I'M A SOLDIER THESE SHOULDERS HOLD UP SO MUCH THEY WON'T BUDGE {- I'LL NEVER FALL OR FOLD UP -} _______________________________________________ Books. Wondrous, glorious books. Now, Joshua wasn't exactly your average bookworm. He'd hated school when he'd attended it, he didn't wear glasses, and he didn't have to have his nose shoved in a book every minute of the day. But he did absolutely love them, and so it was no surprise that he nearly stopped dead in surprise when he noticed that Verona had a library. Rather than going inside immediately, as any normal person would have done, he hesitated and instead stared at it for several moments. There were people in there. He didn't want to talk to anyone. But... but the books... Damn, why did choices have to be so hard? <Uh, Josh? Why are you staring?>A little defensive, Joshua whipped his head around to glare at the navy-furred feline that was perched on his shoulder. "Hey, I like books, okay?" he said quickly. "I just don't like talking to people." He'd always been like that, growing up. Most people thought he was some freak loner, and they avoided and judged him. He had gotten so sick of that, he'd actually started to hate the human race as a whole. His family hadn't helped. His sister was a complete douche, and his father no better. <It's a library, Josh. You go there to read. What are the chances someone's going to approach us?>Joshua sighed. "I guess you're right." He pushed open the door and immediately made his way to the most secluded looking part of the place, which wasn't even that hidden away. Still, it was quite, and there was a shelf of interesting books within reach. He selected a particularly gory-looking volume and sat down, ignoring Eris (who curled up in his lap and fell asleep, quite pointedly).

::sierra:: < Enter Sierra! ) Sierra was trudging tiredly through the streets of Verona, walking past the strange figures embodying the population of Cheyenne. A great many of them were not trainers, but rather worked in a standard job. Inside, this made her proud - she was a pokemon trainer. One of the few, the proud, that embarked on a journey to experience the world. It was a shame that none of them could feel the way she felt, she thought.
On the other hand, she was STARVING.
Lately the snack area of her backpack had shrunk, holding in it only a few dozen pocky boxes. She needed to restock, and fast, before she ran out of the little gems.
As she walked through the city she'd been looking through the glass windows in order to see whether they were a shop, or supermarket, or perhaps a little pocky cafe that she could rummage through. So far, she'd seen none of such establishments - until something out of the corner of her eye caught her attention.
It was a snack machine.
Giving a gasp of joy and/or hunger, she quickly ran over and pressed her face against the window of the Library, eyes scanning the machine hungrily. It was chock-full of pocky - perfect for a starving little girl like her.
As if she were committing a crime, the girl snuck in through the front door and walked through the aisles, maneuvering her way to said snack machine. As it turns out, the area that Josh was busily reading in was stationed just near there.
Finally at her destination, she scanned the glorious snack-filled machine once more. Her eyes practically ATE that thing. Finally selecting a large-looking pack of pocky, she tore out her money and checked through it hungrily. Seeing she had just enough to purchase the candy, she inserted the desired amount of Pokedollars and awaited her selected treat.
Finally the machine ejected the pack, holding hundreds of pocky sticks, and she held it happily to herself. The girl practically emitted a piercing laugh of happiness, but remembered just before she did that she was in a library. Disregarding the thought, she turned and attempted to locate a seat. Finally satisfying her need for food had alerted her to her stunning need of rest on her legs.
The candy-loving girl went and sat at the nearest place - a rather secluded-looking bunch of reading chairs around a table that held books and magazines neatly atop it. Only one person, she noticed, was sitting here, occupied with a rather grotesque-looking book. She shuddered just looking at it.
Seeing no way to greet him without being a bother, Sierra shrugged and decided to savor her new prizes. She began to attempt to open the pocky pack, which evidently was sealed inside of a foil bag. The loud sound generated by her shaking and rattling the bag caused a large disturbance throughout the library, possibly alerting Josh as well.
After a few seconds she was unable to wring the bag open, and her fingers hurt. Sighing in unison with her rumbling tummy, she stared sadly at the unpenetratable treat in her hands.

