As Jackson left town, he still cradled his Cyndaquil protectively in his arms. It was nice, having a Pokémon. A fire type had an added benefit in this time of year that he hadn't even thought of. His partner's natural heat was keeping him warm as he marched through the snow on Route 1.
"You need a name, don't you, little guy?" he asked the Pokémon in his arms. JD chuckled slightly as the Cyndaquil blinked up at him and nodded, apparently agreeing. "Right. How 'bout Lava?" he asked, only to see the small flame bristle. His eyelashes almost scorched, he tried again. "Okay. I'm guessing that was a 'no'. How about Ares? A nice, tough name?" he suggested. His partner made a strange sound, almost like it was purring, and he counted that as a win. "Alright. Ares it is."
After a few more moments of walking, Ares began to squirm in his hold. "You want down?" he asked, already bending over to place the Cyndaquil in the snow. Had his partner even seen this kind of weather? Had it ever seen the outside of its Pokeball? If not, Jackson was going to have to rectify that. He watched as his partner ran around the lightly dusted route.
Ares had never seen this white, fluffy stuff. It was cold, but he was warm so it didn't phase him too much. He sniffed at piles, only to sneeze when some of the moist, cold droplets caused a tickling sensation. He stared as the pile he was sniffing at poofed with the force of his sneeze. He started to chase some of the flakes, only to stop when he heard something. Within seconds, he was back at his new trainer's side, looking out from between the man's legs.
Jackson immediately missed his Cyndaquil's warmth, but he was happy to see that his new partner was enjoying the snow. He was concerned, however, when the Cyndaquil rushed back to his side. He could feel slight tremors coming from his partner, and he wondered if it was due to cold or fear. "What is it, boy?" he asked, turning his back from the direction that Ares was looking and soothingly petting his partner.

They soon spotted the trainer and the Cyndaquil and the Cubchoo quickly looked up at the Beartic who told his son to simply ignore the pokemon. But the Cubchoo was too curious and just couldn't get himself to do so. >But dad. I think I'm ready! Let me train against them! Please! Please! Pretty please!< He asked and the Beartic, although he knew and feared what would happen if he said yes, could not say no to his little cub's bear eyes and he instantly allowed it.
>HEY! ROAR!< He yelled at the Cyndaquil and Jackson. That was probably scary for them, seeing this large bear yelling at them like that. But he was very friendly, even though it didn't seem that way. >You! My child wants to test his strength against you! You okay with that!< He yelled to the top of his lungs.
The Cubchoo could only laugh as he watched his father do all the talking. He probably scared them away...

