5....4....3....2...1....
Weak sunlight filtered through the branches of the broad oak. The strong rays of the afternoon sun beamed down and reflected partially off of a mass of crimson red hair, elegantly spiked and mussed.
Thick black boots, crossed over one another, encased faded gray jeans. The jeans were worn with a black T-shirt and a navy jacket, and fingerless black gloves. These gloves wiped the sleep from the redhead's eyes.
A napping Conor woke up, startled by the light and by the time of day. He had stopped at this tree to rest at dawn and now it was late afternoon...not good. He had stopped by the lab earlier to check out the starter Pokemon, but he just didn't connect with any of them. Personal connection was a big thing for Conor. For as passionate a person as him, who regarded training so highly in his daily life, a personal connection with a Pokemon was important. And he just didn't get it.
He stood up, brushing the grass and dust off of himself. Still slightly dazed, he looked around for a ranger to help him.
"...hello?"

Hand on his bushy head, a man arose from his daze up in the treetops. His almond shaped eyes popped right up at the click of a mouse, turning around to try and find the source of the sound. It had to of been a human's voice; he hadn't met a single Pokemon that could talk, and Pokemorphs were fairly rare these days. From his flimsy branch, he struggled to roll the other way without falling out. At the very first sight of Connor, he grinned. It was time to go to work.
"Hello down there." He called, expecting a startled reaction from the younger male. Inwardly he chuckled, if he was only a couple years younger, he would've been very attractive. Mmmm...Nothing could beat the sight of a young boy out in the wilderness. Of course, he'd never say that out loud. What kind of first impression would that be?

And the ranger was right. Conor was startled out of his wits, leaping up about four feet in the air away from the tree. He jumped as high as a Sproink, ready to fight or flee if necessary. He then looked straight up.
"Oh..."
He saw the odd man perched upon a branch up high in the tree. He looked like a ranger from first glance, and so he assumed that he could trust him. After all, there wouldn't be a molester or anything hiding in this neck of the woods.
He brushed some leaves out of his locks and peered up at the ranger, squinting through the last remnants of sunshine.
"You're a ranger, right? Can you help me find a Pokemon?"

The man laughed from the branches, clearly amused with the younger male's reaction. Swinging his legs from the branch as he shifted to a sitting position, he grinned broadly down at him as if his face was the sun itself. He had already guessed what he was here for. Pokemon. It was to be expected, since no one ever came here for him.
"Right...I'll be down in a sec." He climbed down several branches until he felt secure enough to leap to the ground. He nodded in Connor's direction, before rushing off into the tall grass. When he returned, he had a Pokeball and a Starter Pack in his hands. "Have fun, kiddo." He waved and walked off.

The man was gone. He felt a little relieved and grateful at the same time. He appreciated the ranger going out of his way to help him. Conor had always done everything by himself; not by choice, but by life's will. Maybe now things would start to change.
Conor nodded slowly as he released the Pokémon and saw the Shellos. He had never seen it before, but it looked unique and would serve his purpose. He looked into its big, watery eyes.
"Shell! Shell!"
A faint trickle of a smile came across his face, and then was gone. He took the Shellos in his arms and walked off into the setting sun.