I'M A SOLDIER THESE SHOULDERS HOLD UP SO MUCH THEY WON'T BUDGE {- I'LL NEVER FALL OR FOLD UP -} _______________________________________________ Someone giggled loudly, momentarily distracted him. He cast a glare in their general direction, but they were too busy with the snack machine anyways, so he returned his attention to the book. Joshua was quite content when he was reading, and so he easily lost himself amongst the pages. The sick love for horror novels had been a part of him since he was a kid, and he'd never really given it up. Ghost stories? They'd given most of the neighborhood kids nightmares, but he'd ate them up like candy. And now, as an adult, he favored the sick volumes of gore. He didn't like most horror movies however. They were too tame, and their storyline were shit. Josh liked blood and guts, sure, but he preferred an interesting story surrounding the reason the hot guy down the street had been massacred. And there was always at least one blonde ditz in movies that made it to the end, where the intelligent people did not. This rather insulted him. Being quite the intellect himself, he preferred to think that he'd have more a chance than an idiot. He was just getting to the good part when a rather loud crackling, crinkling noise invaded the air around them, shattering the serene silence of being in a library. And when he looked up, he saw the same girl who'd laughed messing around with something. So close to him. The waves of irritation and anger crashed over the nineteen year old almost immediately. "My god, could you be any louder?" he snapped, without thinking about what he was going to say first. He hated when people even sat near him. On the bus, if someone sat beside him, he'd make a point of moving, without even an apology to them. 'Anti-social' was a bit of a tame word for it. He absolutely loathed society. But he loved candy. And what she had there... that was candy. And, well... candy made people do things they normally wouldn't. There were two things that Josh was an absolute sucker for. Books... and candy. Wait; why the hell is there a snack machine in the library, anyways? It seemed a bit odd. If someone got something particularly sticky, they could get it all over the pages, and that was disgusting. But still. Candy. The girl was forgiven. And Joshua could see that she seemed to be having trouble opening the package of pocky. Eh, wrappers could be a pain in the arse, sometimes. Especially those on CD casings - but that was another story entirely. He sighed slightly, and decided that he would try and be civil. No promises, though. "Do you need help opening that?" Some people might have apologized first, as common courtesy, but Josh didn't do good with apologies. He hated admitting that he was wrong. Hell, at least he was being sort of nice, right?

// My god, could you be any louder?
Sierra immediately stopped fiddling with the crinkly bag and turned quickly to the source of the harsh voice, her widened eyes betraying her alarm. She'd nearly forgotten that she was possibly disturbing someone else with the noise she was making. Thinking of a quick reply, she placed the pocky on her lap and apologized toward him, attempting to mask the fear she felt. "S-sorry, umm, whoever you are... I mean, for making that noise.. and all..." She said shakily.
He asked if she needed help. Well, Sierra didn't always like admitting she sucked at something, but one thing she definitely was not skilled at was opening things. It was simply terrifying to see the girl any time she was attempting to open a pack of chips, or a pudding cup, or twisting the cap off of a water bottle - and don't even get her started on opening up soda cans.
Hell, the only things she were good at were possibly doors, which she sometimes bumped into first, .. and pocky boxes.
Thus, she was thankful for his offer - although it was weird that such an offer came so soon after he'd berated her. The change in tone did nothing to soothe Sierra, who was still quite frightened of the man near her. Even so, she lifted the wrapped pocky toward him. "If you say so.." She said, a little less shy this time.

I'M A SOLDIER THESE SHOULDERS HOLD UP SO MUCH THEY WON'T BUDGE {- I'LL NEVER FALL OR FOLD UP -} _______________________________________________ Eris, awakened by the conversation, gave a massive yawn before standing up, stretching while still standing on Joshua's lap. She made a point of digging her claws in extra hard, which made him curse softly in pain - quietly, because he did know they were in a library - and glare at her for a moment. The feline Pokémon simply gave a purr of amusement. Glancing at Sierra, she said, <Don't mind my trainer. He's just a grouch.>While he didn't take too kindly to being called a grouch, he didn't want to start an argument in the middle of this place, fearing that he'd get kicked out. Being kicked out of the library would be like a sin to someone like Joshua. It was like... like... kicking a gaming addict out of the video store! There were some things you just didn't do, and that was one of them. He would die of embarrassment. And so, instead of snapping at the Glameow, who had sat down and settled herself, but was now entirely awake, he just kept his mouth shut and tried not to look as awkward as he felt. Well, what now? The girl accepted his offer of help, which pulled down the meter of awkwardness just a little. Relieved, but refusing to show it, he nodded slightly and accepted the package as lightly as he could. Yanking it out of her grasp would have suggested that he was as grouchy as the Glameow had stated, and he really didn't need to leave those sorts of first impressions. Getting a good grip on the packet's sides, the teen easily pulled them apart. Opening things was quite annoying, but he was relatively strong, and so they weren't as much of a hassle for him now as they'd been when he was younger. Speaking of age... the girl was most definitely younger than him... maybe ranging from fourteen to sixteen? He kept his glance on her only for a moment, not wanting to look like he was staring. Josh didn't stare at younger girls. No way. And he didn't really look at them for long periods of time unless they were having a conversation. "Here," he said quietly, passing the now-opened candy back to her. Speaking of conversation? Well, it felt sort of odd just sitting here in silence. He'd never been good at small talk, though. Or big talk, if there was such a thing. Talking in general made him freeze up, occasionally stumble over his words if he was nervous. Geez, it was a hassle. "I'm, uh..." He was considering offering an apology for earlier, but the words didn't want to leave his lips. Deciding to change the wording around so he didn't directly apologize might work, perhaps? "Erm, about earlier, I-"With an overly-dramatized sigh, the Glameow in his lap rolled her eyes. <What I'm sure Joshua is trying to say, is that he was a total douche-bag, and that he's sorry.> Pointedly, she glared at her trainer. He messed up the back of his hair nervously. "Well, uh, I wouldn't put it quite like that, but..."

