Nathara pushed down the urge to take a few steps forward and grab the pokemon. Instead, she put the potion on the ground, and backed away a few feet. Gesturing to Razel and Tego to come nearer, she whispered something quietly enough that the nincada shouldn't be able to hear.
"If it tries to run, please block it. I can't let a wounded pokemon try to fend for itself."
Razel nodded, and started to walk in a wide circle towards a point behind the bug pokemon. Tego flew upwards, and positioned himself a good distance above the nincada.
"Please believe me, I'm only trying to help."

<What trainer wants to help a pokemon? Don't you just catch them and be on your way?> The Nincada, still trying to edge away. The Sneasel behind him and Yanma above him were going to make that difficult. Is this what you would call being caught between a rock and a hard place? The Sneasel's speed would easily catch him if he tried to leave from the left or the right. It wasn't like he could jump or fly away. But he could go down, at least a little bit. The injury on his stomach would prevent him from completely digging away, but he could at least put some of his body in the dirt to ease the pain.
He began to use his claws to try to dig a bit of a hole. He didn't need a trainers help. He'd always helped himself before.

"Well...yes, trainers often catch Pokémon, and I'm looking to add to my team. However, after you let me heal you, if you decide that you don't want to come with us on our journey, I won't force you. Right now, I refuse to leave until that wound is healed to some degree. If I leave now, the next trainer that walks past here will catch you, and I can't guarantee that they will be nice."
That sudden speech surprised Nathara as much a it did Razel and Tego. They both stared at her for a few seconds, shock written on their features. Where had this confidence come from? If anything, she should be even more shy and uncertain than before, considering what just happened several minutes ago. She would have to think about this later. For now, Nathara needed to find out why this nincada was so paranoid.
Maybe it has something to do with that injury.
Now that she thought about it, this pokemon's behavior was probably to be expected. That wound had obviously come from a Pokémon battle. Chances were that it wasn't a wild Pokémon either. If a trainer roughed him up, and then either unsuccessfully tried to catch him or just left him to die, that would explain this panic and paranoia.
Poor guy.

Maybe it had not understood her, maybe the panic made the bug pokemon have selective hearing, but only the last part of her speech truly registered. but the pokemon let out a little high-pitched shriek when Nathara mentioned the possibility of another trainer walking down the route. The digging speed increased, though the results were still poor as the compact dirt did not give easily. Please don't please don't please don't, the pokemon thought to itself, the adrenaline from the wound coupled with the intense fear was the only thing keeping him from going on.
It did not take any time before his strength completely left the little pokemon's body. His movements were slowing down more and more and desperation started to settle in. If bugs could cry, the nincada would probably be doing so as it wondered why he was unable to competently dig a hole, why he could not just hide and lick his wounds -- figuratively of course -- in peace?

Nathara almost panicked herself when the nincada started to dig faster. He was going to injure himself further!
I'm not going to get through to him this way.
How else could she possibly calm this pokemon down, outside of trying to reason with him. She gave her two partners pleading looks. Tego left his position above the terrified bug type and flew down close to his trainer.
<I'm really worried about this guy. He'll end up fainting if he goes on much longer.>
He talked quietly, despite the fact that the nincada probably couldn't hear anything over the sound of his own fear.
"What should I do, though?"
Tego stared silently at the human. Her eyes widened in realization.
"You think I should...catch him?"
He buzzed in the affirmative.
"I just told him that I wouldn't!"
<Does it look like he heard you? Besides, isn't his health more important?>
More important than keeping your promises? An icy hand closed around Nathara's stomach. Two sets of morals were battling for supremacy inside her being. On one side, she was taught to always keep her promises. On the other, she had learned to conciser the health of a pokemon before all else. Finally, one side one over.
"...Alright."
She pulled out her empty Net Ball. With a whispered apology, she tossed it at the desperate nincada.

The nincada did not notice the ball until it was too late and it hit its delicate body, making it squeak, not too loud at first, but the moment it realized what was happening it became frantic. The pokeball emitted the brilliant red light, engulfing the struggling Pokémon and trapping it in its metal confined. The ball started to shake and tremble violently, the Pokémon inside trying to escape, trying to get out of there. Unfortunately, the net ball was quite efficient against bug Pokémon and the nincada stood no chance.
Finally, the ball clicked shut and all struggles became futile.

