After exiting the lab and heading down the indicated route, Joshua gave pause and released the Pokémon from it's ball. Though he'd interacted with a Glameow once before when it had wandered through his backyard, there was a special feeling about this one. His partner, his companion, those things meant something to him. A light, and rather rare, smile touched his features. The cat-like Pokémon was actually quite adorable, not that he'd say that to anyone but himself (and perhaps her, as well).
Glameow glanced at Joshua, her expression a mixture of interest and challenge, as if she were sizing him up. He immediately got the impression that she would be quite judgmental. Let's hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew, the dark-haired youth thought anxiously. There was a few moments silence. At last, Glameow purred slightly. <You seem to be a very interesting person,> she observed after another, much briefer pause. Taking this to be an approval, Joshua exhaled in relief and smiled slightly. "You need a name," he realized, then asked, "Mind if I call you Eris?"
The Glameow considered this for a moment, then flicked her coiled tail and dipped her head. <That would be acceptable,> she meowed in approval.
With approval gained and nothing left to do but move ahead, Joshua allowed Eris to remain outside of her pokeball as they started down the trail, chattering absentmindedly about mundane things, and simply getting to know one another. It occurred to the new trainer that there would be wild Pokémon and perhaps other trainers about, but he figured that they'd be alright, provided he remained vigilant.

A Whismur had seen the trainer and Glameow as they had.. somewhat of a conversation. Snickering naughtily, the little pig decided to target these two for her first daily trolling bothering. Oh, how he loved to be annoying - seeing the looks on his target's faces was simply a delight to him.
Weaving his way through the trees, the pig followed silently next to the trainer and his kitten pokemon, thinking up ways of how to annoy them the best. Well, the Glameow padding next to him had large ears - perhaps he could grace them with a song from his heart. At the thought, the little pig gave an inaudible snickering.
Finally, when he'd gotten a little past the trainer and cat, he hopped out of the bushes and cleared his throat. <Shall I perform for you?> Asked the wild Whismur, a sarcastic grin adorning his features. Hastily, he brought his two arms up and raised his voice, the pitch so high that it was damaging to humans' and pokemons' ears alike. Huge flocks of pidgeys and spearows left the trees that they occupied in order to escape that horrible sound.

Joshua had just finished telling Eris about why he'd set out on his journey. Suddenly, and without much warning, a Whismur burst from the bushes in front of them. Eris narrowed her eyes in distaste, and Joshua stopped abruptly, making sure that he didn't run into the Pokémon. After all, this was possibly near it's home, so the Pokémon had more right to be here than he did.
Any feelings he had of kindness and courtesy vanished, however, a couple of seconds later. "Agh!" he cried as the Whismur started up an awful screeching, covering his ears with his palms and wincing in pain. Shaking his head slightly to clear it, he glanced at Eris -- who was growling hostilely with her ears flattened to her skull, obviously in similar irritation about the noise -- and commanded, "Eris, use Scratch!"
The cat-like Pokémon gave a swift nod. She rushed the Whismur, then jumped out of the way while flicking out her claws and slashing at the other Pokémon angrily. Landing lightly on her feet, she lashed her coiled tail and narrowed her eyes, ready for a fight. While finicky and proud in personality, she was also fierce and protective, and no one interrupted them without her approval!

The Whismur felt satisfaction as the human and Glameow reacted badly to his loud voice. The human's expression was especially pleasing to the sadistic pig. However, he was not prepared for the cat's counter attack; her claws opened a gash in the pig's side, spilling a bit of blood. Whismur hopped away in reaction to the pain, but still managed to keep the high note.
As Whismur continued to screech the terrible noise, more and more pokemon hid in their burrows and habitats to escape the cruel ear-raping sound. Nothing could escape the little pig's horrid uproar, which was why they weren't a popular pokemon among the citizens of Route 1.

The continuous screeching was both an awful noise and a significant distraction. However, it was Josh who was giving the orders in this battle, and so he knew he had to remain focused if he was going to direct them toward a win. Eris was a surprisingly fierce Glameow, something he hadn't been expecting when he'd first observed her fickle and finicky nature. "Scratch!" he called again. Assurance would have worked better in combination with a move like poison sting or leech seed, but Eris knew nothing of the sort. Fake Out was no longer an option, as Whismur had gotten the jump on them.
Though her ears were ringing from the horrid screeching that Whismur was making, Eris nodded in a determined manner when she picked up Josh's command over the din. <Certainly,> she hissed, lunging and swiping a second time. She put even more effort behind the attack this time, annoyed by the pain that the battle was causing her sensitive ears. Hissing as she landed, Eris growled, <How's that for performing?> intending a sarcastic reply to the other Pokemon's original greeting.

