It was bossy, annoying, and arrogant. Then again; so was Eris. But she was different, she was his partner and his friend, and this Pokemon was just irritating. The way it crushed the berry in it's beak actually succeeded in disgusting him a little. Honestly, if a Pokemon was so fat and lazy that it couldn't even be bothered to hop over to a bush and pick it's own berries, Josh wasn't going to sympathize with it. He didn't say anything at first, however, just glared at the other Pokemon and cocked a brow challengingly. Eris, once again, was the ever-so-blunt one. <Ha, owl Pokemon. From the looks of it, you clearly resemble a pig!> She waved her curled tail dramatically and rolled her eyes. <What kind of bet?> piped up Asteria inquisitively, skittering closer to the Clefairy. She didn't like the Hoothoot much, either, so she completely ignored him. <And how'd you lose?> The Hoothoot didn't take her as someone who was a nice guy, so she figured the standards must have been pretty strict. The penance for losing certainly didn't seem fair.

Hoothoot shot a glare right back at the human, cheeks still bursting with the ripe fruit he was at work eating. <Well, whaddya want?> He asked bluntly, bits of berry flying out of his beak in the process. Then he heard the cat's words and clenched his wing in anger. <You dare insult me? Well, then, I'll make a bet with you.> He began, swallowing the berry he'd been munching on. <Battle me. If I win, you'll be my berry-collecting slave as well. If I lose, I'll let Clefairy go.> He challenged, chest feathers fluffing out pridefully.
Clefairy gestured toward Hoothoot with a quick nudge of her head, then whispered into the water spider's ear. <I challenged him on the conditions that if I won, he'd fly his fat butt off of route 1, and if I lost I'd do what he wanted.> She said mournfully. <You see, he's eaten practically half of the berries in the orchard. Everyone's mad about it.>

The Hoothoot was a pain in the arse already, and they'd only known him for a couple of minutes. The idea of having that fat pig terrorizing the Pokémon and their berry supply with his laziness was revolting. Plus, he'd heard that there was a Pokémon Gym in Electric City. If he trained his team to a high enough level, he'd be able to challenge it and get his first badge. The idea sounded pretty swell to Joshua, and so he nodded. "We'll do something," he promised Asteria. "Seems like Eris has already taken matters into her own hands, anyways." As the water-spider flounced back to the ground, Joshua cast a patiently bemused expression toward his navy-furred comrade. Eris hissed at the Hoothoot, eyes narrowing dangerously as she lashed her tail back and forth. <You're definitely going to be moving your over-sized behind out of this field!> she snarled arrogantly at him, claws unsheathed already. Joshua didn't have to tell her there was going to be a fight, she was already raring to go. <You're going down! Just say the word, Joshua, and I'll fillet him like a fish, tear out his feathers and->He forced himself not to laugh. "Alright, we get it. Growl, then Fake Out!"Fluttering her eyelashes, Eris gave a cute growl in attempt to lower her foes attack, then quickly drew close to him and swung her paw for a heavy blow. Eris used Growl and Fake Out on Hoothoot!

Clefairy gave a beaming smile as she realized that the trainer and his Pokémon were about to lend help to her cause. Seeing no point in gathering berries for the fat owl, she went and sat down next to the water spider and watch the show appreciatively.
::clefairy::
Hoothoot gave a sour look at the kitten as she accepted his challenge. <We'll see about that.> He hissed, taking flight out of the bush he was perched upon and landing slowly onto the dirt, wobbling a little due to his obesity. He looked on as the cat gave a growl, at which he dropped his guard, and began to approach him. He felt an odd urge to stand still that overwhelmed his urge to attempt to dodge, and as the fake out came he drew back and felt his nerves tingling in surprise. Unable to attack for the turn, he watched in horror to see what else the cat would do in such close range.
Hoothoot flinched.

