FULL NAME:
Joshua Donovan Dale GENDER:
Male AGE/DATE OF BIRTH:
Twenty, born April 23rd. SEXUAL ORIENTATION:
Heterosexual APPEARANCE:
At 6'3", Joshua has always been on the tall side. He's more slender than muscular, though the fact that he's often out and travelling with his Pokemon has developed light muscle definition on his arms and chest. He has relatively fair skin and doesn't seem to be able to acquire a tan--he'll burn in the heat of summer, but it never really amounts to any colouration in his skin.
His hair is naturally a deep jet black in colour, inherited from his father and never marred by dyes or other harmful products. He keeps it rather short and low maintenance, only giving it a trim when it starts to grow out and keeping it simple. His bangs cover his forehead but stop short of going into his eyes, seeing as he doesn't want them to get in the way of his vision. Joshua's eyes are colourless, a shade of steely gray. They're of average shape and size, but unlike some the lighting only serves to brighten or darken their colour--he has no flecks of blue or green or any other colour in them, just flat gray.
In terms of clothing, he likes it to be casual and comfortable. He comes from a background of wealth, so it's always in name brands and designer styles, but fashion has never been something that really interested him. He's only ever found in jeans unless in the case of a formal event, usually paired with a shirt and sweater, either light or heavy depending on the weather. Despite what some might assume from his rather grim demeanour at times, Joshua doesn't mind adding colour into his style. In fact, his favourite colours are green and blue rather than things like black and red.
He has no birthmarks he's aware of, and he's never really had a problem with acne or other skin problems, but that's not the worst of his worries. Instead of zits that come and go, Joshua has scars, and they're not so easily removed with skin cream. One is located on the right side of his face, angling upward across his cheek and slanted slightly in the direction of his nose. A deep scar marks the palm of his left hand--if not for an operation to repair the damage, he may have lost the use of it. He's also got a gash across his stomach, his collarbone, and two almost crescent-shaped scars running parallel under the right side of his rib-cage.
PERSONALITY:
THE POSITIVE:
HUMOROUS. Though it generally only comes out around the company of friends, he does know how to crack a joke and make someone laugh at times. He does have a darker sense of humour than a lot of people, but to those who appreciate such things he can be quite amusing.
LOYAL. He doesn't have many people whom he considers good friends. Plenty of acquaintances, perhaps, but no one whom he can really sit down and talk to, have a laugh without having to watch what he's saying around them. So when he does make a friend, he's loyal to them. How long you've been friends with Joshua and how close you are determines exactly how loyal--he'd lay down his life for his best friends, whereas he'd just stick up for those he knows a little less well.
INTELLECTUAL. He's always preferred a good book to a good conversation, so he's read quite a lot of them and made very good grades in school. He's not quite what you'd call a nerd--he doesn't walk around spouting formulas and definitions at people--but he certainly enjoys studying more than your average person. It helps him to pick up on things a little quicker and retain things that have been said to him in conversation.
CONFIDENT. He's not the type to go spitting out 'believe in yourself!' mantras, but he certainly does believe in himself. He thinks he has what it takes to eventually tackle the Pokemon league and win, after all. His issues with self-consciousness have more to do with his father and the scars that mark his skin than his feelings of self-worth.
THE NEGATIVE:
TEMPERAMENTAL. Don't get on the bad side of his temper, please. He's a force to be reckoned with--incredibly volatile, Joshua is quick to anger and hard to calm down. Not even his friends are safe from his anger; his fuse is short enough that almost anyone can light it, sometimes without intending to. However, if you're a friend of his he's less likely to become physically violent when he's in a rage, whereas enemies might get a taste of physical confrontation as well.
SUSPICIOUS. He's not very trusting of other people. If you do something nice for Joshua, he's more likely to assume that you're trying to manipulate him as opposed to just being friendly and courteous. It's possible to bypass this suspicion with patience, but it can be irritating when your nice gestures are constantly met with a brick wall of wariness.
ARROGANT. It's more of a defence mechanism to be arrogant toward others rather than a general desire to be an asshole. It has always been easier allowing people to think he doesn't want friends rather than going through the tedious motions of letting someone get close to him. It also explains why he doesn't have many.
SELF-CONSCIOUS. It's not so much a lack of self-worth as it is a constant desire for his father's approval. He feels like nothing short of extreme victories will get the attention of the man that raised him, so he tends to highly criticise himself when he's in an off mood. However, he does have confidence in himself at the same time. The two sort of balance one another out--he has good days, he has bad days. He's also very conscious of the scars. He can hide most of them by simply wearing a shirt, but the two on his palm and face are less easily concealed. PERSONAL HISTORY:
BIRTHPLACE: Hoenn Region
MOTHER: Patricia Lillian Dale FATHER: Donovan Patrick Dale
SIBLINGS: Annabel Lynne Dale (11)
OTHERS: Patrick Michael Dale (Grandfather)
Maria Nadia Cauldwell-Dale (Grandmother)
Born to a rather wealthy couple, Joshua was not an unplanned child, nor was he unwelcome. Patricia hadn't been concerned about gender but Donovan had wanted a son to carry on the family name and lineage, so he was pleased in his own gruff sort of way. They didn't plan to have more kids, however, so it would be another nine years before a sibling came into their son's life. Joshua was raised in an impressive manor with a wide variety of toys and other entertainments. He had everything most kids only dreamed of having, and perhaps that was why he had such trouble with socialising.
