Eleanor looked up at the steadily pouring sky and took a compact umbrella out from her backpack, unclasping and unfurling it, the patter of rain not fazing her in the slightest.
Eleanor had always preferred rain to obnoxious sunshine. The patter of rain on the ground. The smooth, flawless grey and the change to the ground and air. She felt more at home there. She didn't even mind getting wet. It was therapeutic.
But she wasn't on some vacation. A cold would be most unwelcome. So as she held up her umbrella with one hand, she opened the Pokeball she had received from the Ranger Station dexterously with three fingers, waiting to see what she had received.
A ghostly purple Pokemon popped out, floating through the air as if he were swimming, eyes glazed over with boredom, or interest in something Eleanor couldn't see.
"I suppose I'll call you Lucifer," she remarked casually. The Shuppet did a somersault. Whether it was a sign of assertion or not she didn't know, but she moved forward, with Lucifer casually soaring in her wake, letting out occasional deep inhalations as he swerved to avoid trees and bushes.

“WHERE IS MY BABY?”Thundering through the rain was a massive, almost impossible to distinguish bear. She plodded along on all fours, her wide girth pushing the trees aside – or so it seemed. She squeezed through one of the trees in front of Eleanor and lifted her nose inquisitively. She’d only turned away for a moment to wash her round belly, pregnant, but when she’d turned around her son had vanished. She roared loudly, her trembling voice scaring every other Pokémon in the area away, before she rounded on Eleanor. “Have you seen my baby? He’s this big,” she lifted her paw up slightly off the ground to illustrate his height, “Blue... And has a runny nose. Oh gosh, I can’t find him! He’s gone! I need to find him!” Level: 40 Gender: Female Abilities: Snow Cloak Attacks: Superpower, Powder Snow, Icy Wind, Fury Swipes, Brine, Swagger, Slash, Icicle Crash, Endure Personality: Motherly - Determined - Cautious - Pregnant

Eleanor blinked as a Beartic thundered through the route, the rain lashing its fur. A Pokemon completely absent from this part of Cheyenne, and now suddenly here? Sometimes she didn't get the climate of this strange region. She sighed and massaged her forehead, giving the Pokemon a closer look with a slightly clearer head.
A round,b loated belly. Likely pregnant, and heavily so. Great. She was dealing with, for all intents and purposes, a pregnant, hormonal woman. She looked at Lucifer to translate their thoughts back and forth, since she couldn't understand the Beartic's speech. Pokemon speech was usually possible to decipher, but not when they were as panicked as this.
>No, we haven't seen your kid.< Lucifer did a lazy somersault in the air, but his eyes were dancing with delight. Maybe, just maybe, this Beartic's child was in danger. After all, the mother seemed worried, and baby Pokemon left without any kind of family rarely survived, especially in such cold climates. He would offer to help, just for the adrenaline rush and curiosity this situation delivered straight into his head.
>Would you like some help?< offered Lucifer, his cheeks crinkling as he repressed a malicious smirk. Eleanor felt a drop of sweat roll down her face. They were to help a pregnant Beartic find her child? If the moronic mother had lost it, it was up to nature whether it survived it or not. It wasn't their place to interfere.
But then again, wouldn't this Pokemon's baby be a Cubchoo? She heard those snot nosed little runts sold for a small fortune on the black market, and in more traditional trades, people would hand over rare Pokemon for one as well.
She didn't see why, personally. They weren't even remotely cute, with their drippy noses, constant whimpering, and overly trustful natures. She was aware, of course, that they evolved into ferocious Beartic such as the one before her, but did she feel like raising a brat like that?
Well, she would decide that later. First she had to capture the little runt without provoking the mother, who looked much too strong for Lucifer to take. She glanced at the mother with a sharp-eyed glare, and smirked to herself.
There was profit to be had here, and she would bleed it dry.

::beartic:: Level: 40 Gender: Female Abilities: Snow Cloak Attacks: Superpower, Powder Snow, Icy Wind, Fury Swipes, Brine, Swagger, Slash, Icicle Crash, Endure Personality: Motherly - Determined - Cautious - Pregnant Agrees If she hadn't been so panicked and worried about her child then maybe she would have been paying enough attention to notice that these two didn't seem like the best people to help her out. That ghost was creepy and the trainer looked like a rejected red-headed step child. There wasn't much about either of them that radiated a good or helpful aura. But she was desperate. And so she quickly agreed. "Please yes. I've searched the area behind me... but maybe I missed something? Can you two go double check while I keep walking down this way?" She pointed with a huge paw down the path, the way she was facing and behind Eleanor and poke'mon. Her paw was visibly shaking with her nervousness. Her son. Her poor son.
Before waiting for an answer she charged off past the trainer and her Shuppet, her huge paws making a muffled thundering sound in the snow as she raced off to search for her lost son... hopefully before she had her next child!