That was why she hadn't wanted to fight her when they'd met. Plus, Josh seemed really nice, so he wouldn't let them lose, right? <How long has he been tormenting this place?> she asked with concern. That fat old meanie sure had some nerve! Joshua watched with satisfaction as the owl Pokémon lowered his guard, and Eris struck flawlessly in her attack. It was helpful that Fake Out could always strike without fail; the only downside was that it only worked on the first turn. Hoothoot flinched, and Joshua realized that there would not be time for another Growl if they were to take advantage of the moment. So, rather than using the combination of attacks, he commanded, "Scratch!" loud enough so that the infuriated cat could hear it over the pounding of blood in her ears that he didn't doubt she experienced in the heat of her rage. Having caught his words, Eris turned sharply and extended her paw, claws coming out in an elegant flash of brightest white as they lanced toward the owl. <You should never have challenged me!> she snarled. Eris used Scratch on Hoothoot!

Clefairy turned to look at the spider as she reassured her. Her smile grew even wider at the mention that the horrible owl would be beaten up. At her next question, the fairy pokemon's face grew dark. <He's been a glutton ever since he set foot here. Pretty much ever since he was born.> She explained.
Hoothoot was unable to move even as the cat raked her claws on his feathered neck and caused him critical damage. Finally able to use his muscles, he took advantage of the small distance between them and retaliated against the cat with a tackle. He hopped forward on his one foot and attempted to bash his huge, fat body into the petite feline.

He was fat, and lazy, and he deserved to be taught a lesson. <Yeah!> she called encouragingly to her teammate, her shrill voice raised above the din of the battle. <Take him down, Eris!>The feline femme was not used to support from anyone other than Joshua. It felt nice to know that, even if she was a jerk to them most of the time, they still had her back. But no matter how much support she had, it wasn't enough to evade the heavy owl's tackle. She grunted in pain as she was slammed into the ground, but grit her teeth in determination and shoved herself back onto all four paws. "Growl!" she heard her trainer command, and in response, she flicked her tail and emitted a kittenish sound to entice the Hoothoot, then waited for the next command. "Assurance!" Joshua told her quickly. She felt the dark energy of the attack encase her, and she lunged at her opponent fiercely, wishing to transfer it to the owl Pokemon in the form of pain and damage. There was no way she could lose this battle, she'd done very well already. Plus, she was much more agile than the other Pokemon, so she would be able to dodge quickly from his attacks provided he wasn't too close, and that she knew what to expect. Eris used Growl and Assurance on Hoothoot!

Clefairy nodded in fierce agreement with her newfound insect friend, then looked back to watch the battle and cheered along with her. She was SO ready for the day that owl would get what was coming to him.
Hoothoot flew backwards after successfully slamming his weight into his feline opponent, sniggering in triumph. At the sound of her adorable growl, he couldn't help but lower his current strength to accomodate. Suddenly, however, a dark aura seemed to enrobe his cat-like opponent, and she quickly lunged at him. Unable to have seen it coming, the hoothoot was a victim of the odd attack and was swept aside by its power. Sputtering, the bird finally managed to push himself up - a large feat for one with so much.. extra.
Sputtering with rage, the fat owl executed a Foresight in order to be able to hit his next attack better. With his skilled eyesight he homed in on the Glameow and targeted her vulnerable side - then, having chosen an area to attack, he pounced at her with all his fat in tow.

She had been expecting just a normal tackle when he'd prepared to come at her, and had planned to leap out of the way. However, he struck with much more accuracy than she'd expected, and the navy-furred feline gasped in pain as his full weight hit her, driving the breath from her small lungs and knocking her backward several feet. A critical hit... Eris lay there for a moment, white stars bursting before her vision, her eyes closed. "Eris!" Joshua called with evident concern, slate-colored eyes widening with worry. Why wasn't she getting up? He could see her flank rising raggedly, so she was still conscious, but would she be able to take much more? Realizing that the bet may just have been lost, he pulled her Pokeball from his belt and prepared to admit defeat. Eris, however, was not having that. With the most effort she'd ever exerted, the small cat Pokemon got back to her paws and faced her opponent with a murderous expression. Her anger was not uncommon, but this? This was fury. Pure, untamed rage. No one pushed her around like that and got away with it. Rather than growling cutely this time, a full-on snarl erupted from the femme's throat as she launched herself at the Hoothoot with a vicious Scratch attack, claws zipping through the air like miniature blades. Asteria let out the breath she'd been holding. <Yeah, Eris!> she cheered encouragingly, figuring that her blue-furred teammate could use the backup. Eris used Scratch on Hoothoot!

