A light drizzle had graced the afternoon, and most people in town were in good spirits, despite having damp clothes.
Murasaki was not most people.
The rain was irritating to her, mostly because it meant that it was nigh impossible to light a cigarette in this weather. Her lighter hardly had a drop of water on it and it still wouldn't even spark. It was an irritating situation and she gritted her teeth at the contraption. Most places in town wouldn't allow her to smoke inside and she didn't have to pocket cash to hit up a bar at the moment.
Most of her day had been spent wandering around town when she spied a tent at the fork of the road. She had been there just a few days ago and remembered that moment well. There was a young man wearing some bright spangled uniform that walked up to her when she was in the middle of a smoke. He had shooed her away from that tent, saying something about the wildlife.
Today, with nothing else to do, she was intrigued by that little tent. Was it a zoo of some sort, or a safari? Perhaps a combination of the two like the one she had seen in Fuscia City? Whatever the case, she decided it was time to check it out, and followed the trail down to its entrance.

It was nice being outside in the rain, especially when the Ranger Station was humid as ever. Ranger Mei sat idly under a golf cart as she texted rapidly on her cell phone, concentrating as she quickly deleted the typos that dappled her message. One over here, one over there, this stupid phone made communication so hard. At least intelligent conversation was an issue, much to her dismay. She sighed and absentmindedly patted her Ivysaur's head, mostly to keep Sara happy as the plant continued to nuzzle against her arm. <I'm glad the rains are back. You should stop texting and enjoy it.> The Ivysaur advised, attempting to get her trainer out and about. Since she was a grass type, she adored the rain! She couldn't find a fault with it, and after the dry spell they were having, it was very much appreciated.
"Not now, Sara. I'd rather not get wet." Mei sighed, finally pressing the all important send button to a good friend of hers. By 'good friend', that actually meant secret crush. Not that she'd ever admit it to anyone, even if the entire Ranger Station acted as if they knew about it. They simply couldn't mind their own business, could they? Snapping her phone shut and slipping it into her pocket, she smiled and plopped the Ivysaur on her lap. Sara was such a cutie patootie, and she had been awfully lucky to get a Bulbasaur from the Ranger Station herself. They were life partners, best friends, all of that cool stuff! <Mei, I think we have company.> Sara used her vines to force Mei's head around, staring at Murasaki curiously as the girl wandered to the tent.
It definitely looked as if they had work to do, which meant they were going to get a little wet. Not that Mei minded! It wasn't as if her cell would get drenched out here in the rain. Her pocket was dry enough, or at least she assumed it was. "Oi! Hey you! Wanna Pokemon?" Mei laughed, waving energetically as she ran up to Murasaki with a cheerful beam. Sara trotted behind her, struggling to keep up with Mei's longer legs. "Interested? I can help you out." Mei spun around in her spot, completely overjoyed at the prospect of helping out a potential trainer.

There was a scent in the air that grew stronger the closer Murasaki neared the tent, the musky one of greenery right after a drizzle. Off to the side of the tent, she noticed out of her peripheral vision there was someone sitting on a nearby golf cart, minding her own business. Though she was somewhat interested in eavesdropping, Murasaki continued walking, paying only partial attention to what was going on. The girl -- she assumed it was a girl, but couldn't tell from the distance -- had a cell phone open and a chubby Pokemon by her side with a closed flower on its back. It nudged her arm slightly as she continued to peck into the phone's minute keyboard.
She thought she heard a mumble from the human as she turned to acknowledge the friendly creature. It likely belonged to her, she assumed, like some sort of family pet. It was a hefty Pokemon, but she picked it up with relative ease and placed it on her lap. Suddenly, a set of vines poked out from underneath of the Pokemon's flower and grabbed the girl by the head, turning it in Murasaki's direction.
She stopped cold in her tracks and looked directly at the teenage girl for the first time. She was wearing some bright red uniform. Putting two and two together, Murasaki surmised that whatever was going on at the tent, she was involved somehow, perhaps an employee or volunteer. The notion was pretty much confirmed as the energetic youngster got up from the golf cart and dashed over to her, bright eyed and grinning.
"Oi! Hey you! Wanna Pokemon?" she shouted. The Pokemon that the girl had was scrambling to keep up with her, dashing as quickly as it could with its stubby paws. "Interested? I can help you out," she said with a beaming smile.
"Slow down a second, kiddo," Murasaki quipped. "I still have no idea who you are or what's going on. What's with the tent, and what's this about a Pokemon? Is this whole operation just another scam or what?" As she waited for a reply, she pushed some of her damp hair out of her face. At least she was getting a free shower today...

