"Entry 2: Well, I'm on the road. From what I gathered back at the Ranger Station, there's a city where I can go and get established. I can start catching new Pokemon, meet some new people, get ready for Gym challenges and Contests, and just sort of generally figure out what's going on. I have to say, I'm kinda excited to catch some new Pokemon. I absolutely adore Sewaddle. He's so tiny, but he's so fun to play with! He has this thing where, whenever there's a bright light, he runs up to it and starts chomping at it. Most of the lights are way above his head, so he's helpless to get at them. Makes me feel bad for the little guy. If this is what owning your own Pokemon is like, I wanna build a huge team! That would be really cool, I think. Here's hoping."
Emil closed the journal, looking up. The snow had just lightly begun to fall, dusting the ground white. Emil shivered, rubbing his arms. He wasn't used to cold weather like this; he enjoyed warm weather all year 'round in his hometown. How any Pokemon that weren't Ice-Types even survived up here was beyond him. He trudged forwards.
For the first time since entering Cheyenne, he really had a great view of the countryside. Vast, rugged mountain ranges swept along the horizon, and rolling hills surrounded the little path he was traveling. The sky, a light gray in the noon sun, sprinkled snow on him. It smelled like snow, too; a sharp, cold smell that at once reminds you of mountains and ice, but also of fires and family. Emil glanced down at his belt, where Sewaddle's Great Ball (turns out it wasn't a regular Poke Ball) rested.
That was his family now.

Pokemon Encounter!
A young teddiursa wandered down route one munching on some berries he'd found nearby. He was looking for something interesting to do, having exhausted tree climbing at this stage. Maybe he could find another pokemon to play with? He hadn't seen many of his own kind around, but that didn't bother him. Any new friend would be welcome as it wans't fun being on his own.
As he ambled along he looked up at the sky. At least it wasn't snowing! But his lack of attention on the path made him trip of a tree root. He tumbled forwards crying out in surprise. <Well that wasn't fun at all!> He frowned, looking down at all his mushed berries. Now he had nothing to snack on either!
Shaking his head, he picked himself up again and trundled on.

Emil was considering bringing out Sewaddle, just so he would have somebody to keep him company on the journey, when he heard a small cry. His eyes darted ahead and to his right, where there was a large tree. One of the tree's roots was stuck blatantly into the center of the path, and, flat on its face in front of the root, was a small Teddiursa. Its cream-colored front was splattered with a dark red color, and for one feverish moment Emil thought the Pokemon was hurt. Then he saw the pile of smashed berries in front of the Teddiursa, and relaxed. It had obviously been snacking and not watching where it was going. Now it had no snack AND it was messy. Poor thing.
Butterflies swooped through Emil's rib cage and stomach. What did he do now? Professor Syl had just thrown the ball at the Pokemon, so that must be all there was to it! He unclipped one of the bright red and white balls from his belt, cocking his arm back in preparation when he remembered something that one of the rangers had told him. Most Pokemon'll put up a fight if you try and capture them right off. To catch a Pokemon, you gotta weaken it first! Emil lowered his arm, feeling foolish. Imagine if he'd wasted a Poke Ball trying to catch the Teddiursa; he'd likely have lost both.
A bead of sweat rolled down his face as he replaced the empty ball and grasped Sewaddle's. This would be their first battle together, as a team. Gripping the Great Ball tightly, he mimicked, as best he could, what he had seen the Trainers on TV do. He threw the ball at the ground in front of the Teddiursa.
Sure enough, the ball popped open and there was Sewaddle, ready to go...sort of.
Sewaddle appeared out of the flash of light, looked at the Teddiursa, looked at Emil, looked back at the Teddiursa, then scuttled over and started gnawing on Emil's shoes. Emil blanched.
"Uh, look, buddy, you gotta go knock out that Teddiursa, okay?" he stammered.
Sewaddle sat there, munching contentedly. The Teddiursa stared, absently licking smashed berries off its paws. Emil reached down, yanked Sewaddle off, and held him up to eye level.
"Sewaddle, if we're gonna be a team, we gotta work together, alright? That means I'll play with you whenever you want, but you have to train and battle when it's time, okay?"
Sewaddle cocked his head, then attempted to munch on Emil's face. Lovingly.
Emil sighed and put the Pokemon back down, where it resumed its attack on his shoes. Gritting his teeth patiently, Emil decided that he should at least try to give a command.
"Alright, Sewaddle, use String Shot to hold it down and then Tackle it!"
Sewaddle bolted upright at these words, looking towards the Teddiursa questioningly, then back at Emil.
"Go!" Emil encouraged.
Sewaddle chirped affirmatively, then rushed at the small bear Pokemon, spitting a gluey strand at it in order to hold it in place. Using all of its legs, Sewaddle launched itself at the Teddiursa with all the force it could muster.