Whismur, paying more attention to the cat's movements this time, was able to dodge her fierce-looking claws with relative ease. As he jumped backwards from the swipe of the cat's paw, he called back, <It could use some work.> He ended the vile noise, having run out of air to proclaim it. His lungs and throat ached a bit from crying out for so long. Pokemon throughout the Route seemed to sigh in unison at the sweet silence they'd taken for granted before.
The piglet now readied himself to assault the cat differently - with an attack he'd known ever since he was a wee piglet. In fact, he and his brethren had often battled each other using the very move he was about to use. Running at the Glameow, he raised one of his paws and prepared to pound the cat's side.

Eris said nothing in reply, simply lashed her tail with increasing ferocity. This kitten had a temper like no other, and it was starting to show. Joshua didn't know whether to be amused by her frustration or concerned for her health. His ears were still ringing as the noise died down, but he wasn't sure how it had affected his Pokemon. Still, the battle wasn't won yet. In fact, far from it, seeing as Eris had missed her last strike. "Don't worry about it!" Joshua called encouragingly, not wanting her to falter in the face of her anger. "Just try again!"
So relieved was she that the Whismur had shut it's mouth, Eris was easily able to gather up her muscles and leap out of the way of the oncoming attack. Hmph! Eris thought stubbornly as she stalked around her opponent, deciding where it would be best to try and strike him. Easy for him to say! He's not the one fighting! She was grateful for his apparent concern, catching his expression, but she was also a very haughty individual. Now, the battle. Maybe if she could aim for the already inflicted wounds...
Josh had a sudden thought. What if Whismur is expecting Scratch again? Hmm, that wouldn't do. Changing tactic, he decided, "Assurance!"
Though she didn't quite understand Joshua's reasoning, he was the trainer, so Eris shrugged off her momentary surprise and executed the move with as much determination as she could muster despite her growing rage.

Whismur had been expecting a swipe of the cat's paws, so when he saw the feline approaching he swerved quickly - however, since she was using a different attack, this tactic didn't help him much. As the attack connected with the piglet's hide, he let out a squeal of agony. He'd never felt such an odd-feeling move before.
However, in the split-second he had, he decided to take advantage of how close to him the cat was. She was practically chasing him down in that instant, after all. Lashing out with his paw, the petite pig aimed for a pound on the navy blue cat's flank.

"Haha, yes!" Joshua called triumphantly as the change in tactic worked out well for them. "It worked! Nice move, Eris!"
Eris, proud of the successful attack, let out a slight purr. <Why, thank you.> However, in her vanity, she forgot to be careful to move out of the Whismur's way, and so the pound attack struck her with painful accuracy, and she screeched in pain as she was knocked back slightly by the force of it at such a close range. <You'll pay for that!> Eris hissed angrily at the other Pokemon, getting back to her feet. Her proud features were laced with the pain, but she wasn't going to go down that easy.
How much hit points had she lost? Joshua wondered whether or not to use any of the items he'd recieved earlier, but decided against it. She's tough, he told himself, and that she was. A vicious and stubborn cat. She can win this. Even if it was only their first battle together, Joshua was confident in Eris' abilities already.
Assurance dealt less damage, thanks to the fact that it had not been used in its most useful way, so he decided to revert back to their original tactic. "Alright, Eris! Scratch!"
The navy-colored cat Pokémon hissed and lunged in response, aiming for the earlier-dealt injury for added effect.

The piglet was acting quite smug that his previous attack had hit. He was watching the feline carefully, knowing that the injury was gradually slowing him down. It saw the glameow lunch for him and he tried to dodge, but wasn't quite fast enough and got another nasty gash, a bit lower than the previous one.
In quite a bit of pain, he let out a large cry, practically shrieking. The whismur was not too satisfied with how this battle was turning out and used another uproar, hoping that the noise will make his opponent falter.

