(ModNote: Just a note, and not one that necessarily needs to be heeded, but I would prefer if mods refrained from using those color box framey things while modding me. Some of them display strangely on my computer and all the different ones for the same thread break the flow when I reread large threads.)

The sunlight streamed gently down through the trees and onto Elliot’s path as he stepped onto route one, a single Poke Ball clutched in his hand. There was a spring in his step as he moved and the light wisps of his not-quite-humming under his breath. This was a day to mark for years to come, the day that he received his first Pokémon. He had a slight handicap, of course, but it was self-imposed and hardly enough to spoil his mood. He merely -
He was distracted from his thoughts by a rustling behind him in the brush. He hesitated midstep and glanced back, catching only a glimpse of white fur from the bushes. “Hello?” He blinked, unsure if he'd been mistaken. For a long moment there was no answer. He gave a small "hmph," and almost turned to walk off before a cream-colored head poked tentatively out, eyes wide. A Meowth.
He’d checked it for tags and tried questioning it, but if the Meowth had something to say about why it was on Route One, an area he was certain Meowths weren't native to, then it made no effort to communicate it to him. She seemed tame enough and was eager to accept food from him, but so far as he could tell she didn’t belong to anyone. Licking the food from her lips, she purred and arched her back against his leg.
“Did you come here with a human?” he tried once more, this time at least eliciting a stare from her large feline eyes. Finally she shook her head, yawning and curling up at his feet. A smile was suddenly on his lips and he kneeled to stroke her head. “Would you like to leave with a human?” Her ears perked up, curiosity piqued, and she tilted her head at him in question. “I’ll make sure you have food whenever you’re hungry,” he added, trying not to seem too excited by the prospect of gaining a new companion. He did very much need a Pokémon that could battle on land and he was quite fond of cats.
She seemed to consider for a moment before stretching and standing back up on all fours with a yawn. For a long moment they both simply stared before, with a coy tilt of her head, she started off down the path. He watched, unsure if he was being left behind, before she stopped and looked back expectantly. “Are you leading the way?” he asked with a chuckle. She gave a happy meow and with a grin Elliot caught up and let his new friend take the lead.

no colour-box-framey-things here, rightio! and i thought you should know that this is like the first time i've modded in a hundred billion years so i apologise for any rustiness or complete derping out, okay <3bouncing along the path, the sunkern was happy. it was a clear spring day, the sun was shining, the pidgey were singing, and she had just investigated a large and very exciting rock, finding nooks and crannies inside it and a smaller baby pebble beneath it. she had to leave the pebble behind though as much as she would have liked to keep it, because she had no opposable thumbs. she didn't even have hands, she only had little sprouts on top of her head. but that was not going to deter the stripy kernel from boldly going where no stripy kernel had gone before. < oh hey! > she said, looking up at a cat and a trainer. this looked like a spot of fun she could have, and besides, she wanted to know all about them. they looked so interesting, and it would be another tale to add to her arsenal. < hello! nice to meet you! you look mighty strong, > she said to the meowth, whistling through her teeth in awe. she did so very much like learning about new things and exploring, and having an encounter with someone so exciting as a trainer meant that she totally forgot about the interesting rock from earlier. this trainer was much more important! < how has your day been? have you had breakfast yet? i don't eat breakfast, i eat sunshine, isn't that cool! oh, does your cat eat fish? that's awesome! > she gushed, genuinely curious about her new friends. Route One struck Elliot as a very peaceful and relaxing place. Indeed, it wasn't long before one of the most adorable Sunkerns he'd ever seen hopped out right into their path and started chattering at them. It was all Elliot could do to keep from gushing himself. He was about to speak, but his Meowth beat him to it and seeing as the cat was actually capable of holding a conversation with the Grass type he allowed her to go first.
<Thanks,> the Meowth said, smiling at the newcomer. <Yes, actually! I was really hungry before, but the human gave me food. He said he's going to keep giving me food too,> she said proudly, as though she'd accomplished something significant by discovering and claiming the trainer.
"Hello, little guy," Elliot finally said when his Pokemon had finished. He couldn't understand the little friend, but he was very welcome to the idea of its company nonetheless. "Would you like to walk with us too? We're traveling through the route."

