Sophia shook her feet as she stepped into Route One, her newfound Shinx on her shoulder. "Well, here's where we start." she smiled, tickling the Shinx under the chin. He closed his eyes and almost seemed to smile. It seemed he was enjoying it. Chuckling, she looked at his round golden eyes and thought to herself, before speaking out loud. "Now... what are we going to call you?" She looked intently at her new companion as she pondered to herself. "Magnet isn't gonna work, because of Magnemite already having it... Discharge just sounds perverted, and what are the Elite Four going to think if I tell Discharge to Growl?""Conduit." decided Sophia. "That's what I'm going to call you. She hesitated for a moment, looking at Shinx concernedly. "Is that OK?"The Shinx nodded, and Sophia sighed in relief as they walked down the Route. ::modcoin::

<I can do this! Wurmple coming up strong!> the tiny little pink bug moved forward rapidly, his form contracting and expanding as he shuffled along the ground. <THE WINNER IS WURMPLE!>
The little bug made a series of odd bowing-like movements, eyes shut tight as he imagined himself holding the Cup above his head in victory. He had done it! He had won the race!
Peering around, the little insect deflated slightly. He'd only won because the others had all stayed behind it seemed. <Ohh.... that makes it less impressive...>
Poor little Wurmple. This was the fourth time this week his so called friends had challenged him to a race along the Route only for them to stay back and laugh at him as he went onwards with all the energy he could muster. Sure, he could be annoying with his constant babbling about the scenery and the various trainers that came along their route... but did he really deserve this?
<Oh pooey.>

Sophia spotted a little Wurmple. It seemed to be celebrating something or other, and she smiled at the almost comical sight of the little worm cheering with all the might histiny form could muster.
Sitting down on a nearby log, she frowned as his smile vanished. Seemed something was wrong with him, and she couldn't help asking it. "Hey. Are you OK?" That was Sophia through and through. She just couldn't leave people alone when she thought something was wrong.
Conduit climbed down from Sophia's shoulder and smiled at the Wurmple as he lay down comfortably in Sophia's lap, crossing one paw over the other.

The Wurmple glanced up at the friendly human and her Shinx, a bit surprised to see her approach. Taking a hesitant step back, with his many legs, he tilted his head in curiosity. Was she really that interested in him? Hearing her question, he blushed in response, looking down at his first two arms bashfully as he twirled them around each other. <O-oh. I guess I'm fine. How are you?> He replied back shyly, occasionally peeking back up at her to see her reaction.
<Why are you out here, m-miss?> He asked, feeling like he should try and start some kind of conversation. Maybe there was a reason that she wanted to talk to him. Or maybe she just wanted to make fun of him, like the rest of his friends.

Although Sophia couldn't understand the little bug or what it was saying, she got the gist that it was asking what she was doing, and so she responded with a small smile.
"Well, I'm a Pokemon Trainer." she said softly. "I try to train Pokemon to be the best they possibly can, like Conduit here." As she mentioned her Shinx, she stroked his soft head gently, making him smile.
"So what are you up to?" she asked him. "You seemed pretty happy earlier. Why the long face now?"

The tiny pink worm sighed sadly at the girl's question. He had been so happy when he'd won the race! He'd been winning them more frequently of late; but that was only because his friends would just... stay back in their clearing and leave him to race himself for a good hour or so.
<Oh... um. I won the race!> he said, trying not to sound proud of himself. It hit him again. <... but only because my friends didn't actually race me.> He looked sheepishly towards the ground and continued to twirl his first two limbs shyly. What would she think of him now?
Poor little Wurmple. His friends were so cruel. And now he was talking to some trainer he'd never met before as though she was his own personal psychologist. He peeked at her and tilted his head slightly. <Friends don't do that to other friends... do they?>

Looking back and realizing that there was no one else with the Wurmple, who was quite social with other bug types, she put two and two together and, miraculously, came up with four on the first try. "Did your friends leave you on your own?"Conduit understood the Wurmple, and frowned, his little golden eyes creasing in displeasure. >I wouldn't do that to my friends.< he squeaked proudly, holding his little blue head high in the air with pride. "It wouldn't be very nice if they left you here. But still. Congrats on getting here. It can't have been easy. You're a pretty strong little guy." Sophia moved herself closer to the Wurmple, placing her hand beside him, hoping it wouldn't scare him away. "I treat my friends much better than that."

