--Not Quite Working Out the Way I Expected--
Okay, so things hadn't turned out so well for her in the end after all. On top of getting mooched off her backpack early early in the morning by some kick-happy kid with no mannerisms whatsoever and being driven from the option of going to the Lab due to her own rage and frustration after the incident, Windra had found herself going to the Tall Patch of Grass (true name, honestly). There had been nothing bad about the encounter afterwards. It was short, sweet, and to the point. But she rather enjoyed being at that little niche in the middle of nowhere - a comfortable oasis filled with life of all sorts and all shapes. Perhaps she would go there again someday, if only to drop by and say, "Hello."
On top of taking in the sun and the glory of the world in the middle of the morning, Windra had achieved another goal - she received her first Pokémon. Though it lacked the grandeur posed by the Laboratory, it was far more ... charming ... to start off this way. And she wasn't at all displeased. She never would be when it came to these remarkable creatures. Once she was out of earshot of the Patch of Grass, Windra had set down her items and released the captured creature from its confines. Lo and behold, there stood a Drowzee in all his glory. No wonder they were mistaken fro tapirs so often. The resemblance was uncanny in the nose and fuzz, but all similarities ended there. This guy stood on hind legs, and the upper half of his torso, arms included, was bare of fur - exposed yellow skin glistened in the sun. Deciding that fresh air was a charm, Windra made the decision to keep the guy out of his Pokéball. And it didn't take long for the newly named Narcissus to warm up to his new trainer. Perhaps it had something to do with, because he was apparently too tired to walk, Windra carried him on her shoulders.
The search for a backpack had been largely unsuccessful. While there might have been a shop somewhere in town, it was evidently nowhere close. So Windra caught sight of a plastic bag drifting on the soft winds from the south and grabbed onto it, using that as a sack until she could find something better. Afterwards, she'd stopped for a small bite to eat and was on her merry way.
There was something golden about the first step onto an alien route. This place was unfamiliar to her, possibly dangerous ... but it still filled her girth with elation and excitement, along with the tiny amount of dread that always follows somebody around when starting on something never done before. A deep breath filled her lungs and, casting a parting glance at the town that had so far been only partially friendly to her (for the woman's ribs still stung with bruises), she set off into the unknown. The plastic bag was wrapped about one arm and her baseball bat was clasped in the other. Narcissus was lounging on her shoulders, leaning forth so that his chin rested atop her skull. Her must have fallen asleep, for his breathing was steady and pocket marked by loud snorts.
"Bum," Windra whispered to herself, grinning slightly.

Two eyes were watching Windra and Narcissus as the two walked on the path through Route one. They belong to a small grey and black wolf Pokemon, Poochyena. A hungry Poochyena, it's fur was dulled and it fangs were yellowed from it's sickly condition. It hadn't eaten in a while since it had been poisoned by a weedle. It followed the pair for a ways waiting for it chance to attack. It was staggering but stubbornly kept going.

+ -- The duo continued their small journey for a while longer before finally planting themselves along the side of the route. Well, one of them planted herself on the side of the route, while the other dozed off, contentedly burrowing his long-nosed face into her hair. Entertaining herself with the thought that Narcissus was being intoxicated by the scent of her own brown plumage, the fae plopped onto the ground, dropping the bag and the bat on either side of her. Fingers tenderly wrapped around the circular belly of the sleeping Drowzee, who groaned as he was lifted from his perch and placed on a patch of grass beside his trainer. Eyes flickered briefly before slamming shut again. Narcissus wobbled a few times before rolling onto his side. The large mouth unhinged with a muffled snore and a tiny dribble of drool dripped from the corner of the monstrous maw. Windra sighed, rubbing her own eyes and then scratching the cheek of her sleeping partner. "Out like a light, eh?" she purred, smiling to herself. "Spent all night partying with those wild Hypno again, I suppose. Didn't anybody tell you not to drink while hypnotizing?" Well aware that she was talking to herself, Windra rolled her eyes to the sky. It was gorgeous out here. Bright sun ... blue skies ( Talkin' 'bout blue skieees) ... a multitude of birds feathering across the atmos, displaying their colors of rainbow hue for the world to see. Looking back to the horizon from whence they came, she realized they'd traveled far in a short period of time. The old town of crabs was but a speck in the distance now. Good riddance, she thought bitterly. Grumbling to herself, she pitched onto her back and sprawled out like a corpse. A dazed expression overcame her face and she reveled in the natural comfort of warm air and minute breezes ... She would wait until Narcissus woke up before moving on. -- EDIT: Forgot the bag and bat. -- +

