Marlaey wandered through the park cradling her new Pokémon egg and wondering what it could be. Her growlithe, Harper, was trotting alongside her, sniffing around the path. She smiled at him and watched as he caught an interesting scent deciding to chase after it. Harper ran a good length in front of her before barking and returning with a completely ordinary rock. He was very fond of rocks strangely enough.. The piece of charcoal attached to his collar wavered as he bounded around his trainer, excited to be outside and wanting to play. But Marlaey was concerned for her new egg, she didn't want it to get damaged while she was jumping about with Harper! He needed some company, that was all, then he'd leave her in peace to wait for the egg to hatch. Maybe she should release one of her other Pokémon? Or maybe she'd meet someone here who might be willing to entertain him for the time being. She smiled, wondering if she'd make another friend or bump into someone she'd met before.
Harper cocked his head at her, wondering what she was thinking about for a minute and then promptly licked his foot to get a good taste.

It was a nice day for a walk, which Tristan took advantage of. He seemed quite calm and focused, as recent events have put quite a shock through his system. He went into deep thought about how he was going to approach things such as training, pokemon, and effort. But even so, he would rather relax and lay back, letting the wind carry through and help him improve. However, with recent losses to certain trainers and taking two tries against the gym leaders, he questioned whether he improved or not. The park seemed like a good place to think, with wide open space to lie down and let the wander. Perhaps he needed another person to talk to, and make some friends.
As he walked, he kept his head high, his face up in the clouds. Without much attention he accidentally bumped into someone, a girl with an egg. With a quick gasp, he stepped back and inspected the damage. "Oh geez, I'm so sorry about that. I didn't mean to bump into you. Hope you're okay." This was certainly a moment of annoyance, as he just wanted to relax and think. Then again, meeting someone like this could prove beneficial. He took a look at her, to fin that she had an egg. He approached, placing a hand on the egg. "Oh hey. I see you have an egg." That didn't seem creepy. |

Harper had been over near the trees sniffing at some new daffodils when a young man bumped into Marlaey. She hadn't been looking where she was going so she could hardly blame the other person! But her first concern was to her egg. Checking it over quickly she looked up smiling at the young man before her, "Not your fault, I wasn't watching where I was going either! I was checking where my growlithe had gone off to!" Frowning slightly, she looked a little closer at the stranger. Had they met before? He seemed very familiar.
Then he mentioned her egg and she was brought back to the present. "Oh! Yes! My father sent it to me, though I'm not really sure what's inside. He got it from another breeder friend of his so he didn't know either! Guess I'll find out when it hatches." Harper came running back to her side at that moment, sniffing at the new person, making sure he didn't smell too dangerous. Once the fire pup was satisfied, he sat back and expected to be given a pet for a job well done. Marlaey laughed at him, ruffling his fur before turning to the young man again, "I'm Marlaey by the way!"

He didn't particularly pay attention to girl and her explanation, as opposed to just listening to her words. Most of his attention was turned to the egg, reminding him of his goal to be a breeder. It was weird that he considered himself a good breeder, but the fact that he hasn't done much made him doubt a little about his own goals. He only sighed, shaking it off as he crossed his hands and place them behind his head, leaning his head a back. Man, the whole breeding thing is kind of a hassle. I'm a pretty good breeder....but am I good enough? He said, his sight turned away from the egg long enough to get caught off guard by a young growlithe. He stepped back a little, his eyes wide open as he looked at the young fire hound, a little shocked. He sighed again, his attention turned back at this woman, who introduced herself as Marlaey. "Oh hey, uh...I'm Tristan. So....a gift from your dad? That's cool..."
After recovering from the shock Marlaey's growlithe gave him, he gave a small smile and knelt down. He reached into his backpack, reaching out a small piece of chocolate (left over from valentine's), offering it to the Pokémon. "Hope you like chocolate." He said. "So, uh...what brings you to the park?" He asked Marlaey. May as well start a conversation, now that he was here right? |