As the mother thundered off, Lucifer cackled to himself, and Eleanor couldn't help but allow herself a small smile as well as he turned his grin towards her.
Having ceaselessly obedient Pokemon like Dimitri was all well and good, but a Pokemon that could think for itself and compose plans like that on the spot was always welcome. Having the typical malice filled Ghost Type as a starter would have its benefits, that much was certain.
The rain was dying down, seceding in favour of a thickening fog, but Eleanor didn't put away her umbrella just yet, walking through the brush laden area the Beartic had indicated with an expressionless face, umbrella held in both hands as she occasionally used it to push particularly thick bushes and grass to the side.
As Eleanor scanned the ground, Lucifer scouted from the air, somersaulting lazily, his aesthetically lethargic movements deceptive; he was actually moving rather fast, and his eyes were always sharply focussed for a flash of white or blue.
The stupid baby had probably wandered into a frozen lake and cracked the ice, drowning. Lucifer and Eleanor both knew from experience that baby Pokemon often perished that way in the winter. But a Cubchoo was just too valuable a prize to give up so easily. It wouldn't hurt to look.

::hoothoot:: BEARTIC & CUBCHOO & HOOTHOOT APPEARED ! Beartic was hollering and roaring down the path past Eleanor, but it was in vain. Her baby wasn't in that location at all; he was closer to where the villainous Eleanor was approaching.
The Cubchoo was easily camouflaged in the surrounding, snowed up foliage. A quiet female, she wasn't making any clues about where she was nor what she was up to - the latter being that she was foraging for berries. She'd strayed from her mother for the sole reason that she was hungry and she'd seen the Cheri tree from out of the corner of her eye.
But as she shoved berries into her red-stained mouth, a predator was lurking. As soon as the Cubchoo cried out with pain at the spicy taste of the berries, the predator, a Hoothoot, launched a Hypnosis at the baby and prepared to make her his next meal. That cry was probably the last clue of where the baby was hiding.
Off searching fruitlessly

Eleanor heard a cry of fear or panic or some other such emotion at the same time Lucifer did, and smiled to herself. That sounded like a young Pokemon, probably in danger. She could turn this in her favour and reap the rewards. How wonderful. A Hoothoot had sent hypnotic waves at the Cubchoo, who now lay asleep in the snow covered foliage. Her mouth was stained red, presumably from the spicy red Cheri Berries steadfastly growing even in this winter freeze. "I don't think so," muttered Eleanor, guessing the Hoothoot's intent. She would be interfering with nature, yes, she thought as Lucifer flew towards them with a tiny grin on his face, prepared for the dangerous battle he so adored. But it wouldn't be so bad if the Hoothoot took the Cubchoo's place in death now, would it? "Screech and Pursuit," murmured Eleanor quietly, hoping to get the drop on the Hoothoot. Despite his sharp sense of sound, he was focussing on the Cubchoo right now. Hopefully enough for a pre-emptive strike. Lucifer somersaulted through the air, getting as close to the Hoothoot's face as possible and opening his mouth wide, letting out a high pitched, ear rending screech which echoed through Route 1. It was unlikely to wake the artificially induced sleep of the Cubchoo, but no doubt it would have an effect on the sound sensitive avian. That done, Lucifer focussed on the Hoothoot again, his eyes pulsing, red circles of light emanating in groups of three and soaring towards the Hoothoot. Now that was how to start off a battle. Lucifer giggled maliciously to himself. ::shuppet::

Well let me add you as desert then!< He said angrily as he hoped to get a good shot in against his foe.
While that was happening the Cubchoo was still sleeping soundlessly as she was young, naive, and needed a lot of sleep. While she was out, her mother seemed to have completely disappeared, possibly fell down a slope or got caught by humans, or died, or something. Too bad!

