The grass was wet as Talis stepped into Route 1. It was almost a total transformation from 100% dry to 100% wet, so his foot got lodged in a muddy puddle for a second before it came out, dripping with wet dirt, or worse, Pokepoop.
Smearing the worst of it on the grass, Talis walked on. At least the sun was shining... Maybe Oberon would appreciate this wet part of route one. He was a water type after all.
Enlarging the Pokeball, Talis pushed the button at its center and watched it open with a tiny click, releasing the Mudkip stored in a flash of white light, which quickly formed into the Water Pokémon.
Talis smiled at it in what he hoped was the comforting, friendly way of a good Pokémon owner, and walked on at a slower pace to allow it to catch up. It was snuffling at the grass and staring longingly at the little rivers that flowed through the area.
Although Oberon was a good Pokemon, he hoped to catch a few wild ones out here for the battle in the Electric Gym. Oberon was at a type disadvantage, so he'd need to be careful with what he chose. He didn't want to capture another water Pokémon just yet. A ground type would be nice, as would a Normal type, because they would specialize in nothing, but have no weaknesses.
But it was all in the hands of Fate what he ended up with. And he was watching keenly, waiting to see his first wild Pokémon.

Upon seeing the little blue creature pop out of the Pokeball, a passerby's Keen Eyes lit up with excitement at the little guy's figure. Why, this was just the partner he had been looking for all of this time! With a swoop of his small, feathered wings, the Spearow landed with a rough skid in front of the Mudkip, nearly crashing into it.
<Y-you...you're perfect!> He exclaimed, placing both of his wings against the Mudkip's soft shoulders, not even caring if they got a little wet in the process. <Please tell me you can sing! Why, with those looks...you've gotta have some good pipes.> The Spearow pleaded with eyes full of childish excitement. His tail feathers wiggled like a dog's tail, simply unable to hide his contentment.

Oberon blinked calmly as he saw the Spearow almost crashed into him and sniffed the feathered flying type Pokémon. Talis, on the other hand, was more than a little shocked by the Pokemon's sudden appearance, and decided to keep still to allow Oberon and the newcomer to talk, which the Spearow seemed eager to do. Circling the Spearow with a typical Mudkip's friendly smile, Oberon was slightly surprised at the Spearow's compliment, and let out a surprised, yet satisfied squeak of pleasure. When he asked him to sing, his smile became smug. Oberon opened his mouth, and unleashed a barrage of questionable musical notes. If they weren't sharp, they were flat. And if they weren't flat, it wasn't music at all, but a sort of... screeching, for lack of a better term. After he was done, Oberon looked at the visiting Spearow. <Am I good or what?>

The Spearow listened to the Mudkips questionable musical talent and nearly fainted with delight. Why, this sound...the texture of the Mudkip's voice! All of it was so original and unique, that even he was envious of Oberon's special voice. Right there and then, this tone deaf Pokemon decided to make this Pokemon his partner. Even the Mudkip's personality was likable, so what wasn't to like?
<You are a singing...god! Honest! I knew I was right the moment I saw you! That's it, you can't stop me now. As of today, I am your manager!> He declared, happily patting the Mudkip on the back. His feathers might have given the Mudkip a ticklish sensation as he brushed against his skin, but it was unintentional.
<This...this human, is it? Is he your lawyer? Should I go over the paper work with him?> He asked, and he quickly flapped up to Talis's shoulder, giving him a serious look. <You. Papers. Let me sign them.> He demanded, looking very impatient.

Oberon happily jutted his nose into the air, eyes closed, smiling, looking thoroughly pleased with himself. He looked up at Talis with a series of cries that translated loosely into <You need to take him with you>
Talis saw what his Mudkip was saying, but it was undeniable when the Spearow tickled Oberon with his feathers, making him emit cries of mirth. The Spearow too, looked very satisfied with itself and Oberon.
Talis gasped and almost fell as the Spearow hopped onto his shoulder, regarding him with shiny black eyes. As he reached out to touch its soft, chestnut brown feathers, he realized that it wasn't going to run away, and Talis got the feeling that Spearow wanted to go with him.
Reaching into his backpack and pulling out one of the three Pokeballs Dexter had given him, he lightly tapped it on the birds beak, watching it turn into bright scarlet light, becoming formless as it was sucked into the Pokeball.
Talis placed it on the ground and waited for the Spearow to either break out or stay. He didn't want to hold it close to him in case it broke out, resulting in the Pokeball opening on his nose.
Oberon watched too, head cocked inquisitively to see whether the Pokemon was happy to make the white and red sphere its new home.

