Laboratories weren't really her thing. She'd been in labs dedicated to studying Pokemon ailments and they were stuffy with recycled air and every little sound was magnified by the large, empty, echoing rooms. They were all florescent lights and sterile tables and nurses and doctors and professors in scrubs or lab coats, snapping on disposable latex gloves. She'd gone on her journey to leave those things behind and no way would she allow her new partner to come from such conditions, egg moves or not. Besides, where was the element of surprise and serendipity if she got to choose what she wanted?! It sounded so much more fun and adventurous if her new partner, her new bestest-best friend, could be anything! She was sure they'd get along, no matter what type or species. As she stepped off the bus and lugged her backpack onto her shoulders, her imagination could just see it now! Her and a Growlithe sniffing out cute little homey diners in the city. A Pidove flying high above her as she hiked along a forest trail. Sleeping in her sleeping bag with a Pachirisu all snuggled up against her, getting fluffy tail hair up her nose. Sue looked up with a start as the giant tent came into view and she took off into a light jog, breath huffing with exertion. Maybe she'd packed a bit too heavy but better safe than sorry! Snappily-dressed Rangers and their partners were about and Sue wandered up to the nearest one. "Excuse me," she paused to gulp in cool, crisp air, "where do I go to get a Pokemon?" She paused to think for a moment before sticking her hand out. "My name's Suzanne but, like, everyone calls me Sue! And I am soooo excited like you wouldn't believe!"

KATHRYN AND SKYDANCE "SHUT THE FUCK UP!" As Suzanne moved to the nearest Ranger, a rock was hurled out and almost beamed the Trainer right in the face, if the Ranger hadn’t caught it in time. Throwing it back into the tent, she giggled as a pained exclamation of “OHEY!” followed by countless expletives was shrieked at the top of someone’s lungs. This caused many Rangers to instantly look awkward, and one dashed into the tent to silence the man before he could start using anything even worse than he was. Rolling her eyes, Kathryn smiled at the newcomer and silently gave her a starter kit. Bah, it had been so loud around here recently that it was just boring. “My name is Kathryn,” said Kathryn jovially, “And...” She shielded her eyes from the sun and stared straight up, trying to catch sight of her partner. Damnit, he’d gone! She whistled loudly. A flash of blue signalled the arrival of one Pokémon, who turned up the earth beneath his colossal talons as he landed and folded in his wings. “This is Skydance,” Kathryn smiled, climbing up onto her cherished Braviary’s back. “Climb on and we’ll find your Pokémon.”YOU RECIEVED A BAG OF PORNER, I MEAN THE STARTER KIT ENJOY. x 5 x 3 x1 x 1 x 1 x 1

The rock-hurling and swear-wording did little to faze Sue. She was glad her new buddy Kathryn was so good at catch, though, or at least her face was! A busted nose or black eye wasn't the way to start an adventure, even if she did pack a first aid kit in case of emergencies. Pokemon training was serious business and it wouldn't do to bleed all over everything in case she fell or whatever. "Sweet catch, Kathryn!" She took the starter kit offered and tucked it safely in a pocket where the fancy PokeDex wouldn't get broken or the berries get squashed. Let's see, the Oran berry restored health, the Cheri berry cured paralysis (and was excellent in salsa), while the Pecha berry cured poison and sweet tooths. Sue supposed there were plenty of bug-types around if she had to worry about poison. She'd have to be on her guard! She smiled brightly at the large bird Kathryn had befriended. Though his beak was sharp and his talons deadly, she climbed aboard with little hesitation. She settled in behind Kathryn and smoothed out any feathers she had ruffled before wrapping her arms around the Ranger's waist. "He must be really well-trained! I'm sure he'll find me a good one!"