TEDDIURSA APPEARED ! Teddiursa didn't even notice the sounds of the trainer walking behind him as he got up and walked with smears of his lunch all over his face and chest fur. The sound of the pokeball opening up and unleashing Sewaddle, though, got his attention, and he turned around with a curious look on his face. But after a moment, figuring that the bickering human was just a distraction, he turned and started off again. No use in dabbling in things that weren't his business.
Then suddenly, it became his business. He felt a sticky silk envelope his body, making him considerably slower as he fought to move his limbs through the solution. Horrified, he had only a half second to look up when the insect Tackled him, forcing him backwards. <That-that hurt!> He stuttered, tears beginning to well up on his face. But it was really just an act; he wanted to scare the Sewaddle by faking tears.
Any other bear would've lamented though. First, he lost his berries, and now he was being tackled by some random trainer's insect. Talk about bad fortune.

Sewaddle bounced off of the Teddiursa, wishing he had arms to rub his head. That bear had a hard skull! Sewaddle was happy to notice that the Teddiursa was nicely wrapped up in its web; maybe it wouldn't struggle so hard now! <Sorry about your berries!> Sewaddle took what passed for its fighting stance: bunched up and ready to spring while it tried to look tough. Then the Teddiursa started crying. <W-wait, I didn't mean it! Don't cry!> Sewaddle started bawling his little buggy eyes out, devastated that he had hurt the other Pokemon's feelings.
Emil clenched his fist as Sewaddle executed the combo perfectly.
"Way to go, Sewaddle!" he shouted.
He was about to issue another command when the Teddiursa started bawling. Sewaddle saw and started crying himself; Emil was completely bemused. What was he supposed to do now? Then he saw the glint in the Teddiursa's eye, and realized what was going on.
"Don't fall for it Sewaddle! Just shut your eyes and Tackle it!"
Hopefully Sewaddle could pull through; it would be a shame to lose his very first battle. Emil sweated nervously, hoping that his Pokemon would listen.
Sewaddle heard Emil's call. He took another look at the Teddiursa, which was hard through all the tears; sure enough, the bear was only faking it! Sewaddle growled and wrenched his eyes shut, then hurled himself headlong into the Teddiursa with all of his might. He had to trust his trainer on this one!

::teddiursa:: pokemon encounter ! the teddiursa felt that they weren't really working. the tears on the sewaddle anyway. because just then, the bug charged him. of course, this bear didn't actually acknowledge this until the impact hit his stomach, causing him to flop onto his back and flail his legs. he got to his feet, patted away dirt, and looked at the sewaddle. < ow. what was that for? > he asked, an unusually calm expression on his face. though, that expression was to change after the bear got into a stance and leered at the bug, his eyes glinting red. with that in mind, the teddiursa felt himself charging the sewaddle.
only his claws were out and his arms were twisting. he wasn't tackling. no! he was trying to scratch at the tiny body of the bug. that was his plan. he was the one who started the fight, anyway! that was fair, right? he wasn't being mean? no, of course not! this was all part of life, the teddiursa had learned this from a wise old bird who spoke eerie words into his mind. battling was okay. it was fun! and knocking other pokemon out was even better! with a delighted look on the bears face, he waited for the next attack.