♔ Age 15. Female. Rookie Ranger that doesn't really know what she's doing. She can wing it when it comes to Pokémon training, but she has a terrible time following instructions. She's a witty child, but a horrible listener.
Kiddo? Mei pouted at the new nickname, not expecting to be treated like a kid so swiftly. She was nearly the age of consent, which had to count for something. "I'm not a kid. I have a job, ya know." She frowned, crossing her arms as she frowned at Murasaki. It didn't help that she was so short compared to the 22 year old, which only added to her child like features. It seemed as if Murasaki had some issues with the whole Ranger Station concept, which confused Mei a little. Tilting her head as she pondered all of those questions, she wondered where she could even start. "Um...I could get you my supervisor, but he's out on patrol." She supposed she could try to handle this on her own, but most people that came here knew what was going on. This was so weird! She gave Sara a confused look, while the Ivysaur made the shape of a question mark with her vines. 'Well, aren't you helpful, miss punctuation?' She couldn't help but think, sighing as she faced Murasaki on her own.
"My name is Mei, and I'm one of the Rangers here at the station. I'm in training, but that doesn't mean I can't do things by myself." She stated proudly, completely ignoring the part about this being a scam. She had no idea how she could even prove that this was all legit anyways. Sure, she had a badge and an ID on hand, but would that event amount to anything when presented to a stranger? She had no clue, but she figured she might as well talk until Murasaki had a pleasant expression. She was looking for facial expressions, and so far she was getting negative ones.
"People come here for a Starter Pokémon. It's kind of like the lab, but it's completely random. Some people call us Rangers of Fate. Kind of dumb, but in a way it's true. You get what you get." She mused, waiting to see if she could get Murasaki in the Ranger Station. "We're a nonprofit organization, completely supported by Ace Academy." She managed to pipe in, hoping that the name would ring some bells in Murasaki's head. If not, then she really had no idea where to start.

The girl pouted, a clear sign that she was just the opposite of what she was claiming to be. "I'm not a kid," she almost whined. "I have a job ya know." She scowled and crossed her arms, her eyes looking away from her older apparent companion.
"Ya could've fooled me," Murasaki though, careful to not say it out loud. For all she knew, this could be the poor girl's first day on the job, and she didn't want to have deal with her whining at every offensive comment she made.
She tilted her head like a confused Meowth, the kind you might see in macro images on the net. It was almost cute in a sense, but in the same way, annoying. "Um... I could get you my supervisor, but he's out on patrol," she replied, once again not giving her client the information she wanted. The Pokemon at her side seemed to realize this more than the girl and made a question mark shape with the vines that had been so helpful earlier. Fortunately, it seemed to get her on the right track.
"My name is Mei, and I'm one of the Rangers here at the station. I'm in training, but that doesn't mean I can't do things by myself." There was a sense of dignity and pride in the girl's voice, but the only thing that Murasaki could think was, "Treehugger..."
The girl seemed nervous about what to do next, but tried to keep a smile on her face instead of the frown that currently graced it. "People come here for a Starter Pokemon. It's kind of like the lab, but it's completely random. Some people call us Rangers of Fate. Kind of dumb, but in a way, it's true. You get what you get."
Mei paused for a moment, waiting for a verbal response, but she got none. Murasaki was busy mulling it over. She took a quick glance at her bag. Within one of the side pockets were two small bulges, the balls of the Koffing and Carvanha that she already had. In a sense, she felt like she would be taking advantage of these people if she were to walk away with a Pokemon... but at the same time, she really didn't care.
"We're a nonprofit organization, completely supported by Ace Academy," Mei said to break the ice.
"Never heard of it," Murasaki said bluntly. "I'm from a good way outta town, but I'm always up for a good gamble. Sounds like this could be a fun little game." Half of her was talking to Mei, the other half was talking to herself. "I'm interested."
She glanced off at the tent one more time. Just how many Pokemon were under that thing anyway? Either way, a free Pokemon was a free Pokemon, even if she got stuck with a Magikarp. Besides, she'd always have her Koffing to fall back on if she got stuck with something crappy... Or her Carvanha if she could ever manage to tame the thing.
"So it all takes place over there under that tent? Like a Safari Game? Or am I supposed to wrestle these Pokemon with my bare hands?"