"Nice to meet you Tristan, this is Harper by the way", she said pointing to the growlithe, who wagged his tail in confirmation. Marlaey nodded, "Yep, my dad is a well known breeder back in Kanto. That's where I got my growlithe too!" She noticed how interested he was in her egg and she smiled. "This will be another egg I can add to the list I've hatched", she said proudly, thinking that perhaps one day she could be as good as her father even if her main goal was to be a trainer.
Harper wagged his tail fervently at the mention of a treat, especially chocolate! His mouth watered just looking at it. He looked to Marlaey, checking if it was ok with her to take the yum, and then carefully licked it out of Tritan's hand. The cutenes of the heart was lost on the fire pup, but the sweetness of the chocolate was not!
"To the park? Oh we were just out for a wander. Harper loves running about so I thought I'd give him the chance. That and I was hoping this egg would hatch soon, and it might be nicer for it to hatch outside in the fresh air rather than cooped up in the trainer's lounge with the smell of battle..." She paused a moment before asking, "What about you?"

When Marlaey spoke of his father as a breeder, it made him question his own goals of being a top breeder. He wondered how he did with his own pokemon, wondering how he raised them and what affects did it have on them. Is he a good breeder? Shouldn't he be with the research he had done before hand? Thoughts of comparing himself to Marlaey's father began to rise, causing him to pout in his own disappointment. Nonchalantly, Tristan pet the young growlithe before standing back up. "Another egg, huh? Well that's pretty cool. I've hatched a few eggs myself." He said, feeling the urge to make his credentials known. He wasn't sure why he did that to Marlaey, but perhaps it was for his own benefit?
"As for me, I just came here to think about a few things. Not much, just letting my mind wander. Not really much else." He said, walking towards the grass and sitting down upon it. He liked the relaxing feel it provided. He didn't really care what Marlaey did. Maybe she'll follow along or something. Who knows. "Well that's cool. What do you hope the egg will be?" He asked, wondering if she was still there. Even so, he found a nearby stick and waved it at Harper, wondering if it would catch his eye. |

Marlaey smiled at how happy Tristan had just made her growlithe. This, if nothing else, proved to her that he was a good trainer. But she couldn't understand what made him pout for just a moment there. Perhaps it was something she'd said? He stood up, saying that he too had hatched some eggs of his own and she smiled at him again. "You have? That's cool! I don't know very many people who've done that. What pokemon did you hatch?", she asked curiously. she followed him over to the grass to sit down, hoping to talk further with him. "This egg?" she asked, holding it up, "I've no idea! It could be anything! I really don't mind what it will be, I love baby pokemon so I know I'll fall in love with it anyway."
Harper wasn't too interested in the conversation going on, he was snuffling through some bushes before deciding to join the pair of trainers. When he did he saw Tristan waving a stick around and he immediately wagged his tail, crouching down and barked. Play!!!

It really bothered his mind, as he did not really know what else to say or do about it, except go one. Perhaps the answer will come to him along the journey. But still.....was he really accomplishing his goals? Once again, he groaned as he looked back at Marlaey, who was asking him questions about the eggs he had hatched. Was it really important? "Oh uh.......hmm...well, I did hatch a vullaby egg, I remember. I don't even remember the first one since it was...well, weird. Haha." He sent out the little Vullaby, who was asleep in her pokeball the whole time. She laid there, resting on the grass next to Tristan.
Tristan looked back at Harper, who wanted to play after all. He threw the stick a distance away, watching as Harper reacted. |

Marlaey could see that something was troubling Tritan, but she didn't know him well enough to feel comfortable asking about it. She hoped she hadn't said anything wrong though. Maybe he'd had a bad experience breeding some pokemon? She decided to be more considerate in her conversation skills and let him take the lead if he wanted to. Stretching out her legs she enjoyed the little bit of sun that was out, glad it wasn't too cold today. She kept the egg in her lap as Tristan told her about his vullaby and released it. The baby bird was fast asleep and Marlaey couldn't help but gasp, "Aww... She's gorgeous! Does she have a name?"
Harper meanwhile was eyeing the stick in Tristan's hand, not letting it out of his sight. He yipped and barked for the trainer's attention. Play!! When Tristan finally through the stick, Harper made a mad dash in the direction it soared. He disappeared from view for a moment as he scrambled around in the bushes. A few minutes later he returned triumphantly with a rock and placed it in front of Tristan, covered in saliva. Marlaey just laughed.