The Poochyena looked at the two as they took a rest stop, he was getting very hungry and his stomach wasgrowling rather loudly. So, he decided to attack,he rushed out of the bushes into the clearing. growling and showing his oversizzed fangs. He was ready to eat, NOW.
But, as fate would have it the sickly Pokemon tripped over a rock, sending it flying head over paws. It landed in front of Windra, very embarassed but he regained his composure standing back up and growling at the trainer, pretend as if it hadn't happend. He was still weak and now dizzy from the tumble he had just taken. His fur was puffed out making him seem larger.

Okay ... it was warm. Nice and warm. Breezy and warm. The kind of warm that made Windra want to close her eyes against better knowledge that she would probably zonk out if she did so. After all, she didn't get much sleep in the last few days, and the catnap this morning had been, for all its glorification, only an hour and a half. She was whipped and every muscle that pulled when she went to move screamed in protest. Tough cookies, she snarled to herself, willing her body to quit its whining. I'm not gonna close my eyes. Not gonna sleep. That's be a baaaad idea to do something like that on a probably well traveled route. Nonetheless, Narcissus' snores sounded reassuring. They seemed to pull her in, and for all her fighting gusto, Windra's eyelids began to feel like lead weights ...
Until the growl.
Hazel orbs snapped open. Something in the periphery of her vision was moving about. A gray object. She turned to face it and was met with a mouth brimming with very sharp, very hungry looking yellowed teeth.
"Eep?" she whispered to herself. A hand stretched out to gently rock the snoozing Drowzee. "Wake up, guy. We got company."
The only response she got was a loud snort, some mutterings, and a Pokémon flipping to its other side before letting fatigue grab onto its consciousness again.
"Some help you are," mumbled the fae as she groped the bat and dragged it closer. Alrighty ... if this thing wanted to make a meal out of them, it would have to get through thirty inches of aluminum first!
Poochy boy jumped and Windra tensed. But the lupine fell short thanks to a rock. It went flying into the dirt in front of Windra, plumes of dust kicking up into the air, temporarily blocking her vision. By this time Windra had the bat in front of her face to act as a guard, but her eyes were narrowed and fixed on the canine in such a way that they looked to be examining. What the hell? Did the pooch stumble? Why? And come to think of it, why would a Poochyena, a nocturnal creature, be out in this blaring daylight? Somebody forgot about time zones ...
Poochyena was back on its feet with growls and snarls. The act of puffing out his gray and black fur made him seem larger. Windra, dancing on the border of fighting back or holding firm, dared to make communication witht eh creature. If it udnerstood her ...
"Are you sick?" It was a simple question, but she would much rather choose to make harmony with this guy instead of getting either one of them killed. "Or hurt?" Thick baseball bet stood steady in front of her face.

The poochyena was suprised to see that, even if the girl pokemon wasn't helping, the trainer had a way to defend itself. If it wasn't so hungry, it would have turned tail and ran, as most of his species would. But he stood firm ignoring the human's attempt to speak to him. He was hungry and hurt, but too proud to admit it. He took at step back still growling at Windra but not attacking. He needed a new plan and fast. Unluckily, his weak and hungry brain refused to work and he stood there, waiting for a chance to come up so her could get some food and keep his dignity.