RANGER MEI & SARA !♔ Age 15. Female. Rookie Ranger that doesn't really know what she's doing. She can wing it when it comes to Pokémon training, but she has a terrible time following instructions. She's a witty child, but a horrible listener. Mei could almost feel the scorn of the girl she was explaining all of this to, feeling more and more like it was a waste of time. The notion that her information wasn't appreciated got to her and she couldn't help but fidget with her thumbs a little. When she mentioned Ace Academy, Murasaki immediately changed the subject and thus nullified Mei's efforts. Oh well. The rookie ranger was too nervous at this point to care.
She was pleased, at least, that the lady was interested in their little service. A welcoming, albeit fake smile alighted her face when the casual girl shot a few more questions. "Actually, the only thing you have to do is throw the pokeball. My partner here does most of the work." She glanced at her Ivysaur in recognition and the creature, a natural show off, flipped over and balanced on two vines while waving one of her forepaws in greeting.
"Oh! Better not stand around in this rain too long. The tent's there for a reason." She pivoted and took a few steps towards the ever-familiar circus-sized tent. "Follow me, please." She invited, glancing back directly at Murasaki. Something told her that the newcoming trainer was going to rebel in some way, so she was on her guard. Meanwhile, Sara had scrambled off, taking the hint to go look for a pokemon to drag kicking and screaming back to the tent.

"Actually, the only thing you have to do here is throw the Pokeball," Mei responded, still smiling. "My partner here does most of the work."
"Ah, that's good t' hear..." Murasaki's voice trailed off as she finished her sentence. She certainly was glad that she'd have someone doing most of this for her. Her mind was wandering off to her previous bout with a Pokemon, the Carvanha that had nearly cost her a good toe and could have bitten her arm off if had gotten too close. Perhaps it wasn't a bad idea to have a spunky guide with her, even if they weren't getting along well at the moment.
The Pokemon that was following her seemed to be giving its formal introduction, doing a sort of handstand with its vines and waving with its actual foot.
"Oh! Better not stand around in this rain too long. The tent's there for a reason." She made a quick 90 degree turn to face where the path was going. "Follow me, please."
"You think most of the Pokemon would enjoy getting a little rain," she mused, trying to make small-talk. In all honesty, she had no clue what most Pokemon would like. Her Koffing was the only one she'd really interacted with and he certainly didn't enjoy getting wet. Then again, the leafy Pokemon following Mei seemed to be enjoying the afternoon drizzle.
The two entered the tent together, Murasaki behind her guide. She gazed up at the ceiling. This place was certainly bigger on the inside than it was on the outside.
Mei's Pokemon was already on the move, heading out another part of the tent. Where it was going she hadn't the faintest idea.
Murasaki looked around, waiting for the Pokemon to return or for Mei to act. There were others around her here and there, around half of them wearing the same get up as her "partner". Apparently, this Ranger thing was a big deal in this town. It was a wonder she'd never noticed it before.

