Soren could not get his Pokémon out fast enough. The moment he heard the sound, he let out the Pokémon. He had gone for his strongest, fearing the worse, and out came Oosu. The proud Swellow soared out of the pokeball, flying out a bit before quickly taking a 180 degree turn and flying back toward his trainer. The Pokémon saw the rattata and, without even hearing a command or asking any questions, attacked the intruder with a quick Aerial Ace. As he approached the rodent, he let out a little trill. The rodent was such an ugly Pokémon in his eyes. He was so much prettier and more gorgeous than that little purple thing. The trainer watched his Pokémon -- his favorite despite everything -- fly. Letting Oosu out was a risky move of his. The Pokémon was definitely his strongest, as he had gotten it in a trade for a rare shadow pokemon, but the Swellow was also known to sometimes not listen to his commands. OosuAerial Ace

Rattata shrieked with pain as the bird's gouging claws sliced through her hide like butter. She jumped back from the unexpected - fast - attack, then took a nervous glance to the area she'd been running from and quickly ran behind the trainer's leg, squeaking in fear. <Please, save me!!> She pleaded to the trainer that had just sent his best Pokémon out to dispatch her. It was clear that she believed her life was at stake.
Another thump and shaking of leaves was what followed her plea, and a Pokémon suddenly emerged from the bushes Rattata had jumped through less than a minute ago. A very pissed off Sandshrew had emerged, eyes blank with pure rage. <You... you'll regret ever doing that...> She hissed, sniffing the air. Catching a betraying whiff, she turned her attentions to behind Soren's leg. <So, you decide to beg for help from a human..? How shameless...> The shrew said slowly, edging ever so slowly closer. One could hear the rattata's heart thumping madly in her throat, fear growing ever bigger.

After the attack had landed, Oosu had found a spot on a nearby tree to perch and began preening himself. The Pokémon ran his beak through his feathers, getting rid of any ruffles that might have occurred during the brief encounter with that horrid rodent. Really, how did something that ugly life with itself? Just as he thought that, yet another of those ground-walking Pokémon appeared, just as ugly as the one before. Would no Pokémon ever be able to match his beauty? His trainer was nothing more than a 'passable'. He had the potential to try and match up to him but right now, his beauty was supreme, and he had to make sure he looked his best. Which is why, when Soren commanded it to do something -- he wasn't paying attention and couldn't tell what the boy wanted -- he blatantly ignored in in lieu of preening his feathers and redistributing the oils on every strand. Soren hadn't known how to react to the rattata. Though it had been attacked by Oosu, who, even though was quite vain, did not know how to hold back, it was still standing, quite a feat on its own. And then it still approached him? Did the Pokémon not know that humans -- for that is what he looked like, save for his marking giving away his status as a half-breed -- were dangerous? And then the Sandshrew showed her face, echoing words Soren only knew too well. "So you decided to be with those... humans?" He had joined the mercenaries, the only ones that would accept him at the time, and fought against both sides, for the money at first, but eventually for their region's peace. Not everyone had accepted his decision, of course, but the time with the mercenaries, with Ike, was the best memories of his life. "Oosu, Quick Attack," he said, his voice oddly calm. There was no reaction from his flying Pokémon and Soren was rather annoyed by that fact. Shouldn't the Swellow be listening to his commands? He took out his pokedex and quickly scanned the ground Pokémon before reaching for another pokeball, letting out Merris. The young wingull's flight was still a bit wobbly and Soren knew he would tire quickly. "Water gun." The trainer raised an arm to gesture toward his intended target. Merris wasted no time before letting out a jet of water at the sandshrew. ::Wingull:: Merris Water Gun

Sandshrew laughed shamelessly as the huge bird ignored her trainer's command. <You've got yourself a brat there, don't you?> Taunted the shrew, speaking to Soren this time. However, the human had thrown out another pokemon - a water type - to combat her.
Hissing, the light-footed shrew quickly evaded the water attack, then jumped up at the Wingull and raised her arm to claw at the bird's soft underbelly.
Meanwhile, the Rattata was still cowering in fear behind Soren's leg, the wound from the Aerial Ace attack still bleeding. She finally realized that the cut was potentially dangerous, and attempted to clean the blood and apply pressure to it by pressing nearby leaves to it.