When are we going, and how does one actually finish whatever this route is called? she asked all at once suddenly without any thought given to it. Wanting to know everything and all the secrets of the route would be revealed to her then. The little sunkern could take in all this knowledge and would definintely remember it. Then the trainer asked her if she wanted to join and it seemed like a slight waste of her time almost. Well, if she didn't take risks then she would never get anywhere in life and then looked at the trainer in the eye as she seemed to be very seriously suddenly. I...WILL JOIN YOU! she said as she had paused, to rather dramatically eye him down before suddenly cheering by jumping up and down as fast as she could. The leaves on the sunkern bounced on her head with every bounce as she nodded to the traienr with the sway of her body rocking now as she hopped beside the trainers foot. Then she looked back to the other two pokemon for an answer to her previous questions. ::sunkern:: WILD SUNKERN level 06 • chlorophyll + solar power • female absorb, growth, mega drain curious, adventurous, smart

The Meowth tilted her head to the side at the questions. <I dunno, I guess,> she said, laughing a little. <I mean, we're going right now and I was heading back towards the city and I guess he was following me so far.> He had told her to lead the way, but when one walked along a path it wasn't so much leading as it was walking a bit ahead.
Elliot couldn't help but chuckle a little as the Sunkern began to enthusiastically hop up and down in answer. He almost started forward again before an idea came to him. A Meowth hardly seemed like a native, but a Sunkern was a different story. Perhaps the enthusiastic little friend would be willing to lead him to more Pokemon. "Hey, little guy," he said, trying for a gentle smile. "Would you happen to know where we could find some strong Pokemon? Or maybe something like a Natu or a Yanma?" He had been very excited when he'd found out that Yanma could sometimes be found on this route, but due to how uncommon they were he'd tried to keep from getting his hopes up. If they had a local to assist them, however, it might be a different story.

Hey, did you know my best friend growing up was a Yanma? Wait, how do you know that? Are you psychic? Oh man, you must be psychic! > She asked and asked, rattling on in her curious excitement. The yellow body started to hop off the path and down a "deerling"-trail. < He's probably down this way, he always hangs out over by the old oak. > And while the little creature was smart, after following her for long enough, you could tell she had a terrible sense of direction, because she was soooo small. < Um... this way! Elliot felt a surge of excitement when the little yellow and brown Pokemon gave such an enthusiastic answer and started leading him away. He had told himself time and time again that he had been building up this day to be much more exciting than it truly would be. Not only was it not a bit less amazing than he had imagined, but he had already found two new friends and was on his way to find one of his most desired Pokemon. His Meowth giggled a bit and trailed close after Elliot. This was turning out to be more fun than she had thought.

< yanma lives just along here! we're almost there! > the little sunkern chirped, giggling as she hopped forwards along a trail that apparently only she could see. humming, she came up to a little cavern under a big tree root and bounced merrily up and down, pointing with her leaves. < in there! i think a yanma lives in there. > a little bit curious as to why a flying bug would live in the dirt under a tree root, nevertheless she was sure she was right. and even if she wasn't then there would just be more adventuring to do to find one. suddenly, under the tree came a low growl and a rumbling sound and then out burst a grumpy-looking buizel. < who dares disturb my slumber? > he said, in a low, gravelly tone. squeaking in fear, the sunkern hopped quickly to hide behind elliot's legs. angrily, the buizel rubbed his eyes clear of sleep and sprayed water all over the assembled trio, hitting mostly the trainer's pants. < leave here now, before i get really angry, > he said, not really raising his voice but just sounding very irritated and annoyed. it looked like the buizel was preparing to attack if you don't abandon ship right away - but if you did that then the sunkern would lose the trail of the yanma she knows is around here somewhere. what are you going to do?