::sierra:: /// Sierra looked up and noticed the feline pokemon upon the man's shoulder; perhaps she had missed it before, being so concentrated on opening the bag she'd purchased. At the kitten's insult of her own trainer, the dark-haired girl smiled in good will. She was glad that they weren't the only two beings here, what with the situation turning rather awkward.
The man plucked the pocky packet from her hand, and she waited, watching, as he opened it up in mere seconds. Tears nearly welled up in her eyes as she realized what a weakling she was, but she was strong enough to hold them back and appear to have not changed her expression at all.
As he turned and handed the candy back to her, she smiled and hardly noticed the small moment he'd laid his eyes on her. Reaching out her hand, she accepted the unwrapped treat. "Thanks!" She said, beaming up at him.
Looking down at the bag now on her lap, she removed the insides - the glorious dark-chocolate pocky she adored - and removed a single stick of pocky from one of the boxes, biting the top of it gratefully. Already she could feel her hunger subsiding. She turned to face him again, hearing him speak once more.
He'd said a bit of gibberish, to which Sierra was about to kindly ask 'What is it?', before the kitten beside him elaborated on what he was trying to say - or rather, what she wanted him to say. She then listened as the man negated her comment. It seemed to her that the feline and him shared a rather abusive relationship, if she were not mistaken.
She smiled brightly. "Aha, no problem. I'm the one at fault." Replied Sierra, sticking the rest of the pocky stick in her mouth. She then presented the open pocky box to him so that the individual pocky sticks were facing toward him, in case he accepted her offer. "Want some?" She inquired, grinning slightly.

I'M A SOLDIER THESE SHOULDERS HOLD UP SO MUCH THEY WON'T BUDGE {- I'LL NEVER FALL OR FOLD UP -} _______________________________________________ The girl across from him seemed so... so... cheerful. It was strange to the dark-haired man, being in the presence of one so joyful. He'd never met anyone quite this content before, and it was putting off his judgments quite sufficiently. He was used to glares, stares, and other unpleasant glances thrown his way, especially from people whom he'd just taken the time to snap at. But this younger girl in front of him was quite happy even after he'd been a complete ass. Joshua was quite at a loss for what to do in this situation. He didn't adapt well to changes like this, it was an entire lifetime of thinking people were all the same, thrown at him in a couple of seconds. He needed some time to chew over it, before his opinion on such blissfulness would be decided. "N-No problem," he said quickly, surprised at her thanks. It had been the least he could do, after being such a jerk when she'd made the noise. After all, most people would have politely asked the girl to keep it down, but he'd been a little insulting with his choice of words. He wasn't the greatest with manners. In his house, the rules had been rather harsh. "Don't speak unless spoken to, don't question me, do as you're told get out of my sight, Joshua, stop being such a failure." His father wasn't a friendly man by any means. He hadn't wanted a son. Especially not one like Josh. Their personalities clashed horribly. It... was that dark chocolate?! Everything else was erased from his mind as the dark-haired male noticed the flavor of pocky that he'd just handed back to the girl. Dark Chocolate. Oh, sweet, sweet goodness. Of all the kinds of chocolate, dark was his favorite. Some said it was bitter, but he argued that it "just wasn't to their taste". Oh, how he loved dark chocolate. Maybe he'd go over to the machine himself in a minute, get some of that sweet heaven. But did he have enough Pokedollars on hand? No, of course he did. Joshua wasn't exactly devoid of wealth, coming from a good family. He'd never been denied money, while at home. He'd taken a chunk of it with him when he'd left on his journey, just in case. Apparently, however, he didn't need it anyways. Joshua was quite surprised by the girls offer. As mentioned earlier, he was used to much different attitudes from people. She was grinning, and his lips twitched into an almost involuntarily smile, which melted to become genuine in a second or two. So nice of her... but why? Damn, who cares? It's dark chocolate! That made up his mind for him. "Oh, uh, sure. Thanks!" Almost delicately - it won't bite you, Joshua, don't worry - he selected one of the sticks and bit the top from it slightly. Oh my god. Dark chocolate. So good. After swallowing, he offered another small smile to the girl. "So, um, what's your name?" he asked, in an attempt to be conversational. "I'm Joshua, uh, Josh to most." His Glameow had already said this, but seeing as he tried to tune out Eris' sharp comments as often as possible, he'd kind of forgotten in the heat of the moment. "This is Eris, my partner. Are, uh, you a trainer as well?" At least if they had something in common, it would be a place to start.

