"Great job, Eris," Josh praised with a smile, as his cat-like Pokémon leaped back to her already-favorite perch on his shoulder. Joshua pulled a Pokeball out of his bag, tossing it from hand to hand for a moment. "Well, here goes nothing," he said, tossing the red and white sphere toward the unconscious little Bonsly. After all, he'd made a promise to the Pokemon, and even if he was a bit of a jerk, you could usually count on Joshua to stick to his promises.
From her high perch on her trainers shoulder, Eris flicked her tail back and forth steadily like a metronome, regarding her unconscious opponent with raised brows. <Much better than that Whismur, anyways,> she decided after a moment, with a slightly indignant sniff.
Josh chuckled.

The unconscious Bonsly was swallowed into the sphere, and in that instant the sphere's regenerative qualities woke up the small tree-mimic with a start. Realizing that the trainer had kept his word and had thrown a pokeball at him, the little rocktype shook with joy. This, in turn, made the sphere shake a bit, so the Bonsly decided to stop and hold still as the ball attempted to make a successful capture.
The little rock-type's heart was filled with happiness once he heard the ping signalling that he'd found a new home - and the start of his new life.

For a moment after the sphere encased the unconscious Pokemon, the ball started to tremble. Josh furrowed his brow in confusion. Was the little Bonsly having second-thoughts about coming on the journey with them? If that was the case, and it broke free from the sphere, Josh would let it go. Much as he wanted the rare Pokemon added to his team, he'd made a promise not to capture any of the Pokemon unless they were in full agreement.
However, the shaking settled after a moment, and there was a soft ping noise as the Pokeball signaled a successful capture. He bent down and retrieved the ball, grinning slightly. "I think I'll call him Pan," the dark-haired trainer decided, but clipped the ball to his belt. "He's probably exhausted from the battle, though, so I'll have to stop by at the Pokecenter once we reach Electric City." He might not have known much about adventure, but he'd heard about the city before, and knew it was their first stop. Maybe he'd even challenge the gym there, if he could get up the guts. But it was likely a while yet until they'd find the city. He was alright with this. Just walking down the route was enough for him.
<Let's keep going,> Eris prodded, after a moment. Joshua nodded, and the two continued the path they'd been taking before they'd come across the Bonsly.

Not many pokemon dared to venture out to the trainer after that, instead staying inside their homes or avoiding the trainer and feline pokemon in both gaze and sight. However, near the way to exit the rare pokemon sanctuary, there were a few puddles made from the dew that dripped off of the tall trees that grew there. These, in those bodies of water, some water spiders were playing together, uncaring whether the human was watching them or not.
One looked up at the figure whose shadow caused darkness to flow over them. <Hey, mister!> Shouted one of them, bouncing playfully on the water she was sliding upon. Her brother looked just as joyful, if not a little less. He looked up at the cat shyly, as if she were a predator to his species.

Eris had reluctantly gotten over her anger at Josh for the incident with the Burmy, and was content to sit on his shoulder for most of the journey, only jumping down once to stretch her paws and pad alongside him for a bit. However, by the time they'd gotten close to the exit, she was back upon his shoulder once more, and didn't take notice of the small water spiders until one of them called out.
Joshua, who had noticed the Pokemon but hadn't wanted to disturb them, paused slightly when he heard the female Pokemon's shout. Glancing toward the puddle, he couldn't help but grin lazily in amusement while watching them play. The speaker's companion seemed a little more hesitant, but Eris didn't pay either of them the attention of a predator. Instead, she was examining her reflection in the water with intense interest. <All that battling messed up my fur,> she noted disdainfully.
"Hey," Joshua replied, to the playful Pokemon; smartly choosing to ignore his own's comment.

The female Surskit skated across the puddle towards Joshua, happy that he'd decided to respond to her call. <Wanna catch me?! I wanna go on a journey, too!> She said excitedly, doing a little twirl of a dance in the water. <But I don't wanna fight the kitty, so if you wanna catch me you gotta pass a test~!> Squeaked the little spider, looking up innocently at the human's face.
Her brother continued to stare at the cat, even though she'd ignored them. He'd never seen a Pokémon like her.

This amused Joshua, but apparently Eris was not similarly entertained. <Kitty?> she repeated, raising an eyebrow delicately. The navy-colored femme lifted her chin proudly. <I'm a Glameow, actually.> Her self-pride was quite obvious as she gave a showy flick of the curled tail behind her, waving it tantalizingly.
Josh rolled his eyes.
"Don't mind her, she just likes to be the center of attention," Josh assured the two Surskit. But he could definitely use the addition to his team, the more the better (despite Eris' opinion of this) and so he nodded slightly in agreement to the slight challenge. "What kind of test would that be?" he wondered curiously. He didn't think that Eris would want another fight so soon regardless, and so the lack of violence so far added to the temptation.
Eris glanced at the male Pokemon who was staring at her. <What?> she asked, somewhat indignant; she failed to understand what he found so interesting.

