Eris felt a flash of pain as his claws caught her shoulder and she fell back slightly, but it didn't put a damper on her style for very long. She was strong yet, and she'd gained a lot of confidence in her ability when she had Josh had combined their skills as fighter and tactician to defeat Whismur earlier. She quickly scrambled away from the Psyduck before he could land another blow at close range, then flicked her coiled tail toward her trainer to signal that she was awaiting his orders.
"Counter it, Eris!" Joshua urged. "Scratch!"
True to the command, the cat-like Pokemon lunged for her prey and repeated the move he'd just used on her, though she figured it was much more graceful when she did it than when the Psyduck had attempted. Though of course, this was just Eris' own opinion, and the kittenish diva always placed herself at a higher value than all others. Except perhaps Joshua. He was... equal. Neither better nor worse than her.

Psyduck, after successfully landing the scratch on the blue kitten, jumped away as well - he'd expected the cat to lash out to take advantage of the close range. He landed, watching the cat as her trainer gave the command to retaliate. This time, she zoned in with a scratch of her own. Psyduck had guessed at the move she was going to use, and he sidestepped it. Taking advantage of the small opportunity, he reached out with his claw to rake across the cat's side.

The duck Pokemon managed to dodge her attack and land a blow of his own, raking his claws down her side this time. With a furious hiss of pain, Eris leaped away from him before he could attack her yet again. She pushed the pain to the back of her mind and waited. "Assurance!" The duck was not poisoned, burned, or otherwise afflicted with a damage-dealing move over time, but their tactic had worked before. So Eris bunched her shoulders and threw herself at him as if she was going to tackle him, hoping to land this hit, as they'd missed the last time.

Psyduck stayed put where he was before, bracing himself for the kitten's next attack. He'd never heard of such an attack before and was baffled at what to expect. Thus, he stayed where he was and allowed the cat to execute the attack. The pain of the move made the duck screech horribly; well, at least now he knew what to expect.
He rushed towards his cat-like opponent once more, raising his arm to claw her side. How the duck wished he could learn how to use Water Gun! - but he was still in training to learn. For now, he would be like a broken record, constantly using Scratch and Scratch again in battle. The thought made an emotional lump appear in his throat as he executed the attack.

Psyduck was being rather repetitive in his moves, and both Eris and Joshua took notice of this. The cat-like Pokemon dodged this time with ease, landing lightly on her paws. Meanwhile, Josh thought about how they could use this to their advantage. "You know what to expect now, Eris," he told her, "so try and avoid letting him hit you, as much as possible!"
She might have made a sarcastic retort, but Eris was already busy, lunging toward her opponent with outstretched claws before Joshua could tell her to do so, hoping the lack of pre-given order would catch the duck by surprise, enough to allow her to land the blow.

Psyduck gave a curse-like quack as the cat easily dodged his claws. He needed to conjure up a new plan. Seeing that his elegant opponent was already reaching out to scratch him, he ducked and rolled to the side to avoid most of the attack - but felt the sharp claws graze his leg and leave a light scratch that stung annoyingly. Turning quickly, he wagged his tail in the feline's direction - then, standing up once more, the sunshine-colored fowl scrambled towards the cat and prepared to scratch her once more.

Instinct kicked in; the moment the yellow duck Pokemon started to wag it's feathered tail in her direction, Eris was distracted. Joshua called out a warning, but it was already to late to dodge the attack fully, so she only managed to just avoid a critical hit by bracing herself for the blow. Shaking it off, Eris quickly countered with a scratch attack of her own.
The duck Pokemon was a lot more resilient than Joshua had expected, and he had respect for that. However, he was also keeping careful watch over his Glameow. Should she falter in her step, or start to prove too weak for battle, he might have to call her back, or risk using another one of their Potions. But not yet. She still had a bit of fight left in her, he could see that.

Psyduck had failed to anticipate a counter attack this time, and this in turn caused him to fail in dodging the cat's sharp claws. They raked across his cheek this time, making a deep gash that caused critical damage to the duckling. Psyduck gave a shrill quack of pain as a few drops of blood spilt onto the ground, but he had to keep going. He could feel his consciousness steadily leaving him.
Not willing to jump back, he risked another counterattack by quickly aiming a scratch at the kitten. He wasn't careful to anticipate a possible retaliation on her side. The pain had taken away most of his senses.

A critical hit! Joshua could tell that Eris had landed one, because of the obvious pain that the Psyduck was in. He felt kind of bad, as he hadn't wanted to harm the brightly colored Pokemon, but it was a battle, so there was damage being dealt to both sides. Eris had already suffered several wounds herself, after all. You wouldn't know she was in pain to look at her; that stubborn cat wouldn't show weakness unless she absolutely had to.
The Psyduck was weakening, but he still managed to land another blow. Still, the close range and his weakness meant that his likeliness to dodge her attacks had dropped. "Scratch!" Joshua called, and she was already executing the move, her sharp ivories flicking outward as she raked her paw through the air.

