There he was, leaning against a tree with his head tilted back against the trunk. It was boring, really, with seldom anything to do. Around him, the bushes rustled from the soft breeze that blew, and the sun beamed down from the cloudless skies above.
Only the song of birds reached his sensitive ears, but it was too difficult to figure out if it were a Hoothoot, Taillow or even a Pidgey. No Pokémon seemed to be around at that particular time, despite the warmth that blessed the land. Oh well, such is life.
His back was pressed against the rough bark and he fiddled with a small, smooth, flat rock which he’d randomly found within arms reach. Raika – a Houndour – was pressed close to him, her head resting on his thigh. Her flanks rose and fell with each calm breath, and it seemed as though she was either asleep or growing close to it.
Jaysin’s icy eyes landed on his loyal companion. Shadows stretched out toward the dark type, almost calling her into their realm. Surely a Dark type would like dark places, right? But then again, Raika enjoyed the warmth of the sun – it gave her energy and made her feel better. It was a bit contradictory and confusing sometimes, not that he cared much anyway.
Swallowing the saliva in his throat, he tossed the rock into the stream, causing it to skip over the surface and then sink into its depths, drowning. He didn’t really care if he’d struck a Pokémon with it, really, not that he thought there were any around anyway. He wanted to growl for some reason, but decided it’d be best to let Raika just lie there and sleep. Perhaps when night fell, something more interesting would happen.

grumble~ gosh, this spoink was hungry! All of this bouncing gave him such and appetite, but sometimes he could not bounce, which made him weak. His weakness could temporarily be relieved by eating berries; however, he will die if he cannot keep his heart beating by bouncing! He struggled to bounce over to the trainer and the pokemon, hoping they would not attack, and looked at them with big, watery eyes. "Please, will you help me?" He said, his voice little more than a whisper. "My spring is stuck....and I'm hungry.... and I'm sorry... I shouldn't be asking...." He sighed, toppling over because it was so much effort to keep his broken self up.

Raika twitched in her sleep, shifting slightly and rubbing her head against Merrick’s leg contently. Slender paws flexed, claws glinting as she relaxed against her Trainer. Merrick was awake and he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, which let her relax somewhat. After being on guard all day, it was nice to just kick back and enjoy the sounds of nature while you dozed off into a much welcomed slumber.
But suddenly her ears perked; her mind instantly sharpened. Something approached, and her eyes flicked open. She was on her paws in an instant, the fur on her neck bristling. The soft grass and leaves beneath her paws were dry but smooth, and her paws spread out for balance. It was a Spoink – a Pokémon that bounced, and had a pearl on its head. Is the pearl valuable? She thought. Would Alpha like it if I got the pearl for him?
Merrick, however, simply stared at the Pokémon as it approached, and then rose to his feet. It was a Spoink, he recognised that much, but he despised and feared Psychic Pokémon. Why? He felt it was instinctive, being a Croagunk Pokémorph, but nevertheless he felt threatened, and when he was threatened, he became aggressive. Immediately, the Trainer became defensive, the air around him changing to tension.
Raika stiffened, sensing the energy change that her alpha was giving off. She sensed discomfort, agitation and a bit of fear, and in response she dropped into a hunting crouch, ears drawn back and lips peeled in the beginning of a snarl. “No, you shouldn’t,” she drawled, leering at the Psychic Pokémon before her. She drew back a breath to shoot a ball of ember at the Spoink, but she was surprised when a cloud of purple gas sprayed out instead, drifting straight toward the pig-like Pokémon.
What is that? She thought, mildly surprised. She hadn’t meant to use that move, but ever since Kai – a Shadow Croagunk – had massaged her using his poison after she’d been injured, she’d been able to create that gas from her maw. Perhaps Kai can enlighten me. Is it a side-effect of that massage? Am I meant to be able to do this?

