Soren was about to shake his head at the bird's demand for food, but suddenly remembered that the paras -- not appearing quite as appetizing now that he wasn't that hungry -- had left a couple of berries in his possession. He nodded and reached for his pouch, keeping his movements small, and pulled out an Oran berry. He brought it up to the starly's eye-level, where it would be able to peck at it without dislodging itself from his shoulders. He also took this time to look at the startly a bit more carefully, observing every feather, noting how they moved as the Pokémon breathed. He loved the longer, harder feathers that composed his wings and tail and he got excited seeing the smaller, softer, downy feather. Did he had a small fetish for feathers? It was quite possible. Soren had never explored that area in his life, but he did not doubt the fact that he had a fixation for them.

Starly took the offered Oran berry, pecking at it and cooing appreciatively as the hard, juicy flesh filled his belly. He ignored the groping eye that gazed upon his soft feathers. When he was finally full, he let out a satisfied coo and rubbed her face affectionately on Soren's cheek. <Thank you~> Cheeped the Starly happily.

Soren allowed the bird to have her fill before slipping his hand back into his pouch, fishing for an empty pokeball. It did not take long, as the lighter of the metal spheres naturally came to the top. His fingers brushed the red and white ball, wondering if he was being too hasty, if it was going to scare the starly away. But... he wanted to own the bird, to own its flight and to have it be his. So he took the pokeball out and showed it to the Starly, silently wondering if it would understand what he was asking it, what he wanted from it. Just in case, though, he finally found the courage to open his mouth once again and speak a couple of words. "Please," he started, glad that no disastrous sounds escaped this time around. What else? What else did he want to tell the bird? " Stay." ::pokeball::

Starly noticed the trainer's hand slipping into his pouch and cheeped with surprise as he pulled out an odd red-and-white capsule. He'd never seen one before, and was skeptical about what it meant. However, that was when the man spoke. Stay. That implied that he'd have a home inside of that thing. Though, how was he going to fit? The bird pecked the ball to test it out and the ball, recognizing the contact of pokemon DNA, opened up and swallowed the bird in red light.
At first, the bird panicked, which made the ball rock back and forth violently. However, when he realized that it was snug and comfortable inside the capsule, he stayed inside. And he'd have a new trainer, too - he'd heard about them from his friends who had been released by others. Perhaps living with this man would be a good life - he wouldn't have to go searching for food as much, at least.
The pokeball emitted a loud sound before the button's red light faded to white.

Soren's heart fluttered when the pokeball finally clicked close, the sound reassuring him that the Starly was his now. He caressed the metal surface, warming it up with his hands. He would name it later, he decided. He couldn't quite think of any at the moment, and wanted one that would fit the Starly that had won his heart the moment he saw those wings. Flynn, he thought. He did not know where the name came from, as it came to him like a sudden inspiration. He guess the Starly would be Flynn, and he would inform the bird so next time he saw him. He hand ran over the smooth surface once more before minimizing the capsule and slipping it into his bag. If he wasn't afraid of showing the world his emotions, he would have been smiling.
With a full team in his pouch, he continued to walk down route one, unable to believe his luck. A starly. <3.

A ledyba that was taking an afternoon flight over the Route looked down and saw an odd-looking person. Walking on the road. The road was usually specified as neutral territory by the wild pokemon, but Ledyba decided to be a jerk territorial towards this new visitor.
She flew down to Soren's eye-level and began to berate him. <Sir, this is my turf, so you better get a move on before I DESTROY your face!> Squeaked the little ladybug, being too snobby for her own good. She wasn't usually this much of a brat, but now and then liked to have some fun at the expense of others. The insect wondered how this human would react to her trolling.

Soren watched the Pokémon fly over with mixed feelings. It was a bug pokemon, which really didn't attract him that much -- though that may have been due to the fact that he was still internally giddy about his new starly -- and somehow he knew that his other pokemon would not enjoy having this pokemon around. However, he was intrigued by the pokemon's flight pattern. It was just so different, the featherless wings allowing the bug to maneuver in a way that was not familiar to him, and he wanted to learn how this was done. This interest, coupled with his slight disregard for others, made him completely ignore the pokemon's word and just reached over, wanting to grab a part of the bug to bring it close as to examine the translucent wings.

