Soren kept an eye on the Paras, making sure it did not run away. He noted that the battle looked a lot different from this new perspective, sitting on the ground as opposed to standing behind the action. He was also much closer and immediately noticed the disadvantage -- Heat Wave would be difficult to use in such close quarters. "Lower and Surprise," he said next. Nayj hadn't been able to dodge the scratch which landed near her wings, leaving little tuffs of her snowy down lodged in the Paras' claws. At this distance, he could also see the expression on his pokemon's face. Nayj did not seem too fazed by the attack and simply executed his commands perfectly. She started out with a growl, letting out cute noises from the back of her throat, before suddenly using an astonish. ::Swablu:: Nayj <Growl> <Astonish>

Paras had executed her attack, but now the down stuck in her claws would lower the damage done by her scratch. The growl given by the cute bird made her seem weak, however, so the bug became a little less fierce. Suddenly, though, the Swablu came again, this time using an odd move that made the parasite pokemon flinch.

Soren was quite pleased with the attack. Last time he had tried to use it, it resulted in utter failure. He was even more pleased when the Pokémon didn't seem able to attack back. Had Nayj's attack managed to spook the paras so badly it couldn't react? Taking advantage of the situation, he gave another order. "Peck." The blue Pokémon quickly followed up her last attack with the new one, her beak growing larger as she approached the paras, her wings sending her through the air. Nayj<Peck>

Paras was still a bit dazed from the Astonish before, and had frozen in panic as the bird advanced towards her with another peck. This time, the bird landed a critical hit on Paras' face, which was just enough to send the insect flying backward against another tree. She fell down to the base of the tree, spent from the battle.

Soren watched the Paras faint, expecting and dreading his next move. He asked Nayj to bring the Pokémon closer to him, noting that there were still the two berries the paras had probably wanted for itself. Spoils of war, he thought. He would make sure to find a use for them. But now, with Nayj resting on his head and a dead paras on his lap, he steeled himself for what was to come. Carefully, he plucked the mushrooms out, surprised that they were stuck quite firmly to the shell and had to use a bit of force. Did he had to cook the Pokémon? Was it even edible?
He sighed and allowed his injured Pokémon to come out of their pokeball. Elsu, Merris, and Oriole were let out, all three a bit surprised. They had been nursing their wounds and still looked worse for wear. Well, it was now or never. He took the paras' claw in one hand, the body in the other, and twisted it right off. A little bit of what Soren could only assume to be bug blood oozed out from the wound, runing down his hand and wrist. Almost instinctively, not wanting to completely ruin his clothing and smell like... dead paras, he licked the fluid off his skin.
Damn. It actually didn't taste so bad, and now he was even hungrier, knowing that the food was available. His subconscious could just take a back seat for a few moments, until he was done. He chucked the paras, now missing a claw, at his other bird pokemon, allowing them a bit of food, a reward for their hardships. He was content with the single claw, once in a while feeding a bite or two to the swablu on his head. There was not much actual flesh in the Paras -- the innards were kind of liquid with transparent filaments running through them. He had also tried a bit of the mushrooms, but they tasted completely fowl. His pokedex told him that this tochukaso was used for medicinal purposes. No wonder it tasted so bad.
With his stomach just a little bit fuller and his Pokémon a little bit happier after the meal, Soren returned all of his birds to their pokeball and stashed them safely in his pouch before dozing off, hands gripping protectively his parcel.

Nighttime fell with nary a disturbance, besides an occasional pokemon feeding on the scraps of the Paras that Soren had consumed. Most wild pokemon were too skittish to even dare to make a noise around humans or other creatures in general, allowing Soren to sleep peacefully. It was very early morning when a pokemon was rooting around for food and saw Soren laying at a tree.
The pokemon was a Bellsprout that was curious about this strange human. He sniffed around, then finally mustered the corage to nodge Soren's hand out of boldness and curiosity. He hadn't a second thought about the dangers this might bring him.

