Cai had reached the fork in the road and pondered his choices. Having been on an adventure before he knew labs tended to have a narrow selection of Pokemon to start with. For that reason, and that reason alone he had decided to take a chance with whatever this Ranger Station was one. He had to be a fool to not know what Rangers were, but he'd always been under the impression that the stations were just like an HQ for local rangers.
Thoughts rebounded inside his head about what exactly this could be and he hoped he hadn't wasted his time coming down her just to soothe curiosity. He sighed a little and glanced at his watch. He wasn't surprised to see that very little time had actually passed. "So impatient," he chastised himself. He adjusted his backpack on his shoulder and hurried his walk. To occupy his time as much as possible Cai kept his eyes on the sky, lazily drawing pictures in the fluffy, slow moving clouds. Vaguely he wondered what it would be like to be a cloud, but classified the thought as abstract and tucked it back into his head for later analysis.
It wasn't too much longer before the station came into view. Is that a... Carnival tent? Cai had been to a carnival once in his life and hadn't really been impressed by it. He tried to keep his mind clear of judgement, but he was beginning to think about wasted time again. He approached the tent and peered around at the surrounding, not quite sure if he should enter. "Uh, hello?" he called, leaning slightly to look into the tent. "Anyone home?"

Ranger Parallel and Lana!
Parallel stepped out of the tent, brushing his shoulder free of dust and muttering to himself. He looked up, surprised to find himself face to face with another young man. The term "looked up" was used loosely here as the shaggy haired guy in front of him was quite short. But Parallel grinned all the same and nodded towards him, "Yes! Indeed! Here for your first pokemon? I'm Parallel and..." he glanced around hopefully, "Lana should be around here somewhere..." He frowned, wondering where his joltik had gotten. That was the trouble with having a tiny pokemon as a partner, she was always going bloody missing! Oh well..
Turning his attention back to the young man he said, "Oh! You'll be needing this!" He handed over pack full of fresh supplies for a new trainer. "Pokedex, pokeballs, heal items, all that jazz!" He grinned. "Excited?", he asked before leading the youth over to the edge of the tent to look out on the expanse of the park. This was where he would be getting his first pokemon hopefully. If Lana returned any time now they could actually begin!

Cai was startled the come face to face with one of the rangers. Well, not exactly face to face. Cai took note of his short state and silently grumble about. His stupid eyes were bad enough, but why did he have to be girl sized too? Cai took a step back, putting distance between Parallel and himself, simply because he did better in one one situations when there was plenty of room between them. With the distance firmly established Cai took the time to overlook Parallel and commit him to memory.
Once had had preformed all his usual habits Cai had enough time to clear his throat and reply, "Yes, I suppose I am. I wasn't actually aware you could get Pokemon here, I was just curious..." His gaze dropped to stare at his feet for a half second before looking back up. At the introduction of what he assumed was a Pokemon Cai scanned the area again and was almost disappointed to not find one. No matter, this was a simple set to help him get over his anxiety.
With his attention fully back on the ranger now Cai accepted the pack and took a quick little peek inside. It was all stuff he was thankfully familiar with. "Yeah," he replied, his voice pitched low. Everything about him, from his tensed stance to his voice, was a clear signal at how uncomfortable he was and he hoped Parallel didn't take it personally. He cast another quick glance, looking for anything or anyone that would join the two and makes this a little less awkward. Not finding much the young man decided to distract himself with shoving the new items into his tattered bag. I may actually have to get a new one for this...
Cai convinced himself to stretch a little out of his shell, and asked the question he'd been wondering since the ranger had mentioned getting a Pokemon. "So, uh, how does this ranger station thing work? I've only ever worked with labs..." He hoped his didn't sound too stupid, but shrugged it off. Who cares if he was, the only way he was going to learn was to ask questions.

Ranger Parallel and Lana!
Parallel could tell that the newcomer was feeling a little out of place. That wasn't unusual for new trainers so Par took it in his stride. He smiled warmly at the young man and was about to answer his question when a shock shot up his spine making him yelp. "Ow! Lana!" A joltik suddenly appeared on his shoulder, having quickly scrambled up there. She beamed at the strange young man. <Ooooo... StrangeEyes is quite handsome isn't he?" she commented to her trainer. Parallel gave her a look and then rolled his eyes. "This is Lana, my joltik, please excuse her, eh, forwardness..."
Lana leapt lightly from Parallel's shoulder onto Cai's. She was quite a blunt, intrusive little creature with no understanding of personal space, but that didn't mean she was insensitive. She sat on his shoulder and looked him up and down, her spidey senses tingly. She knew instantly he was morph. But it was clear he didn't want anyone to know, so she winked at him and kept her mouth shut.
Parallel frowned at his little bug type and shook his head. "If she's bothering you I can call her back" he offered helpfully, just in case. But anyway, back to business! "Yes, the Ranger Station is quite different from the Lab. Here we have a much broader range of pokemon to become you partner, the only thing is, you don't get to choose. Whatever pokemon appears, or whichever Lana decides to find for you will be your starter. It can be any pokemon at all!" he said, gesturing out onto the park.
<Except pseudo legendaries and such> whispered Lana, <Like dratini and what not!>
Parallel nodded in agreement. "It's a risk you see, you might find something as rare as a charmander or as common as a pidgey! Wold you like to try it?" he asked, grinning. Lana squeaked with excitement and let out a little spark of electricity. <You can either wlk over into that grassy area and see what turns up, or I can go and take a wander and see who'd like a trainer out there!> she said, bubbling with happiness.