When the pooch returned, he was greeted by the return of a.....rock? He smiled, petting Harper for his achievement. "Well....at least you know how to play." He said, picking up the saliva covered rock. He was at first disgusted, but he nevertheless waved it in front of Harper to try and get a reaction. He then threw it some distance, not as hard as the stick, but enough to send it a good distance.
Tristan had a sort of soft spot for Pokémon like that, to enjoy life without strict control. Kind of like his home at the dojo or something. He had images of his father training him, but he still managed to find happiness when he was with his brothers. The brothers he wanted to surpass. Deep in thought, he didn't realize that Marlaey asked a question until later. "Uh oh.....no, I haven't given her a name. No real point if she can't listen." He looked down at the little Vullaby, petting it as she slept. She was definitely not a Pokémon to get along with that easily, especially at this stage. He wondered if he acted like the vullaby in front of his dad: rebellious and whatnot. Again, he groaned something, questions still in his head. UGH, this was seriously annoying. These questions are really a hindrance, why should he worry so much about it. He started to show visible signs of annoyance as he turned to Marlaey. Again, he just sighed. "Honestly, this vullaby hasn't been obeying me much. Man. Maybe you can help me out." |

Harper yipped and wagged his tail energetically as Tristan teased him with the rock, waving it around. He was eager to catch it, eager to play. He barked impatiently but he was still thoroughly enjoying himself. Just when he least expected it, Triston threw the rock and Harper tripped over his own feet in his haste to race after it.
Marlaey watched as he ran into the distance and spent the next while with his nose to the ground searching for the rock. She laughed to herself, pride and love filling her. She could never imagine life without Harper! She smiled at Tristan, noticing that he had lost himself in some thoughts for a moment. She understood that feeling all too well. She nodded and then frowned, thinking on the question he had posed. "Perhaps if she had a name she would feel more comfortable around you? What's her personality like anyway?"

He hasn't had much under his name, which was kind of annoying. And yet, this other trainer, Marlaey, had eggs and a breeder for a father. What was he to her? He sighed again, returning to reality after some thought about his whole thing, returning to Harper making a fool out of himself again. He laughed again, enjoying the sight of the growlithe playing.
Tristan turned back to Marlaey, who was asking questions about his vullaby. The disobedient vullaby that never showed him any appreciation from the instance she hatched. "A name? You have any idea how ridiculous that sounds? Really." He said, still noting how the vullaby pecked him and just wanted to rest in his hood. Just then, the vullaby woke up, looking around to see what was happening. "Oh uh....hey there. Guess you finally woke up." He said, waving his finger at it. Before long, she gave it a bite, causing Tristan to yelp in pain before putting it in his mouth. |

Marlaey smiled warmly at Tristan, "I know it sounds silly, but if you show a little love towards her, no matter how she treats you, then perhaps you can win her over. And the first step is to give her a good name! That way you're proving to her that you won't abandon her, that you care bout her." Her father taught her many things and she always tried to pass on his knowledge or the knowledge she gained from her own experiences.
Next thing she knew the vullaby had opened her eyes and was finally awake. Marlaey watched as the little bird bit Tristan's finger and she couldn't help laughing a little. "She's feisty alright! Maybe I could introduce her to my turtwig? Little Foot is quite the tomboy and enjoys battling a lot. It's how she gets any excess energy or anger out of her system."
Just then, Harper loped back to the trainer pair and yipped at the sight of the baby vullaby awake. He had forgotten about the stone he was meant to bring back with him, instead he was covered in sticky seeds from several plants. Marlaey called him over after he'd licked Tristan's face and began to clean his coat by taking off the unwanted seeds.