The pokemon's taunt did not seem to affect Soren at all, his face remaining expressionless. Upon closer look, his brow did furrow just a little bit and his eyes became more focused on the task at hand when he saw the shrew dodge the attack. He disliked the Sandshrew, Soren decided. "Dodge and Cry." The order was given out but not executed. Merris had been unable to dodge the attack successfully, the shrew landing quite a good hit, sending the bird flying to the ground. He tried to get into the air again and only managed slightly, his flight only barely sustained. He was about to use a supersonic attack, opening his beak and letting out inaudible sounds, but Oosu had come back into the action and surprised the wingull halfway through the attack. The supersonic had not been kept up nearly long enough for it to take any effect. <How dare you call such a beautiful creature like me a brat?> he screeched out. He was beautiful. Brats were not. He was not a brat, for that would demean his beauty, because he was the most beautiful bird in Cheyenne. Oosu glared at the ugly little ground creature and used a double team as it approached, circling his opponent a few times, allowing copies of himself linger in the air, before going for the strike with a wing attack. Sandshrew was about dodge the supersonic that was almost emitted from Merris' beak, but suddenly the huge blue and red bird flew towards him and used an odd move, splitting into many copies of himself. Grinning, the Sandshrew quickly rolled out of the circle of Oosu copies and taunted the bird, saying, <Yeah, any pokemon that leeches from a human - and doesn't even listen to them!! - is a brat, in my book!>
After saying this, he completely ignored the large bird and went again for Merris, his claws this time aimed at the bird's wing. She wanted to impair the water bird's flight, for it allowed birds to dodge attacks easily.

Soren was a bit surprised that the sandshrew had managed to rile his swellow up enough for the usually vain Pokémon to stop it's preening and attack. It seemed Oosu was not only defended his good looks but his pride as well. It usually takes Soren quite an effort to "Down, Cry. Focus, Quick." The commands were spoken a bit shakily, betraying the rush Soren was feeling. He was unsure of how he felt at the moment. The ground Pokémon infuriated him, but he was also angry at himself for taking the bait. He was afraid for Merris, as the wingull was one of his weaker and more fragile birds, and almost proud of Oosu for not allowing the sandshrew to insult him like that. Most of all, he was feeling the adrenaline from the fight, his blood pumping and his heartbeat pulsing loudly. He used an extended hand to direct the wind a bit, making sure his commands were understood. Merris tried to drop down to evade the attack but still got hit rather hard. His wings were in a bad shape and blood speckled his white feathers. He was about to use her supersonic once again when Oosu told him to halt. <He's mine. Don't you dare attack him.> The sandshrew had insulted his pride and he was going to show him. The wingull, a bit annoyed that he did not get any action at all, agreed nonetheless. Besides, he was worse for wear and he was missing the comfort of his pokeball. As if Soren read his thoughts, Merris saw the red light engulf him before whisking him away, back into the red capsule. Oosu did one lat quick circle around the sky while taking a deep breath and calming down, focusing himself for his next attack. Then, his speed skyrocketed as he went in for a rapid Quick Attack. Sandshrew smirked as her claws hit their mark, creating another gash on the water bird. However, the trainer had decided to recall Merris and command the big sparrow to attack, too. How rude, thought he, trying to locate Oosu in the sky as he executed the attacks Soren had told him to.
However, he was unable to see Oosu in time - only when the huge bird dove down towards him with his quick attack. He hit the sandshrew fully, even critically, and the crushed sand pokemon laid limp on the ground where he'd been pummeled. After all, a low-leveled little pokemon couldn't stand against a level 20 bird any day.

Oosu has defeated Sandshrew, and gains 1 level!
The rattata edged out of her hiding place behind Soren's leg and sighed gratefully, even with her huge gash. <Thank you, mister. I'll go now, so please don't kill me...> She said, then quickly dashed away into the bushes.