Cai was a little shocked by the sudden appearance of the Joltik, but almost instantly felt more at ease than he was with just the ranger. Until she mentioned his eyes, that is. A tinge of color flooded his cheeks before quickly disappearing. "It's not trouble," he muttered to the ground. He wasn't going to lie and say he didn't enjoy the compliment, it was just the call name he'd been assigned by Lana. Anything but that... His thoughts were distracted by a sudden pressure on his shoulder.
He looked over at Lana and studied her as she studied him. Electric types were neutral ground to him, but he at admit this one was particularly cute. "Hullo there, I believe I heard your name was Lana," he said to her, seeming to know what she meant by the wink and appreciating it. His attention quickly flashed back to Parallel. "Really, I don't mind her. I prefer bluntness to beating around the bush," he assured the man. Personal details flowed from him much more quickly now that there was another being with them.
He considered what the ranger and Joltik were saying and was actually amazed. That seemed like a huge risk, but in a way a much better method. At least, he preferred it. It was decently fair method too, restricting pseudo-legendaries. Also most likely to make your starter more individualized. What were the chances someone else had the same starter as you? Not really that high considering how many there were, very unlike the lab.
"I've never really considered myself much of a risk taker, but this one seems worth it," he commented. His gaze landed on the indicated area and watched it carefully. His head tilted from one side to another, and a quizzical look crossed his feature. All the possibilities were astounding, rooting him in place with all the thought.
The male gently shook himself -mindful of Lana- after a few seconds and straightened his posture. He didn't want to appear as though he were hesitating and took a cautious step toward the area. Another few steps took him farther in and all his sense were on high alert, watching for any sign of a Pokemon. He wasn't too particular, and was perfectly aware that anything could be trained to be strong. There were just a few select species that were harder to work with.
A sudden question crossed his mind and he paused to look back at the ranger. "What exactly am I supposed to do when a Pokemon appears?" he asked. He didn't have a Pokemon to battle with and wasn't sure how socialized these ones were. He wasn't exactly worried about himself, but knowing how to react would set his mind at ease.

Ranger Parallel and Lana!
Lana beamed up at the new trainer-to-be and nodded, "Indeed it is StrangeEyes, I do hope you get a pokemon you would like to train from here.>
Parallel held a knowing smile on his face as he watched his joltik interact with the young man. She was always good at keeping new trainers busy, whether by making them feel more comfortable or accidentally frightening them she was quite handy to have around! The young man seemed to be very comfortable around her too, which was always a good sign. He wasn't afraid of her at all, in fact, he was more talkative and relaxed now that she was here! It looked like he would make a good trainer, if all his pokemon interactions were as good as this. Parallel grinned, he loved this job.
Lana nodded vigorously, <Definitely worth it!>
Par allowed the boy some time to decide what he would like to do. It was a big decision after all, taking such a risk, but hopefully it would pay off for him. He looked up to see him walking towards the grassy area and quickly followed, reaching into his pocket for a spare pokeball. "You read my mind!", Parallel declared as he handed Cai the ball. "Pokemon here are much tamer than they would be in the wild so there's no need to battle them. Once you see one you just throw the pokeball at it and there you are! Captured!"
Lana suddenly squeaked and pointed to the edge of the forest where a pokemon appeared to be coming closer. Parallel nodded and looked to the new trainer, "Ready? Of you go!" Lana held on tight to the boy's shoulder, reluctant to leave until he had a partner of his own. <Good luck StrangeEyes", she whispered.
A young torchic trotted out of the forest, looking around to see what all the commotion was about. It cocked it's head to one side when it saw the two men and a joltik standing pretty close by. Shrugging it's little feathers it pecked at some dirt, searching for worms, before scratching at the ground curiously.

Cai nodded he agreement. So do I... he thought. He honestly wasn't that worried about it, though. He was confident that he could make anything work if he tried hard enough. Still, it would be nice to start with something he preferred. He put it out of him, promising to be thankful for whatever he got.
Cai gratefully accepted the Pokeball and squeezed it tightly in his hand. It was calming to hear the Pokemon were tamer. It made him wonder if they were at least slightly socialized with humans. It would make things easier, but he rather liked the challenge of acquainting Pokemon with humans. Or, in his case, mostly human humanoids. He was also comforted by Lana. Some may consider it a weakness, but he was happy to be put at east by Pokemon, even if he didn't know them.
When the Joltik had directed his attention to the edge of the forest Cai's sense went into overload and his whole body tensed up. Patiently he waited for the Pokemon to appear and relaxed when the Torchic popped out. Of all the luck! He took a couple cautious steps closer, trying not to startle it. Most trainers may have been able to catch a Pokemon from his previous positions, but he had terrible aim. Once he felt he was close enough he tossed the ball.
He grinned when the Pokeball struck the little bird and sucked it into the depth of the Pokeball. What's the interior of a Pokeball like? he wondered. He shook his head, wondering where such a random and abstract idea had come from. He agreed to save it for later. He took the last few strides to collect the ball and strode right back to Parallel to be sure Lana returned to him safely.
"Thank you, Parallel, Lana," he said, his voice a clear indication of truly how thankful he was. He wasn't certain what he would have found at the lab, but he had a feeling this was going to turn out a lot better. It had been a long time since he'd felt the joy of a first Pokemon, but time hadn't dulled the emotions. He waited long enough to make sure his thanks seemed genuine and to allow Lana to return then made his farewells and departed for the first route.
Talk||Thanks again!