/// Sierra's smile broadened as she saw how much he was enjoying the pocky she'd offered to him. Another fan of dark-chocolate pocky, it seemed!
Sierra was concentrating on chewing her own pocky when he suddenly turned and offered a question, paired with a smile, to her. "I'm Sierra." She greeted. "Nice to meet you, Eris, Joshy." She smiled back at him, unconcerned about whether he'd take offense to her appliance of a nickname.
At his question, her eyes widened. He was a trainer? With his head buried into a book, he seemed hardly like one. I mean, well, he had Eris, but some people had Pokémon as pets all the time. It had hardly crossed her mind that the man was a trainer, and so this surprised her.
"Oh, you're a trainer? I mean, yes! Yes, I'm a trainer too." Sierra said quickly, adding a small laugh to signify that she realized her own awkwardness. Reaching into her purse she brought out her five pokemon, glistening from the light beaming from the ceiling screens. "This one's Seryl, this is Terra, this one's Keitan, that's Pascal, and this is my newest, Elvara!" She introduced, pointing to each pokeball in order.
As if an afterthought, she perked up and placed the pokeballs neatly back into her purse, bringing out an egg that was incubating snugly and safely in one pocket of her bag. "I found this, too, under some bushes. Isn't it adorable?" She squealed, hugging it close to her cheek.

I'M A SOLDIER THESE SHOULDERS HOLD UP SO MUCH THEY WON'T BUDGE {- I'LL NEVER FALL OR FOLD UP -} _______________________________________________ Christ, she was so cheerful! It wasn't exactly annoying him, it was just a lot to grow accustomed to, especially this quick. However, he did a good job of hiding his discomfort, not wanting to display any sign of weakness, no more than he already had, anyways. His awkwardness had been bad enough. He had recognized how odd he'd been behaving, stammering and acting surprised, and now he was going to try and be... normal. Well, at least what he thought others perceived as 'normal'. His idea of normality was much different from most, but that was alright. As long as he understood what they expected, and could apply that to his words and actions, he'd be alright. He'd practiced this a lot at school. Make the teachers think you enjoyed learning, they'd leave you alone. Simple.
Sierra was her name, huh? She surprised him (again) a moment later, calling him by a nickname he hadn't heard in years. He flinched ever so slightly, disguising it with a movement he made to stroke Eris' navy fur. Only his sister had ever called him that, and it had never been under very kind terms. But hey... Sierra was nice, right? I just won't say anything, the young male decided. After all, there was no harm in a nickname... as long as she didn't take it too far, and all. "Nice name," he said, nodding slightly in approval. He liked people with names that weren't terribly common. His own struck him as boring sometimes, but it didn't bother him. It was the middle name he hated, named after the father he loathed. He wouldn't be telling her that little detail, lest she start calling him 'Donny'. He shuddered internally at the thought. Hell no.
Sierra seemed a little shocked by the fact that he was a trainer. "Well, yes, of course," he said, raising his brows slightly to convey his own surprise. "Why wouldn't I be?" He cast an almost sidelong glance at the book, which he'd placed upon the table when offering to open the pocky for Sierra. Oh. Were trainers not usually well-read, then? Seemed a little odd, but he'd take it in stride.
Besides, Sierra was already introducing him to her team, or at least their Pokeballs. "They all have very intriguing names," he noted, his tone thoughtful. He'd come across a few people with names for their Pokémon such as 'Fluffy' 'Sparky, 'Buddy'... silly names that didn't really have much thought behind them. He'd thought about the names he was to give his partners, and so admittedly got slightly offended when others didn't do the name. "What sorts of Pokémon are they? Joshua wondered.
Ah, well. She'd introduced him to her team, he figured it would be common courtesy to do the same. Pulling out his Pokeballs, he laid them carefully on the table. "Well, this one's empty,"
[/color] he started, then gestured at Eris, "it's hers. This one here is Pan, my Bonsly. That's Asteria, the Surskit, and Hypnos, the Hoothoot." See, once he calmed down and adapted to the presence of another, they needed to find a subject he could talk about. Like Pokémon. And once you did that, well, he could appear quite normal. It was only on the inside that his awkwardness was still apparent. /// Sierra was pleased at his approval of her name. She quite adored it as well, seeing that it was quite special and caused her to stand out from the crowd of people with popular names. Although, yes, those names were also well and good, her own was her favorite. It identified her. And so she was proud of it.
At his question she grinned, slightly embarrassed by her misconception. "Well, most people aren't trainers, so.." She explained simply.
He complimented their names. "Why, yes. I just love names that aren't overused - it makes them, well, stand out." She elaborated. "Although, I don't really give much thought to them.. just name them the first thing that pops into my head." She grinned, as though this was something to be proud of.
Soon, Josh took out his own pokeballs and pointed out their names. With mouth agape she looked down at them. "Woah! I've never heard of these kinds of Pokémon before!" She murmured, looking down at them as if they were her own children. Glancing back up at his face, she aimed a child-like smile at him. "Can I see them, possibly? Maybe? I'll show you mine!" She offered excitedly. The little girl's body was trembling with excitement, not unlike the shaking of a happy child.