He felt as though the vullaby never truly mixed with him. He wondered why the bird never really mixed, which really ticked him off. "Dangit, you littl-" He said, his anger apparent. He reached out to the vullaby, causing her to cry in fear, causing Tristan to reel back in surprise. What was he supposed to do now? He tried picking her up, bouncing her on top of his knee. "e-e-easy now. Its okay, don't worry." but it didn't really work, as the vullaby kept crying.
Tristan groaned again, questioning how he was supposed to do this. He had little issue with the other pokemon he had hatched. So why this one all of a sudden? He barely had an issue with raising pokemon, save Shina the sandslash. He wondered if he can actually be a good breeder, questioning his skill as he tried to raise this baby pokemon. Soon, he looked back at Marlaey, who was talking about giving her a name and affection. He thought he already did give her affection, but a name? Something about Marlaey made him angry. Before he knew it, he faced the trainer. "Dammit, that idea sounds stupid, you know that?! You said so yourself. I gave it it affection, so what more does it need?! Maybe you should show me how YOU do it, great breeder?!" He said, lashing out to Marlaey all of a sudden. His disappointment in himself was enough, but to hear something like this from another breeder made him angry, apparent as his usual demeanor was replaced with an angry one. His laid back attitude was shattered by a sudden burst of anger. The vullaby kept crying, but it was silenced as Tristan put her down. The vullaby still cried, unsure of what was happening.
"I-I'm sorry.....I didn't mean to do that. Its just.....ugh." He said, rubbing his face as he realized what he just did. He wanted to keep the vullaby, that's for sure, and raise it somehow. But the way he lost his patience made him wonder why and how. He looked down at the vullaby, who stopped crying to look back at him. Another hassle was created and it was his fault, so now he had to deal with it. What a mess. |

Marlaey could see that Tristan was very frustrated with the vullaby and to her that meant he was creating a tension between himself and his Pokémon so the little bird couldn't relax properly. He had to get rid of his fear of failure and his anger. But who was she to tell him what to do? She could only advise the way her father had done. Whether Tristan decided to stick with it was his own decision. She watched as he attempted to calm the vullaby, pleased by this until he suddenly erupted in anger.
Harper growled low, his hackles raised.
Marlaey laid a hand on his back, understanding how she might appear like a know-it-all right now to Tristan. She sat calmly as he raged at her, resisting the urge to get upset. "Patience is a virtue you know", she said quietly. How could he expect to win the vullaby over in a few short minutes? Caring for Pokémon took time and effort, surely he knew that? "Babies need constant comfort and security. A few minutes of affection isn't going to do it. Repetition and continuity is the key. Giving her a name will tighten the bond between you both, it's not a stupid idea. And I'm not a great breeder, just a regular trainer." REaching for the vullaby she picked the baby up and held it in her arms. She wouldn't be surprised if the little bird attacked her or continued to cry, but it wouldn't matter.
"Do you want her?" she asked genuinely. If he didn't then there was no point in trying to reinforce a connection that wasn't there in the first place. He had to care for her and she had to feel it too.

It was really unintentional and he did not mean for that to happen. Yet, he did it? He kept asking himself why he did that, as he was used to accepting help from his brothers. Oh the times he would be thrown, then picked up by the two older brothers he had. Maybe that's why he didn't like accepting help now. Perhaps he had considered himself a grown trainer, someone that had grown based on the research and the club activities he attended at school. Maybe that's why he was angry.
He looked back at Marlaey and, in turn, Harper. He was a bit saddened to see Harper angry at him. The work he put in to get Harper to trust him. What a hassle. "Yes, but I had the vullaby for days now. Days since she hatched. Never had she stayed calm with me. That's the difference between your advice and reality." Tristan watched as Marlaey picked up the vullaby, jealous to see the vullaby only curious by the female trainer. The bird looked calm when she looked at the new trainer, unsure of whether to cry or not. Tristan groaned, laying back as he went into thought. "See. That bird makes no connection with me. No matter what I do. Ugh.....and I wanted to be a breeder when I can't even do this. Fucking a.....what a hassle." He said, rubbing the back of his head.
He turned back to Marlaey, who asked him the question about the vullaby. He did not know what to say. "Well, ya. I guess I do. Its a nice bird, that's for sure." |