Unfortunately he bounced to a trainer with no heart and a pokemon who was either too cowardly to fight back, or simply as cold blooded as the trainer. The poison gas mixed around his body and suddenly one side of his spring began to rust a bit as it gave out completely and left him plopped on the ground.
He was also a bit intimidated by the leer that came from the Houndour but that took a back seat to his fear of his heart stopping at this moment. He quickly started to crawl and muster any strength to bounce but simply began to splash back and forth, doing nothing. >Please! Please help me! I'm dying... I'm dying...< He said, weakly. His heart started to slow down more and more, and after one more turn he probably would die right on the spot.
>Please...< He said again before almost fainting.

Raika froze as the Spoink’s pleas reached her ears, but not because of the desperation she heard there. It was because her Alpha had not said a word; she’d attacked without his authorization. Uncertainty filled her, and she looked back, her eyes expectantly landing on the man. Should she continue the assault? He looked livid, as though he had no objections. It didn’t seem like she would have too much trouble taking out the Spoink. For some reason, the Psychic type already seemed to be weak, but as she quickly scanned over the pig-nosed Pokémon, she noticed the spring beneath it was twisted and looked as though it were weakened somehow.
Her ebony ears twitched and she stood still, awaiting his orders this time. The Spoink seemed to be on the verge of death, she realised, and a twisted smile appeared on the Houndour as she watched her prey writhe on the ground, trying vainly to rise once more. Would it get up? She wasn’t sure, to be honest. Instinct took over and she dropped back into the hunting crouch, her fur bristling and claws digging into the earth beneath her. But she remained in position despite the urges her mind told her to attack her prey. She continued to leer at the flailing Spoink.
“Don’t waste too much energy playing with it, Raika,” Jaysin murmured darkly, weighing each word. “Burn it alive. Use Ember.” Sure, it was incredibly cruel, but there was nothing merciful about Merrick. He felt a wave of satisfaction from the Houndour when he finally gave her an order, and smirked to himself at whatever was about to unfold. Death was nothing new in his eyes. He’d seen it before. Life stretched out as many paths that people took in their lives, but in the end, they all merged into that one that led to the end.
“Can I keep the pearl?” Raika drawled silkily as she approached the Spoink, her eyes gleaming with contentment.
“If you want,” Jaysin motioned for her to do as she wished, and Raika opened her maw. A swirling, hot ball of flame gathering between her fangs, drawing energy from her core. A second later, she lunged for the pearl and spat the fire at the Spoink, though if she’d secured the bright pink object – which probably had no use anyway – she didn’t know. What would happen now...?

"Please, please stop," the spoink begged, lying on its side and no longer able to bounce since his springs were tied up once again. Why was this Pokémon and trainer being so cruel? Did they not know that they could not just help a Pokémon in need. The leer made the spoink shudder, lowering his defense, and when the fire took over his body he could feel his seared body burning like the ashes of a great bonfire. "Please, please..... oh god please..." The spoink begged, eyes red and burning from the fire and the tears. [/blockquote]

A tiny pang of pity shot through Merrick. What was he doing? He was torturing a Pokémon that had come asking for help. Given he didn’t like helping others unless he got something out of it – and a Psychic type, no less? The Psychic type couldn’t hurt him as it were now, and hearing the Spoink’s pleas made him feel only that bit more powerful. Was it worth it? Could he go through with it?
If I don’t then I probably never will, he reasoned mentally as he watched the Spoink. Besides, if it had come for help then it probably wouldn’t last too much longer anyway. It seemed like a bit of a clumsy Pokémon and it looked somewhat sick. Only the strongest will survive, he reminded himself. Pokémon that cannot take care of themselves do not deserve help. But he didn’t get any satisfaction from the pleas, in fact it made him feel almost as though he were beginning to doubt himself.
Raika seemed to have blocked out the Spoink completely and was staring at him in curious confusion. What was wrong with him? She was about to call out and ask what she should be doing now. The pink orb beneath her paw glinted in the firelight and reflected the flames, but she seemed to have lost interest in that as well. He didn’t seem as though he were eager to finish off the prey, or perhaps was it something else? Her ears perked up and she stood to attention.
Realising that he’d been hesitating, Merrick turned on Raika and spat, “What’re you standing there for!? Attack!” The urgency in his voice, which he’d never admit to later, made her flinch in surprise and she turned back to the Spoink. Her alpha was acting strangely now. She was worried. Nevertheless, she took in a deep breath and fired another Ember at the Spoink, mentally berating herself for the hesitation. Was there doubt in her pack...?