[This took forever; I'm sorry! I've been really busy D:]
I'M A SOLDIER THESE SHOULDERS HOLD UP SO MUCH THEY WON'T BUDGE {- I'LL NEVER FALL OR FOLD UP -} _______________________________________________ Joshua frowned slightly as he considered her words, then nodded. "I guess you're right. For all you knew, Eris could have been a pet." The cat in question rolled her eyes and lifted her chin at this comment, obviously not appreciating the thought, but she was ignored by her trainer this time around. Sometimes, you just had to let certain things go unnoticed, and this was one of those things. If he humored her, her already over-large ego would burst. "Haven't been a trainer very long, to be honest," he admitted with a shrug. "But I'd say I'm getting the hang of it." It was hard to miss the small hint of pride that touched his tone. It wasn't often that emotions got to him, but it was obvious he was passionate about his team, and about his determination to take this journey as a trainer. "What about you?" he inquired, albeit a little more curious about the girl across from him now. "Been at this very long?"He nodded. "Sometimes, standing out is a good thing." And other times it was horrible, but he wouldn't go into that. Still, he always liked when someone put thought into a name. She said that she didn't do that much and he shrugged once more. "More than some," he argued, but not in an overbearing manner. Hell, he was practically complimenting her, so it wasn't something he figured she'd be offended by. "The names of my team follow a certain theme, it's easier to come up with them, that way." He was a nerd, it hadn't been hard to find something good to choose names with. Apparently Sierra was just as, if not more, passionate about Pokemon as he was. He couldn't help but allow a light and genuine smile to touch his lips. He noticed that she was actually shaking after she requested to see them, and he chuckled before nodding slightly. "Sure, I don't see why not. None of them are evolved yet, so they aren't big enough to be too much of a problem. Well, except Hypnos, but..." He laughed again, as if sharing a joke with himself. Then, to prove his point, he first released the Hoothoot from it's captivity. The overlarge (but slightly skinnier than when they'd first met) Pokemon glared at him, but didn't seem as hostile as he had originally. "We, ah, didn't meet under the best of terms," Joshua admitted sheepishly. He then unleashed the rest of the Pokemon from their balls. <Oh, hi!> Asteria squeaked quite cheerfully, skittering over to Sierra. <Are you a friend of his?>Pan was a little more shy, but still friendly as he waved one of his branches at the girl. Whismur just sat down and stared around idly, and Eris was still lounging lazily in his lap. ::whismur:: ::bonsly:: ::hoothoot:: ::surskit::

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n ; Sierra nodded in understanding to his confession; she hadn't been a trainer for very long, either... and was probably still in the process of even understanding it, let alone getting the hang of it. "No, I've only been one for a couple of days.." She said, grinning in an embarrassed way and scratching the side of her neck with her pointer finger.
She smiled as he complimented her, chuckling in addition. "Oh, don't flatter me," She giggled, waving it off. Hearing that his pokemon all followed a theme, she gaped. "That sounds so cool," She uttered, looking forward. She should've done that. Name all of her pokemon about candy. Maybe she'd change their names sometime - it wouldn't be hard.
Sierra gave a cry of excitement when Joshua agreed to her pleas and allowed his pokemon to roam free. Out came the various creatures, and as expected they were all foreign to her. Smiling down at the friendly spider, she answered its question. "Yeah, best buddies!" She replied to the insect, a tad jokingly. They'd only spoke for a couple of minutes, and she knew that herself. A cheeky smile was the follow-up to her reply.
Swiping her pokedex out of her purse, she took data of every single one of his pokemon, although she felt bad directing it toward the hoothoot who seemed to not be enjoying this at all. Once the data was logged she set down the machine and took out her own pokeballs. "As promised, I'll show you mine." She stated, letting out each of her friends one by one.
Seryl shook his head, happy to be free from his sanctum and allowed to socialize. Looking around, he saw many other pokemon there and excitement welled up in him. Next came Terra, then Keitan, then Pascal and Elvara. Terra was a tad shy, and immediately turned and grasped the folds of her trainer's clothes. Keitan looked around hungrily for something to eat, but all he spotted were pokemon. How droll. Next came Pascal, who shook his orange fur and immediately grinned slyly when he noticed the large number of pokes in front of him. <Yo!> He greeted, raising his arm in greeting. Finally, Elvara was let out; she looked around for the sun, which luckily for her was peeping through the window; otherwise, she would have began to panic and rant about the sun's importance - and of course, no one wanted that. She hopped down from the seat that Sierra and Joshua were sitting upon and advanced towards the sunny rays, laying under them gratefully.
Looking around at the ten pokemon roaming the Library now, she feared they might get in trouble for having them out. What if they broke something, too? They'd probably get kicked out for something like that.

