Sensibly, the Burmy could have rightfully demanded a number of things. But when it gave it's request, Joshua blinked a few times in rapid succession, completely nonplussed. "A... shrubbery...?" he echoed slowly, as if repeating the words would force the situation to make more sense. He wondered if Pokemon had their own brand of hallucinogens. Or if the Burmy was just simply insane. "As in like, a bush?" he asked, still confused.
<That's what a shrubbery is, Joshua,> Eris scorned slightly, rolling her eyes. Turning back to the Burmy, who had started to speak again, she opened her mouth to say something sarcastic and snide, but Joshua cut her off as soon as the Burmy had finished speaking.
<You->
"Shrubbery. Got it. We'll go do that now," he said quickly, silencing Eris with a determined glare, then starting off in a random direction. Eris hissed softly, glared at the Burmy for a moment, but ultimately decided to follow her trainer. <He's insane, Joshua,> she insisted. <Why are you->
Josh sighed. "Let's just get what he wants, okay? It shouldn't be that hard, and he is right. It's their home, not yours. You should be a little less crude." At this, Eris huffed slightly and pointedly ignored Joshua for several minutes as they searched for their odd quest item. She was a difficult one to please, his Glameow was.
Eventually, they found a rather interesting looking... shrub. It wasn't exactly the nicest of them, but it was certainly nice enough. Ignoring the thoughts in his head about how utterly bizarre the request had been, Joshua enlisted Eris' help (though she assisted him very grudgingly) with getting it back to the Burmy. Holding in the desire to laugh, the dark-haired trainer said, "Is this what you meant?" Eris looked at him cynically and rolled her eyes.

Burmy waited impatiently for the trainer to return with the.. 'shrubbery,' tapping one of his feet but still continuing to keep watch for other intruders. As soon as the man and his feline friend returned, the plant scanned their prize with contempt. He then looked back up at Joshua, face gloomy. <Hmph! That took far too long. I could've gotten TEN shrubberies in the time you got this.. this.... weed!> He scoffed at the thing. However, he surveyed the plant anyway.
After examining it more thoroughly, he continued his criticism. <Tch! It isn't the best I've seen, but it isn't the worst either.> He sighed as if this all meant something. Then, standing aside, he gave access to the trainer. <I'll be a softie today. But you should really take shrubbery - finding lessons, young man! And make something of yourself!> He scoffed, taking another glance at the man's shrub and looking away in slight disgust.

Patiently, though with increasing exasperation and amusement, Joshua listened to the odd Pokemon's rant. Their first few hours as partners, and he and Eris had already seen more oddness than Josh had taken in throughout his lifetime. A cheeky Whismur, a dull Slakoth and it's Buneary victim, an injured but nevertheless kind Stanler, a suspicious Psyduck, and... this. This odd Burmy. He was definitely one of character, if a little insane. Soft? Joshua thought. Ha! But he smiled pleasantly - after all, it was hard to get irritable if you refused to let such things bother you - and nodded. "Thank you."
Eris was still pointedly ignoring his presence, and had sat through the whole conversation with stony silence. He supposed she'd get over it in a few minutes, and if not, he was going to have some sucking up to do. She was a very demanding companion, but he liked her company, that was for sure. "C'mon, Eris," he said, and she jumped wordlessly onto his shoulder, careful to dig her claws in extra-hard.
Quietly, once they'd traveled some distance out of hearing range, he said, "If I'd yelled, or freaked out, like you did, Eris; we'd never have been allowed in."
<Hmph!>

When the foreign human entered their territory, several pokemon had looked out from their homes and watched the trainer as he strolled through. Many of them were friendly, and most hadn't even had contact with humans, as they had been inside this secret place their whole lives. Some were curious about the trainer, and began to approach him, but were too shy to completely close the distance towards him.
Then, finally, a challenger approached - what looked to be a pudgy little tree. The young Bonsly, nearly just a few months old but hardened from training with his brothers and sisters, looked up at the trainer with an outgoing gaze. <Hi! Welcome to our home! I was wondering if you could capture me and take me to faraway places~!> Squeaked the little tree, shaking his fake leaves in anticipation. There seemed to be an angry outcry from the Bonsly's parent, but it was stifled by another. Ignoring the outburst, the little tree-thing continued. <My parents don't want me to leave, but I reaaally wanna see what's outside...> Said the young tree childishly. <So, if you could battle me and catch me, can I pleasee come with you?> Finished the little rock-type, beady eyes pinned straight on the trainer in front of him.