The sight was terrible and a few pokemon around dropped a few teardrops before they left the scenery.
What remained was a Koffing who had seen the entire battle and felt so horrible for that poor Spoink that she took it upon herself to make Merrick and his pokemon pay for their actions. >Hey you! Asshole! You will pay for that!< She yelled before sending a thick black smoke at the Houndour to prevent it from seeing.
>I will make you pay for what you did! What the hell did he do to you?!< She asked, getting angrier and more aggressive with each minute.

Raika stared at the dead Spoink and fiddled with the pearl beneath her paw. What was she meant to do now? She glanced back at Merrick and licked her lip, tasting the charred ember that she had produced. Merrick simply stared at the Spoink before turning away, and moved to spin on his heel when his ears caught sound. “Raika, jump!” He hissed sharply, and Raika suddenly kicked off with her hind paws, soaring into the air. Where she had been a moment earlier, smoke suddenly sprayed, and she gasped slightly. She’d almost got herself into danger! Her lips peeled back in anger.
“Thank you, Alpha,” Raika growled, and then prepared to attack. Merrick gazed at the Koffing for a moment before she received her order. “Fall back?” She stared at her Alpha, dumbstruck, and blinked her wide eyes. Merrick glanced at her and she shrunk back with a nod, curious as to why he’d ordered such a thing. Returning to his side, she sat down and stared at her paws. Merrick reached for two Pokeballs, releasing them both onto the field.
First came Tōshirō – an Aron that had been born in the Library and never battled. Tōshirō blinked his tired eyes and looked up at the Koffing, making a babyish sound and waving his arms up curiously at the purple ball. From the second ball came Vixen – a Gorebyss that hovered over the ground using a small amount of psychic power, watching the scene with mild interest. “Hey,” Tōshirō smiled widely at the Koffing, “You’re purple. I like purple.”
Merrick clenched his teeth. “Tōshirō,” he called, “Prepare for battle.” Tōshirō glanced at his mother – or so he believed him to be his mother – curiously. “Battle?” He questioned, and blinked tiredly, looking back at the Koffing. “Does he want me to fight you? Why?” Vixen twisted in the air, her voice unusually soft and motherly for the Pokemon. “Don’t question his orders, child. Just do as you are told.” Tōshirō glanced back to Vixen and just nodded, blinking his innocent eyes at Koffing. So... What exactly was he meant to do?

Used Poison Gas and Tackle The koffing was shocked at what the trainer did. Why did he call back the pokemon which killed his friend? This was a personal fight, and then a new pokemon was sent out to fight him instead. "Hmph, are you a weakling then?" the koffing said, directing it straight at the houndour, before focusing his attention on the aron and the water type. "This for my friend! CHARGE" he shouted, whilst at the same time he let loose a gas from his body to the water type, before he charged head first at the aron.

Raika wanted so much to tear the Koffing limb from limb for the insult, but she forced herself to remain by Jaysin’s side, her stubby black tail twitching in agitation. The Koffing sprayed out a beam of toxic gas at Vixen, who tried to hold her breath against the fumes. Seconds later, though, she was forced to gasp in a breath of air, and started to choke as she writhed away from the cloud. Aron took the Tackle harsh with a squeal of surprise and shook his head in surprise. He had only been trying to be friendly! Why was the Koffing being so mean? He didn’t understand.
As the Koffing’s attack ended, Tōshirō took a step back and scraped his foot over the ground before ramming himself towards the Koffing in a powerful Rock type attack – Head Smash. It was the only thing he could do at the time, and it was what came to him instinctively. Gorebyss, who had just caught her breath, summoned a stream of water from nearby, gathering it in a ring around herself. Her eyes glowed with anger and she projected her mind toward the Koffing, pulses of energy - Confusion - pooling around the Poison Type in an attempt to subdue it.
“Ignore that disgusting piece of scum, Raika,” Merrick muttered bluntly, narrowing his icy eyes at the Poison type. It didn’t bother him because he was resistant to poisonous substances. Raika’s ears twitched and she looked back up toward her Alpha. “This Koffing will soon join it’s ‘friend’. Besides,” Jaysin raised his voice with a sneer, “I don’t think this Koffing wants a three-on-one battle.” Raika’s eyes widened slightly and she drew her ears back in surprise. Was her Alpha defending her? No, it was more like he was comforting her. She kneaded the pink gem with her paws and snatched it up in her mouth, offering it to him. Though he didn’t look too interested in it, he lowered his hand and took it from her, examining it.
It would have no value. He knew this, and part of it wanted to tell her that, but instead he remained quiet and turned his attention back to the battle. He noticed Vixen cringe as the poison in her system spread, but resolved to do nothing about it just yet. ‘She should learn how to fight at a disadvantage,’ he told himself. ‘Besides, if I bother to heal her, the chances are she’ll simply become poisoned again in a few more turns.’