When he heard the roar, Jackson gathered his Cyndaquil protectively in his arms and slowly stood up. Turning around slowly to avoid any sudden movements, he saw the large Beartic looming nearby. He was too preoccupied with the daddy to notice the little Cubchoo beside it. JD took a few tentative steps backwards, trying to put some sort of distance between himself and the bear-like Pokémon when Ares started squirming again. " It's okay. Calm down," he hushed to his partner, just as the Pokémon managed to free himself and jump from his arms. Once on the ground, the flame on his back bristled again. < Stop scaring my trainer,> Ares said boldly to the larger of the two Pokémon. He would defend Jackson forever, if he could. He'd only known the man a little while, but he knew that his trainer would do the same for him. That was why he had to accept the challenge. < Okay,> he said, slightly shier than he had before. He then turned his attention to the smaller bear, leering at it. " Ares," Jackson begged from behind as his partner moved between him and the bear, not knowing what was happening. He didn't want his brand new partner to be hurt so soon. He'd be a complete failure as a trainer if he let that happen. That was when he saw the smaller cub that Ares was staring at. " He's so cute," he mumbled quietly to no one, still wary of the larger bear. He sneezed out a powder snow attack and sent a chilling blast of air towards the Cyndaquil. The sudden sneeze caused him to trip and fall on the ground. His father sighed and shook his head. <Not a good idea...> No way was his son ready for any sort of fight, especially against a fire type. Oh. Oh. His Cyndaquil was battling the Cubchoo. Jackson saw that, now. He should help, right? Right. " Aw, he's sick," JD said, already rifling through his bag to see if he had something to make the young Pokemon feel better. He had some potions, and oh. Maybe the Oran Berry? Oh. Was that supposed to be an attack? Well, then. They'd show that Cubchoo who was boss. The young man just wished he had been able to see it as an attack so he could have given his partner some sort of direction. " You all right, pal?" he asked Ares was hit with the powder snow, but the flame on the Pokemon's back melted the brunt of it. Ares was starting to get cold and shivery, though. He was also slightly irritated that the trainer he was trying to defend wanted to help the guy that challenged him. He forced the flame on his back a little bigger in response. " Good boy. Let's try extrasensory," JD suggested to his partner. < Got it boss,> he responded as he tried to tap into the psychic power. Jackson blinked as he witnessed the effects of his partner's attack. He'd read about it, but he'd never seen it used firsthand. Seeing how that Cubchoo reacted nearly broke his heart in two and his nurturing nature took over. Luckily, he had just found where he had stored his berries. " Hold up a sec, Ares," he instructed his Cyndaquil before facing his fear and slowly approaching the Cubchoo and its parent. After all, he didn't want Papa Bear to think he was threatening Baby Bear. " Hey there, little guy. Don't cry. You're doin' real well. I thought you might like a berry to cheer you up," he said, offering his lone Oran berry to the smaller of the two Pokemon. Ares, on the other hand, didn't like all of the attention that the little Pokemon was getting. JD was his trainer. He was supposed to be the one getting taken care of, not the other guy. Sure, he hadn't been hurt too badly by the previous attack, and the Cubchoo hadn't even been able to attack this round, but that was so not the point. The point was that Jackson shouldn't be favoring. That was why he followed his trainer to the young Pokemon, leering at it from behind the young man's legs. His face looked vicious, his fangs were bared. "Don't you touch my cub." The child hid behind one of his father's thick arms. With the Beartric's growl, Jackson dropped the berry and - in his haste to get away from the larger Pokémon - tripped over his partner as he backpedaled, causing him to fall to the ground. Snow soaking through his clothes, he was frozen in fear. He held his hands up in a placating manner. " It's okay. I'm not gonna hurt either of you," he said soothingly before slowly crab-walking away to put some distance between them. Ares, however, stayed where he was, frozen in fear and shaking from the growl that Papa Bear had emitted. All he could do was continue to leer, this time at the Beartic. He knew it was stupid, but he wasn't going to let the bigger Pokémon scare Jackson. < He was just trying to be nice to the kid,> he said defensively, though his defiant tone was betrayed by his constant shaking. < And if the cub doesn't want the berry, I'll gladly have it. I love those things,> he bristled in fake confidence. " Ares," JD hissed at his partner once there was an adequate distance between his body and the large Beartric. " Come back here," he said, already reaching for the Cyndaquil's Pokeball which was resting in his pocket. If the larger Pokémon tried to do anything to his partner, he'd just recall it. The Cubchoo was getting annoyed with his father for always getting in his way, and he took a few steps closer to the Cyndaquil with a determined look. His father was going to have to get over it, he wanted to grow up big and strong! <Dad, I'll be like you! Just let me try.> The bear cub croaked out, surprising the Beartic as he was greeted with a leer from the Cyndaquil.
How fiesty, that Cyndaquil needed to learn how to pick his fights better. The ice type knew the little runt was bluffing, but he liked how he was being stood up to. Feeling as if he should trust his son and let him grow up a little, the father relented and let his son attempt to battle.
<Grrr!> The Cubchoo growled, trying to be ferocious as he blew out a weak Powder Snow at the Cyndaquil. Well, the attack itself was weak, and the Cyndaquil would've been resistant to it. At least he knew how to attack.