Soren was never an incredibly deep sleeper and became aware of his surroundings the moment the bellsprout touched him. He did not startle, though, still pretending to sleep, which he mentally applauded himself for. He'd often forget to do just that and lose the advantage he gained by being able to make out the situation while others still thought him to be asleep. The pokemon did not seem threatening in any way, and Soren tried to peer at it through half lidded eyes. What did it want with him, though?
The trainer decided to feign sleep, just a bit longer to see what the grass pokemon wanted.

Bellsprout noticed that the trainer's eyes twitched a little, but believed it was only an act of sleep. Scooting closer, the bellsprout reached into Soren's bag to see what was inside. Goodies? Food? It didn't matter to this weed, since she loved to nab things!
She came upon a nice-looking green rock with a leaf imbued on it, and snagged it out of the bag, snickering quietly.

Soren could not let this go on. The pokemon had the nerve to steal from him! How did it even get to his pouch? He must have been careless in his sleep. Before the bug could get out of reach, his eyes snapped open and quickly grabbed whatever belonged to him back. It was a stone he had almost forgotten he had. But it was his and the plant-like pokemon had no right to look through his stuff! He gripped his bag closer to himself, almost fearing the pokemon would try to take anything else from him. Unfortunately, this made it quite hard for him to reach for a pokeball to call for help, and he could do nothing else but scoot away for a bit whilst glaring at the pokemon. Later he would realize that he had shown emotion on his face.

The bellsprout nearly jumped with fright as the supposedly asleep human snatched the pretty stone out of her leaves. <U-uh... let's pretend that never happened! Hi, I'm bellsprout! And you??> The weed said, giggling nervously as she realized she was screwed unless this person was merciful - and that was highly unlikely. His face frightened her, and she scooted away, cowering in fear.

Soren did not say anything to the pokemon. He was still mad that it had the nerve to go through his stuff. He was also furious for allowing something like this happen. What if it had been a thief? What if they had taken something important from him? He carried all of his irreplaceables in that pouch, and it had been just a careless move to loosen his grip on it.
"Leave," he said. His voice was still shaking a bit and he just wanted some time alone to recompose himself. He slowly brought his two hands together, managing to opening the drawstring pouch and letting the evolutionary stone to drop in it, clinging against the metal surface of his pokeballs.

Bellsprout tilted her head in puzzlement when the trainer commanded her to go. Usually people didn't respond to her theft like this; they often sent out their pokemon to battle her, or gave her a piece of food to compensate or something. For a few seconds she didn't move, unnknowing what to do.
Giving a sigh of failure, she crawled away, roots carrying her elsewhere where hopefully she could find a person that would be entertaining to steal from.

Soren watched the bellsprout leave, and only when it was far enough did he relax, a bit, letting out the breath he didn't realize he was holding in. He slumped down, his shoulders low and his head towards the canopy. The sun was fighting its way through the thick leaves, making the world almost glisten in speckled light. Soren closed his eyes. He had to calm down. His emotions were rarely this high, rarely this raw. He thought he had control of them, but it seemed there were still things that could get under his skin.
Taking a final deep breath, Soren replaced the neutral mask on his face and stood up, his feet still slightly sore. They would be fine after a few hundred steps, he knew. He securely fastened his pouch to the belt, making sure that the knots were solid. He cursed the grass pokemon for giving him such a scare. Never again, he told himself. He was going to have to be more careful.
Checking his surroundings one last time and checking if he had dropped anything, Soren made his way back to the main path, and then off toward the city once more.

A young Starly nearby was flying around the route, enjoying the view from above. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Soren walking on the beaten road that many trainers before him had traversed. He noticed the trainer's shoulder. It was a broad shoulder, curved just enough so that it would be comfortable to roost upon. It was calling to him to land on it, just calling out.
The little bird descended and landed on Soren's shoulder, and he decided it was indeed every way that it had seemed. A prime specimen of a right shoulder.

