The angry little fire pokémon waited patiently for Xerian to give him a command as he stared at the vicious little rodent that had attacked his friend. When it came, he moved instantly. "Dodge left and Thunderpunch."
Even as he leapt to the left, the electric energy built in his tiny fist, crackling ominously. As he landed after his dodge, the charged up fist rocketed towards the Rattata, bearer behind it as Flicker aimed to get this battle over with before any one else decided to interfere.
The little Magby would show this Rattata what happened when it picked a fight on a currently defenseless pokémon. Flicker would protect Xerian. Flicker would defend her pokémon. Tiny little Flicker stood his ground, fists clenched as he awaited for any counterattack that may come.

The Rattata hadn't been expecting the Fire Pokemon to dodge, and he was so surprised when he landed on an empty patch of grass that he didn't have the time to leap out of the way and dodge Flicker's attack. The Thunderpunch hit him with critical accuracy, and he shrieked his rage as he whirled around, wincing from the pain of his burns. Consciousness was starting to fade but he couldn't... couldn't give up! Despite being obviously weakened, the small rat Pokemon bared his fangs and attempted to regain his Focus before lunging for another rendition of Tackle.

From her hiding place in the underbrush, the femme could see that her mate was suffering severely by the hands of this trainer and her Fire Pokemon. Beady eyes narrowed in extreme distaste as she dug her sharp claws into the dirt. She wasn't usually the fighter of the group, but there was no doubt that she was tough. She'd show them what happened to anyone that tried to touch her mate!
Leaping from the bushes with a snarl, she whipped around and waved her tail, trying to distract the Magby from her mate so that he could escape.

Receiving no further command from his Trainer, Flicker winced slightly as the Tackle connected, forcing him to stumble backward a few steps before regaining his balance. Shaking himself down, the fire pokémon found his eyes drawn away from the first Rattata, to another as it wagged it's tail in his direction.
"Flicker. Thunderpunch, again on the other Rattata!"
Other? Was that the one he was focused on or the one he had attacked before? Slightly perplexed, he ran at the previous Rattata and swung his electrically charged balled fist towards it. If it connected, he may be able to reduce the sudden handicap against him back down to a one on one.
Xerian bit her lip nervously. This was a first for her. The battle she had had with the Jigglypuff earlier hadn't been so risky. The Jigglypuff wasn't able to attack Flicker. This battle, however, had started as a one on one against a pokémon that COULD deal significant damage to her partner; as shown by the damage dealt to Shoat. Yet now he was outnumbered. Clutching the Weedle and Oran berry as if searching for some form of comfort from them, she waited to see what would happen next so she could act accordingly.

Rattata was surprised to see his mate bounding from her hiding place. He'd only seen her fight once before, on the night that they'd first became friends. She had taken on some trainer's Growlithe all on her own, and she'd won. (Granted, the Growlithe had been weakened previously, but he had no way of knowing this). He had no doubt in his mind that she would win against that pesky Magby. But she was trying to distract, now, rather than battle.
Confident that the distraction would work, the Rattata chose not to run, but instead to try and help her out with another attack of his own. This proved to be the entirely wrong decision. Instead of landing the tackle, Rattata succeeded only in plowing right into the Thunderpunch attack. There was no contest. Between the damage of the move and his burns, the male rat Pokemon had no fight left in him. With a slight squeak of defeat, he slumped onto the ground and closed his eyes.
::rattata:: Rattata has fainted! Attempt capture? Shoat gains half a level! Flicker gains half a level!
Upon seeing her mate go down, the female Rattata got even angrier. Abandoning all defensive tactics, she let lose a snarl of rage and lunged in for a Quick Attack. Usually, she would have taken the time to Focus or lower the opponents defense, but controlled by her anger and desire for vengeance, that was not an option. <You killed my mate!> she snarled furiously at the Magby, not yet realizing that he was only unconscious. <Murderer! You MURDERER!>

Flicker almost laughed at the other Rattata as it called him a Murderer, until her Quick Attack knocked him to the ground. He rolled once, standing with a slight shake. He hadn't been expecting that. Damn rodents.
He glanced quickly over at Xerian and nodded. Xerian wondered what he was nodding about for a moment... until she realised the other Rattata had been knocked out out. A small 'oh' passed her lips before she tugged an empty Pokéball from her bag and pressed the tiny button to enlarge it.
She tossed it towards the male rattata and waited patiently to see if it had been successful. Either way, if her capture attempt failed, Flicker looked ready to fully deal with the remaining Rattata.
It was exciting. Yesterday she had been just like any other average teenager. Today she was out capturing pokémon to one day become a Breeder. She kept her eyes on the Pokéball, trusting Flicker to alert her when the other Rattata attacked again.