The Spearow didn't really know what to think of being in teh pokeball. All he'd wanted was the lovely Mudkip's papers! However, as he thought it over more, this might really be for the best. He would constantly be around his new rising star and he'd follow him everywhere! It was more brilliant than he could have imagined. The trainer, likewise, must be brilliant, to have thought this far in advance.

Talis lifted the Pokeball up as the tremors stopped and looked at Oberon, who beamed, still satisfied with the compliments to his singing voice, and began to trot on. Without time to revel in his capture, Talis followed him.
He slipped the Pokeball into his belt as they walked on, Talis keeping an eye out for potholes and puddles, Oberon walking happily through them, a new spring in his step. Pokemon were so easily contented, and even though Talis had no idea WHAT had made Oberon so happy, he knew that it was happy, and that was enough for him. He just hoped it got a little drier soon.
Ten minutes later, Talis was about halfway through Route 1. He wanted to catch two or three more Pokemon before he left, so he kept his eyes on the grasslands, puddles and rivers around him, watching for the slightest sign of life. Another Pokemon couldn't be far away...

It was true that there were a lot of puddles nearby, suggesting the habitat of a water type Pokemon, but many of the native Pokemon enjoyed taking a nice, refreshing drink there. One of the Pokemon was a small Pidgey, pecking away at the droplets of water by scooping them up into the air and swallowing them whole. Ruffling his soft feathers in the water for his daily bath, another Pokemon that came for a quick sip got sprinkled completely with the water drops.
<Hey, watch it.> The Rattata growled, obviously not pleased that her deep, purple fur had been tainted with the bird's 'dirty water'. As if to show her protest, she stood defiantly in front of the Pidgey, demanding an apology.
<What of it? I was here first.> The Pidgey replied, not particularly caring for the Rattata's attitude. He didn't really feel like scuffling with any Pokemon out of anger like this, as it tended to ruin his daily rituals.

Talis heard the cries of two different Pokemon ahead, and Oberon scampered ahead to check, curious by the little chirps of what sounded like indignation.
He saw a Rattata ahead, facing a Pidgey, its lustrous purple fur damp with water and looking extremely pissed. Talis soon caught up with his Pokemon and the two exchanged a glance as the Pidgey retorted to whatever the Rattata had said.
From what Oberon could make out, the two squabbling Pokemon were arguing over the puddle of water near them. To try to illustrate this, Oberon swiped his hands through another puddle of water, which promptly sent a cold shower straight into the boy's face. As his hair dripped with moisture, water droplets falling off the end of his nose, he gasped in shock at the sudden frigid torrent, and glared at Oberon.
The Mudkip wasn't quite sure what it had done wrong. The fact that his Trainer might not like water was beyond him. Who didn't like water? It was perfect for swimming, attacking, swimming, drinking, swimming.... And swimming!
Talis shook his head, unable to restrain a smile at the Oberon's innocent, uncomprehending look. "Go and see what's wrong." he said, a little nervous at commanding the Pokemon, but it obeyed easily enough, hopping over to the Pidgey and Rattata.
<There's enough water here for everyone>" remarked Oberon. <There's no use in fighting over it.>

The two Pokemon were so intent on their disagreement that they didn't notice the Mudkip's approach until it was practically upon them, and insisting that there was enough water to go around. Rattata was clearly not pleased with his decision to play peace-keeper, considering he obviously had no clue what had been going on in the first place, given his choice of words. <We weren't arguing over the water!> she insisted, twitching her whiskers in frustration. She could feel the droplets of water seeping into her beautiful purple coat! <I was only trying to get a drink, when this ignorant bird decided to soak me with his filthy droplets!> The rat Pokemon was adamant that she was in the right, despite the fact that there were probably a few better ways to handle the situation.
Pidgey, however, still a little displeased with the interruption of his washing, cast an apathetic glance toward the interfering Mudkip. <I was only taking a bath,> he insisted. <Besides, I got here first. It's not my fault she didn't look where she was going.> He hopped away a few paces, intending to continue his washing in another one of the puddles, before the Mudkip could retaliate and back the Rattata up.
The purple-furred rat, however, would not have it. <I demand an apology!> she insisted. <I wasn't here for a bath, and certainly not one aided by your dirty contamination!> Her small body tensed with anger. The nerve of this Pokemon, acting as if he'd done nothing wrong!