Having expected another pound attack, both trainer and Pokémon were thrown off by their own original tactic, the return of a move after the use of another. Joshua cursed colorfully and plugged his ears again, where Eris winced in pain as the awful sound grated against her sensitive hearing. A little thrown off, the kitten Pokémon was unsure of what to do next, and threw a desperate glance at her trainer for guidance. <Joshua,> she hissed, <advice would be a really nice touch, you know.>
"Huh? Oh, sorry!" He had been so fixated on blocking out the sound that he'd almost forgotten the battle. Feeling bad, he summed up the battle quickly. The Whismur, just like Eris, seemed to be in pain. But they had the advantage of his tactics, and so if they were especially careful, they might be able to win this battle yet. "Don't give up, Eris!" he said faithfully. "Just push yourself a little more this time! Scratch!"
Biting back a bitter retort, Eris gathered up her strength and attacked again. This lunge was a little less coordinated and precise as the last had been, due to her injury, but she was still giving it her best. <You're going down, piggy,> she sneered at the Whismur.

Whismur continued to emit the annoying screeching noise, which caused other wild Pokémon in the area to become angry and have fits. They added their own voices into the mix, shouting various insults at the Whismur who they knew was the source of the cry. These included variations of <Shut up!!> and <Keep it down already, I'm trying to sleep!> The clashing of all these shouts made for a very ugly-sounding noise. The piglet was pleased that he was able to ignore his own, deafening voice.
Over the sound of the Uproar, he heard the call that the trainer gave to the Glameow. From this he was prepared - or so he thought. The pain of the two wounds on his side was getting to him, and his sluggish movements allowed for the feline's claws to shred yet another gash across the other two. The horrible pain caused Whismur to raise the volume of his outcry even louder. He jumped sideways from the cat's direction and rested there for a few moments, regaining his composure. He could feel himself losing consciousness rapidly, but so too was the cat by the looks of it. He had only to survive longer than her and be the victor.
The piglet continued his deafening cry, having enough air in him to continue it for the turn.

Much as he was angry that it had attacked without provocation, Joshua couldn't help but feel a bit of respect for the Whismur's resilient, stubborn refusal to give up and pass out. But unfortunately for the wild Pokemon, Eris had an advantage that he did not. A trainer, and not to mention one who'd been given a few key items before setting out on his journey. Reaching into his bag, Joshua decided to sacrifice this turn to use an item on Eris, so that she didn't give up and faint.

Just as she thought she had been put through enough, and was about to shake her head and give in to the screeching noises of her opponent, Joshua used an item. Almost fully healed in terms of hit-points, the small kitten felt the immediate relief from her exhaustion, and she shook it off and faced the Whismur again. This time, she wasn't going to go down so easily. <Take your best shot, pig.>

Whismur's eyes narrowed when he saw the human take out a healing potion and remove all of his efforts in just a few sprays. That... that cheater! The piglet was highly displeased at this action, and was even further determined to beat down this challenger. However, with his vision slightly blurred and legs hardly able to steady him, it would be a challenge to even last another attack.
The piglet's voice finally lowered down to nothing, and he knelt for a few moments to catch his breath. Though he hated to say it, this feline was the real deal. He decided he was pleased to have found an opponent that matched him in power. Straightening back up, the pink pokemon prepared to execute his next move - you guessed it, another pound. This time, he planned to fake the cat out. As he advanced towards his foe, he pretended he was going for the feline's chest but quickly jumped to the side of her and attempted to pound her front leg.

When the pig Pokémon started to rush toward her, Eris fell for it's trap. Assuming that it was going to aim for her chest, she prepared to either leap over or duck under her assailant, but was caught off guard by the change in tactic and struck in the paw by the attack. She hissed her pain through gritted teeth, but otherwise showed no reaction, determined to make Josh proud of her in this battle. New partners they may have been, but she felt fiercely close to him already, and to lose their first battle would be incredibly pathetic, at least in Eris' opinion.
So, pushing the pain to the back of her mind, the kittenish Pokémon took advantage of the momentary close range with her opponent. Without even waiting for Joshua's command, she snarled fiercely in challenge and flicked out her claws, slashing them through the air, not aiming for any part of the Whismur in particular, just aiming to take it down and end this once and for all.
Surprised by the ferocity of the snarl, but also amused and a little proud of her initiative, Joshua said nothing, just watched curiously to see what would happen.