The thought that Windra's bat would surprise anybody was a bit of a puzzler to her. Clearly the Poochyena shrunk back a little when it saw the weapon. Perhaps it hadn't seen it before ... or maybe - and Windra let a rumble of amusement croak in her throat - maybe nobody brought means of self-protection with them other than their Pokémon? That was probably it. Judging from her little encounter back in town, the people around these parts didn't seem to take into consideration that the worst possible things could happen at any given time. At least that's what she believed to be pertaining to the Lab habitation lurking on the horizon behind her. Who knew how other citizens in other villages thought?
Poochyena stepped back. If Windra was flippant about the notion of this guy being hurt, she was sure of it now. His walk was somewhat hobbled - firm, yes, but still uneasy. And yet it was here in all its weakness growling at her? Either he was very persistent, very hungry, or very proud. She vouched for all three and her loose hand immediately flew to the plastic bag beside her. Hadn't she grabbed some kind of snack on the way out of town? A bite to it, yes - and the bagel melt had been ten shades of yum - but there was something for the trip as well.
Narcissus stirred momentarily. Vibrant eyes creaked open to blankly stare at the sky until he growling noise encroached upon his ears. The tapir-based creature sat up slowly, using his forearms to support his upper torso while he gazed on at a wild Poochyena. There was a blank look marring his expressionless face. When had this guy shown up, and why was he growling? "Drow?" he thrummed, vocals low and slow. "Zee? Dz?" Narcissus was more or less asking why Poochyena was growling, but whether or not the wild canine was listening ...
Never taking her hazel orbs off the quivering for of the mini-lupine, Windra's free hanf found what she was looking for. It was not much, to be sure, but it was something. A small plastic contained was pulled from the bag which crinkled upon its leaving. From within the container came a scent that was bound to make the wild Pokémon slaver and drool. The same shop Windra got her breakfast at had also been selling dried, lightly salted meats. She'd grabbed about ten of them on the way out. Shaking the container caused the foodstuffs to rattle within.
"Food?" she proposed slowly, while Narcissus looked on at the exchange. "Not as good as raw meat, but delicious nonetheless?" Feigning fear, she dared to lower her baseball bat to the ground while peeling back the lid. Windra held the plastic dish out to him, tilting it on an angle so that Poochyena could see the objects inside. "You can have it, if you'd like ... "

The Poochyena snarled back in response to the Drowzee's humble questioning. Even on an empty stomach, it had lost most of its patience and wisdom. The poor pup could barely think, the least it could do was focus in on what it wanted. And right now, it wanted food, and total silence before it got a headache.
"Pooch! Grrrryena grrrr..." It snapped at the Drowzee, before another spell of weakness overcame it. This time falling to the ground as its eyes rolled back into its head, laying limply on the ground for a good couple of seconds. Only stirring at the scent of food that Windra had been waving in front of it.
Within moments it had come to some sort of agreement with itself. No growling, in order to save energy, and no running. So while laying on its belly, it crawled over to the salted foods and started chewing on it. It didn't even matter how it tasted: It was an omnivore, it would eat anything. Its huge fangs that stuck out of its mouth naturally had no problem in tearing the meal apart.
It wasn't much, possibly only a snack to hold it over until it found some decent prey that would actually run when it barked. Prey that wouldn't fight back, like this one human girl. It had some respect for her, but it wouldn't dare say that out loud.
'I-I'll just say this never happened.' The Poochyena thought it itself as it finished the last of its meal. Licking the salt off of its lips with satisfaction.

"Well ... that was ... ," Windra tilted the plastic 'plate'/container towards herself and rattled the crumbs that were left behind, " ... odd. Looks like you and I are gonna be doing some foraging later, Narc." She threw a glance at the Drowzee, who wobbled his head a little bit in acceptance of their current dilemma. Still, Windra would be lying if she said she wasn't worried about the Poochyena that ran off. She didn't think it was simply hungry when it fell around like that. Sick? Swallowing back the thoughts, she hoped the guy would be alright.
With a sigh, Windra flopped the lid back onto the container and shoved it into the plastic bag. She stood with a mighty stretch and yawn. Her steel-toed sneaker kicked the bat by accident and it was sent rolling into the clearing, so she went after it. Windra caught it halfway and scooped it up, resting it on her right shoulder for the umpteenth time. Walking back to where her partner-in-crime was, she noticed that had was finally standing on his stubby little legs. But as soon as she drew near he rose his arms into the air. Fingers were pointed to Windra, twitching inwardly in so that it mocked the physical expression of 'give me' often seen in infants.
"What?" Windra asked. Narcissus did a little bounce and the fae was quick to catch on. "You want me to carry you again?" A fervent nod from her yellow-and-brown comrade-in-arms. Well ... with his small legs, it would be impossible for him to keep up with Windra's pace ... She bent down and allowed the critter to climb onto her back as he'd done before. "I'm spoiling you," she joked, chortling somewhat. Windra wasn't sure if the Drowzee laughed, but his belly did a strange purr. Was that his equivalent?
With a mighty shrug of her shoulders, Windra went on her merry way. They were still a long way from the next town, and she suspected that her misadventures on Route 1 was far from over ...