Lucifer chuckled as the Hoothoot lunged at him. All a Hoothoot knew at this stage were Normal Type moves. There was no way that it could hurt a Ghost Type like himself. He didn't even need to try to dodge this pathetic attempt at resistance. Unfortunately, Lucifer was to be unpleasantly surprised when the Hoothoot's Tackle rammed into him as though he was corporeal. A dull pain flared up in his stomach and he floated back a few inches. Of course...Hoothoot knew Foresight. What a big dumb dumb he had been. Resetting his smirk, Lucifer realised he was enjoying himself. Fighting like this was fun. Made him feel alive. Looking to Eleanor for his next orders, he was greeted with a sigh. "Repeat your last two moves. If we reduce its defense it'll be easier to take out."Lucifer nodded eagerly, and unleashed another Screech on the Hoothoot's sensitive ears, before unleashing another barrage of pulsating spirals from his multicoloured eyes. ::shuppet::

::hoothoot:: ::cubchoo:: pokemon encounter ! ahh! stop that noise! as the ghost type pokemon began screeching like a banshee once more, the noise rattled in his ear sockets. immediately his taloned feet began clawing at his ears. < make it stoooop! > he cried out. because he'd taken a moment of time to claw away at himself, he was hit directly by the shuppet's pursuit. he gasped in shock as a much stronger blow was hit. when he was trying to get his ears to stop ringing, he was in full unprotected mode. if that made sense. he was a sure target. right out in the open. hoothoot did the only offensive attack he knew. once he regained some of his balance, the small owl lunged himself at the shuppet.
a full length body check. only, weaker. the feathered foe had himself in a tangle. he was being beaten to death by a shuppet. okay, so the hoothoot could hit back now. that wasn't the point. at all. it was the fact that he was losing that was making it such a big deal. < you stop doing that. right now! > he bellowed. at once, the baby owl fluffed up his feathers, baring his teeth.. err beak.

Lucifer let out a gasp and ducked aside to dodge the incoming Tackle, more prepared this time. Not to mention the baby avian was getting disoriented and weakening. Clearly one who wasn't used to fighting to survive. Probably new to hunting for himself. Not even out of the mother's nest yet. Eleanor smiled to herself. And to think this was likely the first and most definitely the last time this bird would hunt. It sent a shiver of excitement through her body. This was what she had missed holed up in Team Death HQ all this time. The ability to decide where a life started and ended. To judge the weak from the strong. Lucifer was unbalanced by the dodge. He would only be able to unleash one attack. "Pursuit," commanded Eleanor simply, and the Ghost Type righted himself and smirked at the rapidly tiring Hoothoot, yet another cluster of energy released from his eyes and rushing rapidly at the Hoothoot. ::shuppet::

the hoothoot watched as his moves made contact, letting out a smirk as they did such. he couldn't help but want to hop up and down in place as they did, he could win this! he knew it! there really wasn't anything there to stop him, except for, well, the other was proving to be a rather tougher opponent that what he was used to. either way, the smirk was planted rather firmly across his face. the pursuit essentially wiped the smirk right off his face. he made an 'oof' sound as the wind left his lungs. > oh, you want to play dirty, huh? < he gave a cocky smirk. before launching at the dark grey figure.
the cubchoo, which wasn't completely forgotten, mind you, had officially woken up. > momma? < she asked, groggily rubbing her eyes. where could her mommy possibly be? she remembered sneaking off to eat cheri berries, she was going to go straight back! > wh-where's my momma? < she whimpered, watching the shupper and hoothoot went at it.

Eleanor and Lucifer both heard the Cubchoo as she awoke, and Lucifer was sufficiently distracted to be batted aside by the Hoothoot's Tackle, landing on the ground with a hiss of pain. The attack had hit harder than it should have, and Lucifer could feel the ache in his ribs intensifying. "Your mommy's vanished," Eleanor frowned at the Cubchoo. She wasn't frantic, so she could understand her much better than she could her Beartic mother. "We asked this Hoothoot if he had seen her, and he laughed and said that you would never see her again."Keeping up the pretense, she yelled at Lucifer. "Now Lucifer! Attack that evildoer with Screech and Pursuit!" A sweat drop rolled down her face. She was laying it on a little thick at this point but it would hopefully lead to less complication in the long run. "Cover your ears," she said to the Cubchoo as gently as possible, a split second before Lucifer opened his mouth and let loose a third screech, before sending a fourth bombardment of dark energy at the Hoothoot. the trainer walked over to the cubchoo, and gave her direct instructions to cover her ears. so, what did the cubchoo do? well, she covered her ears, of course! her paws flew up faster than you could say "borb" as she pressed her ears against her ears as hard as she could, closing her eyes for good measure.
the hoothoot on the other hand took no such adivse, and was hit by the screech. then again by the pursuit. except, instead of tackling at the shuppet, he instead fell to the ground. > i'd have gotten that away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling trainers, and your stupid poke'mon, too! <

