NICHOLAS ANDY DIAS twenty-one years of age male // bisexual
appearance * If it weren't for his beautiful green eyes, Nick would be nothing but Joe Shmoe. They're unlike others; bright, clear, and yet filled with so much depth. Hardship riddles his eyes, each twinkling of his eye showing yet another bout of his pain throughout the years. With jet black hair that folds down near eye-length, seeming to be straightened but, really, it is naturally plain like that.
With a gentle muscular tone, Nick has a handsome appeal -- once he takes off his shirt. His skin is in-between being tan and absolutely plain and ordinary (ok, really he's not that plain -- it's just how he perceives himself.)
Nick's attire is fairly basic. You'll mainly see him in hoodies (usually of a darker variety) and pants, with comfortable sneakers that fit snugly on his foot. He doesn't mind the heat; he grew up in such a hot area, that anywhere else seems to be almost cool.
personality * Since leaving behind his family and traveling on his own for several years, Nick's not as quiet as he used to be, and will speak a little more openly, now. His shadow has become less of a moment of fear; he has begun to realize that he doesn't have to keep looking behind him, worrying about who would catch him doing something wrong next. His niceness continues to be a prominent feature, and his friendliness to his Pokemon has only blossomed.
Though he has some sour moments, Nick has managed to keep most of his depression and frustration at bay, now. It was hard, at first - he found two guys that he liked, and both of them up and left him for no reason at all. His heart still aches for Mikhail, who he'd truly begun to love before he disappeared. Unsure of where he is, and having heard no word of him, he has begun to give him up -- though occasionally he still longs for his best companion.
Nick is bothered by people who feel the need to gloat about money, or any other material objects. He feels that it isn't necessary to care about these things -- and that shouldn't make who you are. He feels very adamant about being yourself; he also believes that it is ridiculous to try and change yourself for others. He only seems to get angry when people try to tell him that he should be a certain way. He feels the need to be himself -- he doesn't want people telling him who he should be. That is one of the reasons he chose to become a Pokemon trainer and leave his old household.
Being fairly intelligent, Nick is also fairly good at training Pokemon. Since he first began in other regions after leaving his family, his understanding of Pokemon and how battling works has reached a tenfold, and with a renewed respect, Nick is quickly beginning to show his true colors and become a powerful foe to fear. However, as he is starting over in a new region, he's sure to find a few bumps in the road as well.
history * Nick Dias never knew who his parents were. His real parents, that is -- but he always imagined that they would have been better than his adoptive parents. The note that was stuck at the orphanage in his home region of Sotoa with his unloved body announced the reasons: financial problems, they loved him, but they just couldn't raise a child and be able to feed everyone. He stayed there until a young, rich couple who couldn't have a baby of their own came to the orphanage one day and found him, snuggled in warm blankets. It was the mother who had really wanted a child no matter what; the father struggled with the thought of raising a child that was not his own.
He'd never imagined that his step-mother was not his own; she had the same black hair, as well as similar green eyes. She was beautiful, and kind, and gentle... everything that Nick craved. But when he was six, his step-father had had enough: suddenly, Nick's world came crashing down as he learned the truth; he was adopted. He wasn't their son.
His "father" began to treat Nick like he was the scum of the earth. Once financial troubles began to strike the family, he blamed it on him. When his mother's father died, it was Nick's fault, not cancer. Whenever his mother was late in cooking dinner, it was his fault for being a nuisance to her, not because his father had come home early. Often, when his father was angry like this, he would threaten him with the fact that he was adopted -- taunted him, reminding him that just as easily as they had picked him up off the streets, they could drop him off there again.
His mother was unable to do anything for him. Nick began to hate her, too, for not standing up for the adopted son she had said again and again she loved. She flinched back, scared that the harsh words would eventually be aimed at her if she dared to try standing up for her only son. Agonized and forced to live up to his step-father's expectations, he was forced to grow up in a way that was entirely different from the way h wanted.
It was one day at school that the students were brought into a seminar, where a man from a foreign region, Kanto, spoke and presented Pokemon to the class. Dazed and amazed that such creatures existed, Nick yearned to learn more about them. It was announced that the school would soon be releasing a club to learn everything about Pokemon. Nick signed up at once; he was determined to find something in life to love.
When he came home and told his mother about everything in school that day, her father overheard and became more angry than he had ever come before. He threatened to not only kick him out on the street - but to also make sure the only thing on that street would be his skin and bones. No son of his would frolic around with those pitiful creatures. He should become a strong and sturdy businessman like himself. When his father found out that he began to visit the club in secret, he pulled Nick from school at the ripe age of seventeen.
Crushed without any promise of hope, Nick quickly began to fall into a depressive slump. His father's tyraids were never-ending now; every day he was threatened to be kicked out, and now he was often being beaten for his failures in life. No matter what, Nick was not allowed to go back to that retched school. Nick was to become his father's apprentice; if he didn't, he might as well be dead.
At the age of eighteen, his father told him the time had come: he would be joining him at work that next day, and would be expected to perform at 100%. When he messed up just once that first day, his father came home and beat him more than he'd beaten him ever before. Pain and bruises screamed on his skin, and in agony he knew he couldn't go on like that. His mother suggested he take some aspirin after his father left to cool down -- only to her dismay (not that she knew it at the time) he took more than he should. Gulping down nearly twelve of the tiny pills, he hoped it would be enough to numb him completely -- forever.
His plan backfired. He passed out, and his mother, frantic with worry and grief, brought him to the hospital. After a while his mother left; pulled away by her husband who said he wanted nothing to do with a weakling who tries to end their life. Miserable and stuck within a hospital bed, his only comfort was a kind and gentle nurse who was only a few years older than him. She told him in kind words about her niece's travels in other regions where Pokemon were trained.
After he'd checked out of the hospital and grudgingly returned home, he left to see the nurse every night. She would tell him more and more stories about her niece's adventures. For a time he dated a male nurse that she worked with (by the time he was thirteen, he had come to grips with the thought that he was gay); the trio were a good group of friends. They learned about Pokemon together and fantasized the beauty being a trainer would be, if they weren't in these miserable circumstances.
It wasn't until his father found out that he was gay that life began to become unbearable again. The female nurse, painstakingly worried for him, began to save up money for Nick to leave to get out of Sotoa. His now ex-boyfriend pitched in (they had broken up not because they didn't like each other, but they wanted to avoid as much wrath from his father as possible.)
When he was nineteen, suddenly, his friends surprised him by presenting him a ticket to get out of Sotoa. They told him to go; it was better for him to go than to continue to be tortured there in their home region. He said his final good-byes to his friends, and struggled with tears as he pulled away from the dock. With the chance to make his own life, now, it was too great of a chance. He took it with an open heart.
After arriving in another region, he began to train there, quickly falling in love with his freedom. He felt safe in his second boyfriend, Mikhail's, arms. He'd only once really struggled with his depression again, and that was after Mikhail disappeared -- he struggled with suicide, taking wing to alcohol to try and ease his pains. Two birthdays have past since then, as well as one other boyfriend. After all of this, he decided to leave when he heard of Cheyenne, deciding it wouldn't hurt to start a new journey, away from painful memories. With his new life now well in-swing, Nick has only on thing left to do: to prove to his father that you don't need money to become a winner.