The female Rattata's eyes went wide as she saw the trainer pull out some odd spherical object, which she recognized to be a Pokeball. It closed around her mate, and she was momentarily distracted from the battle by her distress. <No!> she insisted, realizing now that her mate was not, in fact, dead, but was about to become part of this trainer's sick collection. <No, no, no! What are you doing, you crazed demon?!> she demanded of the trainer, hissing angrily. That was her mate in there, not some random wanderer. They were a family! She couldn't take him away from her!
Inside of the Pokeball, the male Rattata was too weak to be much of a fighter. The ball rocked feebly as he tried once for his escape, but it obviously wasn't going to break open. The soft ping sounded, and the defeated rat Pokemon sighed to himself. It would seem that he didn't have a choice. He'd be going with the very same Pokemon he'd been trying to defeat. Ugh.

The force of the angry Rattata's tackle was more than enough to knock Flicker down again; he brushed the pokéball in the process and instinctively gave it a little nudge towards Xerian before the rodent could make off with it. Forcing himself back to his feet, Flicker stared down the female, body starting to throb and ache from the attacks inflicted upon his small body. His breath was gradually becoming laboured and soon he was going to need more than just commands from Xerian.
Xerian stopped the pokéball with her foot and picked it up. "Gnaw." she said simply, reducing the ball back to it's small size and clipping it next to Shoat. She felt bad for taking the male Rattata away from his mate, but then again, it had attacked Shoat.
"Flicker, Screech."
The keening wail came the moment Flicker opened his small mouth. Xerian shielded the Weedle in her arms from the sound as she gave the next order. "Thunderpunch!"
Not much longer, Flicker told himself as he charged forwards, electricity crackling around his fist as he moved, aiming the attack to the flank of the purple rat. Not much longer and he'd be able to have a rest.

The Rattata's will to fight was dropping. What was she going to do without her mate? Ever since they'd met, they'd hardly been apart for long, and she couldn't remember what her life was like without him! Why had this stupid trainer and her stupid Pokemon decided to ruin her life like this? Grief was affecting her style of fighting, and so her accuracy and strength probably wasn't as good as usual. She barely cared, at the moment.
Still, she wasn't going to give up this fight. She was going to fight with every scrap of her strength. Maybe if she beat this stupid Magby up, she could steal the Pokeball and run? Yes. Yes, that was what she would do! However, she was so intent on forming this plan that she was oblivious to the approaching Thunderpunch, and it hit her directly.
Skidding backward in the dirt, the Rattata leaped to her paws and lunged for a Quick Attack toward the Magby. <I will get my mate back!> she shrieked.

How Xerian managed to not squeeze Weedle to death when the Quick Attack flung Flicker backwards was beyond her. A small gasp left her throat as Flicker struggled to his feet, yellow embers mingled with black. She took that as a sign and plucked a potion from her bag.
Dashing to her pokémon's side, Xerian spray the bottle of potion over Magby's weary form, anxious eyes watching him intently. Flicker took a deep breath as the smokey embers that tumbled from his mouth slowly filtered out the sooty black, blazing sunshine yellow once more. Breathing a sigh of relief, Xerian patted her partner on the head and took a few steps back, out of the way.
<You shouldn't have picked on Shoat.> Flicker said to the dangerous little rodent as he straightened up properly, still a little sore, but feeling stronger as the pain left him. <I don't like it when my friends are attacked.>

The rattata simply could not care. This Pokémon had murdered her mate and stolen him away, and she was going to do anything to destroy it, shread it with her powerful fangs, and then do the same to that trainer. She was bind with rage and sorrow, and it might have been the only thing really keeping her form going. She was not the strong one, in the relationship, and hadn't battled nearly enough to be as strong as her mate. That one attack had done quite a number on her, but she was definitely not giving up.
The Pokémon grit her teeth as she tried to devise a plan against this foe, calming herself down a bit. Rage was only going to make her lose, in this context. The trainer had used a potion on the red beast, and her chances of coming out of the fight a victor using traditional methods. Was there anything she could use? Anything that could aid her? The road was empty, save a few pebbles. It would have to do, she figured. At least it would keep her a safer distance away.
The rattata went over to the stones by the side of the road and used a tail whip to fling them towards the magby, hoping that both the sand and the stones would injure the Pokémon and also impair him of his vision. Better yet would be if the trainer became distracted and she would be able to snag the pokeball away and run as fast as she could.

