Elliot looked up at the door and took in a deep breath, letting the moment sweep over him before he took the plunge. Like a neatly wrapped present, he was certain the contents would be less pleasing than the promise - most things seemed to work that way, in his experience - but nevertheless he couldn’t quite keep excitement from steadily overtaking him. His mind reeled with the possibilities of what Pokémon he might leave with and the suspense was almost too delicious to break.
He moved to a window, thankfully lacking of occupants on the other side, and gave himself a once over. His hair seemed fine, his face was solidly “adequate” as always, and his fedora was ready after a second’s adjustments. Now if only no one called him ma’am, the day would be near perfect. He took another breath and assured himself that his sudden burst of skittishness didn’t show on his face before taking another breath and walking into the building.

The Professor was inside, reading his book of the newer pokemon species which he does very often whenever the newer copies comes out. He learned that there were newer species discovered recently and also newer moves. When Elliot walked in, the professor was still distracted from his readings that he did not have time to really prep for the visitor. He looked up to see the boy but did not make any gesture at all as he continued his reading. It seemed that Elliot made no impact on Winters yet. And Winter stayed in his seat, not even bothering to go up and greet the boy or even help him out in the process. He was too busy, or too cool to do that at the very moment.

Elliot looked at the professor and glanced around the room, taking stock of his surroundings. No one about besides himself and a single man, who appeared undisturbed by his presence. "Excuse me," he said politely, unconsciously standing a bit straighter. "I was here about getting a starter Pokemon... ?" The question mark seemed to hang in the air, a slight lilt that seemed to wonder if the boy should come back later.

Winters held up a finger as the boy began to speak. He finished reading the line he was on about the potential of baby poke'mon as pets for young children. When he finished he set down the paper, open to the page he had just been reading. He turned on his chair to face the new guy who just walked in. "A starter poke'mon. How surprising and original." Winters said playfully. He leaned back in his chair and grabbed at the clipboard with the list of potential starters on it. He leaned back upright and stood up, handing the list to Elliot. "Have your pick."

The edges of Elliot's mouth twitched upward at the quip, relaxing slightly. "Sorry to disappoint," he said, a bit playful in voice himself. The man had probably known what he was there for the moment he came through the door. "I'll try not to be too boring." He took a few steps forward to take the list, his heart suddenly in his throat again, and looked over his magnificent, magnificent choices.
On the paper were the Pokemon's mere first forms and their moves, but all that Elliot could see was Magmortor, Milotic, Torterra... Each of them was so gorgeous in their strength, but he couldn't pick based on the images in his mind's eye alone. He didn't want a Pokemon that would take long to evolve, he knew, so almost immediately Magby, Magnemite, and Larvitar were each discarded. Litwick's level of evolution he wasn't sure about. Sandshrew and Pidove were decidedly unimpressive compared to his other choice's, so off they went. Smoochum and Stunky, he simply had to admit he disliked. Zangoose was a good choice, but unfortunately paled when placed directly next to a very ideal Heracross.
He was left with four tentative choices. "Could I see Turtwig, Heracross, and Litwick?" he asked, finally dropping the list to his side. "And, ah, maybe Feebas," he added, knowing that a tank or pond would be required to view that Pokemon and not wanting to be too much trouble.

"Again, all very creative choices." He had the most common choices on hand, he stepped back and sat down in his chair, pushing off of the desk. He slid over to another desk with huge drawers. He opened one and pulled out two poke'balls, a third out of another, and from the fourth drawer he pulled out a poke'ball and a smallish bowl of water. Hardly large enough for something to live in, but the Feebas wouldn't be in there long. He tapped them each in turn and different poke'mon popped out.
Feebas splashed into the bowl and turned a tight circle before looking out at the new trainer. Litwick, a shy little creature, quickly floated over to the desk and set himself down beside a can of pencils. His eyes faded away and he appeared to be a regular candle. Finally Turtwig and Heracross stood beside each other and looked at each other, shrugging.