"Yeah! Keep it up!" Emil roared.
He was surprised. He didn't normally get so worked up about things; this battle was bringing out a part of him that he didn't recognize. He really wanted Sewaddle to win, he really wanted to catch that Teddiursa and add it to his team, he really wanted to be able to say he was a real Trainer! This was his new beginning, and he wasn't going to waste it!
Sewaddle's head hurt. The Teddiursa's stomach wasn't as hard as its skull, but Sewaddle was starting to see double. He wished he could use a different attack or something. Still, Emil probably knew what he was doing. Hopefully. Sewaddle turned to focus his attention on his opponent once more, only to see the Teddiursa glaring at him evilly, its eyes glinting red. Sewaddle nearly jumped out of his exoskeleton with fright. There was no sign of the sleepily happy Teddiursa that he had just been battling. The bear Pokemon ran at Sewaddle, who was of course far too frightened to even think of dodging. Sharp claws lashed out at his small body, and then flung him across the ground. Sewaddle cried out in pain as it lay there, quivering.
"Are you all right?!" Emil called out frantically.
Sewaddle, forcing itself up, gave what passed for a brave smile as it faced the Teddiursa, and Emil knew it could keep going.
"Let's try something new, Sewaddle! Use Silver Wind!" he commanded, recalling the list of moves that one of the rangers had told him about.
Sewaddle mustered its strength, then, with a flap of its leafy overcoat, sent a huge gust of shimmering wind towards the Teddiursa. Sewaddle knew that this was its best move, and the Teddiursa wouldn't get out of this one!

pokemon encounter ! teddiursa hadn't expected the sudden wind thrown into his face. the bear actually rolled backwards, unable to hold up against the silver wind. < oh... > he mumbled, before getting to his feet and clapping his hands. though he twitched his ears and shot forward again, claws blazin through the air. < hold still? > he asked, a cute smile on his face. he wasn't fazed by being attacked. he thought this was all a game. of course, who would tell him otherwise?
he was having fun. and he was getting tired. that's good on the trainer and sewaddle's part. sort of, depending on how well the teddiursa could fight.

Sewaddle was focused now. Really focused. He had spent most of its life being snugly confined in the Ranger Park, being taken care of by the Swadloons and Leavanny that shared the space with him. Now, for the first time, Sewaddle was taking his own steps into a larger world, together with Emil. As he watched the Teddiursa fly towards him, strings of Sewaddle's own String Shot slowing its movements, Sewaddle bunched up his tiny legs and flung himself to the right, narrowly dodging the swipe. He came up ready for action, fire in his eyes. Sewaddle would later recognize the irony in a bug Pokémon having fire anywhere near it.
Emil breathed a sigh of relief as his Pokémon masterfully evaded the strike. Now was the perfect time for Sewaddle to attack the Teddiursa from behind.
"Quick! Use String Shot to slow it down and then Tackle it!"
Emil readied a Poke Ball in his right hand. If the Teddiursa took both attacks head on, it would probably be weak enough to catch!
Sewaddle spat a long strand of viscous webbing at the Teddiursa, then started to charge. <Here I come!> he chirped, then launched himself into the air, curving in a graceful arc before he barreled straight towards the Teddiursa.

::teddiursa:: pokemon encounter ! the bear found it oddly amusing. another string shot being fired at him. the sticky threads slowing him down. he felt like he was in slow motion. so he started talking it, too. < coooo-mmmm-inngg... toooooo geee-tttt... yoooo-uuu... > however then the threads dissipated slightly, and he stumbled forward, taking the tackle in the stomach. the bear sat down where he stood, grunting in pain, batting the bug away. though his claws came out, shone white, and extended. he growled low in his throat and smiled. < attaaaack! > he giggled, trying to rake the sewaddle with his almighty claws.