Eleanor smiled internally, while keeping a straight face on the outside. "I think your mother's dead," said Eleanor sympathetically. "And let me teach you a lesson." For the first time now, she was a little bit serious as she looked at the unconscious Hoothoot.
"All of your problems can be solved with violence. Just focus on the anger and you'll be fine," she muttered as she glared down at the Hoothoot. "This thing killed your mother and tried to kill you."
She took a seat on a snowy branch, brushing the snow off with gloved hands. "How does that make you feel?" she asked as she dangled one leg over the other and held onto the ends of her scarf with one hand, smiling gently at tyhe Cubchoo as Lucifer looped lethargically in the air, only half paying attention to this exchange unless the Cubchoo did what Eleanor was trying to make her do.

the cubchoo's jaw dropped when the talk about her mother dead reached her ears. her mother was. . . dead? that couldn't be, she was just with her mom not too long ago! all she did was run off to go investigate something and then she got taken away by the hoothoot and- it was all her fault! if she didn't go off like that, her mother would be alive and hugging her!
when was she going to wake up and have this all be a dream?
a tear slipped down her face before she realized it, and then another. was she crying? she looked over at Eleanor. > it makes me mad. < she hissed, before clawing at her face to wipe off the tears.

Eleanor smiled. "That's right." She spoke softly, playing with a strand of hair. "And you should do the same, shouldn't you? You're just a kid, so I understand you don't know this stuff yet. But this is the only way you'll learn."
She smiled at the baby Cubchoo. "It's time you took revenge on this murderer." She indicated the unconscious Hoothoot with a hand. "I've weakened it for you, but I'll tell you this much. Every problem you have can be solved with blood."
She stood up. "Now, you can do this, realise what the world is, and come with me. Or you can walk away if you think you can handle the world alone. It's up to you." She fell silent as Lucifer hovered overhead, letting the Cubchoo think.

::cubchoo:: FEMALE lv 3 ICE Snow Cloak Powder Snow Loves to Eat - Quiet - Reckless agrees She looked at the Hoothoot. And she felt something red hot bubbling up inside of her. Mommy. Why was mommy gone? Was it really this creature's fault? Maybe? Why shouldn't she believe this trainer? She had saved her after all. What was she going to do without mommy? Did she have a chance at surviving out here alone? Probably not. Did she have any real choice besides going with the trainer who saved her skin? Not really. She wiped her nose on her arm and then wandered closer to Eleanor's feet. She stood up on his hind legs and looked up at the rather intimidating trainer and her Shuppet. "Okay. I'll come with you." She said calmly, perhaps with a bit of sadness for her lost mother?

"Alright." Eleanor withdrew a Pokeball and extended it outwards towards the Cubchoo. "Just touch this and you'll officially be a member of my team."
Without waiting for an answer, she dropped the Pokeball beside the Cubchoo, waiting for her to touch it and get inside.
She was glad the baby Cubchoo had made it so easy, really. It would have been a pain in the ass to have to beat a second Pokemon into submission, after all.

The Cubchoo pressed a paw against her maw for a moment, staring at the Pokéball with wonder. Wait, didn’t trainers usually throw the Pokéball and beam their target in the face with it? The Cubchoo sniffed in an obnoxiously loud manner and wiped her snout with the back of her paw, wiping away the icy mucus.
And then she reached out and nudged it. The capsule was red and white with a little bit of a nub in the middle – like a button? Oh, was that what she was meant to touch? She tapped it once and it sucked her inside, and immediately she started to panic. It felt like dark tendrils were dragging her into the Pokéball and she wailed, the noise soundless to Eleanor outside of the Pokéball.
It rocked three times and she burst out again, shivering as though she had a chill. “That... That’s scary,” she stammered, and bit her bottom lip contemplatively. She paused and gazed up with wide, owl-like eyes, wanting some encouragement. “Do I have to go in there?”