Harper was very wary and watchful now. He kept looking at Tristan and then back to his trainer, wondering whether he should be more or less fierce now. From Marlaey's tone and body language he deduced that the situation wasn't threatening any more so he could relax a little. Settling down once more he kept flicking his eyes between them, just to make sure.
Marlaey thought for a moment, moving her own egg between herself and Harper to keep it warm. She cradled the vullaby, rocking her slowly and looked to Tristan, "Well a few days isn't that long.. Was there any trauma around her hatching? She could just be an insecure Pokémon that needs extra care and attention? To be honest, I don't really know, but if you're willing to work with her then I'm sure it will be all right. Does she get on with any of your other Pokémon?" If one of Tristan's other Pokémon could keep the vullaby calm perhaps he would have an easier job communicating with her.
"She's not a hassle if you really want her, and you said you do, so be willing to be there for her regardless of how hard it is."

Instead, he tried to extend his hand out to see if he would trust him again. He sighed to himself, using his free hand to rub his head, really unsure of what to say to himself. He could not take care of a baby like this vullaby, yet the vullaby was as calm as ever with Marlaey. He felt as though his dream was getting harder and harder to reach. Something about his brothers being in his mind made it feel much harder.
"No, there was no trouble. She's just really temperamental. I'm not even sure what to say. So much for my breeder dream." He said to Marlaey in response. He looked back at her, listening to her as she, a new trainer, was explaining a few things to him. Her advice was sound, definitely. "Well....she hasn't really been with my other pokemon, really...." He looked back at the vullaby, unsure of she wanted to stay with him or not. He wondered if accepting help like this was permissable. "Well I do know one pokemon who may help." He said, reaching for his pokeball. He then released Tones, the machop. The fighting type looked around before spotting Marlaey. <Oh my, what LOVELY hair. And such a cute baby~> He said, giving the trainer a few strokes on her hair. Suddenly, he began to play with the baby vullaby, the later of which was giggling.
"Tones, this is my newly hatched pokemon.....I'm just having issues with her." <I'll say. You look so uncouth like that.> As much as the insult hurt Tristan, Tones was kind of right. He did get the job done, at least. "Well, I guess that solved the problem..." |

Harper raised his head when Tristan reached out a hand towards him. He sensed the fear in the young man, but also his remorse. Harper wasn't one to hold grudges, he much preferred forgiving those who wanted to make peace. So he crawled forward, quite comically, and licked Tristan's hand, wagging his tail. The egg at his side shuffled slightly and he nuzzled it before turning back to the other trainer.
Marlaey continued rocking the vullaby as she listened to Tristan, "I think this little girl will really help you with your breeder dream," she said with a genuine smile, "She'll be a learning curve for you." When Tristan released his machop, Marlaey distinctly heard the fighting type compliment her hair which made her feel good on more than one level. Her connection with pokemon was growing stronger! She could now understand their speech almost perfectly! She felt such pride within herself. The only drawback so far was that she hadn't heard any of her own pokemon speak to her yet, she just kept hearing snatches of other pokemon's words. she smiled as the machop stroked her hair and then began to play with the baby vullaby.
"Well those two seem to be getting along very well!" she said, laughing.

At least the damage wasn't permanent. The experience with Harper reminded him of his time with the fighting types at his dojo. How often times he would get in a struggle with them when they didn't agree. Harper's energy reminded him of the fighting types. He gave Harper a quick pat on the head, rubbing and messing up his coat.
He then turned back at Marlaey, still a little unsure of the vullaby. On one hand, this vullaby will be a major hassle, as he barely had any pokemon completely disagree with him. He barely even recalls any of the fighting types who recently hatched, as they were usually taken by another person. On the other hand, it could prove to be a good experience, as Marlaey said. "Well...I suppose so. But....agh, that could be a major annoyance...not that taking care of something I want is a hassle, anyway." Tristan said, a look of concern on his face. Was he supposed to go through with this?
Tony, meanwhile, was playing with the young vullaby, the latter of whom was enjoy her time. She liked this Tony character. Tony, meanwhile, was being as gentle as possible with her: hard to believe since Tony is full of muscle. <Oh you little one. Come here! You wanna go on a ride?> He said, lifting the vullaby up and pretending that they were flying. Vullaby laughed, liking every bit.
"Huh. I guess they do get along." |