The wurmple flinched just a bit when the hand came close, but the Pokémon relaxed once it realized Sophia wasn't going to hurt him. Still, the large hands in proportion to the small pink body was still unnerving. The wurmple nodded. <They told me that they'd give me a head start, but...> The worm looked back. The route behind him was still empty and the wurmple let out a sigh. <Thank you, though. You are... very kind. But I have to be on my way...>
The Pokémon turned around to face the direction. The girl had just made it even more sad with that last comment. Why couldn't he have any friends that treated him nicely? The lengthening and contraction of his body was much slower than when he had crawled over due to both fatigue and lack of enthusiasm.

"You know...." said Sophia. "If you were to come with me, I'd be much nicer to you. You'd have the best food, you'd be able to grow strong, and I'd never trick you like they did."
She stood up, smiling at the Wurmple. "You look sad, and you shouldn't have to be sad. Come with me. We can see the world, try new foods and experiences." She stroked Conduit as she spoke. "What do you say?"

The pokemon stopped in its tracks at the preposition. Was the girl lying to him? He sure hoped not. She seemed so kind and genuine that he wanted to believe it to be true. <R-really?> he asked, turning around again. He thought about it for a second. <I'll be your friend, but only if you race me!>
The wurmple had an uneasy smile on his face, still unsure if the trainer and her pokemon were going to lie to him and make fun of him like the rest of them. But... finally racing with someone else... that sounded like so much fun! <We can race up to that tree over there,> declared the pokemon, pointing its tiny hands at a tree not incredibly far away.

Sophia understood what the Wurmple was trying to get her to do, and she smiled. "Alright then. A race it is." She picked up the Wurmple gently, aware of how delicate the Bug Pokemon was, and placed it beside her. Conduit ran to her right, wanting to join in as well. "On your marks." Sophia flexed with a smile. "Get set." She bent her legs, ready to sprint. "Go!"She immediately sprinted, not sure whether the Wurmple would be able to go fast enough to catch up, and Shinx ran close behind. She didn't want the Wurmple to feel slow, but a proper run would boost his confidence, and if he didn't feel like he was allowed to win, he may feel more trusted and less patronised. That was the plan anyway, and everything sounded good in theory. Sophia just hoped it wouldn't be offended if it lost. ::shinx::

[[You'll need a link to Sophia's PC when you get the chance. ^^ ]]
The Wurmple felt his heart nearly pound itself out of his chest as his legs ran against the ground, constantly moving. Keeping his stamina in check was difficult after his previous race with those invisible friends of his, but he felt his confidence boost when he realized that he was ahead of the Shinx. Oh boy! He stood a chance! Even though his breath became heavy and distorted, he saw that he was catching up to the human.
Look at those long legs though. Now that was an unfair advantage. With his tiny legs, though he had more, it wouldn't be enough to reach the tree. Thinking quickly, he aimed a delicate String Shot at one of the branches, and clinging to the string, ran forward so he could use it to propel him to the tree even faster.
Like Tarzan himself, he let out a battle cry as he ended up getting closer and closer and closer to the tree. In fact, he was getting a bit too close. He grinned when he turned to give the girl a teasing wink, but by the time he turned to see the tree, he had literally crashed right into it. Um. Ow? He fell back down to the ground, actually fainting from it.

Sophia blinked and Shinx gawped as the Wurmple soared past on a String Shot, even finding time to turn around and shoot Sophia a cheeky wink. She smiled, but the smile vanished when she saw what was going to happen, knowing there was nothing she could do to stop it at the speed the unfortunate little worm Pokemon was going at. She still tried to yell. "Look out!" she exclaimed, but it was much too late. She swore she heard a smooshing sound as the poor, minute Wurmple smashed into the tree, falling back down to the ground, and winced in empathy with the Pokemon as she ran over to him. "Hey, are you alright?" she asked, kneeling down beside him and cradling his spiked head in her hands. It didn't seem it could hear her. He had actually knocked himself out because of that blow. Not good. Pulling out a little tea cosy she inexplicably kept in her pocket, she carefully wrapped the Wurmple in it like a blanket, before setting him down on a raised patch of moss. Sitting there, guarding him, she was determined to take good care of him until he regained consciousness. On his own, the unconscious Wurmple would be easy pickings for the wide variety of flying types that roamed Route 1. Shinx sat on Sophia's lap, also waiting for the little worm to wake up. ::shinx::