Oberon sniffed, displeased by the squabbling, and stared at the puddle the two Pokemon were near, focussing on it with all the strength his mind could manage, imagining what he wanted to happen next.
The puddle began to spin, the surface of the small body of water distorting and rippling as droplets of water began to spray the Pidgey, the Rattata, Overon... and Talis, who spluttered as he was splashed in the face by filthy water for the second time in as many minutes.
<You wild Pokemon are too stubborn"> remarked Oberon, as the weak Whirlpool finished. <You two are weirder than that Spearow back there. I'm sure that it was just a nasty accident>"

When the Water Pokemon used it's Whirlpool to soak them both even further, the two wild Pokemon reacted in drastically different ways. The Pidgey simply flexed his wings and shook out his feathers, not really caring about the extra droplets of water that had soaked him. He continued to hop slightly in the other direction, toward a tasteful looking puddle that would likely fit the needs for the rest of his bathing. He didn't need to deal with this.
The Rattata, however, was infuriated. Her whiskers quivered in anger as she whipped around to face the Mudkip, eyes blazing. <How dare you!> she snapped at Oberon, narrowing her eyes dangerously. <What... why...> But she was too engulfed by the desire to scratch it's eyes out for soaking her even further with the dirty water that she didn't seem to be able to finish forming the sentence.
<Nasty accident?> she repeated sarcastically. <And I suppose soaking me again was a nasty accident as well?> She'd show that stupid blue thing a lesson. Baring her teeth in a threatening manner, the Rattata faced the Mudkip with an angry glare. <I'll show you a nasty accident!>

Talis flinched as he saw the Rattata glare at Oberon. Before it had looked pissed. Now it looked absolutely furious. And that fury was 100% directed at Oberon. Talis looked at his Mudkip with an uncertain expression on his face. "Oberon... What have you done now?" he asked, not sure of what to do next.
When the rat Pokemon bared its fangs, Talis knew he was in for a fight, and nerves gripped him like a tight vice, making it hard to breathe. His first battle, with Oberon as his partner. Even though it was a wild Pokemon he was battling, he wanted to have memories of victory in this fight. Taking a deep breath in an attempt to dispel the fear he felt, he smiled shakily at Oberon and spoke.
Alright, Oberon. Start with a Growl attack. Try to lower its guard. Then follow it up with a Tackle attack." Talis was surprised at how easily the words came to his mouth. His earlier fear almost totally evaporated. It was just Talis, Oberon and Rattata. Nothing else to interfere.
Hackles raised and cheerful smile gone, Oberon's fur stood up as his eyebrows crossed in focus, and his top lip rose slightly, showing its shiny pointed teeth. A deep, throaty growl sounded from Oberon's throat, and his black, round eyes focussed coldly on the Rattata as he charged, immediately on the offensive, a burning desire to win enhancing instinct and reflexes in his tiny blue body.

Seeing that she knew what to expect from the attacks, thanks to the trainers helpful clues, Rattata was confident that her guard was not going to be lowered. However, she also hadn't expected such a sound to emanate from her opponent, and so it still succeeded in putting her off for a bit as she tried to wrap her mind around it. This gave Oberon more than enough chance to land the successful Tackle, which knocked her back a foot or two, sending her sprawling in the mud. The disgusting filth smeared across her glorious purple coat, staining it muddy brown, and her fury became even greater.
The nerve!
To counter, she turned around and wagged her tail in the direction of the Mudkip, hoping to lower it's defense to make up for her loss of attack. Then, turning around, she quickly launched herself toward the Water Pokemon in what looked almost like a tackle, but at double the speed. Let the stupid thing choke on that one! How dare he soak her fur in water and mud?!