This was a fascinating place, and it seemed that Eris had forgotten her anger toward him as she craned her neck a little, stretching out on his shoulder to glance around her. The cat-like Pokémon had of course never been outside of the lab until Joshua had become her trainer, but this was still much more interesting than the simplicity of route one had been. The Pokémon in this rare sanctuary seemed curious about them, and even Eris forgot her usual haughty attitude toward anything that wasn't her trainer.
They hadn't gone too far when a small, tree-like Pokémon approached them. Joshua stopped in his stride to listen to what it had to say. It seemed to be quite the cheerful little Pokemon, and Josh grinned slightly. A desire to travel wasn't a rare one, and he understood it himself. He heard the yelling, and glanced around slightly in surprise, but nodded when the small Pokémon explained. "I had the same problem," he admitted with a chuckle. "Of course you can."
Eris jumped down lightly from his shoulder. According to his Pokedex, Bonsly was a rock-type Pokémon. As long as it didn't know any fighting moves, he figured she'd be alright, but he kept the Revive and the extra Potion in mind just in case. "Eris, Fake Out!"
Eris stalked close to the Bonsly and struck, much as they had upon starting the fight with the Psyduck.

Bonsly cheered excitedly when the human accepted his request, then remembered that he was about to battle him and went into a battle-ready position, demeanor changing from childish to fierce in a moment. Soon the cat was approaching him, using an odd move the likes of which he hadn't heard before.
However, it didn't seem to matter, as Bonsly seemed rooted to the ground during the feline's attack. As she struck out towards him, he felt a pain against his belly. His face took on a surprised look as he was sent skidding backward, breath sent out of him. Unable to move from the shock of the odd move, the Bonsly knelt and attempted to catch his breath rather than retaliate.

The tree Pokemon's demeanor sure could change fast! It seemed cheerful for a moment, but it's attitude turned fierce when Joshua accepted it's challenge. "Great move, Eris," Josh complimented, when she made the rock-type flinch. That would give them an advantage of an extra turn, at least. "Try Scratch this time!" he commanded.
She was still irritated with him about earlier, but was not spiteful enough that she would ignore commands in a battle. The navy-colored Pokémon extended her claws in a bright flash of ivory as she slashed them through the air in the direction of her opponent. If she won this battle for them, they would be teammates in the future, but for now, they were opponents, and she was going to go all out!

The young tree regained his senses after a little bit, just as the feisty feline was approaching him with her intimidating claws, and thus was able to unroot himself from the ground he was flinched upon. Doing a quick jump to the right was all his brain would tell him to do, and it was thus what he did - though it was pretty clumsy for a dodge. Still, it served its purpose.
Turning over on the ground, the tree, still laying on his side, did an odd thing; he copied the feline's movements and extended his branches in a bright flash of green as he flashed them through the air in the direction of his opponent. {{ooc/ teehee.}}

<Drat!> Eris hissed to herself as her claws scored through empty air, her attack having narrowly missed her opponent. However clumsy the dodge had been, she'd still missed, and that didn't make for a very happy feline.
It's branches scored through the air and slashed at her, catching her off-guard for a moment; she hadn't been aware that trees could use a move such as scratch. "I think it must have copycat!" Joshua informed his Pokemon, after thinking for a moment. "It can use anything you do; so be careful!"
Eris gave an indignant snort. That hardly seemed fair! She'd been born with that move, and that Pokemon had basically stolen it from her! Still, she couldn't get too distracted, they were in the middle of a fight. Knowing what Josh would expect, she lunged a second time and attempted to open a gash in the Bonsly's bark.

This time the Bonsly braced himself for pain as the cat extended her claws at his body - however, pain wasn't necessarily what he felt as the sharp nails scraped down his side. All along he thought that he himself was a tree, but hearing the noise the claws generated as they came in contact with his body caused him to bear realization: he was a rock, not a tree. His friends had told him that he was a rock. Heck, his parents told him that he was made of rock. But he hadn't believed any of them until this very moment. His heart lamented at that moment. But he soon remembered that he was in a battle - he couldn't let something like this affect him!
Hopping back onto his two little feet, the tree turned back towards the Glameow and performed yet another Copycat. Focusing on the cat's every move, he conducted his scratch the way she did hers - he lunged a second time and attempted to open a gash in the feline's blue fur.

No way I'm falling for that again! Eris thought indignantly to herself, leaping out of the rock-type's way and landing lightly at Joshua's feet. She lashed her elegant tail once in a sort of a challenge, then glanced up at her trainer. Angry with him as she was, she needed to know whether to change tactics or not, after all.
"He's a rock-type Pokemon," Joshua said, albeit pointing out the obvious in order to lead up to his next tip, "Your normal-type moves do less damage to him than they would to anyone else. Try using Assurance this time!" Man, was he ever glad that Glameow had the egg move when he'd recieved her! It had helped them out a lot.
Eris nodded swiftly, executing the move as planned.

Bonsly ignored the fact that he'd just missed the cat with his scratchy branches and instead listened to the human's confirmation, heart sinking steadily. How lamentable - he'd never become a beautiful, elegant plant waving in the wind; he'd simply be a rock.. being all solid and hard on the ground. And to think his very appearance was a pretender of plants, taunting him with their wondrous beauty..! It made his heart feel ill. But he digressed.
Now the cat was approaching the rock-hard Bonsly with a new sort of attack. It was odd - the feline approached him and executed the move, which hurt a lot but.. somehow felt uplifting in a way. He ignored the pain and turned towards the blue - colored kitten, using Copycat once more. He closed the distance between he and the cat and executed the attack as she did.