KATHRYN AND SKYDANCE Kathryn grinned cheerily at Sue as she complimented her catching skills. Truthfully she was a horrible catcher – she’d just got lucky. She was calmly surprised when Sue clambered up onto Skydance with little hesitation. Usually new Trainers would be bricking themselves at the sight of the magnificent beast! Oh well, there were still plenty of things to do, so Kathryn nodded once at her shiny friend and dug her heels into his side.
She didn’t straddle the Pokémon’s shoulders; she was more kneeling with her legs folded outwards and to the side. She pulled her crimson cap down slightly to shield her eyes from the light, and checked that she had everything she needed. Skydance chirruped in a very red-tailed hawk-like manner and released his talons from the ground, leaving some very large holes where his ebony claws had been. The white ‘mane’ around his neck – the head feathers that flowed back towards Kathryn – shifted as his friend delved her hands into the mass and found her normal gripping place.
“Right, let’s go!”
Skydance’s wings shot out from his side, spanning at least three times his body, and he flapped them once. He didn’t need to even take a running lunge; he was in the air in an instant, his light but gargantuan body tackling the breeze with little effort. When they were safely over the forest, he started to search, his keen eyes flicking back and forth. A screech echoed from beside him and his head turned as he flew straight ahead. What was it? Of course, it was a friendly Pidgeot scanning the area. He chirped in greeting and the tips of his mouth edged up slightly in a smile, and the Pidgeot returned a nod before diving down. Skydance continued his trek higher up, and the air continued to get colder until it the skies were his domain.
“Skydance, over there!”
Kathryn, having sharp grey eyes, inclined her head over to where there was a bright light shining. What was it? It was hard to tell; but it was something shiny, she knew that much. Skydance rolled as he angled himself to glide towards whatever it was, and he screeched to alert any bird Pokémon of his presence. When he was around, it was as clear as day that the forest was his domain. Any territorial attempts to attack on his domain were not appreciated.
Struggling, trapped in a Galvantula's net was a Ferroseed. The Ferroseed was clicking with clear agitation and didn't look at all happy to be stuck, but the net was huge! It was probably a good thing that Kathryn had seen the deperate Pokemon, because it might have been eaten otherwise. The net was suspended above the ground, so if they wanted to free the Ferroseed, they'd have to climb up the net and untangle it. But the Ferroseed looked as though it would attack anyone that tried to touch it at that point. Damn!
"Right, stay here," Kathryn glanced at Sue and dismounted from Skydance's back. Slowly she started to climb up the tree, and clung to the net, but it was so large... She'd need help...

Kathryn's call had been just enough warning for Sue to brace for take-off but she was still jostled by Skydance taking to the air. She grabbed fistfuls of feathers as the ground shrank below her and the wind began to sting her face. She let out a giddy whoop. Looking straight down, her heart jumped into her throat from the exhilaration at seeing the forest below stretch out like her grandmother's green shag carpet. A slight lurch of vertigo as they went higher made her palms clammy with sweat but then the Ranger had spotted something and they made a gentle descent back to terra firma. Despite being told to stay there, Sue slid from the Braviary's back and gave him a pat before going to see what was up. Oh, there was a spiky pinecone stuck in a web! She shrugged her backpack from her shoulders and began to plunder through it...blast! "Great, nothing in here that'll help. Hold on a sec, Kath, I'm coming up!" She cracked her knuckles before starting to shimmy ungracefully up the tree. "It's okay, little guy, help is on the way!" Her hands were soon raw from gripping branches and she had a bit of dirt in her eye that was making it water. A bit out of breath, she finally reached the Ranger and perched herself on a sturdy branch before rubbing her eyes. "Maybe we should have gotten your bird to do this, huh? Is there a move called Swoop or Rescue?"