Nathara gave a sigh of relief as the net ball clicked shut, but the knot of guilt remained. Taking out a potion, she stooped down and picked up the sphere, openning it once more to release her newest Pokémon.
The nincada still looked frantic, but didn't try to run away.
"Now will you let me heal you?"
The bug type crouched low to the ground, as if trying to sink into the dirt below. There was no reply. She sighed again, and crouched down. As she sprayed the potion on his shaking form, Nathara spoke again.
"Look, I'm really sorry, but I couldn't just leave you."
<Yes you could! I'm able to take care of myself!>
<Not injured like that, you couldn't.>
Razel walked over from where he had been standing a few feet off the path. Anger mixed with the fear in the nincada's eyes, but he didn't reply. Nathara changed the subject quickly.
"Would you like the name Vexant?"
<A name?>
"Well, yes. Typically, when a Pokémon is captured by a trainer, he or she is given a name.
<I don't know why you asked me. You didn't ask me before throwing the pokeball...>
She sighed in exasperation, then summoned Vexant back into his pokeball before standing up.
"Now that that's over, shall we continue?"
Tego buzzed happily, and Razel nodded. Together, they set off down the path once more. Nathara's frustration slowly seeped away, and was replaced by her earlier eagerness as she admired the beauty that was Route 1.

A cheerful little Sentret was hopping down the trail. She was lost, terribly so, but such things had long since stopped bothering the careful soul. Having a slight problem with her memory, she'd been wandering off ever since she was a very small Pokemon. Her brothers and sisters had never understood it, had even made fun of her for it, and so she'd eventually just wandered away and decided to stay 'lost' for good.
Problem was, she'd been searching for her home for some time now, and it simply wasn't in sight. She missed her parents, wished that she had told them goodbye, but the poor thing didn't have a clue where they were. Still, it wasn't something that upset her too terribly. If she let the sadness weigh upon her, she'd never find her family! And finding them had been an obsession of hers for some time now. Now, of course, it had only been a few days since she'd run away... but thanks to her forgetfulness, the Sentret was thoroughly convinced that it had been much longer.
While she was steadily traveling down the path, she came across a rather odd sight. There was a trainer there, with a Pokemon she'd never seen before! Still, maybe they'd seen her siblings?
<Excuse me?> she called, in a soft voice. <I don't suppose you've seen any other Sentret around here, have you?> It couldn't hurt to ask, after all.

Nathara stopped in her progress down the trail when a young rodent pokemon came waddling from the opposite direction. After a few moment's thought, she recognized it as a sentret.
"No, I don't think so. Tego? Razel?"
<Nope.>
<Me neither.>
"Tego, could you fly around and search for any other sentret?"
<Of course!>
Cheerfully, he flew into the surrounding forest. He was soon out of view.
"My friend should find someone soon. His vision is excellent. While we wait, would you mind me asking why?"

Well, at least this trainer was helpful! One of her younger brothers had approached a trainer once, she recalled suddenly. That trainer had fought him with really strong Pokémon and knocked him unconscious, and then they'd taken him away. The Sentret didn't want that to happen to her. She loved her freedom, she highly valued it. But this girl and her Pokémon seemed nice and willing to help, because she sent one of her Pokemon, a Yanma, out into the forest to look.
<Oh, thank you!> the little Sentret squeaked happily, bouncing up and down a few times on the spot due to her excitement. Maybe she'd finally be able to see her family again! Then the trainer asked why, and her expression clouded momentarily. <I couldn't find my family,> she admitted, a little shy. <I've been looking for them for ages,> she stressed, beady little eyes going wide.
Eying the Pokémon that had remained with her trainer for a brief moment before looking away, the Sentret decided it looked kind of intimidating. Still, it hadn't attacked her yet, so she figured that she was safe.

Nathara gave an understanding nod.
"You're lost, then. Don't worry, it happens to everyone."
As his trainer said this, Razel noticed the pokemon glace his way, seeming a little intimidated. He smiled.
<I won't bite.>
His words were tinged with amusement.
<My name's Razel, and this is my trainer Nathara.>
Meanwhile, Tego was darting through the forest, searching for a sentret. How hard could it be to locate such a common pokemon? Why, just the other day he had seen a small group of them. Where was that? It didn't matter now, it was unlikely that they were still in the same spot.