Still a bit shaken -- though you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at him -- and his senses flaring around him, Soren noticed the Starly as it was approaching him, his head turning just as he felt its weight on his shoulders, the claws grabbing onto his clothes (and shoulder, a bit). His eyes widened a bit by it before shining in glee. The pokemon was gorgeous. His heart fluttered with excitement, the wind picking up around him just a bit. He walked a bit slower, trying not to startle the bird roosting on his shoulders, and quickly glanced at his pokedex. A starly, it told him. The pokedex was put away and he gently raised a hand, making sure it was in clear view before approaching the pokemon with it, wanting to give it's beak a little pet. He was cautious, wanting the bird pokemon to understand that he meant no harm. He loved his other pokemon dearly and would never trade them for anything, but the sight of another bird, especially in flight, made him weak.

Starly was a bit flustered when Soren decided to slow down, thinking that he was going to keep pace. He flapped his wings a bit, keeping balance, then settled down into his cosy shoulder again. Somehow, when he looked at him with those deep red eyes, he was calmed. He allowed the fingers to stroke his beak, even nuzzling the gentle hand with his head. He rather enjoyed the man's affection and awe - after all, Starlies weren't often seen as anything more than pests in the cities and towns of Cheyenne. He gave a soft cooing of affection, showing that he enjoyed Soren's company.

Though his face remained relatively passive, his eyes were gleaming with joy, showing the smile that his lips wouldn't dare. His fingers kept gently stroking the beak, though his stomach fluttered when the pokemon cooed. He wasn't even sure why he opened his mouth then, as he wouldn't have known what to say to the pokemon. Maybe his intent was to say hello, to ask it how it was doing, to further seduce convince the Starly to stay with him, but the sound that came from his mouth was nothing a human could ever produce. It was an ugly sound, a horrid cry, a chirp that had nothing attractive about it. It was hoarse, only half-formed, unlike the melodic chirps any bird could produce without effort. His eyes steeled, the happiness in them turning quickly into horror as the hand that had been stroking the Starly went straight to his throat. What was... how could... Half-breeds. Can't do anything right. He had never heard himself do something this disgusting before. Why did he have to open that mouth of his? His other bird pokemon were mostly content in his silence, feeling the wind around him and using that to gauge his intents instead. Soren could also, if he tried hard enough, to produce a cry that was distinctively swellow (though his throat would be sore the next day), but he never thought a sound so ugly could come from him. He looked to his other side, away from the Starly, furious at himself.

The Starly continued to coo happily as the kind hand continued to stroke his feathers. Then, suddenly, he heard Soren's odd chirp. The bird froze for a few seconds, looking around to see if any other birds were on the premises, then decided it was from an ill bird nearby. He looked back at Soren and was then surprised to see his hand at his neck and head turned from him.
<D-Did I do something wrong?> Chirruped the starly, hopping closer to Soren's head. His talons weren't long enough to puncture his skin, but he was still careful not to harm the gentle human.

Soren was still trying to compose himself, to hopefully forget about what had just happened (maybe he was still asleep?) and continue on with his life without constant reminders that he was a crossbreed, something stuck in between, without a category of his own.
The bird on his shoulder shifted a bit, making him turn back, trying not to look so disgusted about himself. At the Starly's chirp, much more melodic and soothing, Soren shook his head, though mindful not to go too fast and unbalance the avian. His hand had left his throat, though he wasn't ready to open his mouth again just yet and opted to scratch the bird's neck feather, where he saw some of the new feathers still in their protective casing, though ready to burst out and add to the dark plumage.

Starly shrugged, thinking that Soren was ignoring his question so as not to scare him away, and let out a gentle coo as his fingers lightly scratched his plumage. It was as if the man knew exactly where to scratch a bird. The rumbling this noise made in his throat reminded him of his rumbling stomach. He'd actually been flying for food, but Soren distracted him in his search. He looked around, attempting to locate a berry tree or bush of some sort, but there were none in the current premises. He turned toward Soren with a pleading look. <Food..?> He chirped, the feathers on his body fluffing a bit.