The Poocyena watched as the trainer and her Pokémon continued around the path of Route One. <Thank you!> The Poochyena barked before running away into a new bush. As Windra and Narcissus continued along the path a small flower Pokémon could be seen water a bed of brillant colored flowers. <Bud dew dew!> The Flower Bud Pokémon hummed happily as she continued to water the flowers with her Water Sport!Wild Pokémon Appeared!

Poochyena's barking show of gratitude was not completely lost. The duo were well ont heir way now and the distance between them was far, but the yip was carried along the wind, reaching their ears int the form of a mere whisper. By the time Windra and Narcissus turned to wave farewell to the creature that devoured their lunch and dinner, the canine was gone. He left nothing in his wake - not even a paw print in the dirt. Perhaps he'd lost stealth due to sickness and hunger, but once his gullet was full, that thing was quick on his toes. And nimble. It was admirable.
Sighing and casting aside the thought that she would have liked to take the wolf pup Pokémon to a Center or something for treatment, Windra walked along the path of roses ... somewhat literally. The route of grass and trees transformed to include flowers of varying sorts. And while there were no roses, there was a colorful variety of tulips and lilies to take their place. The scent lingering in the air was aromatic and transfixing. Zed found herself swaggering a bit to take in the pleasant aromas, despite the fact that they made her sneeze.
"Joy. Allergies," she mumbled, trying to ignore the urge to rub her suddenly itchy eyes. Inwardly she wondered how long it would be before she erupted into a sneezing fit. Long enough. Hopefully ...
"Zee!" her comrade erupted from her shoulders. A slight change in the atmosphere gave off the hint that Narcissus had moved slightly. The shadow of his arm appeared on her right, so obviously he was pointing at something. "Droowww zee!" Guy's voice was slurring a bit. Windra followed his gaze and her eyes rested upon ... a rose bud? Except it was walking. And talking.
"Oooh, it's cute!" she chimed. Rummage rummage went the plastic bag until Windra found the Pokédex, which was promptly flipped open. The moment its sensors found the joyous motion of the wild creature, it burst into a monochromatic speech.
"Budew, the Bud Pokémon. Pre-evolution of Roselia. It lives alongside clear ponds." Ponds? Windra would have to scope around to find some water then. They would need a drink soon with this heat ... "Over the winter, it closes its bud and endures the cold. In spring, the bud opens and releases pollen. It scatters pollen that induces harsh sneezing and runny noses."
"Better keep a distance then," Windra whispered while flicking the Dex shut. She slid it back into the bag and lowered Narcissus, who was suddenly restless, to the ground. "Don't scare the little guy ... or girl," she told her partner with a wide grin.
Drowzee hobbled off to the largest flower bed where Budew was watering. Somewhat in awe, his brown eyes studied the floral beast. With an air of finality he suddenly sauntered towards the closest patch of flowers and took a whiff. When he held back his head it was with an exalted, gleeful sigh.
"You're growing some beautiful flowers," Windra said gently, crouching beside a bunch which she specifically admired. Calla Lilies, typically seen at weddings and, more frequently, funerals. Gorgeous ... She glanced to Narcissus. "How 'bout it, Narcissus? Wanna go find a body of water or something?"
The Drowzee nodded with enthusiasm, clapping his stubby little paws to declare affirmation. "Drrrr!"
Focusing on Budew now, she said in the most gentle voice possible (to avoid startling it), "You wouldn't happen to know of a pond or lake around here, would you ... ?"