What a spiteful, nasty little Rattata this was. Flicker covered his eyes with his paws as the stones flew at him, bouncing off his tiny frame, stinging his body as they connected. Did she not realise that her partner wasn't dead? Chances were, Xerian would capture this Rattata too, anyway, so why was it being so damn persistant?
Xerian had huddled over slightly, protecting her face and the Weedle from the vicious little stone storm the Rattata was creating and it was with a small voice that she issued her next command. "Ember."
Flicker leapt from the ground, getting as much out of the way of the pebble barrage as possible before opening his mouth and allowing his own raining attack of embers to descend on the pissed off Rattata. He just wanted this battle to be over so they could attend to the Weedle.
Landing with a soft thump, he shook himself off. The pebbles had left a few grazes and they stung slightly as the breeze hit them. Damn rat.

At first, she grew hopeful when the red beast covered it's eyes, figuring that this signified a possible victory. Even if the potion had been used on her opponent, she could still have fight left in her, right? There was nothing left but fight, after all. No mate, no nothing. He had been everything to her. The Rattata fixed a momentary, beady glower on the trainer. This split second of turning her attention away from the battle sealed her fate.
She felt the embers hit her, singing her fur painfully. A shriek of pain escaped her jaws, and she stumbled slightly toward the Magby. If she could just get close enough to tackle it, one more tackle, maybe, just maybe it would be enough...
Rattata is hurt by it's burn!
But in the end, the pain ended up being too much. <I failed him!> she wailed to herself, before submitting her sanity to unconsciousness.

"I feel bad taking her mate away from her..." Xerian said softly, looking at the rattata sadly. Taking an empty pokéball from her bag, she enlarged it. "These two will come in handy one day when I finally become a Breeder," she said, trying to sound optimistic as she threw the ball at the fallen rattata.
Flicker came to her side and peered up an her curiously. Humans were such odd creatures. Each one was different, just like Pokémon. He found it fascinating.
If she caught this Rattata, not only would she have a nice little party of pokémon, but she'd have gotten adjusted to the process of catching pokémon. She smiled at Flicker, kneeling to the ground and putting the Weedle down now that it was safe. "It's safe now. Here's the berry Flicker got for you." She placed it on the ground in front of the Weedle. Now they could concentrate on helping Weedle.

The fallen Rattata was enveloped in an aura of red light, sucked inside the pokeball. The sphere dropped to the ground and began to roll a little as the female rat realized what was happening. At first she attempted to escape the ball - then a thought came to her. If she was being caught like her mate was, they'd be able to stay together. The comforting thought overwhelmed her thoughts of escape and caused her to willingly stay inside the red and white capsule, sealing her fate.
The pokeball gave a ping to signal that the capture was successful.

The guilt that Xerian felt at capturing Gnaw vanished as the pokéball pinged to signify the capture of the other Rattata. Flicker waddled over to the pokéball and brought it back to her as she sat on the ground near the Weedle, waiting for him to eat the berry Flicker has so dutifully collected for him.
As he set the ball next to Xerian's foot, she picked it up and watched it shrink. "There you go, Nip. Reunited with your mate," she said softly. Either she imagined it or there was a tiny, excited and appreciative shake of the capsule as she clipped it to her belt next to Gnaw.
It would be time to pay a visit to the city soon. If only to stock up on supplies, Xerian knew this; but right now she was more than content to sit with Flicker and Weedle under the warmth of the sun.

Once the Weedle had his water and Oran Berry, he hastily ate and drank to his hearts content. The berry's healing powers quickly overflowed through his body, and he instantly felt like his energy was at 80%! If it had been a Sitrus berry, that would've done the job for sure, but this was enough to carry him onward. Standing upright to face the Magby, the Weedle gave an appreciative bow to show his gratitude for their kindness.
<Now that my brain is working, I think I know where I am now. I wish the best of luck to you.> He said, a lot of sincerity in his voice. Knowing that he had a marathon to finish, he scurried off into the dirt path of route one, knowing that it would eventually lead him to his friends.
::weedle:: Weedle Left. [/b] The route erupted with the calls of bird Pokemon in the forest, which was weird, because their calls had only been few and spread out within the background noise. Apparently there was some kind of excitement going on deeper into the route, which happened to stray away from the safety of the path. If you planned on going down that way, you'd best make sure not to get lost. [/font]

