeland.[/ul]
personality
If crossed Eshe can make the most potent and vindictive of enemies. She very rarely believes in second chances and has a simply black and white view of people - you're either good and trustworthy or you're a threat and an enemy that needs to be removed from her life. In most cases if she doesn't agree with your way of doing things or your beliefs she will avoid you, but if you pose a threat to herself or anyone she believes to be good, particularly any of her Tribe or her companions, she will seek to destroy, or at least cripple you to such a point that you no longer pose that threat. Like any of her kind she can be remorseless and brutal, hard as stone if she needs to be, letting her compassion for life take a backseat. And if you really are that big of a threat she will go out of her way to chase you down and bring you to her brand of justice. [/ul]
other
• As mentioned before, Eshe is having a hard time growing accustomed to not being allowed to hunt Pokémon for food here, and may relapse from time to time. She does enjoy the act of hunt like any feline would, so chances are she will indulge herself to chasing and catching prey but will then allow them to flee or else use her own Pokémon to legitimately capture them. Her stomach is hardened to the bacteria in raw meat, so steaks and chops make up the bulk of her diet, as well as fruits, berries and most vegetation. She isn't overly fond of vegetables, however, and doesn't really understand modern cooking and restaurants.
• She has no preference at all for Pokémon elements or types, but does enjoy rough play fighting and chasing, so she would admit to a liking for bipedal or quadruped Pokemon, particularly those that bear resemblance to cats. She has a hard time seeing bird and fish Pokémon as anything more than food.
• Having spent her whole life around Pokemon, Eshe is fluent in Pokespeech.[/ul]