The Budew jumped at the sound of Windra's voice, curse not paying attention. "Bud, Dew, Budew, Bud, Bud?" <Are you going to hurt me?> the little bud asked in a scared vioced, not having fond memories of humans. Little kids used to attck her with stick, thinking she was a cute little pinta. Oh the pain. The Budew scooted back a bit and watched what thiss trainer was going to do, not trusting anything or anyone.

So much for throwing off a gentle disposition. The Budew shirked backwards. At first Windra thought the little dude was injured or something, but upon closer inspection she realized that its eyes were wide and was it stepping back? Yegods, the thing was either petrified or very distrustful. And the way it chattered reeked of nervous tension. She wondered what was going on. Perhaps it was simply cautious of everything? Eager to give it needed space, Windra scooted back a bit herself. Maybe it would relax when given breathing room ...
"Bud, Dew," it was saying. It appeared to be shaking out of fear now, though Windra could not be sure thanks to the feet separating them. "Budew, Bud, Bud?"
Windra grimaced. Oh how she wished she were capable of translating Pokéspeech on a whim. "I'm sorry," she whispered, "But I can't unders - "
"Drow!" Narcissus jumped in front of her. Facing Windra, it pumped its arms up and down in the air, desperate to relay some sort of message. "Zeedr, Drooww zedrz row!"
Okay, so she could make out a little of that. Just the word 'hurt' and 'me'. After all, she hadn't known Narc for that long at all, and her ability to decipher his speech was rocky at best. But she was able to get the general message.
"Buh?" She was genuinely surprised. Glancing back at Budew there was a hint of sorrow in her eyes. Hurt her? Why would she hurt her? "Do me a favor, Narc? Tell her that I'm not gonna hurt her? I wouldn't dream of such a thing." Watching her comrade turn and speak, she added, "No way I'd harm anything. Just looking for directions ... "

The Budew listened to the Drowzee, she nodded and with one last water sport that got Windra with a little sprinkling of water she walked through the flowers toward her pond-side home. She had seen that dumb Poochyena who had seemed a lot happier so she couldn't be all that bad. She was singing in her own language, about the flowers and Spring in general. <Ta-da!> The Budew said proudly as the group came upon a small pond pond, it was almost just a puddle that never disappeared. <What happened to the poochyena?> She asked curiously to the Drowzee, hoping the he would know.

"Oh hey now!" Windra exclaimed when the water hit her face. She burst into light-hearted laughter, ending with a grin that almost split her face in two. This gradually softened into a smile as the Budew led them towards what could have been called a pond if it wasn't so small. Bowing her head in gratitude, Windra uttered a soft, "Thank you," and headed towards the edge.
Hands dove once again into the plastic bag, procuring a water bottle fashioned into the shape of a canteen with a flat bottom so that it could be sat down. Unscrewing it, she dunked the object into the water and allowed the water to flow inside. Windra's ears picked up on Pokémon speech, but since she could not understand it, she made it into background noise - comforting, because the chitter was gentle and non-intimidating.
<The Poochyena?> Narcissus repeated, the translation falling fine upon his ears though it would have sounded like, "Droww zee drow?" to his owner. The rounded hypnosis Pokémon shrugged his stocky shoulders, fur ruffling a little in the breeze caressing their bodies. <He was hungry. Sick too, we think. Windra gave him food.> He rubbed the tip of this nose. It suddenly began to itch. <He bolted after that ... Wait ... > Questioning eyes turned to Budew. <You were there?>
Back at the pond, Windra leaned back. The bottle was filled and she proceeded to screw the top back on. She shook it a few times and placed it back into the bag.

<I saw him running through here.> she squeaked happily. <He's too proud to except help from anyone so it's nice that he has some food.> She was waddling around into the puddle-pond thing and laughing. Sunndenly she stopped. <You're not going to try and capture me are you?> She asked worriedly. She didn't like battleing at needed to stay here to take care of her flowers. she bolted into her little cattail hiding spot and peeked out.