Level 10 Pickup & Technician Scratch, Growl, Bite, Fake Out Water Pulse It was more difficult keeping up with the tiny Pokemon than Elliot would have liked to admit. The Sunkern could ignore almost every obstacle that Elliot found himself tripping over or getting slapped in the face with and he surely would have been miserable if not for the promise of the Pokemon ahead. As he pushed a particularly stubborn branch out of his face he caught sight of the Sunkern excitedly bouncing around up ahead near a tree, his Meowth close behind her, and he felt his spirits rise. Had they arrived?
As he stepped out onto a clear spot, however, he could very much see that the creature before him was most definitely not a Yanma. The Sunkern bounced behind him and he frowned. "Excuse me," he started, intending to ask the Buizel to move aside peacefully. "Cou -" He was cut off and gave a yelp that was girlier than he would have liked as the grumpy Pokemon opened his mouth and doused his pants, the Sunkern, and the Meowth in water. The cat hissed as the liquid coated her skin.
Before Elliot's eyes could so much as flash in agitation the Meowth had already clapped her hands together in a Fake Out attack, the shockwave pulsing forward before the boy even knew what had happened.

just letting you know now ahead of time so you don't get confused, since the meowth is three levels above the buizel, you'll only gain 0.5 of a level for winning this battle. (:looking up at the trainer with a surly glare, the buizel heard the first part of his question that began with 'excuse me, could--' before he sprayed him with water and angrily answered, < no. > he was not in a good mood, he had been woken up from his nap and he was feeling very grumpy and irritated. happy creatures like that sunkern who seemed to think the grass was always greener and the glass was always half-full or whatever annoyed him to no end as well, since he was cynical. he felt a grim kind of satisfaction when the meowth hissed as the water hit it, but he was barely able to appreciate it for very long when he was suddenly hit by a shock wave that permeated his head and left him reeling. < wh-what was that? ugh, it's too early in the morning for this, > he grumbled, holding his head and shaking it from side to side. he couldn't think properly to use another attack, so he just sat there and held his head. this was like a hangover, but worse, since the bright sunlight and that sunkern's happy voice were the things stabbing his brain, not a fun night out with his mates. god he hated mornings. god he hated everything.

As the Buizel reeled, Elliot snapped to attention. It was unexpected and sudden, but it seemed the Meowth was in a Pokémon battle. He'd never formally asked it about its thoughts on battling for him per say and hadn't even taken the time to learn what moves it knew, but maybe... "Meowth!" he said, heart skipping a beat when its ears perked up. "Use Leer or Growl and follow up with a power attack!" He knew that a lot of low level Pokémon had one of those two, but he didn't know what offensive moves she was packing. Hopefully, if she was willing to listen he wouldn't simply confuse her.
She had been about to let the Buizel get off with that little warning, but... Well, if her human friend thought he needed the full package... Water still clung to her fur and she wasn't feeling all that friendly. She didn't quite get the Leer comment, but she knew Growl well enough. As for a power attack... She'd just go with her most tried and true. Growling as she moved, she dived at the Buizel with extended claws, intending to raze him with a Scratch attack. <Take this, you jerk!>

< Argh, > The Buizel groaned as another attack smacked him right in the face. This was his territoy, how DARE they come an intrude... especially so early. Why was the sun so bright? He growled loudly and let out a blast of water right at the Meowth. After all, he had heard cats hated water. Maybe that would get the dumb feline to leave him alone. < Go away! > He snapped, tail lashing as he used a little bit of his water gun to slick back his fur and nurse the scratch wound that had been inflicted on him. The Meowth was about to yell something triumphant after her attack connected, maybe even just a one-word battle cry, but she was abruptly cut off as a powerful stream of water surged at her and pushed her back. She stumbled on two legs before managing to fall forward onto four, eyes blazing with anger at the water that now soaked her to the skin. <You're gonna regret that!> she promised just as the human called out to her.
"Get it back with another Scratch," he said, knowing that a Normal type move like that on a Meowth packed a punch. She was fired up from the Water Gun and it clearly showed in her eyes as she rushed the Buizel once more.

No way was the Buizel going to let this cat keep scratching her up. With a feral hiss he leaped out of the way, digging his claws into a nearby tree and perching himself against the trunk with a disdainful look. If the water wouldn't work, maybe a loud sound would scare the kitten off. He slapped his tail against a tree and jumped off of it, before sending a large roar at the Meowth. The attack was so strong that you could see the compressed air waves flying through the air at the feline, ready to blast her eardrums.