I'M A SOLDIER THESE SHOULDERS HOLD UP SO MUCH THEY WON'T BUDGE {- I'LL NEVER FALL OR FOLD UP -} _______________________________________________ Nodding in acceptance to this, he held back a sigh of relief. To be honest, he'd been worried that she'd be much more experienced than he was. Coupled with the fact that she was younger - her gender didn't matter, he knew girls could do anything he could, he wasn't sexist - than him, he would have felt inferior if she'd been at this for years, or even months. Days, though, just like him. Thank goodness. "Yeah, same here," he admitted. He'd already said that it hadn't been long, but some people still would have overshot that mark and assumed that he meant months, perhaps a year. After all, there were trainers that had owned their Pokemon for many years. Cool? Yes, perhaps it was. A flicker of self-obsession and pride kindled in his chest, but he mentally pushed it back, for consideration at later times. If he started getting all egotistical in front of her, it would definitely marr her opinion of him, wouldn't it? No one liked a show off. "Just makes it easier, I guess." The outward modesty was nothing compared to what he was feeling about the comment, but Sierra didn't need to know this. Her cry of excitement startled him, and he jumped a little, but he relaxed after a couple of moments. Damn it, he was going to have to get used to being around people who were a lot more cheerful than Joshua himself. He was used to only tolerating the company of icy, speechless trainers. They were, in normality, the only people he could stand to be around for very long. If no one spoked, fuses weren't lit. He chuckled when Sierra said they were best buddies, figuring that she was only kidding around. They hadn't, of course, known each other nearly long enough for that. "Yes, she's a friend." He said this aloud to inadvertently confirm to Sierra herself that he was over his earlier bout of grouchiness. Quite happy with this, Asteria grinned broadly. <Oh, okay!> She was friendly, like the girl. Nothing like Joshua, and yet he respected her all the same. He had respect for all of his Pokemon, strong or weak, feminine or fighter. Even Hypnos - though a considerably less amount; the Hoothoot would have to earn Joshua's respect, given their circumstances. He was excited to see her Pokemon, but of course, being Joshua, he didn't react with nearly as much outward excitement, just smiled and nodded lightly. "Okay." Boring, wasn't he? But hey, giddy excitement was saved for when he was drunk. Put a couple drinks - a lot of drinks, actually, he held his liquor well - in him, and he would flirt with everything in sight be the life and soul of the party. He was incredibly friendly, social, and happy when he was drunk. You'd be convinced that you were talking to a different person. However, he was also very... friendly... but let's talk of that another time, shall we? Sierra's Pokemon fascinated him, and his eyes widened slightly in wonder. "I've never seen those kinds of Pokemon before," he mumbled, intrigued. As she'd done, he pulled out his Pokedex and started to check their data. Amazing. He was smiling now, unable to help himself. "Your Pokemon are wonderful." It was true, at least in his eyes. Clearing his throat to get the attention of his Pokemon, he added, "Make sure you behave, or I'm calling you all back. We can't afford to get kicked out of here." Actually, it was Joshua who couldn't afford to get kicked out, he prized his bookworm side too much, but all the same. He turned back to Sierra, obviously comfortable in her presence now that he wasn't stammering, and was able to smile without that icy tone to the gesture. "For a 'bestie', I don't know much about you," Joshua chuckled. "What sorts of things do you like? Hobbies, things like that." He'd return answering the question if she did, he was courteous enough for that.

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n ; Sierra's face brightened when Josh mentioned that she was his friend. She'd meant it jokingly, but it was clear that they were getting along really well despite their.. rather hasty introduction.
In agreement to Josh's compliment, she nodded happily. "I know, right?" She responded happily. Looking around though, the working staff at the library were eying them with stern looks. Although their pokemon were well-behaved, 10 pokemon out of their pokeballs would be hard to supervise. She smiled meekly at them before turning back to Josh, who was speaking.
"Hobbies? Hmm.." She thought to herself. "Well, I like to sketch.. and catch pokemon..." She said. Wow. Surely there was something she took interest in? Well, being in the wilderness with hardly any technology to interact with definitely weren't good conditions to cultivate hobbies. She hadn't sketched anything ever since she departed on her journey, being without paper and pencil. Joshua's taste in books interested her, however. "But enough about me, it seems you like to read books." She suggested, changing the subject to his interests. "The one you were reading looked pretty child-friendly." She said snarkily.