Sewaddle bounced backwards, once again wishing he had a basic move that didn't involve his fragile head. He would have to work with Emil on that one later. The Teddiursa was starting to creep him out. It was waltzing around, weighed down my the multiple String Shots. It was talking like a zombie, and Sewaddle did NOT like zombies. <You're a creepy guy, you know that?> he said to the Teddiursa.
He got a claw to the face for his troubles.
Emil cringed. Pokémon battles could be brutal, especially when sharp claws were involved. The Teddiursa had some fight left in him for sure...another attack wouldn't go amiss. Just to be safe.
"Sewaddle, let's finish this! Use Silver Wind!" he cried.
Sewaddle, grateful for the opportunity to save his aching head, blasted the Teddiursa with a shining, silvery gust that kicked up dust and leaves as it sped towards its victim.
Coinciding with the gust, Emil almost tossed the Poke Ball...but some instinct stayed his hand. He would evaluate the Teddiursa's status once more before he went for the capture. Emil's gut tightened as his very first capture loomed before him.

Pokeball missed! Hit by Silver Wind Used Fake Tears!
"Ohhhhhhh pretty!" The teddiursa said as he watched the silver wind advance upon him as it swirled around him.Lucklily enough for the bear the pokeball had entered the wind at the wrong moment, causing it to bypass the bear and land upon a tree behind him, out of harms way. However, the dust picked up from the wind landed in the teddiursa's eye, casuing him to snivel before releasing a cry from his throat. "It hurts, it hurts so muchhhhhhhhh!" He shouted; in real it didn't hurt that much, but he was just crying in order to get some attention from the trainer and his pokemon so that they would come play with him some more.

"Tough little guy."
Emil swore. He glanced towards Sewaddle, who looked a little ragged, maybe just a little unsteady on his feet. He should wrap up this battle soon, for Sewaddle's sake.
It occurred to him that something felt wrong about his relationship with Sewaddle...he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Something felt impersonal, strained. He'd have to think about it more later when he had time to breathe. He focused on the Teddiursa, who was now faking a sob. Again. Emil cringed, looking at his Pokemon, and sure enough Sewaddle was rocking back and forth, his eyes filled with real tears for the other Pokemon's suffering. He was breaking down emotionally; he wouldn't be able to keep up his fighting spirit much longer.
"Sewaddle, let's show him who's boss! Run around to its side and Tackle it from its blind spot!"
Sewaddle barely understood his orders through the veil of tears. <R-r-really, I'm sorry ab-about all this!> But even if he was sorry, he had to see the thing through. So he shook his head and ran to the Teddiursa's left, ducking under its arm and jumping up to Tackle it.
Emil gripped the Poke Ball tightly. This time for sure.

Yes there had been some pretty attcks and some sticky string shot.. that had been fun.. but he wanted more than that! He wanted to play with the sewaddle, not fight him!
With big round eyes he looked at the bug type and sniffed. <I'm sorry too!> he cried, wishing now that he hadn't smushed all his berries, he could've used them to heal himself! Just then, the little green bug appeared on his left side and tackled him! The bear hadn't noticed him sneaking up on him! The teddiursa rolled over, clutching his side, <Oooooow!> He didn't even have the energy to counter attack, so for the moment he cradled his sore side, wishing this were over...

"This is it!" Emil shouted.
The Teddiursa had been rocked by Sewaddle's Tackle, and it was just lying there, holding its injury. Sewaddle had bounced off to the side, out of harm's way. Emil gripped the Poke Ball in his hand and, for the first time, hurled a Poke Ball towards a wild Pokemon with the intent to capture. The red and white orb hurtled through the air, glinting in the winter sun. Emil watched anxiously, awaiting the outcome.
Sewaddle just sort of sat there. On some level he recognized that the battle was pretty much over and that he could probably chill for a bit. So plopped onto his back, legs in the air, eyes to the sky. It was nice to not have to beat up that nice Teddiursa anymore. He looked up to the bear Pokemon, who was just sitting there. <You could do worse than just letting Emil capture you. Then we could be friends and play together.>
Then Sewaddle decided to take a nap.

pokemon encounter ! The young bear looked intently at the sewaddle. <You promise?> he asked tentatively. <It will be fun right? We can play lots of games together? and he won't make you fight me? And he'll like me..?> But the sewaddle was tired. He had stretched out on his back for a nap.
The teddiursa didn't have long to decide what to do as the pokeball came spinning towards him. But he liked the green bug. Maybe he could like the trainer too? With a thump, the ball bounced off his head and enveloped him in a red glow. This was it. Should he...? The pokeball landed on the ground, rocking back and forth as the pokemon inside struggled to figure out what he wanted. In the end there was a satisfying click and the normal type was caught!