The female surskit thought for a moment, conjuring up a 'test' for the man. Eventually she came up with one - a brilliant one! <I got one!> She said triumphantly, beaming back up at Joshua. <Okay! You have to put your head under the water and stay there for a minute and a half, and I'll go with you!> Said the water spider happily, not realizing that the human could pass out by doing this. <It'll show me how far you're willing to go for me~> She explained, clasping two of her legs together next to her head in an endearing pose.
Her male counterpart stiffened when the cat launched the blunt question at him, shivering a little. <U-um.. nothing. Sorry..> Said the shy surskit, turning his head to the side so that he was looking at the rippling water instead. He didn't have much to say, the little critter.

I mean, you don't just agree to go with a complete stranger over nothing, do you? Certainly not. But when the Surskit excitedly mentioned her terms, the already fair-skinned Joshua went deathly pale. See, there was something that he didn't usually tell anyone. He could usually avoid mentioning it, as he didn't have any friends that ever asked him to go swimming. But the boy, nineteen years of age though he was, was terrified of deep water. And drowning. So holding his breath for a minute and a half under the water was quite possibly one of the only things he was certain he could not do. Flustered, he shook his head slightly, unsure of what to say. His colorless cheeks flushed red with embarrassment, realizing how ridiculous it would sound.
Eris, who had not yet been informed of her partner's weakness, regarded him with a critical eye, like one might view a squawking coworker, or a barking child. Basically, Eris was staring at Joshua like he'd sprouted horns and gone insane. <What's your problem?> she demanded shamelessly, with absolutely no regards for his feelings.
Josh bit his lip, still blushing like mad. "I... well, I... uh, I don't really... I can't..."
<Spit it out,> she goaded impatiently, <we don't have all day, you know.>
Turning redder by the second, if it was even possible against his cherry-colored hue, Joshua's hand snaked up and messed with the back of his hair. He gave an awkward cough and glanced away, so that he couldn't see any of their faces as he awkwardly admitted, "I'm sort of, well, afraid of water. Of, like, drowning." As he'd expected, it sounded absolutely ridiculous to him.
Eris blinked. For once, the cat-like femme had nothing to say. <Afraid of...? But... that's ridiculous! Even I'm not that much of a scaredy-cat, pardon the pun!>
"I know," he muttered, still embarrassed as hell.

Surskit tilted her head to the side when the human began to look flustered, but still waited patiently for him to give some sort of response. However, what she didn't expect was his response. <Wha-wha-what?! How can you be afraid of water!?> She squeaked disbelievingly, face the very epitome of shock... for a bug Pokémon. Even her brother's visage was appalled at the man's confession. The little surskits had never met a Pokémon that didn't like water. Were all trainers like that? She clearly had to rethink her test.
<Well.. I'll give you another chance,> She offered hesitantly, biting her lip. <Okay. How about.. you bring me... 10 pieces of grass that have dew on them? That should be easy!> She said cheerfully, doing a little jig in the puddle she was floating around in.

That was what he'd been afraid of. He hated feeling worthless, weakened. Fear was a great weakness, and he was literally ashamed of himself by feeling it. "Well, ah, it's a long story," he said quickly and sheepishly, when she asked him how he was afraid of water. Actually, it was a relatively simple story, but it was certainly not one he valued talking about.
He had been a young kid, playing out in the backyard. Seeing as his father was a wealthy man, they had their own pond. He'd been fascinated by the few Pokemon (including two friendly Magikarp and a Goldeen that liked to flash her orange fins in a showy manner whenever someone passed) that lived there, and so had lingered by it a lot. And then his sister Melissa had come home from school. She was seventeen, and Joshua only eleven. With a few of her friends, she'd decided it would be funny to push her brother into the water. Unfortunately, the pond was quite deep, and he'd never learned how to swim (not wanting to disturb the Pokemon by entering the water). So he'd very nearly drowned.
He couldn't stand deep water ever since.
Joshua let out a breath of relief when she decided on another task. It was much, much simpler than the other one had been - at least for someone like him - and so he nodded and attempted a smile. "Yeah, I think I could do that," he agreed, nodding. What she wanted with ten dew-ridden stalks was beyond him, but at least he didn't have to do anything involving deep water and submergence.
Eris was still staring at him.
However, she said nothing, and when he told the Surskit's that he'd be right back and set off to find dew-infested grass, she flicked her tail curiously before following at a light trot. Though she was not speaking to him, he could hear her muttering indignantly, something like; 'afraid of... most ridiculous thing I've heard... absolutely idiotic'. He pretended not to have heard.
His mood had improved by the time he returned to the Surskit duo. "This work for you?" he inquired, speaking mainly to the cheerful femme that had requested the items, but giving a slight smile in her brother's direction as well.