Jackson watched his Cyndaquil leering at the Beartic, and he wanted to bang his head against the nearest wall. Or tree trunk, since he was outside. He didn't want his partner to get hurt, after all, and picking a fight with something that big was a bad situation. " Ares, please don't do anything stupid," he begged his partner. Yes, he was a rather proud man, and walking away from a fight killed him, but he knew that they couldn't beat the Beartic. " Just come back here," he called to it. Who knew that the shy, timid Cyndaquil he'd picked up from the lab hours ago would be so defiant? It appeared that Ares was just as proud as his trainer, and would not back down. He turned to look at Jackson with a tilt of its head, a curious and defiant expression on its face. When he turned back to face the other two Pokemon, he was hit with the small poof of Powdered Snow that the Cubchoo had sent at him. That was it. The little Cubchoo wasn't going to get away with a cheap shot like that. He lit up the flame on his back a notch to warm himself before barreling at the Cubchoo head on, just as Jackson was yelling at him to stop. The human didn't seem to want his Pokemon to fight either, which made the Beartic chuckle a little. They were the same, weren't they? The Beartic was just as nervous about letting his son fight, even though he originally wanted his son to battle in the first place. They picked an opponent that was much too strong for him, and he didn't want to ruin his son's confidence in life. Yet would a loss really be so emotionally damaging?
It depended on how his son learned from the experience, he supposed. He winced at the sight of his kid being Tackled, as no parent liked seeing their child in pain. His lips curled up into an annoyed snarl, flashing those teeth as his son yelped from the collision. The Cubchoo was new to this battling thing, feeling really overwhelmed as he stared at the Cyndaqul with wide eyes.
<He's good...> Too good. He sniffled back up his snotty booger as he heaved in another deep breath. Just as his daddy taught him, he fired off another Powder Snow at the fire type. It wouldn't be very effective, but it was the only attack he knew.

Jackson flinched as the Cunchoo got hit with a tackle from Ares. He was proud of his Pokemon, but he didn't want the weaker of the two to get hurt. Why wasn't the Beartic intervening? Unless Papa Bear thought it was best that his son got caught. He'd happily take the Pokemon and train him up big and strong, but that was a pipe dream. No parent would let him get away with capturing their baby, and he didn't want to get mauled by an angry father. " Look, Ares, I think you proved your point. Your stronger. You don't want to hurt the little guy, do you?" he asked his partner. JD knew he didn't want that. He didn't want his Cyndaquil - or any other Pokemon that he'd acquire - becoming a bully. Besides, the larger bear Pokemon was bound to get involved if his son kept getting the snot beat out of him. But did Ares listen? No. He didn't even look back at his trainer because if the little Cubchoo insisted on trying to making him freeze, he'd keep on attacking. Through the Powder Snow attack (which was almost had him frozen to the spot), he leered at the Cubchoo again. < Quit attacking me,> Ares shouted to the little guy. He didn't want to become a bully, either, but the kid kept coming at him. < 'Cause now I've got to fight back,> he continued as he ran at the Cubchoo again, going for another solid tackle. The Beartic could only listen to the trainer and Pokemon's logic as he watched his son get into the red health. The leer and tackle was enough to nearly knock out his son, who was currently sobbing in the field because he had a bit too many boo-boos for him to handle. <ENOUGH!> The father roared, not allowing the battle to go any further as he scooped his son protectively in his arms. With a glare towards the Cyndaquil, which shouldn't have been taken personally, he ran off into the shrubbery.
They probably wouldn't be seen again for a long time; at least until Route 4. In the meantime, there was a Weedle that was humming loudly to herself as she practiced one of the newest moves her belly dancing teacher taught her. She had to shake her hips AROUND TOWN, giggling as she liked the feel of her body moving in that way. It was like she was a free spirit, moving with the flow and letting her body take control of her mind.
<I'll get the hang of this!> She giggled, knowing that as a worm, she looked hardly attractive enough to really pull it off. Still, the Weedle was cute in her own awkward way as she inched through the snowy path. It was up to the trainer if he wanted to interact or not~!