Emil's breath caught. There, sitting on the ground before him, was a Poke Ball...a Poke Ball containing his very first captured Pokemon. He stepped uncertainly towards it, then bent over and grasped it. It didn't feel any heavier...but he knew that the Teddiursa was in there now. He was part of the team now. Emil suddenly grinned and punched the air.
"I did it!" he shouted, to no one in particular.
He lowered his arm, attaching the Poke Ball to the waiting spot on his belt as he did so. He looked over at Sewaddle, who was now happily snoozing on the grass. He looked kind of beaten up. Emil realized that in order to get where he was going, he'd have to put all of his Pokemon through this over and over. They would need to be close in order to trust him to do that. But even if he got through the Gyms, through all of the contests and battles, what then? See all the Pokemon he could? No, that seemed too...not simple, for sure, but underwhelming. He wanted to leave a record behind, like he did with his journals. He wanted people to see what he had done, and benefit from it. That's it, he thought. I'll compile THE guide to Cheyenne. History, facts, Pokemon, people, events...all of it! My life's work! He clenched his fists, almost shaking with anticipation.
Now he had a goal.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Entry 7: Based on what I understand, Cheyenne has a fairly stable seasonal rotation. Warm spring, hot summer, cool fall, cold winter. This probably affects the availability of Pokemon, though I have yet to conduct extensive research into that area. I can say that when it gets cold, it gets REALLY cold. This snow is murder. You never know, though; maybe I'll meet some more interesting Pokemon this way....
Major walked beside him, munching happily on some berries that he had collected on the walk back from Verona City. Emil smiled down at him, and Major smiled back contentedly. Emil had decided to name all of his Pokemon from now on; it just felt better to have something to call them besides their species name. So Sewaddle had become Sho, named for a childhood friend. And Major had sounded like a good name for the little Teddiursa. Sousa had come to him in a flash of insight; it probably had nothing to do with the little bug's personality.
As he walked with Major, he scanned the grass around him for any sign of Pokemon. He had collected some more types of Pokeballs in the city, and was anxious to add to his team. The snow drifted lazily downwards.

Emil flinched as the small, mangy Pokemon rushed at him. It had just appeared out of the grass, foaming and hissing, claws ripping, teeth biting. Emil jumped back with a yelp, but the little rat Pokemon had already sauntered away, humming. Emil was completely bemused. It was like a schizophrenic Pokemon. He looked down at Major, who looked equally confused.
"Might as well try and make friends with it, eh? Go on and talk to it, Major."
Major shook his head rapidly. There was something very wrong with that Pokemon. Still, if Emil wanted him to, he should probably trust in his Trainer's judgment and go ahead. So Major walked cautiously towards the other Pokemon, holding out a pawful of berries.
<Um...you want some berries? They're really sweet and stuff....>

pokemon encounter ! The rattata absently scratched his ear with his hind paw vigorously. It sort of looked like he might have fleas or something.. When the teddiursa approached him he snapped, his tail standing straight up like an antenna. But then he saw the berries. Berries. Food. Food was good! He hadn't eaten very much of it in awhile, maybe he could take this food? But what if it was a trap? What if the bear wanted to smush him? SMUSH HIM LIKE A BUG! The rattata's eyes grew fearful and he hissed, <YOU WILL NOT SMUSH ME!> he yelled, which probably didn't make any sense whatsoever.
Running away sounded like a good plan in the rat's head so he did so. But far from getting away all he did was run in a circle and find himself back in front of the bear again. <Oh? Berries? Don't mind if I do!> he said, grinning as he accepted some of the small colourful fruit. Yep, sanity was definitely not his strong point...