Ledyba crossed her arms as she awaited the man's response to her nagging. His staring eyes were making her a bit uncomfortable, and she began to think about flying away in search of someone else to bother, when suddenly the man reached out with one of his hands towards her. She was completely unprepared for this action and was tugged in his direction.
<H-hey! Watch the wings, fool!> She buzzed, attempting to wriggle free but not wanting to rip her delicate wing membranes. What did the man want? Hopefully not.. to eat her?!?

Soren ignored the bug's movements, keeping a tight grip on the thin membrane that was used as the pokemon's wings. The clear material had a sheen to it and he found it quite interesting to see every vein that brought the energy to the wings. It looked nothing like a feathered wing and behaved even less like one. Were all bugs' wings like this? Does it carry the current as well as the other types of wings?
Finally, when the pokemon's struggle became a bit too strong, he let go of the trapped member, returning the bug pokemon's freedom. His intention hadn't been to hurt the creature. Not yet, anyways. He still wasn't sure if it was worth his while to capture the Pokémon. It was different, yes, but he did not have too many pokeballs at his disposal.
"Fly," he told it, still a bit curious. Now that he had seen them close up, he wanted to observe the ledyba's flying pattern. Maybe the research would be worth the investment if it was interesting enough.

Ledyba continued to squirm in the human's rough grip, and when he finally released his rude hand from her she let out a sigh of relief. Then, frightened out of her wits, she prepared to fly away from him - but his brief command interrupted her thoughts. Though she found that it was humorous to annoy others, she did have a soft side. Hearing his order made her feel as though she had to grant it, else feel guilty for having ignored someone.
The ladybug hesitated in the air for a little bit, then flew around in the shape of an infinity. She then did a few more loops and corkscrews in the air until she finally came to a stop in front of Soren once again, panting slightly. Her wings beat constantly, and working them too hard caused a significant decrease in energy.

The flight had a mesmerizing pattern that Soren had never seen before. The insect's control in the air surpassed what any avians could do. It was different, eccentric, and he wanted to harness it. Would his other Pokémon learn from this? He wanted them to, willed them to learn the master the airs like this ledyba had. But for that, he would have to catch it.
He took a pokeball from his pouch, searching around for the right one. The bug Pokémon was quite agile and proficient in the air and he had to find an equally skilled flyer. He enlarged the ball, brushing his thumb on the button, before releasing his natu. Oriole shook herself out a bit as she was out in the open air again, fluttering her wings a bit before landing on Soren's outstretched palm.
"Fight," Soren said, but not to his own Pokémon. The ledyba had somehow gained a bit of his respect, maneuvering itself in the air.

The Ledyba was pleased at the human's slightly obvious interest in her flight pattern. However, she hadn't anticipated his next move - removing a pokeball and allowing one of his pokemon to exit the ball. The ladybug gritted her teeth in anxiety as the green bird appeared in front of her. What did the man want? <I don't want to,> Hissed the bug, but getting frustrated, decided to fight anyway.
Floating upwards, the Ledyba descended quickly towards Oriole and angled his body for full effect.

The attack completely failed, though, as Soren retreated his Pokémon before even executing any commands. The Ledyba hit his outstretched palm instead, and hurt quite a bit more than he had thought it would.
Why didn't the Pokémon want to fight? Wasn't it natural for these creatures? Wasn't it something they did? But this Pokémon showed a disinterest in the notion, and Soren hadn't been sure how to react. He had done the first thing that came to mind and honored the insect's wishes. Maybe it had been his years in the battlefield, where they would not engage a fight unless it was more or less consensual.
"Why?" he asked the Pokémon. And why, despite not wanting to fight, the Ledyba had still attacked?

Ledyba gave a squeak as he rushed into the human's rough palm rather than soft bird's down, like he'd expected. Looking up, he saw Soren's unemotional gaze and floated backward a small distance until he could see the human's entire face.
She pondered the question with half-lidded eyes fixed at the side. Finally she looked back at Soren, a fierce determination in her gaze. <... It hurts,> Said the ladybug finally, her eyes becoming shameful as she said it. <I'm not experienced, so I always lose..> She continued, looking down. This was the reason she went around being rude to people and pokemon - with her easy flight she could simply fly away if they challenged her. But somehow, Soren had gotten her attention.