Oberon was almost hypnotized by the motions of the Rattata's resplendant purple tail. It was very distracting, and for a brief moment, Oberon felt the will to battle fade inside his mind. "Oberon?"] Talis asked, sounding a little panicked. "Oberon, look out! Dodge that Rattata!" But it was much too late for that, and the incredibly fast Rattata struck him in the chest. With a cry of pain, Oberon was thrown back, performing a backflip in the air before landing painfully on his side. "Are you OK?" Talis asked frantically. Oberon, eyes pinched with pain, forced himself shakily to his feet, then looked at Talis and nodded, before facing the Ratatta again. "Good. Use Tackle again!"Shaking his head, Oberon charged toward the Rattata again, determined to win this fight. Oberon used Tackle!::MODCOIN::

The Rattata hissed in fury as the Mudkip slammed into her with a tackle, sending her back several feet. She slid through the mud, messing up her appearance even more. What was once perfectly groomed, glorious purple fur was now sticking up in muddy brown chunks. Her whiskers were sticking together in a few places. She certainly looked as if she'd seen better days. And of course, with this disgusting appearance came a greater rage toward her opponent. The Pidgey had been a nuisance. But this Mudkip was purely infuriating!
Well, almost all tame Pokemon were. They thought they were so much stronger and more superior because they had to live out their lives under the command of a trainer. Not her! She was free to do as she pleased! Ha!
<Take this!> she sneered, lunging toward him in a Tackle. Now that he knew what to expect with her Quick Attack, he would probably have been able to react if she'd used it twice in a row. With this decision, she was hoping to catch the stupid blue Pokemon off guard and land a hit. Whether or not it would work, well, that would be clear in a moment.

Oberon saw that the Rattata was charging slightly more slowly than last time, and hopped out of the way, landing on his feet and staring at the Rattata again. His mouth once again opened, teeth bared in a growl. It had worked last time. Would it work a second time?
When he had finished his growl, he charged again at Rattata in a Tackle attack. He was a little tired, so moved slightly slower than normal, but he hoped to hit the wild rat one more time. It could be enough to weaken the attacking Rattata a little.
Talis was a little surprised at seeing Oberon attack by himself. He hadn't expected it, but he was more than a little pleased that it was taking the initiative. "Good job, Oberon! Keep going. Come on, you can do it!" he cheered. This was totally out of character for him, but it felt totally right.

The Mudkip growled at her again, and she narrowed her eyes in response. Her physical attacks would not be effective if he kept that up, and then she'd be helpless. In an absolute refusal to let this happen, she turned around and wagged her tail in the direction of the Water Pokemon once again, to lower his defense as he'd lowered her attack. She didn't have any sort of move to up her own stats, so taking his down would be the best thing she could do right now.
All the same, wasn't he a water Pokemon? Why did he keep attacking her with the same moves, again and again? She knew what to expect when he came at her with a tackle, and so the purple rat leaped to the side to avoid it. <Come on!> she taunted, sneering. <You can do better than that, fish-face!> Yeah. Not the greatest, most creative insult in the world, but whatever. She'd deal with it.
Now, for her turn. She'd already countered his growl with her Tail Whip, and so she didn't have time to deal any damage. She just hoped that his next attack wouldn't take her down.

Talis knew that Mudkip's only real water attack was Whirlpool at this point, and there was no real water anywhere around. Just a shallow river. He could ask Oberon to make a Whirlpool to the best of his abilities, but it might not be worth the gamble.
As Oberon's eyes became a little glazed, Talis came to a decision. Taking a deep breath, he yelled: "Oberon! Whirlpool, now!"
Oberon focused on the river, and pinched his black eyes shut as the water rose from the river bed, spinning and soaring towards the Rattata. Oberon hoped to trap and possibly bind it with this move, while he prepared for a Tackle attack.

A weak current of thankfully clean water started to wrap around the Rattata's body, constantly following her wherever she moved. It was just loose enough for her to keep making attacks if she wished, but movement was limited, and it kept lashing out at her body. It looked as if she was going to be taking damage for a while. Now completely soaked with no chance of drying off until this battle was won, she hissed fiercely at the Mudkip. Oh no he didn't!
<You idiot. You realize that water is what started this conflict in the first place?> She asked, enraged that he dared to keep up with these stupid shenanigans. It looked as if he was ready to go ahead with another Tackle, but she wasn't going to let him to that. Using a Quick Attack for the extra speed and accuracy, she decided to beat him to the first strike.