The shockwave from Sonicboom might have been laughable to use between higher level Pokemon, but when both combatants were level ten it was devastating. The wave knocked the wide-eyed Meowth into the air and when she landed, she landed hard. Elliot winced. <Ah...> she groaned, a little wobbly when she got back to her feet. <You... Ah!> she cried out in pain, her small body throbbing in more places than she cared to count. Who could have known that the Buizel knew such a powerful attack?
"You can do it!" Elliot tried in a voice that wavered with uncertainty. If she got hit with another attack like that... They needed the battle to end quickly or... "Try again! And... be careful!" The Meowth nodded, hesitant and pained, before rushing in again, this time keeping on all fours so she could move faster. There was no way she could dodge in this condition. If she couldn't hit this time, it was the end.

That seemed to do just the trick. The water weasel's tail flicked as he landed on the ground, snorting. However, while he took that time to land and be all proud of himself for hitting his target so directly, it gave the Meowth a chance to strike. Biting on to his leg made him wince and try to shake off the opponent, getting irritated at the attacking cat. < Do you mind, fleabag! > He snapped, tails lashing back and forth. He tried to blast the cat back with a water gun, knowing that it was down to its last lives. Hopefully that would put it out for good... but the Buizel was hurting, and now he would be limping with his leg injured like that. If the cat could outspeed him, maybe there was a chance they could still win... The Sunkern was still watching the battle unfold, although there was a bit of... guilt in her eyes. The battle was sort of her fault, after all. Maybe she should help?

Her jaws clamped as hard as they could when she hit her mark, but it was no good. The point-blank Water Gun drove her into the ground and unconsciousness. With one final groan she passed out. "Meowth!" Elliot yelled, but to no avail. With a grimace he took out a Poke Ball, the irony of him officially containing the Meowth after it finished fighting for him not lost on him. "You did good, girl..." he said under his breath, throwing the orb and watching it engulf his friend. His eyes were hard as they met the Buizel again. He couldn't send out his Feebas in these conditions, so that left... "Sunkern!" he said, suddenly remembering the little Grass type. But would it work with him as easily as the Meowth had? There was only one way to find out and they had to be fast. "Quick, finish him off!"

The Sunkern's eyes went wide as the Buizel managed to knock out the Meowth with a decisive water gun attack, the ground now soaking wet. Still, she knew she could handle this-- and it WAS her fault that she had brought the trainer this way. She let out a strong Mega Drain at the Buizel, sucking away his health until he fainted, right before the other trainer's eyes. The water weasel fell to the ground, all his strength gone. All this effort, just to protect his territory... useless... He closed his eyes, defeated and weak from the battle. It would be a cinch to catch him now. The Sunkern looked up, her eyes bright, and offered, < maybe we should take a break now, let your Meowth heal... I just know for sure that we'll find that Yanma eventually... > At least, she hoped. The Sunkern heeded his commands and swiftly finished off the already weakened Buizel, much to Elliot's relief, and he was able to walk over and pick up his new Meowth's Poke Ball. He looked the fainted Buizel over critically. The aggressive creature had given him a lot of trouble, but he was in dire need of more Pokemon. He took out another Poke Ball with a sigh and pressed it to the Water type. Once he was done with this fellow, it was straight to the trading center.
"Thanks," he said to the Sunkern, grateful for its help. He couldn't understand what she was saying, so he ended up repeating some of it. "We can't continue until my Pokemon are feeling better or we might get jumped," he said, remembering how the Sunkern had hidden behind him and not wanting to rely on her to defend him. He sat back against a tree, eyes absently trailing skyward. "You don't mind waiting, do you?"

< Of course I can wait, > the little Sunkern said, especially since this spot was so sunny and warm. She settled down into the grass and let the sun wash over her, enjoying the strength it gave her. Plus, it was tasty! Mm, sunlight. The Pokeball shook and shook, but finally clicked shut as the Buizel gave in. He wasn't going to be very happy when he woke up, that was for sure. ~~ After a bit of resting, thankfully without being attacked by any wild Pokemon, the trainer found that his Meowth was feeling a little better. She wouldn't be in tip top shape since she hadn't been to a Pokémon Center, but she could certainly travel and potion would most definitely help her feel better. The Sunkern was lightly snoozing now, having fallen asleep from the cozy warmth of the sun.