The swellow let out a little huff as he watched the sandshrew fall. Serves him right. Oosu then flew onto a branch, perching himself on a sturdy one and started to preen himself again. This battle had completely ruined his mood and his feathers were a mess. As Soren waited for his Pokémon to finish up, he went over and looked at the fallen sandshrew. What happens when Pokémon lost? He had no intention on catching this Pokémon for himself. The personality was completely unlikeable and too familiar for his taste. But what would happen if he left it there? Would he get eaten by another Pokémon? Would it survive? Thinking about food actually made him a bit hungry. He hadn't eaten since he woke up and his stomach was protesting. The fallen shrew was almost too easy of a meal. Oosu had used a single attack to defeat it. Though he guessed his Pokémon only really listened to him to prove the sandshrew wrong. He had never killed his own food, though. In fact, he had never had the apetite to stomach actual Pokémon flesh. Maybe it was his half-breed nature that made eating almost one of his own such a sacrilege; It was no secret that pokemorphs rarely prey on Pokémon. Soren looked at the fallen sandshrew for a bit longer before deciding he had mused enough. There was plenty of edible plants on the side of the road, and as bitter as some might taste, it was food. And with Oosu finally done placing every feather exactly where he wanted it, Soren dropped a quick compliment before returning the swellow to his pokeball. It was time to move on.

The route was once again quiet, though a few Pokémon calls betrayed their presence quite often. Flocks of bird Pokémon flew together high in the skies, seeming to race each other. The sun was getting lower - soon it would set. The sky glowed orange with the changing time.
A shinx was rooting around in the bushes, searching for prey. His darkened eyelids and less-than ample muscles were testaments to his hunger, having gone without food for a few days after getting chased out of his family pack. He suddenly noticed the trainer, and jumped into a bush to hide from him.

As Soren walked along the path, his eyes darted from one side to the other, investigating every sound, quickly gauging their distance. He had nibbled on some roots, filling him up barely, but enough to quell his stomach. The sun was starting to set and he'd have to find somewhere to stay for the night. Of course, he'd have to go into the woods for this. The open road was much too dangerous.
Soren heard another rustle. This time it was close by. He had seen nothing but a glimpse of blue before whatever it was jumped into the bushes. Did that pokemon want trouble? The trainer hoped not. He kept his distance, though never taking his attention off where he last saw the creature. He carefully went into the shrubbery, further away still from the pokemon, though wary that he was showing his back. Or at least part of it. His pace quickened just a little as he went into untouched terrain.

Shinx saw the passing human as a source of food - well, not his flesh, but he could supply some for him, too. He didn't know that Soren had only supplied himself with roots that he'd found and most likely didn't have extra for the little cat.
The blue and yellow cat followed behind Soren, not daring to make a noise in case the human would turn around and hurt him. Maybe when he stopped somewhere, he could sneak something from his bag... The shinx's mouth watered. Just the thought of food was enough to have gotten him this far.

The feeling of someone watching you is never an enjoyable one, and Soren could feel the pokemon's eyes on him. He still did not know what it was, but it could not be big. The shinx was downwind from the trainer, making it almost impossible for Soren to properly identify it. Nevertheless, Soren did not want to lose the advantage he had; he knew he was being followed, and the pokemon probably did not share that knowledge. He walked a few more steps before stopping, crouching down a bit to pick a few more plants, pulling them from their base to get to their roots. As he did, he subtly glanced back a bit, trying to see what was following him around. More importantly, he wanted to know why he was being tailed.

Shinx had been slowly getting closer to the trainer, but suddenly the guy stopped to pick some plants to the side. The cat paused, the concept of food, even just roots, making his stomach growl. He froze as Soren's eyes trailed back to him. Then, slowly, he edged his way closer even as he felt the human's gaze on him.
<P-please.. may I have some food..?> Mewled the shinx, and as he said this his stomach rumbled as if in agreement and desperation.