She's a witty child, but a horrible listener. "You'd think." Mei replied and quickly shrugged as well. "But you know, some fire types... and being wet isn't always pleasant." She tried to explain why maybe poke'mon wouldn't like getting wet. But she was stumbling and tripping over every word and idea she tried to force out of her mouth. She even included hand gestures as she spoke, just to make her point clearer. It wasn't helping her. "And you know, somethings if you can avoid something you'll do just that because you can!" Oh god. A train-wreck of an argument. At least that last statement was semi-clear. Mei leaned against a counter, tapping her fingers on the counter- waiting anxiously for Sara to return with a wild poke'mon.
::poliwag::
From outside the tent flap there was a loud 'crack' sound, like a wet towel hitting wet skin. Sara shrieked and backed through the tent flaps. One of her vines held a wild poke'mon as far away from her as she could manage. Her blue face was bright red on one side. The Poliwag was hanging from one of its feet and it looked angrily at Sara, its thin tail flicking back and forth, hitting anything it could as it was dragged into the tent. Sara whimpered, wincing when the tail came too close to her for comfort. <I'm sorry... I'm sorry... I'm sorry....>

She paused for a moment and shrugged her shoulders. "But you know, some fire-types... and being wet isn't always pleasant."
The rest of what she said was just garbled jargon to Murasaki. She didn't particularly care about Pokemon, at least, not to the degree that Mei clearly did. It was irritating having to listen to her ramble on. In the middle of the conversation, she leaned over on a nearby counter, drumming her fingers against it anxiously. She continued flapping her lips until she was out of words to use. Then, what sounded like a cracking whip broke the silence between the two of them.
Mei's partner Pokemon stumbled back into the tent, letting out a loud howl as it did. The creature had a large red mark on the side of its muzzle, a clear sign that it had put up a struggle. With a degree of difficulty, it managed to haul in a rounded, blue Pokemon with a nearly transparent tail. It flailed around midair, trying to strike Mei's Pokemon. It was struggling to keep its energetic quarry from breaking free.
"I like it," Murasaki said with a grin. "It don't look like much, but it's got some spunk to it." She glanced back over at Mei, a little confused about what to do next. "You said that I'm just supposed to throw a Pokeball, right? Is this the time or do I need to wait more?"
It seemed like waiting too much longer would be an impossibility. The rounded critter was ready to break loose at any given point in time. Maybe she would have to wrestle it after all...

::rangerf:: ::ivysaur:: In an awkward moment when the trainer probably needed Mei more than ever, the pokemon ranger simply walked away from her and went back into the tent as she was standing there, wondering if it was time to throw the pokeball or to wait a bit longer for the Poliwag to possibly escape or something. Sara, the Ivysaur looked befuddled also as she saw her trainer suddenly walk away like that, leaving her alone with this new person and a fainted Poliwag. >Uh... what? What? What? What do I do now?!< She wondered as she looked back into the tent to see if the ranger was coming back any time soon. But Ranger Mei did not seem to be doing that at all. Instead, it was also too quiet in between them, as if the ranger went to take a nap or something. When she finally returned, she had a bag in her hand. But still, she had not answered the question.

She was as silent and meek as a startled infant. Her partner Pokemon was just as befuddled as Murasaki was, looking away from its battle with wide eyes.
Suddenly, the girl simply turned and walked away, going out of the tent. Murasaki's jaw dropped. She stammered a few times before she finally managed to form a coherent sentence, but by that time, Mei was already outside of the tent.
"Where the hell are you going?!" she screamed. Her patients for the youthful Ranger had finally slipped away. "Damn it kid!"
Her head was throbbing now; she could hear her pulse in her ears. She stared blankly at the two Pokemon. Their battle had ended now and the smaller of them was unconscious.
Murasaki drummed her fingers on the same table Mei had been leaning on earlier. She gritted her teeth, looking at the girl's Pokemon anxiously. She didn't want to look threatening, but it was difficult to avoid it at this point.
Finally, Mei came back in the tent, still not saying a word, but holding a bag. She could see a set of bulges in the side of it -- Pokéballs no doubt. Almost immediately, Murasaki swiped the bag out of her hand, letting out a displeased grunt at the same time. She rummaged through one of the pockets and pulled out a small red and white orb and pressed the button on it.
Without a second thought, she tossed it at the knocked out Pokemon and it was enveloped in a white light. The Pokeball fell to the ground and began to wobble back and forth. She didn't dare take her eyes off of it, even though she was tempted to scold the Ranger-in-training one more time. This was more important.