Whismur attempted to dodge the close-range attack he had anticipated, but his already slow speeds were his curse. Though he managed to avoid some of her swipe, she'd still managed to gouge a deep cut through the paw he'd used to pound her. Sudden pain caused the pig to cry out in pain even before he descended ungracefully to the ground, rolling for a few moments until he landed, a light coat of dirt encrusted on his pink hide.
The piglet remembered distinctly that he was in the battle, but his conscience told him he'd lost and must accept his defeat gracefully. Even still, he attempted to regain his foothold on the ground, using his unwounded paw to help him, but to no avail - his body's energy had been spent. Whismur's last memory of the battle was the blue sky and the feeling of his eyelids closing against his will.

A relieved and triumphant grin spread across Joshua's fierce features as he realized that their opponent had fainted. "Alright!" he cheered, basking momentarily in their first victory as a team. Eris purred slightly and daintily picked her way around her opponents unconscious form to stand by Joshua's side. Noticing his contemplative expression, the cat-like Pokemon gave him a skeptical look. <Surely you aren't thinking of capturing that... that... thing?> It had put up a good fight, and fair was fair, but Eris had taken a disliking to the Whismur since the moment it had stepped across their path. <Hmph!> the Glameow continued, when she recieved no answer. <Don't expect me to cooperate with it, if you do!> She had just felt accepted by her partner, and he was already thinking of expanding their team? Ridiculous!
With a sigh, Joshua smiled slightly. "Tell you what," he reasoned. "Since you're my first partner, I'll trust your judgment. But even if it doesn't travel with us, we could do with expanding the Pokedex." He was trying to think ahead, toward the future. They might regret leaving this chance later. He didn't really see it of much importance, but he didn't have much experience yet. "Come on," he urged, when she still looked doubtful. "Trust me on this one?" It was posed as a question. If Eris was truly adamant that they move on without capturing the other Pokemon, he would accept this and continue without using a Pokeball.
She lifted her chin somewhat defiantly. However, after a long moment, she twitched her nose and dipped her navy-colored head gracefully. <Very well,> she accepted, retaining her dignity. Then, with a slightly cheeky tone, she added, <But you better keep your word. PC, first chance you get. Mhm?>
Joshua couldn't help but laugh, already retrieving one of the balls from his bag. "You got it," he assured her, then tossed the red and white sphere toward the downed Whismur.

The duo-colored sphere crashed against the unconscious Whismur's unwounded side, activating and swallowing the piglet inside. Having consumed its target, the pokeball descended to the floor and immediately began to shake violently. The piglet didn't like the concept of being under the control with two of his victims, who were possibly out for revenge after what he'd done to them. However, even with the last of his strength the piglet wasn't able to break out of the sphere. Sighing bitterly to himself, the pig resigned himself to his fate. The sphere finally came to a complete stop and emitted a shrill noise to indicate a successful capture.

Eris padded over to the now-still sphere and prodded it distastefully with a paw before pointedly ignoring it. Joshua chuckled at her odd mannerisms before striding over and picking up the pokeball, clipping it to the belt where Eris' own unoccupied ball was located. She still seemed a bit doubtful of his decision, but at least she had agreed to it. They had the potential to be great partners, provided they could learn to step lightly around the others flaws and weaknesses. Lord knows I've got plenty of those, Josh thought, a brief flash of self-consciousness plaguing him. But no; this was supposed to be a good moment! He couldn't let his low self-esteem drag him down already!
"Let's keep going!" he suggested cheerfully, already starting forward once again. Eris regarded him with an odd expression, almost as if she sensed the partially faked enthusiasm, then shrugged it off and bounded a few paces to catch up before falling into step beside him at an easy lope. <That was interesting,> she remarked, after a brief silence. <If that was our first battle, who knows what we'll run into next?>
Josh contemplated that for a moment. "Do we even want to know?" he laughed. But his tone was light, and he was obviously joking. His good mood was back, at least.

Peeeeewww. An obtrusive odor wavered through the once fresh forest air, making several of the nearby wild Pokemon cover their noses in disgust. It had the harsh scent of garbage; several fish skins, the scent of rotten eggs, and spoiled milk, all rolled into one musty scent. You would've thought that the Pokemon that had it would've taken some notice, but instead it was parading down the dirt road as if it had accomplished something great.
<Oh, hello miss.> He gave a pleased grin towards the Glameow as he happened to cross paths with her and her trainer. She had a nice gloss to her fur, which seemed to sparkle in the sun. He thought that she was absolutely gorgeous, actually.
<How would you like to go out to eat with me?> The Zigzagoon asked, his voice not quivering in the slightest. He was bold, which was surprising.
