APPEARANCE:Standing at a modest five feet and six inches, Nina is pretty average looking for a girl of her age. Her figure is still a bit underdeveloped and on the scrawnier side with her barely muscled limbs that look almost too long for her and a couple of ribs that jut from her sides. At first glance she looks almost frail and delicate but that suggestion couldn’t be further from the truth. Surprisingly athletic and exceptionally adventurous, Nina’s caramel-toned skin is riddled with scrapes and cuts from whatever her latest escapade might have been. If you got a little closer to her, you might notice some of the features of her round face framed by short and fluffy dark brown hair. One of these features is her eyes, which are a captivating yellow-hazel and sort of almond-shaped, giving her an almost feline appearance. Below her eyes and unkempt eyebrows sits a pointed nose and a small mouth that seems to be perpetually curled in a proud smirk.
Nina’s apparel is very simple but very comfortable. Her outfit of choice is a black baggy tank top emblazoned with a small orange flame that a friend got her when they were vacationing on Cinnabar Island, a pair of baggy orange basketball shorts with a white stripe extending down the outside of both legs, and a pair of black and white sneakers that look like they’ve gone to hell and back. In addition to this Nina possesses a couple of other tee shirts and a couple of pairs of jeans that she carries in a black backpack that never leaves her sight. In fact, she carries everything in that particular backpack, and can fit an incredible number of things in there.
For a visual reference, Nina has a couple of really dumb drawings that a friend drew trying to practice their limited artistic ability. Even though they are not the best, Nina has them saved in a shoebox at home along with other sentimental gifts because she's just that nice of a friend. ◆ ◆
PERSONALITY:
- ADVENTUROUS – Nina feels like her time is being wasted if she’s not out having a new experience and accomplishing something. She’s always looking for the next great challenge and will be the first to step into lands unknown regardless of the risk. She loves the thrill of seeing things few have ever seen and overcoming obstacles others might give up on. Of course, this also tends to get her into trouble when she starts poking around things that she shouldn’t, but if there wasn’t any risk it wouldn’t be nearly as fun!
- PROUD – Probably Nina’s greatest fault is her excessive pride. While confidence in oneself is an admirable trait, Nina takes it to an extreme. If she feels like she is wronged she will often take some sort of childish course of action until she is apologized to. She will almost never admit that she made a mistake and even if she does it’s usually too little too late. Nina also very seldom asks for help even when she is in dire need of it which causes a whole other set of problems.
- OUTGOING – Nina loves to meet new people and have new experiences, so she usually jumps at the chance to make a new friend. With strangers she’s usually the first to strike up a well-intentioned conversation, and is the first to introduce themselves even to the most shy and withdrawn individuals. Even though she means well, sometimes Nina can be too exuberant and outgoing and she finds herself unintentionally annoying people.
- VULGAR – There isn’t much of anything about Nina that most would consider to be lady-like, especially when she is most at ease. She can cuss like a sailor when she’s mad or when she just feels like spewing a bunch of profanity to get a point across. Depending on how hungry she is and the setting she finds herself in her table manners go out the window, and she takes pride in how loudly she can belch (she claims that one time after dinner back home she burped so loudly it woke up everyone in a one-block radius of her house). And occasionally if she’s around company as vulgar as herself she’ll go out of her way to catcall to any attractive ladies and gentlemen that she sees. Maybe the worst part is how totally unapologetic Nina is for how vulgar and crass she can be; hey, if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen!
- LOYAL – If you can put up with how loud, obnoxious, and vulgar Nina is, you have a friend that will stick by you through thick and thin. She understands how much of a pain in the ass she can be so she values the few folks that can put up with her. Nina sticks by her friends and family through thick and thin, acting as everything from a confidante to a white knight should conflict arise. Having Nina as a friend means having someone that will stick by you through thick and thin, no matter the odds and no matter what comes your way.
HISTORY:Nina’s childhood and upbringing was pretty normal for a kid like her, so typical it could almost be called cliché. She was born and raised in Saffron City, a bustling metropolis where Pokemon seemed just as abundant as people, especially considering that it was home to a well-known Pokemon gym. She grew up with her mother, father, and an Arcanine that the two had owned for as long as either could remember. Her parents, one now a stay-at-home father and the other an employee at Silph Co., had been trainers in their youth and would often tell stories of the things they accomplished and the adventures they had. It might have been the stories that her parents told of their own adventures that first sparked Nina’s now fanatic interest in Pokemon training. They had both traveled throughout Kanto and Johto in their youth and collected several gym badges that sat proudly on display in a glass case in their living room. Nina would often catch herself staring at them longingly, wishing for the day that she would make her own mark as a Pokemon trainer.
Growing up, Nina had everything she needed to be a happy, healthy child. She was certainly a rambunctious child if nothing else. She often spent her time on the outskirts of town hoping to catch sight of a promising Pokemon lurking in the tall grass or in town watching local trainers battle and parade their own Pokemon about. And Nina was certainly apt to getting in trouble. She would often loudly and obnoxiously yell and cheer for whoever her favorite trainer was from the sidelines and nearly got into a couple of scrapes with angry trainers and sore losers whose fury at having lost became directed on the punk kid making an idiot of themselves on the side. Every now and again Nina might even get into a fight with another child of her age over which trainer was the best or whose parents were the better trainers and she would have to be escorted home by a friend before things escalated. There was certainly a great variety of people and Pokemon to be seen. Trainers came through Saffron from every corner of the region and many made their way back and forth between Johto and Kanto on the Magnet Train.
By the time she had turned sixteen, Nina grew weary of sitting around and waiting for the day she would start her own journey. Many of her friends had already left from home and took to whatever region seemed most promising to them to test their mettle as trainers, coordinators, breeders, and the like. Nina decided that it was time for her to leave home herself. Her parents accepted this decision and gave her the tools necessary to do so, and Nina decided to make her own start somewhere beyond the settings of the same old stories she heard of from her father and mother and everyone else in her life. She decided to go to the region of Cheyenne because to Nina it seemed like a place that she could write her own story in a place that she could call her own.
In terms of interactions with people and Pokemon, Nina managed to get along with people who could stand her boldness and occasional obnoxiousness, but her relationship with Pokemon has been a bit smoother. She has always had at least a bit of respect for the mysterious creatures having grown up with a rather large and rather old Arcanine and having parents that have at least tried to instill a reverence for these creatures that humans shared the planet with. She has never personally owned a Pokemon or battled on herself but her strategy of dealing with and training Pokemon has been to act as a coach training a professional athlete and to treat such creatures as sentient beings rather than weapons to pit against each other. However, her competitive fervor and her pride tend to get the best of her, and she might forget to respect her Pokemon and treat them well (though if she did it wouldn’t be intentional and eventually she would realize what a moron she was being).
GOALS:Nina’s goal in Cheyenne is simple;she’s here to kick ass and chew gum- and she’s all out of gumshe wants to assemble a team of the most awesome Pokemon ever, use them to beat every trainer in her path, and defeat every gym leader in the region and eventually become a Pokemon Champion!