The Sentret jumped slightly in surprise when the strange Pokemon spoke to her, but nodded when he promised he wouldn't bite. The trainer and her Pokemon had seemed nice enough so far, so surely they'd keep to their word, right? She sure hoped so. Razel. What an interesting name! She'd never had a name before, and knew a slight pang of jealousy. Oh well. She didn't really think that having to travel and fight was a fair exchange for a simple name, anyways. Heck, she could name herself if she wanted to! But it would feel too strange, so she didn't think she'd do it, anyways.
His trainer had an odd name, too. Nathara. She didn't think she'd be able to repeat it properly if she tried, so she simply gave a light nod and a smile. <I've never seen a Pokemon like you before,> she said to Razel, a little less intimidated by the odd Pokemon as she had been before. Knowing his name had helped, it made things seem a little less tense.
Meanwhile, just as she was looking for them, Sentret's family had set out to search for her. These disappearances were far too common, however, and so they were hardly the frantic parents and siblings you'd expect. Instead, they were strolling leisurely through the surrounding forest, occasionally calling out, but otherwise just chattering amongst one another in bored, exasperated tones.

Razel was relieved to see the sentret relax slightly.
<I'm not surprised. There aren't any sneasels in this forest.>
As an ice type, sneasels preferred colder areas, especially mountains with snow. They would be quite out of place in a warm forest like this. He laughed inwardly at the very thought.
<So, how did you get lost in the first place?>
Nathara listened silently, content to watch the two Pokémon talk amongst themselves.
I wonder how Tego is faring.
Just then, said yanma had heard someone calling out. He flew in the direction of the sound, curious as to it's origin. After a short flight, he came upon a small group of the Pokémon he had been searching for. Several sentret were making their way through the undergrowth and talking amongst themselves. Tego gave a joyful cheer, and swooped down to meet them.
<Hello! Would you happen to be searching for a young sentret?>

Sneasel?
Hmm. She thought she'd heard the name before, but she was absolutely certain that there were none in this forest. She'd never traveled outside of it, and didn't really plan to. But it did seem kind of fun, now that she looked at it from a different angle. There were probably tons of places and Pokemon she'd never seen before. <Do you travel a lot? she asked, with the clear and innocent curiosity of a young Pokemon.
How did she get lost? The Sentret thought about that for a moment. And another moment. Her expression clouded with confusion. <I'm... not sure,> she said, a puzzled tone in her voice. <I can't remember.> It wasn't surprising for those that knew her, but it might have seemed odd to total strangers.
The largest member of the group, a cheerful, somewhat chubby Sentret, gave a start of surprise when the Yanma spoke. <Matter of fact, we are!> he exclaimed. <Why? Have you seen her?>
Most of the younger Sentret drew back in fear, but one brave male bounded forward slightly, watching the Yanma with bold curiosity. How had it known what they were looking for?

Nathara smiled at the strange answer. The sentret didn't remember how it got lost?
<Will we ever! Traveling is perhaps the one thing trainers and their Pokémon do most! To tell you the truth, this is our first day as partners, so we haven't gone far yet. However, there is an entire world to explore, and a lifetime to do so.>
Razel was very excited by this question. Exploring was something he looked forward to greatly. Battles were fun, but the thrill of the unknown appealed to him more than anything else.
Tego flew around in an excited circle.
<Yes, I have seen her! My trainer sent me to find you! Follow me, please.>
With that, the yanma headed back in the direction he had flown from.