----- RANGER MEI & SARA !
♔ Age 15. Female. Rookie Ranger that doesn't really know what she's doing. She can wing it when it comes to Pokémon training, but she has a terrible time following instructions. She's a witty child, but a horrible listener.
Pokeball, meet Poliwag. Mei stared in shock as Murasaki threw the sphere like an expert, forcing the water type into the Pokeball before it could protest. Once the ball clamped shut on the Poliwag, the deed was done. Sure, the water critter could fight and fight in an attempt to escape, but there was a powerful Ivysaur waiting on the other side to ensure its capture. To the Poliwag, the situation was hopeless. There was little that could be done to evade the situation, so with a submissive sigh, the Poliwag was captured. That didn't mean that it had to be happy about the events, but it could tolerate them for the time being. Mei let out a sigh of relief when the Poliwag stopped fighting, mostly glad that they didn't have to continue this brutal struggle. "And there you have it! Ta daaaa!" She laughed, clapping her hands to give Murasaki some feeling of accomplishment.
To Sara, her trainer only accomplished looking sillier than she had to be. <I'm so sorry about all of this.> The Ivysaur whined to the new trainer, hoping there wouldn't be too many hard feelings after this. The Poliwag was captured, and she seemed to like the Pokemon she found anyways. All in all, this couldn't have been the worst possible outcome. The Ivysaur still thought she could've done a better job, and hopelessly slunk behind her trainer to avoid any of Murasaki's retorts. "Aha! So um. Before you go, you have everything you need and you're all set. Off to the first route with ya! I hear they have nice sights! I think the swarms are over there, but they shouldn't be too scary. It's not like they're all level 50." Mei let out a loud laugh, completely oblivious to the danger of swarms in the routes. Sure, she heard the other rangers gossip about them, but how bad could they be?

After a few seconds of wobbling around, the Pokéball clicked shut, indicating that the energetic little Poliwag had just had the fight beaten out of it. Murasaki walked over to the ball and reached down for it, noting that Mei's Pokemon was still guarding it like a soldier before she picked it up. Without hesitation, she slipped it into her bag, then turned back to Mei, who was cheering her on.
"And there you have it! Ta daaaa!" she shouted, giving an applause for the new trainer's accomplishment.
"Yeah, no thanks to you," she thought. Still, she was adamant enough to not let the comment slip.
"Aha!" the girl laughed. She was trying to make light of her apparent failure on the job it seemed. "So um. Before you go, you have everything you need and you're all set.
"Oh, you mean the stuff in this bag?" she said, holding it up. "In that case, I suppose I should just take the stuff from inside it. I won't be needing this sack, considering I already have my own." She quickly stripped the bag of all its contents, taking note of what exactly was inside. There were the basics -- berries, Potions, and Pokéballs -- but what really caught her eye was an electronic device, a Pokédex she presumed. That would certainly help later down the road.
She paced back over to Mei and handed her the empty bag, stripped of all its contents. Murasaki looked back over at her partner Pokemon. It was displaying a rather nervous look, apparently showing concern for how she'd been treating its trainer. She mentally shook her head. There was no way that a Pokemon knew she'd been insulting Mei, was there? The thought was soon shoved out of her mind as Mei began talking again.
"Off to the first route with ya!" she shouted. "I hear they have nice sights! I think the swarms are over there, but they shouldn't be too scary. It's not like they're all level 50."
"I'd like to get some rest in town before going off on any crazy adventures... at least until the rain stops," she replied, half speaking to herself. "But you -- I'd advise that you wise up a little and gain some confidence. You're never going to get through life acting like you do. Take your failures in stride, and whatever you do, don't act like you did here to any other clients."
Her advice was somewhat hypocritical. Who was she to judge how Mei could and couldn't act? But at the same time, her words were sound, almost as a sort of apology. That Pokemon following her around was starting to grate on her conscience... whatever parts of it she had, anyway.
She slung her bag over her shoulder and walked out of the tent. The rain had begun to pick up and her bangs fell flat into her face, but she didn't mind. There were other things to think about.
