August shambled down the path lazily, sweating in the hot sun. His name month, August, was the hottest month of the year, and most people avoided being outside for too long during the hottest hours. But August was on his pokemon journey, and this meant alot of work and some hot, sweaty hours. But he didn't mind that much. He was still enthusiastic over getting his first pokemon.
He glanced over to look at this pokemon. Sniffing along the edges of the grassy path was a small mudkip. He was curious and playful, pawing at rocks and flowers and enjoying the sunshine. August grinned and hoisted his pack a little higher. "Quirk, we'll stop in that shady spot up there for a rest, ok?" he asked, and pointed to a close copse of trees that provided a large patch of shade on the open route.
The mudkip didn't bother to respond, but instead dashed ahead, tail wagging back and forth. August laughed and raced after his pokemon. "No fair! Wait up!" he laughed, sweating even more as he hurried for the inviting shade.

The heat was turned up. The summer was slowly turning into autumn, but the temperatures were still above a comfy level. Even the shade casted by trees and other large objects were warm. But anything was paradise if it wasn't as hot as the outside.
Under the inviting shade was a blue elephant, so small, relaxed underneath. It's small trunk snored lightly as it slept, but it was obviously very hot. The phanpy was relaxed, undisturbed before hearing voices. Regular voices from around the area. Humans and their companion pokemon. But as the baby phanpy arose, it saw a mudkip running toward it with a fast speed, and a boy trailing behind it. In response, the pokemon stood up fast and squealed for them to stop, not to trample over him. 'Please! Stop!' It snorted in a high pitched squeal.

August skidded to a halt, dust flying up behind him. Quirk did the same, and then walked a little closer, until he was only a few feet away. August approached and knelt down. The phanpy was little, clearly young. "Wow, a phanpy." he said, impressed. The pokemon was obviously a bit stressed at the their approach, and August hastened to calm it. "Easy. We won't hurt you." he said, forgetting that his first instinct had been to battle it. Quirk nodded, agreeing with his trainer, though he found the small pokemon rather pathetic.

They young Phanpy was still rather scared. It guessed that this was one of the Pokemon trainers his parents had told him about. He racked his brains for what he knew about trainers and a cold chill went through him as he remembered. They fought and captured Pokemon.
Phanpy backed away nervously. It tried to look fierce but ended up pretty cute. You wouldn't hurt such a cute, young Pokemon.

August was thinking along similar lines. He was a trainer now, and he would never build up a team if he didn't catch some pokemon. This would, naturally, require him to find and catch said pokemon. And here was one, right in front of him. The ground type, he knew, would be indispensable in the first gym. He sighed. He really didn't want to hurt the phanpy, but he was a trainer. He needed to build his team. He looked to Quirk, and nodded slowly. "Get ready Quirk! Sorry, little guy, but I am a trainer." he commanded, and stepped back several paces.
The mudkip had been itching to battle, and readily got into a fighting stance. He waited for the first command, and was rewarded when August's voice directed him. "Tackle!" Quirk surged forward, aiming right for the scared phanpy.

The Phanpy let out a timid squeak, at the trainer's words. Why didn't he run away while he had had the chance? Now he was subjected to a battle he would probably lose horribly at. The ground Pokémon backed away from the trainer, eyes wide in terror. <Apology NOT accepted, you just lied to me!> he snapped at the trainer, his stubborness shining through his fear. He was a bit startled when the Mudkip acually dove at him with a Tackle, he hadn't expected the Pokémon to acually attack him! Fear flooded in for a few moments as the water type dove at him. It hit, driving him back a few paces.
<You know what?> he said, fear fading away quickly. If they wanted a battle, he would give them one! <You just made me grumpy.>
The sky blue Pokémon paused for a moment, an dark ball surrounding him as he performed an Defense Curl. Once the dark ball of protection was gone the Phanpy charged at the Mudkip, returning the other pokemon's favor with an Tackle.

August felt a small twinge of guilt at the Phanpy's words, but shrugged the feeling away. He was only doing his job, and if he caught the pokemon, he would treat it well. Quirk, meanwhile was grinning at the success of his first attack when he was bowled off his feet by the phanpy's tackle. He squeaked in protest and got up quickly. It had hurt a bit more than he'd thought it would.
August mentally cursed. Not only had he let the attack hit his pokemon, but now the phanpy's defenses had been raised. It would be harder to take him down now. "Quirk, growl at it! Then use Ice Ball!" he ordered. Quirk nodded and growled loudly at the phanpy, intimidating him and trying to lower those high defenses. Then the blue Pokémon mustered his strength and formed a ball of ice, which was aimed and fired at the phanpy.

Phanpy only stared at the Mudkip as it let out a cute growl attack, not even noticing that the attack would lower his defense power. <Is that all you have?> The Phanpy asked still studying Quirk carefully, but he soon felt that his surrounding was starting to feel a little cooler, could that mean that the Mudkip was about to use an ice type attack?
<Phan!> The long nose pokemon squeaked as the piece of ice fired into his direction, soon knocking his back a little, the attack seemed to have been very effect. <I'm not going to give up that easily!> He shouted, now charging at Quirk with another Tackle attack!

August watched as Quirk was hit by another tackle attack, this one causing the small mudkip to squeal in pain. But Quirk wasn't down and out yet. "Another Ice Ball!" August ordered. <Me either! You're going down!'> Quirk countered before forming a ball of polished, hard ice. He aimed and fired, putting as much power into the attack as he could muster.

The Phanpy glared stubbornly at the Mudkip, did it think it could acually beat him? He would soon settle that! <Well! You can try, but I'm going to win!> he called, blowing a raspberry at the water pokemon.
Honestly, they were like little siblings bickering.
The Phanpy let out a strangled sound as the large chunk of ice charged at him with the speed of a train. Well, it felt like that at least. This attack caused him to skid across the ground, but he soon got up and charged at the Mudkip once again, using the momentum from the ice ball attack to make the Tackle stronger.

August was learning now. "Dodge it, Quirk! Then tackle!" he said quickly. Having been so ordered, Quirk dashed away at the last second. He too was getting the hang of battling. He dashed forward, aiming the tackle at the Phanpy. <Don't count on it!> he countered as he approached at full speed.

<Argh! Enough talking! More battling!> The Phanpy shouted, shaking his trunk up into the air while trumpeting in a battle cry. He was forced to skid around to a stop as soon as he could, trying to turn his entire body around just to see what the Mudkup’s next move would be. Already the water type was running at him with a Tackle attack, and managed to give him a nice little bruise on the side.
Yet the Phanpy was still able to hold his ground, and was more than persistent in making a lasting mark on the Mudkip. When he said that he was going to win, he meant it. Mimicing the actions of his older and more battle ready siblings, his body began to violently rampage around the Mudkip with hid Flail attack. Since he was losing more energy with every attack he made, the attack was making him more eager to call up whatever energy he had left to knock out the Mudkip. If the water type was caught off guard, then this attack would surely do more damage than usual.