I'M A SOLDIER THESE SHOULDERS HOLD UP SO MUCH THEY WON'T BUDGE {- I'LL NEVER FALL OR FOLD UP -} _______________________________________________ Joshua had never really been friendly to the public, especially not any of those with authority over him. It took all of his composure not to flip off the library staff when they cast the stern looks over at Sierra and himself. "Not like they're doing anything wrong," he muttered under his breath, his tone darkening slightly. His distaste for authority was, therefore, made a little prominent at this point. He shook off the desire, however, and instead just gave them a smile, and a pleasant expression that conveyed 'don't worry, we've got it under control'. How nice of him, right? He could help but grin slightly when she expressed her love for sketching. "Really? Me too!" Eris rolled her eyes, glancing at Sierra through half-closed lids. Still curled in his lap, she'd been feigning sleep, but had now made it obvious she was still listening. <Oh, perfect. You've gotten him started.> Now it was his turn to be disapproving, glaring at his Pokemon slightly. 'That's rude!' his irritated expression conveyed. However, he let it drop, and instead turned his attention back to Sierra. "Anyways, I love sketching. And music, too. I can play the guitar." There was an almost arrogant pride in his voice. He was trying not to brag, but well... Joshua laughed. Child-friendly. He knew she was joking, but seriously! It was quite the violent book. "Well of course! What child doesn't want to read about folk getting their intestines slowly pulled through their belly-button, and what not?" Why did he like such gory scenes? It was hard to say. "But it has an interesting story behind it, too, or I'd never have picked it up." He shrugged, then asked, "Do you read a lot of books?" He didn't mind if she wasn't a bookworm; he was only curious.

Soren had been enjoying the library in Verona. There was just enough air circulation for it not to feel stuffy, while keeping all the papers where they should be. He loved books and the library was a wonderful find. He read about the history of the land along with the various pokemon that inhabited it. He especially loved reading about the various flying pokemon, eyes scanning over the detailed pictures of staraptor, pidgeot, noctowl... skarmory. The metallic bird's picture surprised him as he wondered how it would ever be able to take flight. What seemed to be a smooth metallic surface was actually micro-feathers, compacted so tightly it formed a perfect---
The sound of a pokeball letting out its inhabitants was heard. Soren grit his teeth. He hated it when people misused the sacred library. This was not a battle ground! He went back to reading about the skarmory, how the micro-feathers compacted to become a tightly sealed armor. Individual wing feathers were coated in a light metal (aluminium perhaps? Or something more exotic?) to give it its razor-like propert---
Pokeballs again. Multiple pokeballs. His eyes squeezed shut, waiting for the disturbances to stop. There had to be more than one trainer. This was confirmed when the talking that he usually filtered out got louder and louder. This was a library. People were trying to read in peace, here!
Soren stood up from where he had been reading, quietly closing the book he had been reading after memorizing the page he was at. Clasping it between his hands, he walked over to the two conversing trainers. For some reason, the idea of anyone destroying the sacrilegious silence of the library just really annoyed him.
"Quiet," he hissed at them. "This is a library." He glared at the two trainers. Crap, he actually knew one of them. It was the girl with the cranidos. It did not matter, though. His message had been delivered and now he was going to look for a corner of the library that was still blissfully silent.

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n ; Sierra grinned in response when he replied that he, too, was an avid lover of sketching as well. How lucky that her one hobby was a commonplace between him and her. Suddenly, his cat broke in with a message of disapproval and she couldn't help but laugh in good will. She stopped as he began to talk again, mentioning that he played the guitar as well. "Really? I know a girl that can play a mean guitar, too," She responded proudly. "How long have you played?" The young teen would've asked him to play a song for her, but it seemed that he was not in possession of a guitar at the present moment -unless by chance he had one so small that it could fit in his pocket.
He began to talk about the contents of the book, every grotesque detail making another chill run down Sierra's spine. She even felt herself leaning slowly backward in response to the description. "Eugh, really? That's vile," She responded with a small laugh. He then asked her if she read a lot of books.
Her lips parted and she began to respond before she heard a sudden, familiar voice a distance away. Soren! She winced slightly as he berated them with venom in his quiet voice. Turning, she shot an apologetic look towards him, but by then he was already gone. She sat silent for a few seconds before turning back toward Joshua.
"Well, as I was saying," She responded in a hushed tone, "I haven't really read many books besides, you know. School textbooks. I hung out with my friends in my spare time, usually." Sierra concluded, smiling meekly up at Soren and trying to forget about the small exchange that had just happened between them and Soren. She knew they'd gone off on the wrong foot, and this was getting to her. She was the type of girl that preferred friends over enemies, not vice versa.