KATHRYN AND SKYDANCE Kathryn had prepared to start climbing up the net, but as soon as she reached up onto the first part of the gooey substance, she glanced down at Sue as she appeared. What the hell? Kathryn turned back towards Sue and grimaced as though she’d found something particularly weird. “I thought I told you to stay down there? It’s dangerous up here!”Skydance chirruped from below and reached up a wing in an attempt to hold the tree steady. “Be careful,” he warned, staring up at the tree. Unfortunately he didn’t really have any way to get the Ferroseed free. Unless... That’s it! Skydance angled his head up, his beak towering over the trainers, and took the web in his beak. He tugged on it gently, creating something akin to a rope ladder, and held it in place. They could climb up it hopefully, but he just didn’t want the Galvantula to come back and accuse him of trying to destroy the nest. Kathryn curled her fingers around the thick strands and started to climb up it. It was sturdier than it looked by far, but it was also very sticky... "Yeah, well, you look like you needed help!" Well, actually, Kathryn seemed to have things under control but Sue wanted to be in on the action. It wouldn't do for her to watch on the sidelines as the Ranger played hero and rescued the spiky thing, even if that was technically a Ranger's job. At least she was kind of staying out of the way... Skydance tugged on the web, creating a sticky ladder up to the Ferroseed and Sue grimaced. She knew their webs were strong, but strong enough to support a human? She stayed on the tree, not trusting the web to hold both of them, and bit her lip. If Kathryn fell, surely Skydance would catch her, right? "Just kinda, yeah, a little to your left, okay watch out for that branch over there!" Yelling instructions was about all she could do but she did it well. The Ferroseed seemed to be taking things in stride cause it was just...sitting there or maybe it was poisoned or paralyzed or something? Well it was a good thing she had those berries in her bag then! And at least the owner of this web wasn't at home. Wouldn't that be a funny thing to explain?

KATHRYN AND SKYDANCE Ah, the typical novice Trainer wanting in on the action. Kathryn smiled to herself. She remembered when she had been like that. Hell, she still was in some ways, but that’s not the point. The web was sticky, and it would have been easier to just break it and catch the Ferroseed as it fell. But this was some Pokémon’s home – they’d taken a long time to build it so she needed to be very careful to not destroy it. A ranger’s job was to protect Pokémon and preserve their habitats. Sue was howling instructions up at her, which kept her in focus and made sure she didn’t fall. She was grateful, especially since she hadn’t seen the branch and it would have been a bad thing if she had stood on it. After about half a minute more of careful climbing she was at the Ferroseed’s side, and it stared at her in a somewhat deadpanning manner. “Alright, let’s get you free, Ferroseed,” smiled the Trainer, reaching toward it slowly. Her hands curled around the Ferroseed’s form and she carefully tugged on a bit of net here and there, trying to free the Pokémon. She smiled at it warmly as she made her attempts to free it. However, life was not on Kathryn’s side, and as soon as she reached the last bit of net, a shadow crept onto the net. “Kathryn!” Skydance called through a muffled beak, “Galvantula has returned!”Kathryn froze, staring out across the net as a colossal yellow spider crept onto the net, staring at her with several eyes. Kathryn, who was deathly scared of spiders, swallowed and tightened her grip on the net. The Galvantula approached, but stopped a short distance away, and stared at the Ferroseed and Ranger in her net. Teamwork was about to prevail and Sue leaned forward in excitement as Kathryn neared the Ferroseed. It would be untangled soon enough and then free to do...whatever it was they did. She figured they sat around like Pinecos but they weren't a species Sue was familiar with. Oh! Or maybe it would be grateful for Sue helping to rescue it and it would decide to be her partner! She could see it now, her and her pointy pine cone panhandling for money and whooping the snot out of other trainers. She was soon so distracted by these thoughts that the giant yellow and blue spider didn't even catch her attention until Kathryn yelled at her. Startled, she looked up and saw the web's owner had arrived. Yet instead of immediately attacking, it seemed to just be watching Kathryn and Ferroseed. The Ranger seemed frightened, not that Sue blamed her, and was motionless on the sticky net. "H-hey there Big Spider! Please don't eat, hurt, or maim my friend! We're just, y'know, rescuing Pokemon in distress!" She waved to try and get the spider's attention without seeming too threatening. Then again, the thing was like two feet tall and could electrocute her to a crisp if it really wanted to. And to top things off, the sky was growing dark with the threat of rain.