Ouch. That was the only word that came into the koffing's mind when he was first struck with the head smash. Even though the aron was still weak, the move was enough to cause some damage. Then came the confusion attack. The koffing start moving about, trying to get away from the invisible foe, but alas he couldn't move at all, so he had to suffer the pain before falling to the floor. He slowly made his way back up, before giving both evil glares. The koffing was now annoyed, and it was shown when he puffed out some black smoke from his body straight at the water type. "That..... was quite good." he managed to splutter out. "But I I'll make things even better!" he shouted, before charging at the Aron again, trying to knock some sense into him.

Gorebyss backed away a bit once the Confusion hit, leaving Aron standing in the middle of the clearing before the Koffing. Vixen could see that ‘Shiro was not going to take another hit like that, and she felt tangible relief when she saw the baby roll clumsily out of the way just before he was hit. Aron backed away, his eyes wide, and Vixen surged forward, her body turning silver briefly before gleaming as it hardened. Her eyes glowed blue once more and the pink Water type sent another pulse of energy towards the Koffing. If it hit, she’d hold the Pokémon in place, try to give Aron enough time to hit her and then throw the Koffing down.
“Use Head Smash!” Jaysin ordered, and Shiro flinched slightly, but complied. Gathering his strength, he charged forward and leapt, attempting to ram the Koffing with his head. ‘He didn’t seem to feel that last Head Smash,’ Jaysin realised, inclining his head up to watch the battle unfold. ‘Is that because of his Rock Head ability?’ Even so, the Aron was probably going to faint on the next turn, whether he was hit or not.

::koffing:: Pokemon encounter ! The Koffing once again was hit by the coming Confusion attack, which, according to the Gorebyss' plan, allowed the Head Smash to hit dead on once again. Luckily for the poisonous puffball, neither of the attacks were critical. She was just barely conscious, but good to go for one more turn at most.
Too weak to say anything, the Koffing lunged at the baby Aron and attempted a last-ditch Tackle on the baby pokemon. If she was gonna fall, she was going to take someone with him - which was quite hypocritical, as targeting the small Aron made herself kind of a bully as well. ::koffing:: Level 10 - F Attacks: Poison Gas, Tackle, Smog, Smokescreen Personality: Always looks out for her friends. Vixen seemed a bit anxious when she watched the Koffing attack the baby Aron. Wasn’t he going to heal him before he became too weak to fight? She angled her pointed nose towards her Trainer, but he seemed to just stare out as the Koffing charged. Why wasn’t he moving or ordering Raika – who was close enough to block the attack – to defend him? Jaysin’s eyes seemed cold and devoid of emotion, and Vixen felt herself unsure of what she should do at that point. It was then that she heard the pained squeak of Aron being flung to the ground, and the poor child did not rise again.
“Bastard!” Vixen roared, putting as much strength into her next Confusion attack as she could muster. The ring of water wriggled as the energy flew at the wild Koffing, which was only strengthened by her own emotions. “You’re nothing but a bully!” She coiled around the Aron protectively, her eyes glittering with anger. Her body hardened, just in case the Koffing somehow evaded or survived the attack and sent another attack their way.