Eris felt the pain of her own move directed back at her, and it only increased her fury. She did not like the Copycat move. Having her own attacks used against her certainly wasn't fun! "Again, Eris, quickly!" Joshua urged, and the navy-furred femme shook off her increasing rage and faced her opponent, dealing the move a second time. Didn't the Bonsly know any move save for Copycat? If he didn't, they were certainly going to have to work on that when he joined them! Because, of course being full of herself, Eris was adamant that she wasn't going to lose in this battle.
Joshua, however, was impressed with the little rock-tree's determination. And of course, having waited so long to break free from his own life and set out on his journey, he had respect for the little Pokemon's decision. Eris was a hard one to get along with, but it would be worth the risk of keeping the two of them together in his team. He was yet to decide whether or not to challenge Eris' demand that he get rid of Whismur's pokeball in a PC when they reached Electric City.
Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't.
For now, they had a fight to finish!

Bonsly braced himself for the cat's repeat attack, feeling the power of it yet again as the pain ran through his body. This time, she'd managed to land the attack on a particularly sensitive spot, resulting in critical damage to the little tree-like pokemon's body. He jumped back and retaliated with the same move he'd been using over and over, advancing back towards the kitten with an Assurance with his own.

Yet again, she was hit by the power of the dark attack. She had been expecting it, but had not had the time to leap out of the Bonsly's way, instead bracing herself to prevent the attack becoming critical. While he was still within range, she acted without guidance and slashed out with her claws, a flash of brightest ivory coloring the air. If she got her way, those pearly white claws would be stained with red... or, ah, whatever color they turned when they dug through the rock-like Pokemon.
Joshua didn't object to Eris' reasoning behind the scratch attack, but rather observed the two Pokemon with an expression between interest and intense pride for his own partner's skills.

Bonsly realized he'd made himself vulnerable to the cat's next attack, consisting of a scratch. And even if he wasn't so close to her to begin with, he probably would've been hit by the scratch anyway - he was expecting her to use Assurance yet again, seeing that it was a more effective attack. If the feline's goal was to cause the Bonsly to become unsure of what to expect, she was successful in reaching it.
Bonsly felt the claws rake down his tough skin and winced a little, though it wasn't too bad. The tree lookalike stayed where he was near the cat and retaliated once more, using Copycat once again to repeat her move.. once again. He mimiced her scratch, moving his branch-like appendages to strike across her blue hide.

Eris had pretty much deduced that Copycat was, indeed, the Bonsly's only move. So after using scratch, she'd expected the retaliation. Due to this, she managed to dodge the worst of the blow, but his branches still managed to graze her flank and cause a stinging pain similar to a paper cut; more irritating and distracting than it was detrimental, really. She tried to put the stinging throbs to the back of her mind.
Now, seeing as she'd thrown him off of what to expect, she was able to return to her normal tactic. Figuring her trainer would have no objection - and, honestly not caring if Joshua objected or not - she bunched her muscles and lunged at the Bonsly, with yet another Assurance attack.

This time Bonsly was able to weave quickly out of the way of the feline's Assurance, landing surprisingly gracefully to the side of where he'd been standing. He looked back and took advantage of the cat's close range and vulnerability; once again he used Copycat and mimiced the feline's attack. Lunging at the Glameow, he angled his head so that the scratchy green appendages were aimed straight at her side.

Eris snarled in pain, scrambling away from the Bonsly before he could do any more damage and shaking out her fur slightly. A few drops of blood spattered on the ground, and Josh winced slightly, hating to see his Pokemon in so much pain. But Eris was still a determined little cat, and she had only just caught her balance and composure when she was lunging again, using Assurance another time. Sheer, stubborn determination was blocking out the need to lie down and rest, now. Adrenaline was coursing through her veins. It didn't make her any stronger, just lessened the chance that she would give up before she was beat. Not that she would have anyways. Eris was the type of Pokemon that would fight until her lungs gave out and she couldn't make another step.
"Hang in there!" Josh encouraged, still a little concerned about her injuries. She didn't speak, but just nodded once, expression strained with concentration.

The Bonsly panted in exhaustion when he'd landed the copycatted attack one the cat, stumbling backwards himself. Pure fatigue aided his desire to simply give up, but he was too in the game for that. Looking up he saw the feline advancing towards him once more with Assurance - he turned to the left to begin to dodge it, but this only caused him to leave his whole left side open to Eris' attack. He felt the pain of her assault shoot all through his tired body, hit critically, and descended without a sound to the ground. Eyes, half-lidded, fell regardless of his attempts to keep them open.