Jackson rolled his eyes as Ares hit the poor Cubchoo again, this time hard enough for the Beartic to call their battle to a stop. They were really going to have to work on the whole 'listening' thing. He'd been worried about his partner getting hurt by the larger of the two, and something serious could have happened if the dad had decided to get involved. JD was also a little sorry to see the Cubchoo go. It had been a cute little guy, and he would've loved to catch it, train it, and help it grow up big and strong. Papa Bear probably had that covered, but still. Once the pair were a safe distance away, Jackson went over to his Cyndaquil, who happened to stop near where he had dropped his berry earlier. He picked both up, pocketing the berry and cradling his partner close to his chest. " Cold?" he asked him, wanting to make sure he still wanted to be outside of its Pokeball. The Cyndaquil had stopped shivering, so JD took it as a good sign. " You did well. I'm proud of you. But you really could have hurt that poor Cubchoo," he praised right before he noticed the Weedle wiggling towards them. Jackson let out a not so manly shriek that had his Cyndaquil looking at him curiously. What? He didn't like bugs. Or bug-type Pokemon, for that matter. They freaked him out with their buggy eyes and sticky webs. Yuck. " You up for another round, Ares?" he asked his Cyndaquil, gently depositing it on the ground as the flame on his back rose. Ares didn't understand what was so bad about the harmless bug, but he'd follow his trainers instructions. " Extrasensory. ," he called out. Okay. So maybe Jackson over-reacted a teensy-tiny bit. No one was around to call him out for screaming like a teenage girl. Besides, the weird, little bug was sort of cute in a creep-crawly way. He'd never want her on his team (because he hadn't gotten over his fear of bugs), but he did feel sort of bad for having Ares attacking it out of the blue. JD was about to call off the impromptu battle, but the Weedle had already started to fight back. He watched as Ares began to trip over his own feet and stumble around the frozen, snow covered grass. After this battle, he vowed to give his Cyndaquil a break from fighting and maybe break in the Skitty that he had acquired while leaving the city thanks to the January promo. He just wanted to see his new partner win one more time. The young man quickly thought of a strategy. " Get it surrounded by a smokescreen. Then surprise it with a tackle." It was times like these - where he actually got to use some of what he learned - that he was thankful he stayed in school so long. Ares nodded, puffing out smoke in the direction of the Weedle. He then ran to the side as quickly as he could (he was still tripping over some of the string), to try to tackle it from the left. Coughing as she was a little bewildered at the puff of smoke that got in her eyes, the Weedle started to rub at them furiously. She could hear the footsteps of the mouse creeping up on her, ready to do something painful as she tried to rub it out faster. Her eyes were red, burning up at the sensation of the Smokescreen. When she opened up her eyes with a pained red coloration, the Cyndaquil was right in front of her face.
<Aye aye aye!> She exclaimed right as she was hit by the tackle, flopping on her back and rolling over her head, landing right on her belly comically as she huffed in pain from the blow. Ow! That didn't hurt as much as the psychic move, but it wasn't helping her one bit. She only had one damaging attack, but she planned on getting this sucker for sure.
<I can play rough with the guys too.> She grinned at him, trying to prove herself to the Cyndaquil when she gave him that confident look. It was then that she barged at him horn first, ready to stab him in the noggin with her Poison Sting attack.

" YEAH! Great Job, Ares!" Jackson shouted as he watched the action unfold. It had worked perfectly, exactly how he had imagined. The Weedle hadn't seen anything coming. His Cyndaquil started preening at that, appreciating the praise. Neither trainer nor Pokemon seemed to have noticed when the Weedle went into attack mode. " Watch out," he called to his partner, but Ares was already in motion. He stumbled over some of the little string that was still wrapped around his legs, getting grazed by the poison stinger. " You okay, buddy?" he asked. Ares let out a small whimper when the small stinger hit him, but it didn't penetrate through his skin. He was fine. At least he would be once the Weedle left. He nodded at his trainer, waiting for instructions. Once he made sure that his Cyndaquil was alright, JD was already beginning to think of a new strategy. " We're going to try something close to the last round. Smokescreen and follow it up with Extrasensory. It's not going to know what hit her," he called out. He wanted the Weedle gone ASAP, and this plan just might do it. In his mind, the smokescreen would make the bug prepare for another tackle to follow it. Instead, they were going to play with her senses, and when she was totally off kilter, they were going to finish it off. Spd -1 Att -1 Level 6 | Male Attacks: tackle - leer - extrasensory - smokescreen Hit by Poison StingCyndaquil is using smokescreen, then extrasensory. Jackson is thinking.

This one hurt just as much as the other, but felt so much more painful as she was already losing a lot of health.
>Oh no! Aye Aye! This is not fun! Not fun!< She said as she used her only attack to her advantage. The beauty of poison sting was that it shot out multiple arrows at a time, so she could use it to her advantage even though her accuracy was off. She quickly spun in a circle and sent a dozen poisonous arrows all over the place, hoping that at least one would hit the Cyndaquil and might be able to poison him.
>You want to tussle? I tussle with the boys, and I usually do alright!< She said, still confident that she could hang with the Cyndaquil even though she was getting a beating she was not used to.