Elliot had a few moments to ponder if the Pokemon he'd requested all happened to be very popular before the man had retrieved their Poke Balls and they were all respectively standing, floating, or swimming in front of him. The Ghost type's fading act struck Elliot as a little eerie, but it also intrigued him. Seeing the Feebas in such a small bowl on his account gave him a small pang of guilt though, so he made a point of looking at that Pokemon first. "Hello there," he said, trying for a friendly smile and tentatively putting his hand out to touch the fish.

::feebas:: Feebas pulled another tight turn around in his bowl as Elliot came close to his bowl to interact with him. Then his head popped out of the top of the bowl, both large eyes focusing intently on Elliot. The strange potato looking fishing seemed to have little trouble breathing air, but was much more comfortable in the water; as small as the bowl was. "Salutation." The fish greeted in his own poke'mon language. Maybe this trainer was one of those who could understand him? Some did. Some didn't. The fish was curious which this trainer would turn out to be.
The bug and grass poke'mon seemed to be losing interest as the trainer focused on the Feebas. Turtwig wandered under a table and laid down beside the leg of the table, yawning as he did so. Heracross walked over to Winters, who was leaning on the edge of a nearby table, and lightly tugged on his coat. He handed the Heracross a treat and she smiled, popping the sweet candy in her mouth.

Unfortunately, Elliot didn't quite understand the language of Pokemon, but he could understand that the Pokemon was greeting him easily enough. He didn't get the impression that it was all that grumpy about being in the bowl for the moment either. "My name is Elliot," he said, trying not to feel awkward about not being able to understand the other half of the conversation.

::feebas:: Feebas lifted himself a bit higher up out of the bowl, putting his fins on the rim of the bowl and completely lifting his eyes and mouth out of the water, happily engaging in conversation with Elliot. "Feebas." Convient that his name was the only word he could say that Elliot would understand. He held out one of his fins as a sort of "hand-shake". It was as close to the gesture as the fish poke'mon would get. He blinked, having no problems with the silence that was falling between him and this trainer-to-be. He didn't have much else to say to Elliot.

Elliot had to smile at the fish gurgling its own name. It was an ugly creature, to be sure, but it had its own sort of charm. He gently put his fingers around its fin and shook it up and down. "A pleasure." He glanced to the side, not seeing the Turtwig and with the Litwick still sitting disguised on the table. "Excuse me," he said to his potential partner, not sure what the proper etiquette for this sort of meeting was and not wanting to offend as he turned his attention to the Heracross. "Hey there," he said, stepping over and kneeling down to be more on the beetle's level.

Also, I have a starter pack for you,” the young professor said with a warm smile before he turned around and pulled out a small kit that contained the bare essentials for a new trainer. “ Here you go!” he said lightly as he held out the kit. “ And if you would like to choose feebas as your partner, here’s its pokeball and it’s all yours!” he grinned. He always did like seeing the excitement in a trainer’s eyes when they get their very first pokemon, it really was the best thing someone could ask for. And then he saw that the young boy had changed whom he was giving attention to. Now he was down at eye level with the heracross who blinked rather quickly as the trainer talked to him. > Hi...< he said meekly before lightly holding out his hand to perhaps shake the boy's. He nodded absently at the man - whom he felt was being just a bit pushy at the moment with his sudden insistence - and took the kit. It was likely he wanted him out so he could finish his reading. Nonetheless, Elliot took the time to put out his hand and shake the Heracross' claw. The Bug type appeared friendly as well, though perhaps more on the timid side than the Feebas. After a moment he stood, a thoughtful look on his face and the other two starters forgotten to him.
The Heracross would undoubtedly be easier to train than the Feebas, but the thought of a Milotic on his team was ever tempting. It would be trivial, he was sure, to go to some manner of river or pond and catch a Water type capable of walking over land with the fish, and then he just had to hold off on training his primary Pokemon until he could afford to evolve it.
He bit his lip for a moment before deciding. "I'll take the Feebas," he said finally, glancing back at the little fish and accepting its Poke Ball. The Feebas splashed a bit in its bowl in response. "I'll let you back out when I find some water," he promised, eyes softening as he recalled it into the orb.
There was little to do after that. He bid both the man and the remaining Pokemon farewell, packed his things into his bag, and set off onto route one to find a place to become better acquainted with his Pokemon.