The battle was over, as far as he was concerned. The Koffing lay unconscious a short distance away, but so did Tōshirō, unfortunately. Still, the Steel-Rock type had performed well against a level ten, and that counted for something. But now Merrick was wondering what to do about the Koffing. They weren’t usually around this area, which meant it was probably roaming from somewhere. It had a pretty nasty attitude, which he didn’t really care about, but it was still an unusual Pokémon to find in Route One. Still, he doubted that even if he did manage to capture it, the creature would obey his commands.
‘Perhaps I can trade it,’ he thought, ‘but who would want such an ugly creature?’ Reaching out with a Pokéball, he recalled Tōshirō and Vixen and continued to stare at the unconscious poison type. “What do you think, Raika?” He drawled lazily, “Should I try and capture it or not?” Raika’s lip curled up in disgust at the thought of sharing a team with the ugly creature. “We already have enough Pokémon on the team, don’t you think?”
“Maybe we can sell it,” Raika growled, “Failing that, we can use it as a punching bag. The ugly thing would poison us if we tried to eat it. Or explode...” Suddenly Kai appeared from his Pokéball. The sneaky Croagunk cackled a few times, eyeing Raika oddly and then went over to the poison type and nudged her. They already had Kai on their team, so they didn’t require another Poison type, but still...
Having made up his mind, Merrick grabbed an empty Pokéball and tossed it harshly at the form. If it refused to follow orders and he couldn’t sell it – if it stayed in the ball, of course - he was sure he could dump it at the Pound. If not, it would simply be abandoned somewhere where it would hopefully cause more trouble for others.

Grabbed Koffing's Pokeball! Began playing with it.
The Pokeball hit the floating mass of poison and sucked it inside. Her being out cold meant she had no way of knowing she was being caught. The Koffing was then caught, now a Trainer's Pokemon. However, something dashed out from the bushes and grabbed its Pokeball before anyone could make a move.
A Zigzagoon had grabbed the Pokeball. Then, began tossing it around. A trace like state the Zigzagoon began chanting, <Pretty pretty shiny shiny.> She then tossed it around back and fourth to herself. It was so pretty...and shiny. How could she not love it? However, her use of language was low. She didn't say much, just oo's and ah's. She then noticed the Pokemon that were staring at her and she backed up. Her fur on end and the Pokeball behind her. <MINE!> She screamed. Someone's insane.

Perfect. He had one Pokémon unconscious and the other poisoned, and now he had to deal with some nutter-rat that decided to try and nick his Koffing. Merrick growled deep in his throat and reached for some other Pokéballs.
‘I don’t have time for this shit,’ he thought, throwing a command at Croagunk, which immediately let out an ear-wrenching screech and landed harshly on the ground before the Zigzagoon. “Retrieve that Pokéball,” he grumbled, and Kai immediately obeyed with a curt ‘keh!’
For a heartbeat the shadowy aura around him flared menacingly and seeped into his body, causing his eyes to radiate a sun-golden hue. Taking a stance, he paused and then stared at the Zigzagoon. Kai looked quite pleased to be in the action again, shown by a wide, sneaky grin over the poison frog’s face.
“Naughty little rodent taking what doesn’t belong to you,” Kai snickered darkly, “That’s my job, not yours. If you give it back, though, I might play with you, and give you something even shinier... You see that pink pearl over there? It’s not just shiny, it’s valuable. Holds magical powers that will attract very shiny things to you, in fact. How about a trade?”
Offering the Spoink's pearl (Claiming it has "magical properties") as a trade for the Pokeball.

Zigzagoon kept switching her vision from the beautiful pearl to the pokeball and back. Although the pearl WAS shiny, it didn't seem like it would have magical properties. <MY PRETTY PRETTY SHINY SHINY. MINE.> she said stubbornly, keeping her eyes on the metallic ball. <What magical powers does that other pretty pretty shiny shiny have?> she said, pawing at the red and white sphere cautiously. If she was to give up her pretty pretty shiny shiny, it'd have to be for a better one. ::Zigzagoon:: Lv 8 | Female Gluttony | Pickup Growl - Tackle - Tail Whip PRETTY PRETTY SHINY SHINY IDIOT