Soren was a little surprised that the pokemon had just showed itself. Was it mentally challenged or simply unaware of the potential dangers? Or maybe it was just young. The pokemon did not seem too experienced, especially if it had to come to him in search of food. Which he didn't have, of course. A aprt of him ever regretted leaving the Sandshrew on the side of the road. Even though it felt wrong eating another pokemon -- his mother had stuck to a strict vegetarian diet -- he knew that it was considered the norm for most humans. Even the mercenaries had hunted for their food, often preying on Stantler and other larger pokemon, as Tauros were harder to find in the wild. The roots were only a temporary solution for him, and he had to find some fruit and nuts soon. Damn that Seedot. He should have kept it around with him and killed it off when he got hungry.
The trainer raised a hand and pointed back toward the trail. "Dead prey," he said. Just because he couldn't stomach the thought of eating it didn't mean no other pokemon wouldn't accept the easy meal. In fact, even Seath would have probably eaten it happily. But now he just wanted the pokemon to stop following him, find its food and leave him be to find a place to rest for the night.

The shinx looked to where he pointed, but nothing in the distance looked like prey - since the Sandshrew had already been stomached by another hungry Pokémon almost instantly after the battle. Shinx turned back towards Soren and gave a soft mew. <I don't see any... food...> He seemed to become dazed for a few seconds, but shook his head a bit to regain himself.
Then, knowing that this unfriendly trainer was probably not going to share, the shinx prowled off with his rumbling tummy in search of prey or friendlier trainers to beg from.
Shinx has left.

Soren watched the pokemon leave out of the corner of his eye, wondering how long the shinx was going to last alone. The world is not an easy place to live in, and finding food should be any pokemon's priority. Failure to do so means death. He collected a few more roots and munched on them as he continued to walk off the path. As the sun was setting, he finally decided on a tree that took his fancy. It had large, old roots that snaked around. He found the south of the trees, where the moisture from the moss wouldn't soak through his clothes, and mentally delimited his area. There were some low shrubs he could use as some kind of bedding, but was it worth it for a single night? The canopy blocked the view from the sky, but the winds were calm and warm, indicating that the night would not be incredibly harsh.
He sat at the base of the tree, his cape finally being of use to him as it cushioned the bark and ground just a bit, and allowed his feet to rest. He glanced at them. The straps were still rubbing against his skin as he walked and the bandages hadn't done too much to stop it. It still felt like fire and the moment his feet were not supporting him anymore, Soren became aware of how much they really hurt. He rubbed them a bit, trying to soothe them while he allowed his eyes to rest for a bit.

A paras that whose home was a burrow in the same tree Soren was sitting at had just found a couple of berries for her dinner, and was holding them in her claws when she saw the trainer sitting in front of the entrace to her house. Emitting a hissing noise, the paras neared the rude human and began to rant to him.
<Hey! Hey you! Your butt is on my roof, you know!> She protested, raising one of her claws in the air in anger. Obviously she was not pleased to have her home blockaded like this.

Soren looked at the paras, staring at the Pokémon for quite a while. For some reason, though the shinx had done nothing to his body, the paras made his skin tingle again. I might have been because of the hunger, it might have been because of the pokemon's type, it's shape, it's color, which, in the low light, king of reminded him of a wurmple's... The trainer took out a pokeball and let out his swablu. The color was definitely the last straw. Soren had been completely torn in three different directions. The Pokémon in him wanted lunch, and the Paras was completely adequate. The berries would also be nice, but a nice, juicy paras down his stomach... it ade him shudder, both in pleasure and disgust. The idea of near-cannibalism --though it shouldn't be; they were completely different species -- still unsettled him. And of course, his human side wasn't bothered by the thought at all, and was in fact encouraging him. His stomach was empty, there was a paras in front of him. Easy prey. "Peck." The Pokémon did not question his decision and complied, taking a second to size up her opponent before attacking. Nayj<Peck>

Paras hissed in anger as the trainer disobeyed her pleas and continued to sit there, on her house. But what was really discomforting was the way the human was looking at her - the way a cat looked at a mouse. Paras, not ready to become a meal, took position to defend herself if need be.
The bird flew at her, beak outstretched; having prepared, the mushroom-growing bug dodged the move and soon retaliated, stretching her claw out to scratch the Swablu.