JOSHUA DONOVAN DALE.mirror lie to me, tell me you can see && maybe you won't be able to recognize me now- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Joshua grinned slightly when she said that she knew someone that could play. It was a pity that she didn't play herself; Joshua loved absolutely anything to do with guitars, and listening to someone else play, provided they didn't suck, was always a refreshing change. She asked him how long he'd played, and he blinked slightly, trying to remember. "Sweet Arceus, I think I was about... six? Yeah, that's when I first found my father's. He doesn't play, and I still don't understand why he has one, but..." The nineteen year old trailed off and shrugged, obviously still having no idea. "It's the only instrument I can play. I've been told I'd probably be good at piano, but I wouldn't know. I've never tried." He was too busy lately, anyways.
He gave a soft chuckle of amusement when she said that it was vile. "Quite. I've got an odd mind." And that he did. He was actually quite fucked up, if you knew what was going on in there. Thankfully for Sierra, she wasn't going to find out, because he didn't tell people about his inner workings. His mind was helplessly twisted, and if he warned people, he'd never make a friend for the rest of his life. And that would be depressing.
Sierra was about to answer him, and his expression was one of interest, but before she could get a word in, someone else put in their two cents. And it was a couple of pennies more than Joshua appreciated. Sneering slightly, he rolled his eyes. "Really?" he said, his tone mocking surprise. "I thought it was a fucking gym!" His tone was scathing, cold. It was becoming clear what he was usually like, when he wasn't being nice. Would Sierra still be nice to him then? But they had nothing to worry about, it seemed, for the other man was already heading back to where he'd come from. Scowling and shaking his head, he turned his attention back to Sierra. "Some people."
She didn't read much? A shame. He loved to chat about books with fellow bookworms. But that wouldn't make him treat her any different. Joshua wasn't judgmental if you got off on the right foot with him. Getting on his good side was damn near impossible, but if you managed to do it, getting off it was just as hard. "I see," he said. "I spent most of my time studying for school, reading books, and playing music." He hadn't had any friends.
How... depressing?

s i e r r a c a t a l y n n Sierra listened attentively as Joshua recounted his experience with guitars and nearly burst out laughing when he said he might be good at playing piano. "It's hard to picture you playing piano," She said, giving a genuine smile of amusement.
At his saying he had an odd mind, Sierra's smile became gentler. "No, I don't think so. You're really interesting." She commented. Realizing that this might've been an awkward thing to say, she blushed a bit, then offered the pocky package to him. "Another?"
Sierra couldn't help but laugh, hard, at Josh's humorous comeback at Soren. "Oh, don't be too mad at him. I've met him before and he's not so bad, I guess." She said, recalling when she battled alongside him. Which still hasn't finished herpderp >w> He was rough around the edges at first, but.. he wasn't that bad, she supposed. She couldn't judge at this point, since they hardly talked at all. Back to reality - Sierra continued to laugh at Joshua's remark, wiping a few tears of mirth from her eyes.
"Really?" She inquired, not thinking about whether he had friends or not at all. Rather, she thought he would have friends, being a guitar player and so friendly to her. (Though, not at first.) "I did pretty bad in school.. didn't study that often. Couldn't muster up the attention span." She said, giggling at her own pathetic habits.

JOSHUA DONOVAN DALE.mirror lie to me, tell me you can see && maybe you won't be able to recognize me now- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - He gave a warm smile and chuckled, nodding in agreement to Sierra's words. He'd lightened up quite a bit from the stiff, gruff personality he'd held when they'd first came in contact with one another. This was one of the few benefits of catching him in a less-angry-than-usual mood. He could be an alright guy if you got the right side of him. "Yes, I'm certainly not the type, am I?" Gray eyes were filled with genuine amusement. He wasn't the touchy-feely type that usually went for piano playing, I'm afraid.
Interesting.
That was a word no one had used to describe him before. He returned the smile. "Thank you," he said quietly, in response to both the compliment and the offer of candy, which he gratefully accepted. It was certainly a way to his heart, candy was. He could never get enough of it. "You're quite interesting as well, I must say." And that she was. It was rare that he could tolerate someone.
Sierra seemed amused by his snappy comment, and his scowl brightened a little as he shared in her amusement. "Perhaps not, but I can't stand being snarked at. Yes, it's a library, we're obviously not blind." And Joshua was someone surprisingly well-read, it wasn't as if he usually came to libraries for a chat. Some people just had sticks up their asses, and he didn't have the patience to deal with them. Perhaps Sierra could get along with Soren, but the guy certainly hadn't made a good impression on Joshua.
Josh grinned. "I was... what I suppose you could call a nerd - top of a lot of my classes, studied diligently... yeah, that sort of thing. My father used to joke-" Oh, he hadn't been joking. But Joshua didn't bitch about his relationship with his parents. He didn't like to mention it, "-that if I even put half the effort into sports, I'd be a pro athelete by the time I hit eighteen." Too late for that, now. He was past that 'golden age', or whatever.