Hoothoot almost lost the air in his own lungs when he knocked Eris away, and after executing his successful tackle he dropped to the ground to watch his opponent carefully. After a few moments he was about to declare his own victory, but suddenly he spotted some movement in the little blue feline. His beak nearly dropped - how could she have stayed conscious after he had slammed all his fat into her?
He stood in shock as the cat gave a feral snarl, then in fear as she extended her sword-like claws towards him. They ripped critically across his belly, spilling drops of blood and feathers as the gouges were made. He could almost feel the passion and rage behind the feline's fierce attack. In response to the terrifying comeback strike by the cat, the hoothoot's consciousness gave out and he fell, without a sound, backward onto the dirt. Clefairy's cheers could be heard around the route at the sight of their enemy's falling.

The fight was over, and they had won. She only rested for a moment, however, before padding lightly over to the Clefairy. Eris normally wasn't the nicest of Pokemon, but she was certainly capable of being friendly on occasion. Dipping her head elegantly to the fairy Pokemon, she said, <I doubt he'll be a problem again.> Joshua was about to agree to her when she turned to him with a serious look. <I think we should capture it.>
Completely caught off guard - didn't she usually object to things like this?! - Joshua blinked. "Wait, what? You're kidding!"
She gave a curt shake of her head. <I'm not. If we capture him, we can make sure that he'll never bug the Clefairy here again, nor any other Pokemon. I don't trust him to keep his word.> Finished with her mini-speech, the cat-like Pokemon sat back down and started to groom her fur, washing the mud and blood from it carefully. It was possibly the first responsible, level-headed thing Joshua had heard her say, and he felt a flash of respect.
"Alright," he agreed, pulling out one of his last Pokeballs. "Good call." He tossed it toward the obese bird's unconscious form. Joshua also used his last Potion on his feline companion, knowing that she'd be in a lot of pain from the battle.

The pokeball jiggled off of the fallen owl's squishy belly, opening up and enveloping the bird in a flash of red light. Filled, albeit a little snugly, with the hoothoot, the sphere dropped to the ground and began to rock as the owl attempted to leave its confines. He very nearly left the ball, but lack of energy and will was his downfall. Finally giving up, the owl stopped moving and allowed the sphere to complete its capture.

He wasn't just going to toss that Hoothoot into the PC and never think about it again. "I'm going to name him Hypnos," he decided, very quietly. The fact that he was giving the Pokémon a name signified that it was going to become a part of the team, whereas the Whismur from earlier had remained nameless. "And I'm going to make sure that he regrets every single thing he's done to you," he nodded at the Clefairy, "and to Eris." His tone was oddly icy, devoid of even the normality that it usual contained.
Eris blinked. <Well, then. That's decided.>
"No objections?" he asked her, to clarify.
<None,> Eris confirmed. <But I'll claw his eyes out if he so much as looks at me wrong. You make sure that he understands that, Joshua.>
Josh laughed, warmth flooding through the ice in his voice. "I will," he promised her.
But it was time for them once again to continue their journey. He was surprised that the Pokeball didn't weigh a ton when he picked it up, as he was able to clip it to his belt with ease. He then gave the Clefairy a slight smile. "Well, you've got this place to yourselves, now," he said. "Hopefully, nothing like this ever happens again. Farewell."
Eris jumped onto his shoulder, and Asteria cheerfully waved goodbye to her new friend as she skittered back over to his side. Laden down with their very heavy burden for the future, the small team once again moved off in the direction of the city, fully aware that just about anything could appear on this route, now.