The Psyduck was in no condition to move out of the way of the sharp claws flying towards it now. Instead it raised his webbed flippers over it's face in hopes to not take a blow to the face. The duck Pokémon made no attempt to counter it, it was much too weak and didn't have the energy to continue with such a powerful kitty. <You.... Win... I see my defeat.>
It coughed out between wheezy breaths. <Stantler here will tell you the way.> The stag, who had been watching the battle nodded. <I must first tell you that any attempt to harm the homes of the Pokémon there or to purposely hurt the Pokémon themselves will result in more then just Psyduck's rebuttal.> The stag Pokémon spoke to Joshua before turning towards the duck Pokémon. The two had a whispered conversation and if ease dropped on one would hear just the common worried conversation. "Are you okay?" "Do you need anything?" When the stag turned her attention back to Joshua, it nodded once more. <Listen, and I will tell you the way.> (All Pokémon who participated gain a level)

Joshua sighed in relief when the battle came to an end. "Are you feeling alright, Eris?" he asked his Pokemon, who was panting heavily and bleeding from a couple of the scratches. "Here." Now that the battle was finished, and he didn't have to risk using a turn to do so, he pulled out another one of the Potions from the bag and used it on her, in hopes to ease her pain a little and help her recover from the injuries.
::potion:: x 1 (removed from inventory)
<You didn't have to do that,> Eris remarked stubbornly, but the glint of relief in her gaze told him that she was just being difficult as usual. Then, as if the difficulty of it matched swallowing cinnamon, she glanced at him and nodded her thanks. Proud and vain, she didn't like doing such things, but even Eris would give thanks where it was due (most of the time).
But his Pokemon wasn't the only one who'd been hurt in the battle. Glancing at the Psyduck, Joshua's gray eyes were dark with concern. "Are you alright?" he asked the bright yellow duck Pokemon, tilting his head very slightly. The injuries looked deep where Eris had landed the critical hit. "Do you need any help?"
He glanced at the Stanler and dipped his head once to show that he was listening, but he was also worried about the Psyduck.

Psyduck lifted his head to look up at Joshua, pupil focused on the boy that decided to care for him regardless of his challenge. <You are so kind to care. But I'll be fine.> Said the duck, coughing a bit from exhaustion. <You can go. Don't worry about me...> He said, then his head lolled to the side and his eye closed. His body didn't have enough energy to endure the pain of such a deep gash.
Stantler's eye widened at the sight of the psyduck's fainting. <I wish I could help him, but I have a wound of my own..> She said, resting her head on the dirt once more. Then she remembered that she had something to tell Joshua. <Regardless, I will tell you how to reach the area I mentioned.> The glint in her eyes was serious. <It is to the left of where you currently are. Walk straight, then when you reach a rock covered with moss turn right. Then you will come across what looks like a wall of thorns; ignore how it looks and crawl on your knees through the vines underneath. Those are simply disguises. That is the one I am speaking of. Then tell them Stantler sent you.> She explained.

Though he really did wish there was something else he was able to do, nothing came to mind, and so Joshua nodded slightly to the duck's words. "I hope you make a quick recovery," he said earnestly, a troubled frown gracing his sharp features as the Psyduck fell unconscious. He sincerely hoped that no Pokemon like the arrogant Slakoth from earlier took advantage of the duck's weakness and attacked.
He nodded slightly to the Stanler's words. "Do you know where your herd went?" he asked her. It would certainly suck if she got lost after she was able to travel again. He hated the idea of leaving her here, as well. But sometimes, life just sucked, and you didn't have a choice. He'd learned that time and time again, growing up. Life sure knew how to be a pain in the behind.
He listened to the explanation; as did Eris. Left until a mossy rock, then right until a wall of thorns. Then under. The directions seemed simple enough that he figured he wouldn't get lost. "Thank you," Joshua said sincerely. "And I hope you can find your way back to the others."

The Stantler looked at Joshua with a smile. <My herd was heading back to the grazing clearing south of here. When my leg feels better I will meet with them again there. If they have moved on then I'll wait there. I'll be fine, but thank you for your concern.>
She looked silently now towards the direction her herd was going, a longing in her eyes to be able to join them. When the trainer spoke again she couldn't help out a simple laugh though it might sound odd to the boy, coming from a pokemon. <I will. Now go on before you forget the directions. If you're lost I can't help you find your way out.> Glancing down at her hurt leg and ankle she attempted to move it, to investigate it's state, but stopped soon after. A sharp pain had shot through the leg and she wasn't about to push her luck.

He felt a little more at ease, knowing that the Stanler was aware of the herds location. At least if she knew where to find them, then he wouldn't have to be plagued with mental images of her lost and wandering alone through the route. Perhaps a little overdramatic, but still. It was good, either way. "I won't forget," he promised her with a slight chuckle. "Thanks again."
Eris glanced up at him. <Are we going to move now, or are you waiting until you turn to stone?> she inquired sarcastically, flicking her tail with impatience.
Josh laughed at her. "Yeah, yeah, okay, we'll get moving," he promised. She bunched her muscles and leaped onto his shoulder, which alarmed him a little less than it had the last time, and so her weight didn't seem as heavy.
Reviewing the directions in his head, Joshua headed to the left. Soon, the path where they'd left the Stanler and Psyduck behind was out of sight, and he felt slightly unnerved by the slithering, rustling sounds in the bushes, unable to see what was coming from which direction. However, he was able to locate the moss-covered rock that had been mentioned, and he turned in the direction he was almost sure was 'right'. Sure enough, they found themselves facing a wall of thorns.
"Here goes nothing," Joshua said, nervous and excited at the same time. Eris jumped down and padded easily beside him as he made his way underneath, like the Stanler had instructed. "I wonder who she wanted me to tell...?" he mused aloud, after straightening.