For the first years of his life, there were no younger kids on their street whom he could play with or get to know. Thus when Joshua was sent off to school, it was essentially his first experience with other children. He wasn't as interested in playing with action figures or rolling around in the grass, however. When other boys his age were pretending to be superheroes and doodling all over their Math papers, Joshua actually focused on listening to his teachers. This pleased them quite a lot and they had much praise toward his parents, but it also alienated him from his peers. They shunned him due to his more quiet and studious nature, so in the end education was the only thing he had.
This was a large part of what distanced him from his father. Patrick, his grandfather, had always been the type to judge a man by his muscles and interest in sports and women. As a child, Donovan Dale had been a track star as well as having Patricia (a very beautiful blonde) as his girlfriend. But Joshua was a different story. He had no interest in men, but he wasn't really preoccupied with girls, either. He was terrible at sports--Josh always did better with things that required logic as opposed to physical effort (ie. chess rather than soccer). Donovan tried to encourage him toward more 'masculine' activities, and through this caused several arguments that put an awkward barrier between them.
His mother did try to stick up for him, but she wasn't really equipped to deal with her stubborn husband. No one was; Donovan couldn't be convinced of something unless he had some shred of belief in it himself.
Annabel Lynne was born when Joshua was only nine years old, still enough of a child that his parents were a little concerned about jealousy and the subtracting of attention from their older child. However, Josh became absolutely smitten with his smaller sibling. He would talk to her even before she could talk back, he'd watch her when his mother was busy with making dinner, and he'd even allow her to climb all over him and tug his hair despite the fact that it drove him up the wall with irritation at times. He didn't have any friends at school, but he became fast friends with Annabel. He was also her protector as they grew older and she entered school--their age difference meant that he was already in high school by the time she entered elementary (in fact, he'd skipped the sixth grade due to his diligence in his studies) but he would more than gladly skip a class and go down to the school to deal with anyone that dared mess with his baby sister.
He was in his final year of high school when his parents announced they'd be moving to Cheyenne region before the year was up. Joshua was furious with them--he had a scholarship to a good university that he'd been planning to accept. But Donovan and Patricia were adamant; there was a lovely home in the region, much larger and more grand than even the manor, and they'd gotten a 'good price' on it. He was outraged that they cared more about a stupid house than his happiness and education, but he was not yet old enough to storm out and live on his own. So they packed up and moved in the summer only a month after his graduation. He was sixteen at the time.
Things passed monotonously after the move. The home was indeed luxurious and beautiful, but he was still rather bitter for the fact that he missed their old region and the comforts of familiarity. He had always been aware of Pokemon of course, and his parents had Pokemon companions of their own. Donovan's Mightyena and Patricia's Ninetales were part of his childhood, their temperaments something he'd just learned to deal with growing up. But he'd never had a companion of his own before. He'd never even really given it a thought. He was nineteen when he had a row with his father, and that--of all things!--was what kicked off his Pokemon journey. Josh was arrogant enough in his late teens that he braved a shouting match with the father he'd always feared, and he'd instinctively thrown a punch when the older man and stormed up to him. Don had hit back twice as hard, then promptly kicked his son out. With nowhere to go, Josh used what little money he had on his person to spend a few nights at a hotel, then got the idea to go to the Pokemon lab where he recieved his first companion, Eris.
He grew his team and trained for a while, not really having any other purpose but to avoid going back home. Joining up with Team Death was really a spontaneous thing--he got the offer and just decided to give it a shot. He never really had a strong sense of morality or right and wrong, so their cause appealed to him. It gave him a choice to do something almost rebellious, so he took it. He doesn't regret the decision.
However, a wrench was thrown in his journey momentarily when Donovan's mother Maria fell ill. Joshua was summoned unexpectedly back to the house (he didn't even think about refusing when he got the call) and told that they were going to be spending some time back in their home region in order to 'console' Patrick (who had always hated Joshua) and try to be there for Maria in her illness. She was expected to get better, but things took a turn for the worse and she died after only around five months. The family stayed for a while longer for Patrick's sake, but the old man turned nasty and started to verbally attack both Joshua and the rest of the family, now. Josh got angry when he turned on Annabel and nearly gave him a concussion, which decided the return to Cheyenne.
The death brought him back together with his immediate family, but he decided ultimately to continue his journey rather than giving up and settling down at home. It's where he lives and sleeps when he's not staying in the cities along the main route, but it's no longer his main focus. He does return often for the sake of seeing his sister, however, who swears she'll grow up and be just like him some day.
INFO:
He's left-handed. (: Also, the wealth of his parents is does not apply to the funding for his journey. He likes the idea of being self-sufficient and so he basically detached himself from their wealth. [/size]