::Blaze::
Blaze fingered the items in his various pockets, going through them and moving things around. He wasn't the most organized of men, and sometimes his items get a bit cluttered. However, on the back of a flying Charizard, it was rather easy to drop things onto the ground. His gloves provided some traction, but the cold air still numbed them a bit, making his joints a bit stiff and his muscles harder to control. He had just been sorting through his pokeball when one of them slipped from his fingertips, plummeting to the ground. The trainer -- though technically still a professor -- swore loudly, though his sound was carried away by the wind.
"Ryuuku, down," he commanded. The Charizard in question took a bit more time than necessary before executing his order, especially since he recognized the pokeball being the host to his trainer's second favorite (behind himself, of course). Personally, he did not care for his 'teammates'. He was the strongest, the favorite, and Blaze really didn't need the others.
Unfortunately the trainer in question thought entirely different as Ryuuku felt the weight on his back shift, urging him to go faster, after the red and white metal sphere. "Faster, Ryu," Blaze said, just in case his actions weren't understood. His moltres was in there, and he did not want to lose her.
They neared the ground as frightening speed and Blaze saw the ball fall onto the road, not too far away from a trainer and his pokemon. He paid no heed to them and extended his arm, grabbing the capsule just as Ryuuku swooped back up. The Charizard did not go high, though, as it simply righted itself before landing, his wings displacing the dirt paving the road. The trainer climbed down, grasping the pokeball in his hands, fingers smoothing the metal surface to make sure everything was still all right. He could not release her here, Blaze knew, but he conveyed his warmth for the pokemon rested inside with his hands. Once he was sure that there was nothing wrong with the mechanism, at least, he glanced up to look at Joshua.
Well, since he was already here, maybe he could have some fun.

I mean, given what Joshua and his companions had seen so far, they'd sort of assumed they were ready for anything. There wasn't much that could catch him off guard now, seeing that he was aware that Pokemon were every bit as strange and diverse in personality as the human race which he was a part of, but hated.
But he was most certainly not prepared for what happened next.
<Joshua,> said Eris, her voice oddly tight with tension, <I strongly advise against looking up.> Now, of course, tell a man to do something, and he'll do the opposite. Joshua glanced upward curiously, just in time to see a red and white sphere hurtling toward the ground with immense speed somewhere near them. But that wasn't what caught his eye. No, instead, he found himself staring at a great black Charizard with a trainer on it's back, pursuing the sphere with determination. He didn't even have the time to be surprised before the trainer had reached the sphere and swooped it up. It was a Pokeball. A brief curiosity for whether the Pokemon inside was alright flashed across his mind, but was replaced by the sheer shock of the situation.
The dark Charizard did not depart with it's mortal burden, however. Instead, the man slid back to the ground. He glanced at Joshua, and Josh was completely at a loss of what to do. I mean, it wasn't every day something like this happened, now was it? He said nothing, just blinked slightly and wondered what on Earth the other man was doing, just standing there.
Asteria drew closer to him with fear, but Eris didn't so much as flinch. It wasn't that she didn't feel slightly threatened by the intimidating presence, she just wasn't going to show it.

Blaze looked the trainer over. He didn't seem particularly strong, but then again, no one on this route was. He could probably burn down the whole forest, and no one would be there to stop him. The only reason he didn't was possibly the sentimental value that both he and his Pokémon felt towards the routes, where he too spent countless days, months, years travelling. Cheyenne was still home to it, even if the people in it were sometimes less than pleasant.
Blaze looked over. Ryuuku was sulking again, showing his back to him, his tail moving from side to side almost violently. He smiled a bit, knowing that the Pokémon was just jealous that the attention wasn't on him, anymore. Slipping the rescued pokeball in his jacket pocket, he then extended a hand towards he trainer. "Show me what kind of trainers walk the land of Cheyenne, nowadays. I want to see everything you've got."
At the hint of a battle, Ryuuku turned his head a bit. Was Blaze going to use him? Was the trainer going to use another Pokémon in his arsenal? The fire dragon looked almost worried at that last idea, but he saw the look in Blaze's eyes, the confident and smug look that could only mean it was his turn to shine. The Pokémon prided himself in knowing that he was the only one on his trainer's team to elicit such trust, believing without a doubt that he, the first Pokémon Blaze every owned, was going to win the battle.