Xerian beamed as the little Weedle went off on his merry way knowing that she had just done a good deed thanks to the help of her pokémon. Not only that, but she had successfully captured a pair of rattata. Today was looking to be a very good day for her!
The sudden blast of noise stunned the young girl as she pushed herself up onto her feet. It was near deafening, and although it evidently came from somewhere off the beaten path, she couldn't squash her curiosity.
"What do you think?" she asked of her little partner.
Flicker glanced up at her. <Could be more pokémon that need help,> he suggested.
That was it for Xerian. Glancing around, trying to memorize her surroundings, she set off towards the direction of the din, straying away from the worn path, heading deeper and deeper in, Flicker ever loyal and extra vigilant at her side.

There was, indeed, excitement going on deeper in the forest. But no Pokemon were particularly hurt; if they were, it was their own fault, they knew what they were getting into. They had chosen this deep place off the path in hopes that they could avoid any interference from trainers and their Pokemon, but of course, as Xerian was approaching, they had failed somewhat in their attempts.
A makeshift battle-ground had been constructed in a small clearing beside a stream. Several Pokemon had crowded around, forming a circle around two Nidoran that were duking it out. It was clear that they were friends, because the expressions were purely of concentration, there was no rage involved.
<Yeah!> one of the Pokemon, a female Sentret, called enthusiastically from the throng. <Keep it up!> She was rooting for her best friend, the Pokemon who was winning the fight. She figured that some friendly fanfare couldn't hurt.
Meanwhile, a Taillow was circling the perimeter, keeping a look out for those that were not supposed to be attending this little event. However, the male was growing rather bored with his post, and so upon spotting Xerian and her partner, he simply flitted down and landed lightly on a thin, lower branch of a sapling. It dropped and swayed under his weight before steadying, and he ducked his wing in a gentleman's fashion. <How do you do?> he asked politely, before continuing, <You know, you're quite far from the path...>

Surprised by the politeness of the bird as it addressed her, it took Xerian a moment to respond. "Yes, we are. I'm ever so sorry if we disturbed you. We heard a lot of noise and worried that a pokémon might be injured," she said by way of explanation as she looked intently at the bird.
"We didn't mean to intrude."
<What's going on here, anyway?> Flicker asked the Taillow as Xerian scanned it with her machine thing. <It was so quiet up until recently.>
Flicker was genuinely curious as to just what the pokémon were doing that was making such a ruckus. This Taillow seemed to be extremely well mannered, but that didn't stop Flicker from cutting straight to the chase in asking what was going on.
Xerian eyed the bird. It was a pretty shade of rich blue with a crimson read around his face. Such a handsome bird, really; and at the same time... so small!

The Taillow gave a soft chirp of amusement and ruffled his blue and white wings slightly, shaking his head. <Oh, no,> he assured the Magby and her trainer, laughing again. His laugh was quite attractive, a trilling sort of tweet to display his amusement as accurately as possible. <no, please don't worry. It's nothing like that!> Now, of course, there was battling... but they were all willing participants, so that made it alright, yes? He noticed the human pull out some odd sort of machine, seeming to scan him with it. Curious, the bird tilted his head slightly. <And what might that odd contraption be, miss?> he wondered. <Nothing harmful, I would hope! Certainly not!> After all, he was quite the friendly fellow, but he certainly didn't want anyone coming into his territory to harm him!
Granted, the bird Pokemon's 'territory' changed almost daily. He grew bored of the same thing, over and over again, so he often liked to move around and change location, see the sights. This pair seemed like quite the entertaining duo, however. A Fire Pokemon he'd never seen before! He only knew the name from a description given to him by a certain Hoothoot that knew quite the number of species. He apparently liked to 'trainer-watch', a variation of bird-watching from the Pokemon's perspective.
Taking a moment to run his beak through his feathers to preen them, the gentleman-like bird ruffled his wings again. <Oh, just a common event for the locals, you know? Testing their skill-sets against one another. I'm supposed to be keeping everyone else out, but you don't seem too bad. A tad boring, this job gets. After a while, anyways.> He gave a dramatic sigh. <But what can one do, really?> He paused, then inquired, <Is that all you wandered down here for? Curious about the ruckus?>