<You're looking at them.>
If Joshua looked back at the thorn wall he crawled under he would see a pokemon decked out like in a plant cloak. It was a Burmy. <I'm the watch dog of this place. Now who told you how to get in here bub?! This is a secret place. We don't like uninvited and noisy humans in our midst.> The plant cloak around the wild pokemon made it look very well hidden in the wall. However, if one looked close enough they would notice that the leaves weren't part of the pokemon at all. A ninja bug pokemon? How much more awesome can you get? Though replying to it might be a good idea.

Joshua gave a slight start of surprise when he heard a Pokemon speak from behind him. Whirling around slightly as his gray eyes widened, he spotted a rather odd looking Pokemon which he'd never seen before. It identified itself as the 'watchdog' of the sanctuary, though in terms of appearance it was the farthest thing from a dog that Josh had ever seen. He didn't point this out however, but instead decided to answer the question the Pokemon had demanded an answer to.
"Stanler told me how to find this place," he said, after getting over the initial shock he'd recieved. "I'm not here to destroy or mess around with anything, I can promise you that," he added, to clarify. A lot of Pokemon seemed to think that trainers existed for that reason. I certainly don't want to meet up with any of them, then, he thought. He didn't like other people very much. Pokemon were great, but Josh wasn't social with human beings. Ironically enough.
"What are you, exactly?" he asked the Pokemon, his tone curious.

The Burmy listened to the trainer talk and his brow, or as much of a brow it had, frowned. <Stantler? You mean Ms. Klutz? Ooooh! The boss won't be too happy about this. This is the second trainer this month she lead her! THIS MONTH I SAY!>
It huffed in anger, it's plant cloak swaying by the puffs of air escaping it's mouth. It's beady black eyes looked up at Joshua, as if judging him. <How can I be sure you speak the truth? Your.... kind is full of liars.> The bug scowled at the trainer and listened once more to the boy ask another question. <Full of curiosity huh? Well as far as you're concerned, I'm the biggest asset this place can have. I have the emergency alarm ready in case a pest comes in that we don't want and I have the best camouflage around. Now, if you want to know what species I am then why don't you look at your computer thing. Or has your cat got that along with you manners? How about introducing yourself first next time.> The Burmy half ranted half lectured poor Joshua but it wasn't lying. Unable to be seen through the thick thorn looking wall, there was a vine that connected to a Chingling. That Chingling would ring, making others ring, which in turn would alert the whole area. That won't be good.

Well.
This was going to be difficult.
Joshua, while not many things, was a pretty good judge of character. And he got the feeling that this Pokemon was very stubborn, opinionated, and judgmental. Not to mention irritated with Stanler, as he made very clear with his ranting. It was quite funny, but he did have enough manners to hold in the laughter, because the Pokemon was just doing his job as the doorkeeper... if you could call the entrance a door, really.
"Is there anything I could do to prove to you that I mean no harm?" he asked. Though he was slightly exasperated with the constant trainers-are-evil beliefs that the Pokemon around here seemed to have, he'd be patient and convince them that he was harmless if it was what he had to do. He didn't want them to feel threatened by him, or anything.
Joshua blinked slightly. "The Pokedex, you mean?" Eris, meanwhile, didn't look too happy about being called a 'cat'. <I am not a cat!> she hissed irritably, fluffing out her fur. <I'm a Glameow, as I'm sure you knew quite well, bub!> She sarcastically repeated the word the Burmy had called Joshua upon their original entry. "Cool it, Eris," Josh sighed, rolling his eyes. "My name's Joshua," he said calmly to the Burmy. "As for the Pokedex, I promised that I wouldn't use anything like that without the permission of the Pokemon that reside here."
Eris had no such patience. <I don't like you,> she informed the Burmy irritably.
"She doesn't like anyone," Josh said. "It's not personal." Eris glared at him.

Joshua was right in the thought that Burmy was very stubborn, opinionated, and judgmental. This Burmy wasn't going to be fired for slacking on the job, that was for sure.
<To prove... You mush bring me a shrubbery! One that looks nice and not too expensive!>
The serious look on the bug pokemon's face could show nothing but the seriousness of the request. It wasn't joking. <Since you have now introduced yourself, I shall tell you. I, the great asset of this secluded and secret place, am a Burmy. Feel free to look it up. As for you..> It glared down at the Glameow. <I would prefer to have respect! If we allow you into our home you should feel honored!> He snarled out. Looking back at Joshua he gave a look that asked 'why are you still here without my shrubbery?'