The other trainer was still young, perhaps a few years older than Joshua himself. But the fact that he was the obvious owner of a Charizard meant that his Pokemon team was strong, much stronger than Joshua's. Hell, Josh had only started his journey this very day! But still, how could he say no to a challenge? That was weakness, shying away from a battle. But I'll lose, he thought quickly to himself, and there was no doubt in his mind. I know I'll lose. Could I put my Pokemon through that? Only a second or two had passed since the man had spoken. Knowing, knowing that he was allowing his pride and dignity to control him, Josh made his decision.
He nodded once.
"I've got no doubt that you'll win," he said evenly, his tone smooth, "but I'll just have to give it my best." He expected Eris to yowl in outrage and insist that he was insane, but instead she just jumped down bravely from his shoulder and faced the Charizard, which was several times her size. There was no hint of her fear in the eyes that locked on to the larger Pokemons, and she didn't tremble even though her instincts were screaming at her to run for her life, and never come back here again.
<I'm up first, then,> she said curtly.
Josh knew a slight pang of self-hatred in his chest. Why was he doing this to his poor Pokemon? They were going to lose, he knew they were, and yet he was trying anyways? Vanity, pride. That was why. It was his fatal flaw, his refusal to back down even if he knew the effort was going to be a waste. Give up or die trying? He'd die any day. Defeat was shameful. So, swallowing back his nerves, he committed himself to the battle. "Go with Fake Out," he decided, speaking to Eris.
She was hardly going to leave a mark on that massive thing. But she didn't hesitate, instead heading full speed toward the Charizard before she could change her mind, and aiming for the attack.

Blaze was fully aware that there was absolutely no challenge, fighting the trainers on this route, but it was still important for him to gauge the strength of the trainers he encountered. He simply stood there, looking almost bored, waiting for his Pokémon to finish it. Ryuuku would tell him about the battle later. When he did not see the fire Pokémon retaliate, though, he knew that something was up. His eyes became focussed on the battle once again. He knew that the feline Pokémon had attacked, but with what? Scanning the signs and the cues his Pokémon gave him, he had an inkling of what was going on. He wasn't too happy about it, though, and neither was Ryuuku.
The Charizard knew he had been too smug, too arrogant, to allow the stupid cat to attack first. The Pokémon had taken him by surprise, and attacked him somewhere he did not expect. When he tried to attack back, he found his body flinching involuntarily. This split-second delay, though, gave the other Pokémon ample time to attack back. The worse thing about this was the his trainer was now watching him, and saw him get hit like this. He growled, the sound rumbling at the back of his throat as he readied for another attack.

She could tell just by the sturdy build when she slammed into it at full force, landing the attack she'd been aiming for. However, what Eris had not expected was for her opponent to flinch. Though surprise, she took the realization quite well, deciding that, if she was going to go down, she might as well go down fighting. Plus, she didn't want to let Joshua down. Surely he knew she would lose, but she wanted to prove that she'd do her best. "Growl!" he commanded, "Scratch!"The small feline gave a soft, adorable rumbling in her throat that was a mixture between a growl and a purr, then launched her second attack, flicking out her claws and attempting to score them viscously across the much larger Pokemon's darkened flesh. It wouldn't do much, but she hoped that it would be enough to leave a mark, just to prove that she wasn't completely helpless. Eris didn't like feeling helpless. Why isn't his trainer guiding him? she found herself wondering. But no, it was likely that any of this Pokemon's attacks could take her out in one hit, two only if she was incredibly fortunate. He didn't need the guidance. Eris used Growl and Scratch on Ryuuku!

Was the kitten growling? Really? The pokemon couldn't believe it. Was it trying to be cute? Of course, the distraction made his reaction time just that much slower and he was hit by the feline's claws, digging into his flesh. This time, he was prepared and counterattacked immediately with a dragon claw, feeling the draconic energy in him rush across his body and concentrating on his claws. They lengthened, just a bit, and the power emitted a few strands of wispy bluish smoke. He swiped his claws at her, though noting that her power and skill level wasn't as pathetically low as he expected it. Besides, she got a hit off him, didn't she?
Blaze watched carefully, trying to see if the pokemon used the same attack that had incapacitated his Charizard for that little moment. This time, though, the attack looked a lot more standard and his pokemon was already readying an attack. Things were back the way they should be, though he still kept his attention on the battle. Maybe this trainer was a bit stronger than previously expected and he did not want to be completely caught off guard.