NOTES; :) MUSE; N/A TAGS; Talis, Mods POKEMON; Wurmple.
Wurmple, in his unconsciousness, was daydreaming about winning the race. In his mind, he had shot well past Sophia and claimed his winnings, and both the trainer and her Shinx had congratulated him heartily. His tiny heart had swelled with pride and joy, and he'd finally felt like he was worth something, for once. Wurmple had been somebody. And it had felt so nice that he'd almost not wanted to wake up. A slight smile touched his bug-like features, and he shifted slightly in his unconsciousness. A winner. He had been a winner.
But as he was coaxed back into consciousness, a frown replaced the bright smile. He wasn't a winner anymore. Far from that, he'd crashed into a tree and knocked himself out cold. And when he was no longer living his fantasies, he had no friends, he had nobody. Sure, he'd won, as in he'd beat Sophia to the tree, but that didn't accomplish anything. And though he hated to admit it to himself, these perfect strangers were the closest things to friends that he'd ever had.
He sighed sadly. Well, he'd won, hadn't he? That meant that he couldn't join them. It was somewhat sad. He'd already been looking forward to being a part of the team. <Well... I guess I'll be going now...> He shuffled out of the tea cozy and dipped his small head to Sophia. <Thank you for stopping to talk to me.> Feeling more alone than ever, the worm Pokemon silently vowed that he would one day be strong enough to race. He'd beat all of his 'friends', who weren't really friendly at all.
<Bye,> he said to the Shinx, then started to shuffle up the path.

"Hey." Sophia spoke in a tone of mock indignation that might scare the little worm at first, but she soon reasserted herself with a smile. "You're fast. And you improvise. I want you on my team, friend." She folded her arms insistently. "And I'm not taking no for an answer."Conduit nodded as well. >You deserve better than what you're getting. You'll be happy with Sophia.< ::shinx::

The Wurmple perked up as the human and her Shinx continued to comfort him with kind words. Blushing from another case of bashfulness, he started to rub his cheeks anxiously, trying to hide the flushed color. There were others that cared about him that much? Oh my...it was a bit much to handle for one day, but he felt extremely flattered at the sentiment. Gazing back up at Sophia's kind expression, his eyes teared up as he tried to sputter out a reply.
<I-I can go with you? I mean, when I said that you had to race me, I never said that you had to win. S-so...nothing is stopping me.> He managed to spit out, trying to make up whatever reason possible for him staying with her and the Shinx, and by golly, he would stand by it. With a tiny nod, he decided it on his own.
He was going to accompany this human on her journey! As long as he was surrounded by a good group of friends, he felt like he would always be quite happy. Smiling, he waddled right up to her legs, trying to climb up onto her lap.

Sophia smiled warmly gently, scratching the Wurmple on the back of the neck as he climbed up onto her lap. She saw that he was struggling not to cry from happiness, and she was flattered by it. This was exactly what the Wurmple needed to build his self confidence a little. Sophia was all too happy to take him in, and Conduit beamed at the Wurmple with a friendly look as well. Taking out a Pokeball, Sophia placed it on her lap for the little worm Pokemon to climb into when he was ready. ::shinx::

The Wurmple pressed his soft nose against the button in the center of the Pokeball, a bit surprised to see it open up instantly at the contact. Staring at the inside of it curiously, wondering how he was supposed to fit inside of it, the sphere had already worked its magic charms into sucking him up. In fact, to any other watchers, it would've looked like he was being eaten or something.
Glad to have a pair of new friends, the Wurmple wasn't eager to put up a fight within the Pokeball at all. His choice was already made, and he wasn't about to change his mind right now. The Pokeball simply stopped shaking in the middle of the clearing, remaining deathly still until a 'Ping!' signaled his capture.

Sophia smiled as the Wurmple was absorbed into the Pokeball, and adapted to his new home without a struggle. With a little whoop of exhiliration, Sophia cupped the Pokeball in both her hands and held it up to the sky, talking to her new Pokemon within. "Welcome to the team." She put the Pokeball in her belt, and with she and Conduit in high spirits, they continued with a spring in their step. ::shinx::

<Boom-chicka! Boom-chicka! Boom! Boom! Boom!> A funny little chanting emerged from the base of a nearby pine tree. A young green worm was crawling around the base, unable to take her eyes off the center of the tree, where the sun's ray's beautifully peaked through the rainbow colored leaves. So stunned by it's beauty, she found herself chanting a rain dance around the tree so it could live another year.
<Tree! Oh great tree! You have my blessings!> She cried, suddenly coming to a halt and bowing before the mighty tree. It was almost as if she was some kind of priestess or something. Except she was much too young to have that sort of holy power, so perhaps she was just playing make believe?
<So quiet and sullen you are, but it's ok, my beloved tree. You are safe with me!> While hugged the tree affectionately while saying this, rubbing her head up and down at the same time. To her, that was the ultimate sign of affection. Nothing beat the adorable head snuggle. NOTHING.