The female Surskit nodded understandingly to the human's excuse. <No problem!> She squeaked cheerfully. Then the little insect watched excitedly as the human left to fulfill her odd request. When he came back, bringing with him the requested items, she scanned them with a serious gaze. <Well, they're not the best I've seen, but I'll accept them anyway!> Said the surskit excitedly, giving a smile for the trainer's sincere efforts. <Go ahead and catch me!> She goaded, hopping around in the water where she stood.
Her brother simply watched her, gaze pretty calm for a surskit whose sister was about to leave the nest and go off to see better places. He turned back to the trainer and his only words were, <Take care of her.>

However, it amused rather than irritated Joshua. Given his self-esteem issues, and his tendency to get bored and upset rather easily, having her around could be pretty good for his mood boosts. Much as he loved Eris as a partner, she could be amazingly cynical and blunt at times. He knew his partner meant well, but it was always good to have a balance.
"Alright, here goes," he agreed, giving the Surskit a smile as he pulled one of the Pokeballs from his bag and tossed it lightly, making sure that he aimed at her, rather than at her brother. Speaking of this brother, he seemed quite calm. Had he been through this with other siblings? Or was he simply the type to be nonchalant? "I will," he promised the Pokemon regardless.

The surskit watched excitedly as the human flung the sphere at her, her grin still plastered even as she vanished inside the pokeball. When it filled with her, the sphere plunged into the water where it'd hit her and hardly moved, only slightly as she trembled with excitement. In hardly a moment the sphere stopped moving and emitted a loud ping to signal capture.

The moment the soft ping indicated that the capture was complete, Joshua retrieved the Pokeball from the water - drying it lightly on his shirt - and then released his new friend, seeing as she was far from fainted, and he figured that her joyful personality would put a damper on Eris' crude remarks for the rest of the journey to Electric City.
"I think I'll call you Asteria," Joshua decided, then nodded slightly. It sounded right to him, and it fit with the theme of his other Pokemon; minus the Whismur, seeing as he wasn't allowed to keep that Pokemon in his party. "What do you think?" The cheerful Surskit was apparently in approval of his choice, for she happily bounced around where she'd landed back in the water. "But we'd better keep going; I want to reach the city before nightfall, after all." Night was still some way away, but so was the city.
"Bye!" Asteria called cheerfully to her brother.
And so the team set off once again.

If Josh listened closely, he would be able to tell that there were some major things going on. In front of him, just outside the exit, was the sound of rustling, and things being dragged. By what, or who, one didn't know unless they walked out to find out.
Overhead, bird pokemon flapped their wings and launched onto a nearby cliff. If someone really wanted to, they could go after the bird pokemon and get onto the cliff. There were plenty of footholds. But there was no guarantee that the birds aren't all pidgeys. After all, all the birds that flew overhead were Pidgeys. But, if one was curious, they could find out.
Ivestigate either scene, or exit and keep walking?

He could climb up there if he tried, Joshua noticed, but before he could make a direct decision, the sound of rustling and dragging distracted him, causing him to whip his head toward the sound. Cricking his neck slightly, he winced in pain and rubbed at it. "Ouch," he complained distastefully, frowning softly at his own stupidity.
"Slick," Eris commented with a roll of her eyes.
Ignoring her, Josh glanced back up at the cliff once more. He'd never been afraid of heights, but he wasn't sure if he could make the climb. And after all, he could always go back and check it out after he'd seen where that odd rustling sound was coming from. So he turned away from the bird Pokemon and their games and decided to instead investigate the source of the other sound. Eris was perched on his shoulder, seeming slightly intrigued, but very calm about it, and Asteria was skittering along behind, splashing playfully in any small puddles they came across.

When looking closely, one could see a aclefairy running back and forth from the bush to various trees and flowers. Why? A hoothoot was in the bush, commanding the Clefairy. <Dont forget the Oran berries!> It would occasionally yell. ::Hoothoot:: ::Clefairy::
The Clefairy didn't seem too happy about it, but she obeyed everything the owl said. She listened to everything he said, nodding all the while as the pink blur rushed around. <Yes. Yes, I found it.>

He was momentarily reminded of the strange Burmy he'd encountered, thanks to the owl Pokemon's attitude. But he quickly shook off that flashback and began to wonder what on Earth the Pokemon was doing, bossing the Clefairy around like that. Eris glanced at him and raised an eyebrow, the two exchanging a confused and odd glance. Asteria didn't seem too happy about the way the pink Pokemon was being treated, but she wasn't saying anything.
Deciding he really had nothing better to do, Joshua decided to investigate further. Stepping closer, he cleared his throat loudly and asked, "Erm, what exactly, are you doing?" He'd caught something about berries in the owl Pokemon's yell, but why couldn't the bossy little thing get them himself? Eris leaped down from his shoulder and glared distastefully; she, too, had been reminded of the Burmy, and wasn't happy about it. Asteria just watched them with an expression of mingled curiosity and confusion.

The Clefairy paused as she heard the human's loud and demanding voice, eyes glittering as she realized that he was probably going to save her from the owl's slavery. Hoothoot looked up at the human, eyes narrowing as he realized that he'd aimed the question at him. <What's it to ya?!> Said the owl sarcastically as he picked up one of the berries Clefairy gathered and stuffed the entire thing in his beak, juice spurting out in the process.
Clefairy's face fell a little. <I lost a bet,> She said in a low voice, walking toward the nearest berry orchard to pick more for her temporal boss.