KATHRYN AND SKYDANCE A Ranger? Galvantula knew them. They came around the area every now and again making sure that nobody was hurt and that everyone was safe. They were like the guardians of her home, but that still didn't excuse the fact that this one was invading her home, with a giant bird of prey pulling on the net. Sure, she'd come to save the Ferroseed, but there was still no excuse. "You shouldn't be here," said the Galvantula simply, crawling over a few more paces but stopping a short distance away. This was her net; she'd worked hard on it, and she didn't want it to break. "I'm very sorry for the intrusion," Kathryn scratched the back of her head anxiously and smiled at the giant spider. KILL IT WITH FIRE! "I'm just trying to help out this Ferroseed. I promise I'll leave after I've freed it."The Galvantula wasn't quite sure if she should believe the ranger or not. As she went back to work pulling the net about, the Galvantula winced and inched forward. No, no! She was going to break it like that! "Stop that!" Demanded the Galvantula, crawling over to the Ranger and frowning. "You're going to break it! Let me help.""KEEP IT AWAY!" Woah! The Ferroseed sure had a pair of lungs on him. The screech was loud and unexpected; it made Kathryn stumble and almost fall from her perch. "SPIDERS! NOOOOO!!!" Male & Level 5 Iron Barbs Tackle & Harden Generally a very talkative Pokémon. Sue held her breath anxiously as the spider approached the pair. She exhaled in relief when the spider didn't attack but instead seemed to be talking to Kathryn. Maybe understanding Pokemon was something Sue would learn eventually, but for now all she heard was clicking and low grumbles. The Ferroseed was nearly pulled free when its loud fearful screech made Sue's ears ring. Even if she couldn't understand a word it said, the meaning was quite clear. "Chill out, little tyke, we won't let the spider eat you! I mean, I've got some Berries down there is she's that hungry, so calm your tits and we'll get you free." She grabbed a piece of the web and made a face at the sticky texture. She slowly inched her way onto the net, not wanting to leave Kathryn alone in dealing with the pair of Pokemon.

The Ferroseed was struggling and struggling to get out, while the somewhat helpful Galvantula was making sure the effort was done without her nest breaking, the Ferroseed was eventually rescued at the temptation of food to calm himself down. As soon as he was yanked out, he sat happily on Sue's lap as Skydance nodded once to the electric type, before carrying the group back to the front of the ranger station.
<Well that was fun. I'm going to tell that to all of my grandchildren one day, assuming I live.> The Ferroseed commented with a jolly whistle while Kathryn was briefly still in shock from encountering the Galvantula. They were safe, they were sound, she repeated. She glanced over at the trainer and the Pokemon for a second before sighing, just glad that was over with.
"Down, Skydance!" She demanded, and soon they were on the soft grass in front of the Ranger Station, and she easily slipped right off. "Welp, you got this covered. But let me do the hard part for ya." She giggled, throwing a Pokeball out of nowhere at the Ferroseed and capturing it easily, even though he screamed out of surprise. A bit exaggerated, but ok. "That was a record time capture, but professional enough." She said with a laugh, leaning against Skydance as he waited for the other passenger to get off.

A crisis was averted and soon enough Sue was gingerly holding the Ferroseed in her lap, trying to not poke a spike in a sensitive spot. This wasn't the most cuddly Pokemon she'd ever met and it was heavy. To top things off, she had to put her heavy backpack on and carry Ferroseed on Skydance's back as they all returned to the Ranger Station. Her thighs were aching from being stuck with thorns and trying to stay balanced on the bird. She almost wanted to set up her sleeping bag now for a nap but then Kathryn had captured the Ferroseed and its loud scream once again made her ears ring and head ache. Ugh. "Ummm, yeah, that was some trip, huh?" She took the PokeBall which was thankfully much lighter than the Pokemon inside. It snapped nicely onto her belt for easy reaching. Everything else was in order and she shook Kathryn's hand gratefully and scratched under Skydance's beak. "Next time I see you, I'll have a team full of Ariados and Galvantula!"On to Route 1!