<Really? That sounds exciting. I could never do something like that.> The Sentret replied with very wide, curious eyes. Although the thought scared her, her imagination showed a romantic dream of the future of her on an epic journey. Of course she could never actually do that, mostly because she had a family that cared about her. With a submissive sigh, she sat idly on her tail as she continued to think about things to talk about.
<So what if you get lost? I'm sure I'm not the only one in the world that gets lost.> She pointed out, trying to make herself feel just a tad better than before.
::sentret::
Meanwhile...
<Eh...are we there yet? A younger male Sentret complained, earning a glare from the rest of the Sentret family. He pouted in response, not particularly caring about whether his sister was still lost in the wilderness. Honestly, if there was a trainer with her, then he knew that she was safe. I mean, if the Yanma made the effort to go fetch them...
<Hang on. What if this is a trap?> The youngest pipped up, raising a few curious ears within the group. The father of the little Sentret suddenly got up on his tail, looking as if he was in deep thought. Yes, the youngster had brought up a point.
<You guys go back to the nest, alright? Just in case. I'm strong enough to take care of myself.> The chubby father Sentret advised, ushering the his family away just in case this human couldn't be trusted. He eyed the Yanma wearily, as if he was going to attack him at any moment in an obsessive manner.

<Lost? I hadn't thought about that...but Tego could scout out the way for us, so that shouldn't be a problem.>
That thought had truthfully never crossed Razel's mind. He was certain that not all routes had a clear path to follow. With his friends, however, what was there to fear?
<Anyway, what makes you think that you couldn't make a good explorer? You certainly have more guts than that nincada my trainer caught, and we're bringing him along.>
Back amongst the trees, Tego was momentarily at a loss for words.
<You don't trust me? That's absolutely preposterous! Why would I mislead you?>
Once the shock and anger passed, the yanma shook his head, and flew on, not waiting for the other Pokémon to reply.
<It isn't far now, just a little further.>

The young Sentret's eyes widened. How nice it would be, to have someone to scout the way for you. She'd never be lost again if that happened! And she was so sick and tired of being lost that, at this moment, it sounded like a slice of heaven. The wonder showed in her eyes as she gazed at them for a moment. <That must be nice...> Her tone was distant, and a little envious. Her mind, however, was envisioning never having to worry and wander around all alone again. Jealousy seeped over her, and the first pang of real sadness pierced her heart.
She shook it off when the Sneasel spoke again, her eyes widening further still at his compliment. <R-Really?> No one had ever told her anything like that before! It was usually: "You're so useless!" or "I can't believe you got lost again!" She'd never thought about it before, but her family weren't all that nice to her once she returned to them. They'd been nice about it the first few times, but after a while...
<I have to do what's best for my family,> the boisterous, round-bellied Sentret insisted. He still didn't fully trust the Pokemon, trainers hardly ever meant well from his many experiences, but if it would help them get their daughter back, he supposed he had to do it. She was rather a nuisance, getting lost all of the time, but they were family, and so he had to countless times take the whole group and go out looking.

<Of course! Do you think I'd say such a thing if I didn't mean it?>
It was true. When he had first seen this sentret, and found out about her predicament, he had noticed that the pokemon didn't seem scared in the least. Razel doubted that even he would have remained so calm in the same situation.
Nathara found this entire conversation absolutely fascinating. Not only was the normal type opening up a little to her partner, Razel was complementing her. It showed her that she really didn't know the sneasel too well yet. Hopefully that would change over time.
<Yes, you're right. I'm sorry. It's just that I can't imagine my trainer doing anything to harm your family. Oh, here we are!>
Tego had just emerged from the thick greenery to find Nathara and the two pokemon, standing where he had left them.
<Hello again! I've found some sentret, like you asked!>

The poor Sentret puzzled over that for a moment, clearly unsure of herself. As mentioned before, no one had ever been that nice. Suddenly much more shy than she'd been before, she looked away slightly. <W-Well it's just... no one's ever told me that before. Even my family...> But she trailed off with a sad shake of her head. What was the point in explaining everything? It wouldn't change her current situation, anyways.
And even if she'd wanted to explain, she wouldn't exactly have had the time. For at that moment, Tego returned from his flight, trailing none other than her father in his wake. <You really do have good vision!> she exclaimed, amazed. How had he spotted them? But her face fell at the expression on her father's face. He didn't look too happy, only disappointed and exasperated. Like always.
<Come on,> he said to her, nodding in the direction of their family. <The others are waiting.>
With a last attempt at a smile, she waved goodbye to Nathara and her Pokemon. <I guess I have to leave now,> she said. <Goodbye... and thank you for finding my family.> Even if she didn't get along with them, at least she was safer in the large group.
::sentret:: Sentret is leaving. Interfere, or move on?
