Full Name: Laverne Garrett Hawthorne
Gender: Female
Age: 19 Birthday: 24th of September
Appearance: Probably one of the most striking features in Laverne is her height. Standing closely at 6’1 feet, she is freakishly tall and easily towers over most of her peers, girls and boys alike. Her skin is naturally tan, a very light shade of brown with a hint of gold. Her eyes are wide and slightly almond shaped, bearing a mixture of light green and gold that contrasts with the tone of her skin. Her face is lean with high cheekbones, her mouth is small and her lips are thin. Her nose is angular, but small. Most people will not notice this, though, due to the ragged pale scar that mars her face from her right eyebrow, through the bridge of her nose, to her left cheek. There are other, smaller, scars on her arms and legs, but most of them are faded and will probably disappear with time and a bit of sunlight. Laverne doesn’t try to hide her scar, having long ago stopped feeling self-conscious about it. She accepts it as a part of herself as much as she does her arms or legs.
Her hair is a honey brown color. It falls, straight, down to her shoulder blades. It’s not unusual to see many strands of her hair sticking out in odd directions. Seeing as she cuts her own hair, clumsily so, her haircut is a tad bit odd. She usually pulls it up in a messy bun with some shorter strands (about chin length) framing her face. Her body might be described as lanky, as if it had suddenly grown up and still wasn’t used to its new shape. Even so, due to the years of constantly exploring the woods, Laverne’s body is agile and fast, and even though she is thin, you can notice some muscles under the skin of her arms and legs. Due to her habit of exploring the wilderness, Laverne’s fingernails are usually broken and, more often than not, one can spot several stains of dirt on her clothes.
As for clothes, Laverne prefers practical clothing (preferably with lots of pockets): t-shirts and shorts for hot weather, pants and fur-lined coats for cold weather; and, of course, her faithful hiking boots.
Background: Like most children in the world of Pokémon, Laverne grew up hearing stories of fearless and courageous young trainers who would brave the world with only a backpack and their first Pokémon companion. She grew up to learn that Pokémon were mysterious and wonderful creatures that would fight alongside humans to vanquish the evils of the world. She admired those Pokémon trainers and her one wish, ever since she could remember, was to become one of them, one of the legends. She dreamed, day and night (and especially when her parents bid her good night and left her in her bed), of her adventures in the Pokémon world and how she'd become known by all as the hero of the Hoenn region.
Her hometown of Fortree provided her with enough space and landscapes for her exciting make believe adventures. She would lead her childhood friends and colleagues through the thick forest, never too far away from Fortree itself, fighting off evil organizations and conquering badges, sometimes until their parents were forced to call them back. Laverne couldn't wait for her tenth anniversary, the day when she would be able to make all those adventures she had always dreamed of come true.
Of course, like any day in her life, her tenth anniversary finally arrived. Being an only child, her parents were worried for her. However, she wouldn't be the only child of Fortree starting her Pokémon journey that day. When her parents asked her to travel with someone else, she agreed. They gave her a male Growlithe as a starter Pokémon, whom she named Leo, and then took her to the edge of Fortree where two more children and their parents awaited them. There she bid goodbye to her parents and finally started on her journey.
Even though Laverne had a phone with her, her parents only heard of her a week later, when a local Pokémon Ranger contacted them saying that he'd found their daughter severely injured, dehydrated and with no Pokémon on her. She was rushed to a hospital where they also found that she had broken a couple of bones and had taken a pretty strong blow to the head. When she woke up, three days later, she refused to talk about whatever had happened to her, no matter how or who asked her. She also refused to continue her Pokémon journey, going back to Fortree with her parents and resuming her studies. At first she was too scared to even leave her house, but soon enough she overcame the fear and once again started exploring the woods. She was never exactly the same, especially when it came to Pokémon, but she resumed living her life fairly easily. No one in her house talked about Pokémon journeys for a long time. As the years passed by, though, her parents would give her hints that she should try a second Pokémon journey. They were worried about her apathy toward Pokémon, since the creatures played a big role in modern society; maybe as much as humans themselves. She'd ignore them, for she had no interest in going on a second journey.
However, maybe more due to her wandering nature than her interest in Pokémon, one day she finally relented. She told her parents she would try going on another Pokémon journey, but this one would be different. She wouldn't stay in Hoenn, not with those traumatic memories surfacing every time she closed her eyes. Instead, she would travel to a different region and start her Pokémon journey there.
Personality: Laverne is someone who is never quite satisfied with what surrounds her and can’t help but thirst for new places to explore and new people to meet. Her eyes are always wandering about, curious and eager. She’s a wanderer at heart. Laverne’s also known to be reckless, rarely thinking things through before acting. Also, being stubborn, it’s extremely hard to get her to change her ideas once she’s determined to make them come to fruition, no matter how foolish or dangerous they might seem.
Somewhat careless, Laverne finds it hard to survive in the wilderness. Although she’s had years of exploring the woods near her house, being in the wild for a long period of time might be too great a task for someone as disorganized and distracted as Laverne. It’s not that she does it on purpose: things just seem to randomly disappear around her. It takes her a long time to find the things she’s looking for, mostly because the inside of her backpack is always a chaotic mess (hence why she loves clothes with lots of pockets).
Laverne is also someone who tends to keep to herself. She enjoys being on her own, even if she feels lonely on occasion. She does like to meet people, but usually keeps a distance. She’s the kind of girl that’ll keep many acquaintances, but that will only have a handful of real friends. She warms up slowly to people, but once she feels comfortable around someone, she’ll have no fear of showing her true self, even her flaws.
A lover of coffee, Laverne bitterly misses the strong substance when she’s in the wilderness. Every time she has the chance to drink it, she’ll take it. She also loves berries (not as much, though), even the ones meant for Pokémon only. In any case, Laverne loves food in general and she tends to eat a lot of it, but she has a fast metabolism and she does a lot of exercise. Indeed, hiking, running and swimming are three of her favorite activities – and she’s very good at them. It shows in the muscles on her arms and legs. As a free spirit, Laverne loves the feeling of freedom. Her dream is to fly on the back of a big flying Pokémon: and she absolutely must have one of those in her team.
Due to something that happened in her past, Laverne fears Pokémon, although maybe fear is too strong a word. She simply doesn’t trust Pokémon. Unlike many other people, she prefers to trust in humans rather than in Pokémon. The only Pokémon that she somewhat trusts are the ones that she can control.
Laverne will not talk about her scars, especially the one on her face - ever. She suffers from insomnia and nightmares, so it’s not unusual for her to walk at night and doze off while resting for a while during the day. When stressed or thoughtful she touches the scar on her face and winces, as if she could still feel pain. She does her best not to let her demons cripple her.
