"I feel like an idiot."
A man, age 21, walked past the lab with his hands in the pockets of his dark, worn out jeans. His eyes, which were a charming light blue, narrowed at the sight of the lab and especially at seeing the young folks there for their first pokemon. Chances are not one of them was over 20. Heck, there probably wasn't one over 16 there, which is why Nathan quickened his pace and made his way right past. He wanted to start his Pokemon journey, but he was several years late and not planning on going in with a bunch of kids who made his late start even more obvious and even embarrassing. Not today, kiddies.
Glancing around, Nate was pleased to see that the path to the tall grass was void of people. Good. I'll only have to talk to a ranger. A quick smile crossed his lips, but it was gone just as quickly as it had come. The name 'tall grass' never ceased to be at least somewhat amusing. What a creative name. He chuckled inwardly, then shook the thought away. Now it was time to get his Pokemon.
Slowing to a stop at the edge of the grass, he once again looked around. Feeling impatient, he brought a hand out of his pocket to rub it thought his hair while looking at the ground and praying that no one would come by but the ranger. He wanted to get in, get the pokemon, and get out as quickly and painlessly as possible. Not that he wasn't excited. He had always wanted a pokemon, but he had always hoped he wouldn't start so late. Stuffing his hand back into his pocket and shifting his feet around a little, he waited.
Better late than never, I guess.

The tall grass rustled, ominously. It was indeed, as the name stated, tall. And it was grass. Obviously. But anyway, that was beside the point. The point was that the tall grass was rustling. Not the blatantly obvious noisy rustling of a hulking, hungry Snorlax, but ominous rustling. Rustle was really the best onomatopoiaic word to describe it. It was more of a... Shhhhhhhrachachacha... But as soon as it had started, it ended, and a small cream head emerged from the grass, shortly followed by a slender brown striped body and long tail. It was a Linoone. And it looked pretty pissed. Resting it's hinquarters on the ground and sitting up, it barked loudly. No sooner had it done this, a rather eccentric looking man exploded from the 'tall grass'. He had a red face, and a ranger uniform that was miles too big for him. His facial features looked so... Jovial. So much that it might make you want to punch something. Namely him. "Ah, hullo." He started, hitching up his trousers and adjusting his cap. "The usual ranger's off sick! I'm filling in!" He looked positively ecstatic at this. "But the Linoone doesn't seem to like me too much..." Sure enough, the cream coloured Pokémon was busy attemting to maim his left boot, to no avail. "Anyway, I suppose your here for a Pokémon. I don't see why else you'd be here!" He chuckled.

Raising a single eyebrow in curiosity but stepping away cautiously from the rustling grass. It wasn't really safe to be so close to so many wild pokemon, was it? That's why they had a ranger. Not that Nate was really worried about being attacket, but more worried about anyone seeing him here getting attacked. Suddenly, a Pokemon popped out of the grass. "...hey" Awkwardly, he brought his hand from his pocket and waved at the critter. He was even able to smile. It was kinda cute.
"Ah, hullo."
While he had been distracted by the Linoone a ranger seemed to have just sprung from the ground just like the grass. Somewhat startled, Nate was able to mumble a "Oh hello" before the ranger started to talk again.
It didn't take long for the cheery ranger to start stomping all over Nate's nerves. This man was taking cheerful to a whole new world. Bitting his lip and clentching his fist, Nathan was somehow able to remain silent and calm. He actually chuckled a little at the sight of the small Pokemon attacking the ranger's foot. Poor critter, stuck with this loser. Looking on the bright side, this dude didn't seem to be very surprised by Nate's age. That was good.
"Yeah. I didn't come to chat." He said, forcing a smile and another chuckle. He said it sarcasticly, but he meant it. He doubted that the man would get the hint: shut up and give me a pokemon. But oh well.

The Ranger grinned, "Of course your not here to chat. I'll be off to get your Pokemon now, so stay there." He pointed to the ground quickly, before turning around and fanishing, the Linoone chasing behind him.
After a few moments the Ranger appeard again, with a Pokeball in his right hand and a Starter pack in his left.
"Alright, you got yourself a Male Nidoran, and this fine Starter Pack." He grinned, reaching his arms out so the New Trainer could take them.

Nate looked after the ranger as he vanished in the grass. Wow. Maybe he did get the hint. Shrugging, he tossed the thought aside and just waited silently for the ranger's return. The excitement was building up, especially since he had absolutely no idea what Pokémon would come back to him. It was worth being excited about, right? Either way he didn't do much to show it, other than moving from foot to foot impatiently.
Not long after he left, the ranger returned with arms full of goodies. Smiling, Nate walked over and took the things from the Ranger. Nidoran? That sounded great. Nate had heard of them before, and liked their looks. "Thanks" he said, earnestly.
Then, getting his things together and holding the pokeball that contained his new Nidoran tightly in his right hand, he turned to go. As a last minute thought, after he had already taken several steps, he turned back and threw up his hand at the cheery ranger one last time. Bye!
Turning again to the path ahead of him, he grinned down at his new pokeball. Never had he felt so dorky. Never had he felt so alive.
(omg I love Nidoransss. 8DDDD)