Soren listened to the pokemon speak, though his eyes constantly deviated towards her delicate membrane she used as wings. They were beautiful, and surely he could exploit that.
"Fly for me," he told her. It was then that he had decided that he was going to challenge both the gym leaders and the coordinators. A flying pokemon's beauty was something he wanted to master, and though showcasing their flying abilities in front of a crowd was not exactly what he had in mind, the thought of watching any of his pokemon flying about under a spotlight, the harsh glare shimmering through the thin wings, made him excited. He took out a pokeball, one of his last, and presented it to the Ledyba. "I don't lose."
Or at least, he hadn't lost yet. However Soren was confident in his abilities and had no intentions of ever admitting defeat to anyone. Besides, it was no unheard of to present small white lies during recruitment periods. How else did armies grow, if not for the beauty and glory that was shown upfront?

Ledyba continued to look down as the human spoke, but as soon as the pokeball was raised to her face she took on a surprised look. <.. You still want me?> Asked the bug in astonishment and disbelief. Then, realizing he'd commanded her to fly, she swooped up into the air and attempted to weave an intricate pattern in the sky, showcasing her joy that he'd accepted her despite her lacking battle experience.
After the display, the beaming ladybug swooped back down and tackled the pokeball in Soren's hand, being sucked inside in the process. The sphere didn't move at all, simply sat in the trainer's hand where it belonged until the pokeball gave a loud beep signalling capture.

Soren watched the Pokémon fly for him again, feeling that the Ledyba had given him a great gift. She had understood him in a way no stranger could, and instantly felt a connection with her. With a little training, he was sure that she would do fine in coordinator contests. And Meris too, if the wingull still wanted to stay with him. At least, the ledyba would be able to teach him how to fly and build up wing muscles while tracing patterns in the sky. After that, only the water Pokémon could decide his own fate.
In the meantime, he had to strengthen his fliers up a bit. Some of them hadn't gotten nearly enough practice with him and executed his orders a bit sloppily, and the Ledyba -- Leeta, he decided -- would gain confidence as well if she understood how he fought and how he took care of his Pokémon. Route one had plenty of week Pokémon crawling about, and it wouldn't take too long to find a suitable victim.

Happily bouncing through the route in completely random zigzag patterns, a Sunkern emerged from behind several trees. She was very energetic and full of good humor as she balanced a broken Pokeball on her head. Or so it looked like she was balancing it. As she jumped up and down around the tree roots, the Pokeball hadn't jumped up with her. In fact, it was almost as if the leaves on her pretty little head were strong enough to hold the Pokeball in place.
<Laaaa~ di di dadida!> She sang, having the pure voice of a child. Even though her singing wasn't in perfect key, it was just cute enough to let that flaw go as she sang her heart out.
The Wild Sunkern roamed around Soren's legs, not realizing that he was a person and not a tree. As she weaved around them, she started to continue in a random pattern in the middle of the path. She looked as if she didn't have a purpose, that is, except to have fun.

Soren felt no compassion, no love, no emotion for the little kernel Pokémon. In his eyes, it was easy prey, and definitely an easy meal. It came closer and closer to him until it was nearly at his legs. He would have kicked it, but then again that would have gone against those magical unwritten rules. Trainers are supposed to use Pokémon to fight their battles. Normally he didn't mind that, but sometimes a nice, swift kick could be so much more effective.
The trainer reached into his pocket and pulled out a pokeball. He had debated long and hard about which one to use, as they all needed a bit of extra training, but he settled on Flynn. He wanted to see the Starly fly again, even for just a moment. The capsule expanded and out came the bird, who fluttered around to stretch his wings a bit.
<Swiftly.> Flynn had never actually battled for him before, and the command was completely foreign to the bird. The Starly looked at its trainer quizzically, wondering what was asked of him, before Soren spoke again. <Quick attack.>
A hand pointed at the innocent little sunkern, and the bird Pokémon almost felt bad for attacking a defenseless creature, but orders were orders, and once bound by a pokeball, they were law.

Still oblivious to the trainer's obvious distaste for him, and even going as far as to not hear the Pokeball pop open, the Sunkern was just about to hop out of view when she heard a voice speak out. It sounded foreign and difficult to understand, but her curiosity was aroused and she stopped with her frolicking, turning to look at Soren for the first time. There was a Starly fluttering about right next to him, and she instantly cringed at the sight.
Birds and grass type Pokemon didn't tend to get along, which aroused a sudden sense of dread within her. She felt paralyzed in her spot when the Starly zoomed towards her with a Quick Attack, hitting her with sharp accuracy in the center of her chest.
Ah, how she wished that she was in a soft meadow full of flowers right now. There was one nearby, in a place thereabout, but she had been so foolish as to wander this far away from it. Puffing out her chest, she started to grow in size and power. Maybe she'd be an easier target now, but with a Growth move, her attacks would have more force.