Narcissus bobbed his head up and down in a gleeful manner. He seemed ecstatic, as if all this giddiness and cheeriness and laughter was a natural high for him. Wobbling after Budew towards the pond, he was eager to join up with his Trainer, plopping down by her side with a yawn. For all that walking, one would imagine that he'd shaken off the call of sleep by now. But it still hung over his head like a long-lasting cloud bursting with thunderclaps. <Even the proud have to eat sometime,> he told the wild baby Pokémon with a sage-like nod.
Windra was in a crouch, getting ready to stand when the Budew uttered something and ran to a bush. Now that was odd. Weren't they over the general fear from before? "What'd I do?" she asked, sounding like a kid who'd been scorned. Casually, she lifted an arm and sniffed at the pit. "Do I smell that bad?"
Narcissus snorted and translated for her as best as possible. Windra was able to make out a few words and, from those, formulated what was going on quite accurately. She shrugged her shoulders and lifted the plastic bag up, swinging it in a small circle at knee-level.
"Catch you?" she asked Budew with a nervous frown. Windra shook her head. "Naww ... " Now she was on her feet, poking the baseball bat still lying prone on the ground with the tip of her sneaker. "To be honest, I'm not into the aspect of battling and training and capturing. I don't believe in pitting living being against living being. It's kind of inhumane, don't you think?" A sigh exhumed from her maw. She rubbed her forehead. "Kind of makes you wonder why I became a Trainer ... "

The budew reluctantly emerged. She was still shaking. <Promise?> she squeaked as she looked directly at Windra, absolutely terrified. She missed her Papa and Her Sister a lot, they had been captured and her Mama had gone missing. She was alone, and it was scary to her.

There was a thought. Young kids thought Pokémon Training was such a great thing. They could go all around the world while fighting others for a title of victory. Money, prizes, and badged could be claimed. Eventually they might even be able to make it to the League and claim the name as Master. Along the way, they'd meet friends, have adventures ... Those were some good sides, Windra supposed. But in front of her stood evidence that everything was not peaches and cream. The Budew was shaking, fearful - a testament to what Training meant to those who were Trained.
Had she more courage, Windra would have swept the little one into a hug. But she was not a brave person when it came to displaying inner thoughts or empathy, so she merely nodded her head. "Death claim me if I should lie," she told the Budew, and drew a hand across her chest cavity. The heart beneath throbbed with power and strength of its own accord.
Perking suddenly, Narcissus blinked at Budew and lowered his head. The question he posed came with a vocal like silk. Smooth and soft to the touch: < Are you alone here? > Genuine concern laced its way through verbs and pronouns..

The timid Budew, crept out of her little hiding spot and scanned the trainer once again. She /seemed/ trustworthy, but then again her mom had thought that the trainer that gave her food was trustworthy. The frightened young grass pokemon, took a few steps backwards as if deciding whether to run away or risk staying here a little longer for conversation.
"Death claim me if I should lie"
She seemed trust worthy, and the Budew was pretty sure the girl didn't want to die, after having an inner battle with herself, where she took a few steps forward and then a few back. Finally, the Budew steeled its resolve and tripped up to the huge trainer. Straining to look up at all 5 feet 6 inches of her, the Budew was brave enough to shyly ask the girl something. <C-could you perhaps get shorter? I can't see you.> the four inch tall Pokémon complained. Suddenly becoming curious at the large piece of wood clasped in the trainers hand, she scurried over to it, it was a baseball bat but she had no idea what it was. What's /that/?> the Budew questioned prodding the wood carefully, she was becoming a little more at ease with the girl. She hadn't done anything bad... yet.
< Are you alone here? >
The tiny Budew glanced up at the ugly yellow and brown pokemon, before adverting her gaze. Her mother had always told her it was not polite to stare. Budew trembled slightly, memories of her family flooding her. After a short pause, the Budew finally nodded her head weakly, tears threatening to overflow. The small Pokémon didn't want to seem like a baby though, so all her energy was focused on closing up her tear ducts. <Yes...> she added once more, before the dam burst. The once peaceful Pokémon was now sniffling as tears poured out. The Budew felt bad for crying like this when the Drowzee had been so kind. <I'm- I'm fine.> she muttered, before they could say anything, turning her back to them so she could compose herself.
